Our DK Weight Sock Recipe - Episode 37 - Rose Opal Knits

In this episode, we talk about our finished and current knitting and cross stitch projects. We also announce the launch of our website, roseopalknits.com, and share our DK weight sock recipe. Our sock formula is very detailed and is for cuff-down socks with the magic loop method, but you can easily use it to knit your socks with 9-inch circulars (we do all the time). You can find the information on the blog at our website. There is even a downloadable PDF. It is all there for you for free! Check it out! roseopalknits.com/
We are a mother-in-law (Erica) and daughter-in-law (Daphne) duo who love to spend our free time crafting. Both of us are passionate about knitting. We spend a lot of our time planning our next knitting projects while our hands are busy knitting our current projects. We also enjoy crochet, although we haven't been crocheting for long. Erica has recently picked cross stitch back up after a four-year break, and Daphne is giving embroidery and sewing a try.
Please join us in our Rose Opal Knits Facebook group to talk about craft projects and to participate in current and future KALs and MALs.

Daphne always makes me want to start a chunky blanket, as well, but then I think of my hands! I don't think they would do well with the size needles and the weight of it as it grows. I hope that you love your DK weight socks.

I like magic loop better than flexi flips because I have the same problem as you mentioned - I jab myself and I drop the third needle often. I still use the flexi flips (I actually received the Denise flexible needles short set for Christmas) but my favorite way to do small circumferences is 9 inch circulars and then switching to magic loop when I need to go smaller.

Hi Karen! I have been picking up my socks that are on my Hya Hya Flyers, but I am still poking myself with them. I don't think that I will ever enjoy knitting with them. Knitting with 9 inch circulars and then switching to magic loop for the heel flap and toe has always been my preferred way to knit socks, but these days I am really loving two 16 inch circulars for one sock and two 24 inch circulars for two at a time socks. Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy knitting!

I just found your podcast- Nightowls fiber podcast mentioned you- and enjoyed it so much. I’m a cross stitcher and knitter too. I have recently found I can’t cross stitch when I wear my glasses or contacts. I haven’t yielded to wearing magnifiers yet😉. But I know the day is coming... I’ m very interested in the dk socks you mention. I think they would wear better for my family plus use up more yardage. How do you cake up your skein into 2 cakes? Thank you for your podcast!💕

Hi Cheryl! Welcome! We are glad that you are here. 😊😊 We love the Night Owl Fiber ladies. They were so kind to mention our podcast. Yes, me too! I have to take my glasses off to cross stitch. Then when I look up from my stitching to see something on a podcast I have to pop my glasses back on. Lol! I use a small kitchen scale to get two cakes. First I cake up the entire skein into one cake. Then I weigh it and start winding a second cake from the center pull until they are equal weights. I generally need to rewind the original cake because it gets loose. It's a bit of a process, but I prefer it to using both ends of the yarn cake to knit the sock. I hope you enjoy knitting DK socks! 💛🧡

I’m looking forward to trying your sock recipe once I get the two pairs of socks I’m knitting on off the needles. I’m not as fast as Daphne. With DK weight socks are they suitable for wearing in shoes or are they more of a house sock. I’m sorry if that is a silly question. I don’t knit with much dk.

  • @RoseOpalKnits

I am not as fast as Daphne either. It's not a silly question! They don't remind me of the slippers socks that I wore as a child. My husband only wants me to knit him DK weight socks, and he wears them in his shoes. I wear mine around the house with my slippers, and when I leave the house in my boots. I don't wear them with my loafers though. My son mostly wears his socks around the house and to bed. My mothers says she mostly wears her DK weight socks around the house, but has wore them for a quick trip to the store. I hope that information is helpful!

@@RoseOpalKnits yes, thank you! I guess it probably comes down to personal preference, so I guess I’ll just have to give them a try. My husband can never get enough handmade wool socks, so this would be good to knit his socks faster.

I love to see younger ladies knitting and talking about knitting. I don’t have any friends that knit and they don’t get it. I hear, “cant you buy socks, hats or scarves?” Um, not like the ones that I can make.
