Red: You are actually right on the money with your "a lot of people want a game like Dark Souls because that means they don't need to [...] balance the combat". That is exactly (part of) why I want to do my DS / Elden Ring inspired D&D game where you are expected to die a whole bunch (but, importantly, dying does *not* mean loosing your character). It's so I can design interesting combat encounters without having to worry too much about making them survivable at any given party level. Yeah, that homebrew dragon in the starter swamp will f you up. Come back later, OR - the more exciting version - try to think up something clever on how you can deal with him at your level. And if you try it and fail, it's not that big of a deal - you can still come back later. Additionally I do also want to do the DS-style storytelling of little scraps of info that you have to piece together yourself. I'm just not sure if my players will actually go for it, or just ignore the story - but that's fine, DS is fun if you ignore the story as well.

We were trying to channel the ghost of the greatest wafflemaker in history by gathering his artifacts, because we were all actually terrible cooks. Our rival was the pancake mafia. It was amazing fun but a terrible introduction to the tone I was told. We also hardly did anything illegal actually, because we just convinced the person who had an artifact (a spatula) to give it to us.

tone aside, the legality or lack thereof of an action doesn't matter for the game or lore to work because for one, since every faction is stepping on every other faction's toes, even the most benign actions will require scheming and antagonizing, and for two, city guards are just another criminal gang - that line in the lore being my clue that the author was an anarchist. Or to synthetize point 1&2, in the game, the law doesn't matter, or exist, it's all just power struggles.

I cannot stress enough how much fun my D&D tables have when playing Dread. It's hella unique, simple to learn, and has so easily (almost to the point of positive frustration) incorporated the sensation of absolute horror into said simple and unique mechanics. It's built for one shots, so it's great for a quick party game, or when a player or two can't show up to D&D last minute. There's a weird stigma, I feel, that 5e has caused in the D&D community, in that 3.5 fanatics have gotten pissy about how 5e is TOO simple. While certainly far more simple than 3.5, 5e is not a "simple" system. Yet, this has led to the stigma that ACTUAL simple systems aren't really well fleshed out, or sustainable for long term games. Which, sadly, isn't true. Trails of Cthulhu is a whole lot more simple to learn that Call of Cthulhu 7e, but I've easily ran a two year long game with it. Try a new system. If you're scared to learn an entire new system, try a simple system. Hell, even a one-page ttrpg can be a great icebreaker.

I absolutely love Lancer and love that it’s getting the attention that it deserves. One of the things I love about the game is that the four main mech manufacturers (IPSN, SSC, Harrison Armory, and HORUS) are all inspired by different kinds of mechs. IPSN very obviously takes inspiration from a lot of American mechs like Titanfall and Battletech, with its rugged, practical designs, bulky silhouettes, and heavy use of ballistic weapons. Smith-Shimano Corpro has more sleek and curvy designs emphasizing speed, agility, and elegance. Very reminiscent of Escaflowne. Harrison Armory is very obviously inspired by Gundam, with its colorful, geometric designs and preference for energy weapons (several HA mechs just straight up have Gundam beam swords). HORUS is inspired by Evangelion, with it’s esoteric, biomechanical, reality bending mechs.

Probably my favorite RPG experience has been with Monster Of The Week, a "Powered by the Apocalypse" game. Your group is basically a monster hunting group, and each adventure is you taking care of another, well, monster of the week. My character was The Expert, a character defined by both their smarts and their _dark past._ As in, they literally get a move called "Dark Past". They are hyper-prepared, have a safe haven, and are extremely good at gathering information. My favorite part about PbtA games is that failure is never "oh, you don't do it", it's always "you might do it, but here's some Bad Consequences". The Dark Past move especially was great for that. It's basically gathering information from your character's vast memories. If you fail, you do still get a piece of information... but it means you were _personally complicit_ in creating the situation you are now dealing with. That's just so fun, that a _failure_ would allow me to flesh out my character's backstory! I love that kinda stuff.

