Red doesn't actually hate PJO, she very much likes the original series, it's the sequel series, _Heroes of Olympus,_ with which she takes issue, because, as she iterated in one of OSPs Q&As, it was 1.) all in third person POV and 2.) no more amusing chapter titles.

I think some people are too hard on Percy Jackson sometimes. Are they not exactly like the full Greek myths? Yes. They’re meant for kids and unlike some authors that will not be named, Rick Riordan does try to be inclusive of other people than what was typically considered mainstream. It’s played a huge part in what is basically a Greek Mythology renaissance in writing, which I’m grateful for.

After a stage performance by my friend Maria Olsen, she told me she'd been cast in Chris Columbus's next project, and she'd be flying to Canada in a day or two. She couldn't remember the title of the film. A day or two after she had left, I was headed AMC theater, and the Coming Next Year Teaser for _Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief_ was shown. As indicated Chris Columbus, I emailed Maria, who confirmed that was the project. Accurately deducing it was a book series, I bought the first three as a box set on Amazon. Halfway through the first book I quickly ordered the 4th and 5 the books. I also emailed Maria and said "You're playing Mrs Dodds, aren't you?" She affirmed, wondering how I knew she was playing that particular role. I pointed out I'd worked with her enough to know it would be idiots to cast anyone else in that role. As the film neared its release date, and it's trailers began to surface, I was thrilled that they focused on Maria's scenes, particularly as they were very close to the scenes in the book. Then I saw the film. I was aghast. Apart from Maria's scenes as Mrs Dodd's, although they neglected to kill her in the museum, the film went so far off the tracks, I had to wonder wtf was going on? I love the IMDb comments on the film, in that those who haven't read the books were like "Meh, it was okay," to those who _had_ read the books, wanting to light a bonfire under whoever wrote the screenplay "adaptation"...

I prefer the pen with a cap. In the sequel series we find out that if he puts the cap on the other end it becomes the most overly complicated magical normal ass pen. And I just think that's funny. Also whether or not you like Percy Jackson, that series had a really big influence on making Greek mythology cool. Stuff like God of War and Blood of Zeus (which is awesome and you should watch it) wouldn't really exist without it.

I think book Percy was pretty good at noticing signs he's walking into the trap but he's generally in such a bad situation that the trap maker is able to use magic to make him not care about the fact he's walking into a trap (Medusa using food to lure him and Annabeth into her garden gnome emporium because they'd just spent half a day running after losing all their supplies) or he's actually got no choice but to walk in (the trap Hephaestus laid for Ares and Aphrodite that Percy was forced to trip by Ares).

To be fair on the Athena criticism in the show. Rick does some stuff with Athena in the Heroes of Olympus series that paints her in a more unflattering light. Including introducing Arachne and her story in the third book. But yeah, that stuff wasn't really in the original Percy Jackson series.

For those trying to read the heroes of Olympus, I cannot stress enough, The Lost Hero is the weakest because it has to reintroduce camp Half-Blood to new characters for the first half of the book, and gets better when they leave the camp. Book 2 is where the story really sets in and books 3 and 4 are the best ones in the series of five. Don't judge based on the Lost hero

I loved when Percy first gets to his apartment in the series Sally is sitting on a tiny balcony in the rain, letting the rain hit her face. The way it was shot it felt like Poseidon made the clouds open for HER. Even though Percy hates Poseidon at first, there are small hints that Sally loves and misses him and Poseidon feels the same. I also loved how easily Sally manipulates Gabe. Like it's clear he sucks and is at least mildly abusive but the way she gets him to lend her the car is SO awesome. She just feels like an independent character which makes it sting all the more when she's almost killed and then taken by Hades. Basically I LOVED Sally and Poseidon in the show, they nailed it!! I didn't like other things about the show (*cough* tension *cough*), but the casting was great :)

I kind of had the opposite reaction to that. The show paints Gabe as just pathetic. I never once get the vibe that he has the spine to stand up to Sally, let alone hurt her. Gabe in the show deserves a swift kick in the balls and a reality check, he doesn't deserve to die. It honestly makes Sally feel weaker than her book counterpart, to me, because book Sally chose to put up with years of abuse for Percy's sake, show Sally put up with an annoying waste of space. One of these things is much more impressive than the other. Gabe's characterisation is one thing I think the film did much better than the show

Thank you for talking about this series written by one of my favourite authors (even though I am far outside the target demographics), I just love how well Uncle Rick plays with the myths and weaves this entirely new world from them. It was an off-handed snarky comment at an appropriate time but just to avoid confusion, I wanted to point out that Rick himself wrote the a good portion of the show and had a lot of creative control. He also talked about how he took the opportunity to fix mistakes in his earlier work - one example being the Arc, which he had falsely assumed was next to the river. Also there were themes he only fully developed later on (i.e. Zeus being an abusive father) but now takes the chance to include in the early parts of the story. I strongly recommend the 'Apollo' series, which is quite unusual with an initially almost entirely unlikeable protagonist (Apollo himself), which is also written from inside his head (which Red surely would appreciate) and spills a lot of the tea on what is going on behind the scenes on Olympus.

