I've been saying that for so many things lately. Animation is SERIOUSLY being undervalued. You can do, ANYTHING with animation! Live action is pretty inferior when you're making shows that are larger than life, primarily fantasy with magic and giant monsters and exotic locales. The amount of money that would be saved if studios invested in animation instead of making sets and appearance accurate (HAH! Accurate) actors and traveling and the COPIOUS amount of CGI. Honestly with how much CG is used in shows and movies they're almost animated already.

@@haku8135 Exactly. Showing a town burning down when a character is 5 for example is as easy as showing the same character at 25 getting on a train or making coffee. For live action though they either need to build an expensive set and then set it on fire. Or use expensive CGI, not to mention find and hire a child actor who is never going to look convincing enough as the same character (if they even try and don't just use one of the producers grandchildren with a totally different eye/hair color), then there's the fact they won't be able to act well for the scene due to being a child.

@@kx2174 Really it's just this POISONOUS arrogance that live action is the TRUE medium for entertainment. Animation is the baby bitch means to portray anything, but you put REAL human bodies in front of a camera, NOW it has legitimacy. It's so fucking stupid. It's even worse when there's ALREADY a perfect animated version of the show, but they make it much worse in every facet just to make it live action anyway. Disney, Netflix's Avatar, go back into the hole. NO! BACK! GET BACK IN!! Where's my whip!?

I did not like the changes to Sally in this show because they took away what made her a strong character in the books. There's this misconception that if a woman is going to be strong, she needs to show it and be a girl boss. The books already have plenty of those, but Sally showed a different kind of strength. Sally's strength didn't come from having an attitude or being willing to put people in their place, it came from caring so much for her son that she was willing to live a life of pain, sadness, and fear but it was worth it to know her child was safe and that's one of the most heroic things a parent can do. It also made the moments where she did stand up and fight back even more satisfying since we got to cheer for her to overcome her timidness. Here, she's not interesting to watch because we don't sympathize with her pain and struggles (at least not as much as in the books) and she doesn't have the same nurturing qualities as a mother because she's a more hard headed parent. That's just my two cents

I totally understand your perspective and agree girl bosses have been overused. I personally feel like Rick underutilized Sally in the books and this was an overall improvement. I think too many times we see fantasy moms shoved off to the side because in order for the plot to work, they don't need to be involved in the hero's story.

@@moonangel97that was actually what was so cool about Sally to me, she was constantly worried about Percy but once he started questing she never prevented him because as protective as she was, she understood that saving the world was more important than selfishly saving her loved ones (unlike Percy). I think Sally always wanted to snap back at Gabe like she does in the show and she showed extreme strength through her self control. It’s actually way easier to stand up for yourself than it is to shut up and let people push you around. But she would sacrifice herself every day and suck it up entirely for the sake of Percy

@@josiahbaumgartner7643I agree with everything you said about Sally. But, I think Percy’s fatal flaw is something that he’s able to manage quite well. In the first book, he leaves his mother in the Underworld. In the third book, he doesn’t ask Nereus where Annabeth is, and instead chooses to ask a more important question. In the fourth book, he agrees to not pollute a naiad’s river, even though he needs the water to save his friends. In the fifth book, when Prometheus tries to tempt him, he’s able to keep perspective and continue fighting. It helps that the people whom he loves are good people whom he knows would want him to do the right thing. But, Percy tries not to make selfish choices, even when it’s really hard. Also he would have jumped in after Annabeth if he wasn't told she wasn't in the ocean. For the river example you are correct he did temper himself but he also didn't want to be like Hercules (an asshole). • @haku8135