I'm partial to Nobilis, partly because it's character creation is extremely flexible, partly because it's just neat how it's explicitly designed so that when you have rules-lawyering arguments, you're also having philosophical discourse. "I turn her into a frog." "She's already a frog, that won't do anything." "Yes, but I turn her into a small frog instead of a ten-meter frog." "No, remember when you turned that car into a frog, and I ruled that it would become a two-ton frog? You have control of the frogness of a target, not the size." "Well, can I turn her into a tadpole? Tadpoles are a type of frog." "I would say that you can maybe turn a frog into a different species of frog, but not a different _age_ of frog." "Darn. Well, can I turn the big frog's legs into slightly smaller frogs, thereby disabling it?" "How would that work?" "Well, a frog's leg isn't equivalent to a frog, right? But I can make it equivalent to a frog, at which point it isn't a leg." "I'm going to judge that since a minimum amount of changes are made, the leg is going to turn into a frog whose purpose in life is to lift and stabilize the larger frog." "I don't think that should be the true meaning of a 'leg'...."

@@timothymclean It is an old running joke that there should be a B.DE.-degree on German universities - the Bachelor of the Dark Eye. You don't need an actual Bachelor-degree but sometimes it feels like the games rules are so intricate and detailed that you need to study them for years like they are a field of science. Just yesterday I ran a session of TDE and I had a duel between two swordmasters, one fought with a rapier and a lefthand dagger, the other with a cavalry saber and a buckler. The rapier-guy was a defensive specialist, the saber-guy a ruthless attacker. And both of their styles interacted with each other in very specific ways. It was a slow escalation into despair for the saber-fighter, when all his strikes were blocked while the rapier-fighter hit very precise ripostes to wound his opponent and slow him further down. Which was a great story to tell in a fight, but the level of detail in the rules made it quite hard to get right. And that was just one example of a very specific field of game rules. There is a magic system, a system for "clerics", a crafting system, very detailed systems to survive in the wilderness or to sail on the seas or manage social encounters or fight very high-scaled battles. It's basically a huge low-fantasy simulation alternative to DnDs high-fantasy arcade system ...

If you want something even FURTHER afield, the game Microscope is very neat. You know when you're planning out the story of a book or comic or whatever and you have a flow chart with "here's a major setting detail" and "this character has these traits" and "this plot development happens here"? It's a gamified version of THAT! The group takes turns adding notecards to the table and/or choosing notecards to zoom in on and hash out in more detail through various lightly gamified means. It's fun to just use to tell a neat story but it's also a really interesting way to communally worldbuild a setting for future more traditional TTRPGs or various other things. My group used it during a D&D campaign to zoom out and communally tell how a several years long war unfolded after our really high level characters split up to lead the coalition armies of our various nations during an invasion of Eberron by the Nine Hells.

@@pinkcupcake4717 I managed to use a heavily tweaked version to very good effect in a campaign many years ago. The premise of the D&D campaign was that the party played divine beings who served the setting's primary deity and it was their role to periodically go to the mortal world, find mortal hosts to merge with, and then carry out some vaguely defined mission for their deity. Stuff like ensuring a specific thing happened, preventing a certain thing from happening, facilitating some great change in the world, etc. in order to help history to unfold in line with the creator's plan. The mission would be a very vague one sentence thing that was very open to interpretation. Once the mission was completed, the divine aspects of the party left their mortal halves behind to return to the divine realm. Then we zoomed out and used Microscope to flesh out the way history unfolded over the next century or two, detail the chain reaction of events started by the party's actions, how parts of the setting evolved, etc. Then after that was done, the party would return to the world and find new mortal hosts to carry out the next mission. Rinse and repeat through the ages.

I still have fond memories of my old LANCER campaign and my poor cloned-super-soldier-turned-freedom-fighter Jeremy Aesop. He had a whole character arc about overcoming the weight of his past and finding self-worth and went from a stammering anxious mess of a man to... well, still a stammering anxious mess, but one who was ready to punch his evil corporate enemies in the face with a giant mech. But then the final boss of the campaign, on his final turn (as his mech had so much heat it was gonna melt at the end of the round) dropped Jeremy to 0 hp with a crunch of his giant mechanical crab claws. For those who don't know, in LANCER if your character drops to below 0, you die instantly. If they're AT 0, though, you roll a d6, and while 2-6 still usually leave you actively dying, only rolling a 1 will instantly kill you. So guess who flubbed the last dice roll of the whole campaign and made their character a tragic martyr? R.I.P. Jeremy. Enjoy your cheesy holo-soap operas and prepackaged snacks wherever you are.