Around 45 Minutes, the question of Hermes dicking the heroes around comes up. I think it's a question of family loyalty. He could not help Luke before. Now he's trying to keep his son out of the hot seat. If Percy and Co. fail? Luke is not exposed, and Hermes' complicity (even if it's forced as "your kid will go down for this if you don't help") isn't revealed either. Hermes does not want Luke to hurt more than he already has been... it's a common parental mistake, especially when overcompensating for bad choices in the past.

This does not come until later in the books, but on the subject of Athena not being an angry or wrathful goddess in the original series- this comes into light during The Mark of Athena, with her Roman counterpart. Condemning Annabeth to die in the St. Louis Arch gives the same vibes as Minerva commanding Annabeth to follow the Mark of Athena. No spoilers but if you know you know!

I've always interpreted the gods in Percy Jackson to be the personification of the angel on humanity's shoulder. The gods can do a lot of things for humans, but one thing they can't do for us, is fight the devil on our other shoulder...humanity literally stands between them. This is why the world needs heroes to defeat monsters, humidity has to be strong enough to conquer its own demons because the gods and the monsters are just manifestations of the same thing..... humanity's collective belief in them

Personally, I think that the love shared between Poseidon and Sally is the reason why Percy is so powerful. Sally was able to connect to Poseidon in such a level (I mean, he called her a queen among women and wanted to build a palace for her), that when they...procreated, Poseidon either a) combined with Neptune, or b) became Mycenaean Poseidon. This would explain why Percy can control even the Underworld rivers, as well as create earthquakes and even do slight magic with the "ward-off evil" sign. The same pattern seems to follow with Nico: Hades loved Maria deeply, and their son has an extensive amount of control over the dead and shadows. By contrast, other Big 3 kids like Thalia, Jason, and Hazel aren't considered to be on the same level, and their parents really didn't love each other: Beryl only loved Zeus for his powers and title, and Zeus probably saw Beryl as a nuisance; Marie called upon Pluto and desired to have his riches, which Pluto warned against.

Oh god. This series was so damn much of my kidhood and teenage years, and I'm looking forwards to seeing more of it. It's dear to me for a LOT of reasons. 1. I am genderfluid, and Alex Fierro from Magnus Chase is kinda how I figured it out. Seeing actual honest representation of how I felt literally unlocked that for me. It was amazing. 2. Growing up, I didn't register it at the time because I was a kid and it was "normal," but my parents were... pretty shitty in a lot of ways. The idea that I could secretly be a demigod, that I could have an escape and be more than an abused kid hiding in their room, meant a LOT. 3. I am a mythology kid to the core, and even if it's inaccurate at times, I adore how well a lot of it is done. This series was a core part of my childhood, and I'm very happy to see it covered!

55:05 Python actually appears in a late series. It takes place after Heroes of Olympus and is called The Trials of Apollo where Apollo gets blamed for a lot of what happens in the previous series, so Zeus makes him mortal as punishment. The Roman emperors and Python have been overtaking all of Apollo’s various Oracles to the point that it starts messing with Rachel Dare’s prophecies. Apollo needs to defeat the emperors, with the finale being his fight against Python and in order to return to Olympus he has to restore all of his Oracles back to himself. It’s really fun and entertaining, all of the chapters are haikus by Apollo himself, and he gets stuck in the body of a 16 year old Lester Papadopoulos and him walking around complaining about his lack of divinity, abs, and general talent is hilarious, definitely recommend reading

38:29 my biggest complaint is how they exited the Lotus casino. I liked how in the book, they run out to the street, flag down a cab, and when the driver asks for money, they try the casino card and it shows a balance of Infinity ♾️. That was my favorite part of that section of the book. And for lotus casino song candidates, maybe a very brief moment of “welcome to the hotel California” maybe quietly playing in the casino hotel room or something. Otherwise for the rest of it, I don’t have a strong opinion…