I ended up starting with the dreaded D&D Red Box, which makes since because I originally got it because me and my dad had a really stupid idea: "Ninja's But what if they were cats?" But when trying to learn the Red Box we both felt disappointed for different reasons, I felt underwhelmed and my dad was disappointed how it played, and we were both disappointed that we couldn't do our stupid idea. Mind you: We didn't understood how to home brew that system, because I was like 8, and my dad never did that sort of thing. But my dad remember one RPG where you really could play anything you want and could make it anything, any setting, any type of character, any level of realism, or any level of complexity for combat. That system being GURPS, and after we played our stupid idea out, I almost play GURPS religiously even now, seriously I fricken love this game and how beyond flexible it is. To quote the game why I love this game: "You have your a medieval Wizard character get transported to D-day in WW2 without needing to change systems or worry of different rules." That and the game is 60% rules for games homebrew anyway with the books knowing this, there's no special rules in the other books, just suggestions of how to do a certain setting more realistically or more fun. In fact, so much so, you can use a book that's been around since its early days and use it in the modern edition of the game with no issues at all. plus usually the books can have some good starter education in to a subject, and again, the book actually knows some people are just there to read them and not play it and gives some good material for that part of the audience. The game has very few actual "Rules" you need to follow to make it work, its basically "pen and paper RPG but can played like a simulation" Don't like the rule? change it, because it can be done with little thought how to do so while still being functional. it's attribute and skill system also allows to have role play and story take the driver's seat and the game part only make sure its still functional, or you can basically have the TTRPG equivalent of ArmA 3 with the ACE3 mod (Except actually fun). And again you can have any setting and switch characters between them with no real issues, you can have a james bond spy story, a realistic war story, Shadow Run, medieval fantasy, monty python medieval, space exploration, Star Trek Wars, or, like what I'm setting up, Animal WW1. This has been my preach for this system. Now time to make a few complaints: 4 Edition isn't great for everyone. Its mostly a bunch of small changes that for certain players can come off annoying. I'd recommend for new players to mess with 3rd edition first, and if you plan not to use those characters again in that version of the system, then try 4th, compare the play styles and choose whatever one you and your friends like. Two, the vanilla magic system is annoying except for very certain settings, I recommend changing it to your and your groups own taste. I'll either do it through a advantage that cost points or just give it to players where instead of fatigue, it uses their intelligence for their max amount of points they can use for spells. And last and most important, the point system, its actually really brutal and hard to improve your character, but you can't get generous with it either (Unless you want to go Dragon Ball Z style) because the brutality is there for a reason. I like it for making characters due to it making very well rounded characters to the point I'd recommend it for writers if they're struggling to make a balanced character, but improving is slow and players might forget they can actually improve their characters. So you as a GM have to figure how what will work in each campaign to make sure players get excited for improving their character without them becoming too powerful. The core book makes a suggestion where improvement can be narrative driven and points are spent only as those moments happen. Screw the spending points part, because what's the point of getting them if the GM practically chooses where they go, but I like the "Improving the character through narrative" part. So you made a bunch of successful will saves to fight the giant spiders to save your friends despite giant spiders should put your character in a panic attack state? Well the GM could say: "Scumplus fought has fought his fear multiple times now, and saved the lives of his friends because of it, while they still terrify him, Scumplus doesn't feel as scared to face giant spiders anymore, the phobia has now been reduce to a minor fear, he will no longer have panic attacks over giant spiders if he fails his will save." It becomes a narrative turning point that also feels like an improvement/upgrade of the character both them as a character and as a pawn for the player. But again you have to really know what type of game your playing to figure best course of action. I usually like half-game logic and half realism for this system, but others might feel different. Making this games greatest strength also its greatest weakness: its flexibility. And to those who read this giant essay of why I like the GURPS system: 🍪 Here's a digital cookie. And some more: 🍪🍪🥠

Two additional recommendations not brought up during this video I thought I'd go ahead and list in the comments. Both of these I learned from the Live Play TTRPG podcast "The Adventure Zone," so take that for what it is: Monster of the Week - An Evil Hat Productions system using the mechanics of Powered by the Apocalypse. It is a narratively driven Mystery system, straight up mentioning how it's based off shows like Supernatural and Stranger Things. Players investigate strange happenings that eventually lead into a fight with the, as the name suggests, Monster of the Week, using what they learned from their investigation in order to defeat the Monster or whatever cause of the event being investigated. A Quiet Year - A DM-less game from Avery Alder about building a narrative out of drawn card. Using a 52 card deck, the players roleplay out and map a settlement being made within a post-apocalypses society. This can make for a great set-up for a game setting to be played within the narrative being created by the players.

@@suitguy969 It *was*, back when it was on the MS Paint Adventures forum and it was a Problem Sleuth/Homestuck style webcomic, but those forums died, the comic completely rebooted, and it's a very different beast these days. Intricately-drawn cosmic-fantasy type stuff with heavy wuxia flavouring (and like, Hindu philosophy?). The title is an artifact of its original premise (where it literally had a Demons Killed meter that maxed out at 6 billion, and she managed to kill about a dozen before the forums died).

Here's a recommendation from me considering no one seems to be talking about it: Savage worlds is a generic rpg system designed mostly for pulp action fun. It is designed from the beginning to allow homebrew with systems to create custom races. It is a classless system and uses a wound system instead of hp where you have to hit someone hard to deal damage, death by a thousand cuts does not work in this system. There are 4 companion books that expand on the core system for the genres of fantasy, sci fi, superpowers, and horror and then there are a bunch of official settings with plot point campaigns if you don't want to make your own!

This was amazing! Loved seeing Lancer & Blades in The Dark get some love, on top of all these new recommendations. Just to add to the recommendation list: If You're Looking For Something Similar to D&D: 13th Age The combat is D&D style but it has special mechanics to 1) keep the fights moving quickly and 2) makes it easier to do theater of the mind since instead of specific move speeds, or grid measurements, everything is either 'nearby,' 'faraway,' or 'engaged' It also has a lot more narrative mechanics that make roleplaying more satisfying like building unique backgrounds that you use to problem solve instead of going off a preset list of skills. The Icon system can be tricky for new DMs to utilize but its basically a broad faction system you can use to quickly improv stuff in the world that player's characters will have connections to or interest in + allowing for more opportunities for collaborative worldbuilding. If You're Looking For A Game That Doesn't Need A DM: Inspectors It's more on the comedic side and it's mechanics are simple but they allow for a lot of creativity with roleplay. It's basically The Office but you're a paranormal Investigators. You can do character asides to retroactively establish stuff, or just comment on stuff in character without other characters knowing it in game. You can make your business be more like Men in Black or Ghost Busters in terms of resources and style. Instead of a set GM the players take turns being the GM which basically means they get set up the mystery that session and do all the NPC voices that day. Most of the mechanics are based around players taking full control of scenes in terms of what clues are relevant, what the mystery actually is, or any other narrative twists. The better a player succeeds on their rolls, the more control they get of the scene. The worse they roll, the GM that session gets more control. But again the mechanics are pretty simple, but it's a nice clash between BSing a mystery, fighting supernatural creatures, managing company resources, and be filmed for a documentary. (Oh yeah and supernatural creatures are a well known fact in the game. Your super natural company is just one of many that people call on for help.) If You're Looking For A Pair of Games That Work Well Together: Cyberpunk Red & Shadowrun This is extremely biased I will say since this is something my friend put together but it's been one of my favorite gaming TTRPG experiences ever so I figured I'd share it! Shadowrun has a very interesting setting/ lore but the mechanics are awfully confusing and overly specific. So my group took the Shadowrun setting and decided to try out the Cyberpunk Red system with some homebrewed magic rules. Cyberpunk's vast array of skills meant we could all customize our character's to fill very specific roles on a team of professional criminals instead of all of us basically being mercenaries. Even those of us that speced for combat ended up focusing on enough different skills to the point we still fill different roles in a fight. And all of us ended up having very different utility skills outside of combat that made roleplaying social situations and stealth missions way more rewarding. For the homebrewed magic our GM came up with an interesting way of doing magic. Instead of rolling to hit, you roll to see if using magic hurts you or not. All combat spells automatically hit but there is always a chance your soul gets directly hurt by trying to manipulate powers beyond yourself. You can choose to cast your spells at higher levels at any point but each level increases the DC you need to clear as well as upping the number of dice for the damage you'll take if you fail the DC. It creates this situation where magic is a really fickle thing where even the characters who are good at doing have had spells horribly backfire on them. If any of these sound interesting please check them out!

I read a really cool Jojo’s bizarre adventure fan ttrpg where with each action the players can put things in the environment to use later for their strategy. For instance: You’d get hit and fly through a window and you can decide you land near a coffee cup nearby to use with your ability. It made the fights really interesting.

I just started learning Savage Worlds this year (I ran a one-shot for it several times) and I absolutely love it. It's been a joy to run I love how you can just casually throw in multiple fun fights without each one dragging on for like 40 minutes. And that's to say nothing of how fun it is to reward players with Bennies and watch them spend 'em on nifty stuff. AND to say nothing of the sheer flexibility of character creation/levelling up that's possible. AND let's not forget "You can use any skill to 'test' your opponent in order to make them vulnerable/shaken/distracted". I really need to get around to wrapping up the worldbuilding for a High-Magic Faerie Tale setting (making a region map is the worst part) so I can find a group to run a longer-term game for. :P

I gotta admit that it was the exact opposite for me. There are just some creators who, while I may enjoy the content of what they’re talking about, the voice and personality makes it a chore for me to sit through their videos. And while I didn’t agree with every point Magenta made, I will admit that there is a need that each and every game she’s listed addresses far better than 5e(I just happen to enjoy individualized war gaming). And if management at WotC keeps dropping the ball like they have been, it’s not gonna take much for people to jump ship and find a new means of living out their fantasies.

You spoke a few times about D&D combat where nothing happens because you spend your turn just whiffing on all your rolls and it sucks, which made me think of Into the Odd which is a game that I've read and would love to play at some point. Two of the interesting points of that game is that you don't have a lot of health but also you don't roll to hit. You automatically hit if you attack and conversely you are automatically hit if you are attacked so the only thing you need to roll for is damage. It makes the question of "do you get into a fight" probably the most important decision because any fight could be taxing and dangerous and those hit points you might need for when you can't avoid a fight. If you pair it with Chris McDowall's setting Electric Bastionland which is pure insanity and I love it, I imagine that you'd have a pretty good game. That's probably my next stop after my current game. Caveat, I think the second version of Into the Odd is out now and I haven't read it so perhaps everything has changed but I expect that dynamic would remain as it was a pretty central thesis in the last one.

TEN CANDLES! Absolutely everyone should at least look up Ten Candles, it is such a delightful, atmosphere-centric little game! It’s a oneshot focused system designed for tragic horror (though the rule book gives examples of other scenarios you can run with it.) Each story consists of 10 scenes, and when you’re ready to begin you light 10 candles at the center of the table and turn out the lights. At the end of each scene, the GM blows out a candle… but if a candle goes out on its own, the scene just ends whether the players completed their goal or not. It’s very collaborative story focused, with PCs literally dependent on what you decide with the people sitting next to you (traits, big secrets, etc.), with the people sitting next to the GM getting to influence/be influenced by that story’s antagonists, and the gaps between scenes bridged by going around the circle with everyone speaking “truths” of what has happened off-scene (things the characters did, things they might not even know yet, both good & bad, with players encouraged to add obstacles as well as benefits to keep things interesting.) And!!! It has possibly my favorite dice mechanic of all time!!! See, there’s a single pool of d6s for the whole table that gets split into 2: 1 for the players, 1 for the GM. Whenever players attempt something, they roll their pool, and they only need to roll one 6 to succeed. *However,* the GM also rolls *their* pool, with narrative power over how the attempt plays out going to whoever rolls *more* 6s. And the GM’s pool? Oh, that’s made up by all the 1s you’ve rolled this scene, plus one single d6 that gets transferred over permanently from the players to the GM at the end of every scene. (There are ways to get more dice, but they themselves are high-risk/high-reward.) The light slowly flickering out one candle at a time, and the palpable raising of the stakes as the players’ dice pool gets smaller & smaller… There’s nothing quite like it. And all it takes is 10 candles, a few scraps of paper, and the most common dice in the world. *Fantastic.*