    @haku8135

That's because in the book Sally is a real character with depth and TRUE strength. Where in here she's just ANOTHER generic girl boss that don't need no man, she's dominating her supposed to be super abusive husband (his NAME is Ugliano for fuck's sake) making him COMPLETELY harmless, which then makes the show ABHORRENT for brutally murdering him for literally no reason. They were at LEAST smart enough to not make Sally petrify him in this version, even THEY weren't stupid enough to realize if he's not an abusive shit heel killing him is immoral. It's MUCH more satisfying and inspiring to see a meek, gentle, loving mother throw herself in front of a charging MINOTAUR to protect her son than to see big strong girl boss i am wahmen hear me roar do the same thing. In the books you think "Oh she's staying with Gabe because she's whipped and weak and too fragile to even talk back to him." Then you realize "Oh shit, no, she's standing in fire to hold her son up and keep him safe. God damn, that's a good mother." Then when Percy is basically in the open now, and she doesn't need to take Gabe's shit anymore, she PETRIFIES him with Medusa's head, sells the statue, and moves on to a better life. THAT, is a girl boss moment, BECAUSE Gabe is such a massive abusive shit. It's almost like Rick knew how to write characters and arcs and stories and planned this all out. Then now he's changing things based on politics and the message for "Modern Audiences" when the modern audiences are the ones that liked what he wrote ORIGINALLY.

My issues with what they did to the characters: Sally was strong in the books. Not by yelling at Gabe and stooping to his level. She was calm compassionate and was always trying to be a good mom and a good wife. That takes strength, people. Next we have Annabeth. Now, Annabeth was judgmental and her and Percy didn't get along too well in the books at first. The show, however, took away all of her reasoning and kinda made her a jerk. Also it took away her character development. Grover. Grover is a good friend to Percy in the books. He's loyal and also makes sure he serves the camp and does his job as a protector. He was kinda backstabbing in the show. Also, his morals felt all over the place. Gabe. Gabe in the books was clearly a jerk and a bully. He bullied his friends, Sally, and Percy. (Sally being so nice to him helped a lot to highlight all of Gabe's flaws) The show made him nicer, in a way. He wasn't very threatening (because again, Sally wasn't afraid of him which took away his power as an abuser) so he was a jerk but that was it. Chiron. His vibe was so weird in the show. He was secretive in a scary way. He was hard to read. The book one had secrets but you could always tell that he kept those secrets for Percy's own good. Medusa. Do I really need to elaborate? Hades. He wasn't intimidating at all. He looked like a chill dad. He was weirded me out. He was peppy. What? Ares should have had the fire eyes. He didn't hold any real power you know? He didn't feel powerful. Your supposed to fear his power. Instead your first thought is, "Wow, he's a jerk". I think that's all. Let me know if I missed any.

Guys, hate to be that guy, but as much as we would all like to blame Disney for all this, the sad truth is that Rick was deeply involved in the development of the series AND its writing, and he's already stated in repeated occasions that he personally allowed and even wrote most of these changes. The problem is most of the fandom idealizes Rick to the point they consider him some sort of flawless god and never question his choices even if they are clearly wrong. I mean of course he is a remarkable human being and we all admire him, hell he's one of the main influences in most of our lives, but that is no reason to just accept whatever he says or even worse, attack people who slightly disagree with him (which happens a lot in the fandom, trust me I know from experience). I personally found the show acceptable, and that might only be because it was at least more faithful than certain films we all know (and hate to admit it but even the films managed some of the fun and entertainment better), but it is obviously FAR from being what we were promised and, as stated in this video, it is packed with flaws from start to finish. My point with this whole thing is: I know it is easy to just blame Disney for everything, but we have to accept the truth, no matter how bitter: the show is what it is because of Rick Riordan himself.

*HONESTLY* lmao... One thing that bugs me is that there are some lines that Rick and the other writers for season one of the PJO TV series took straight from the original book, but they’re said in different scenarios which changes the feel/meaning/context. Annabeth's line about Percy drooling in his sleep is *definitely* an example of this... Why did they make it *so* ominous in the TV series lmao?! Why couldn’t they have had her trying to question Percy about “What will happen at the summer solstice?" and “What’s going on? What was stolen? We’ve only got a few weeks!” in that scene and try to help nurse him back to health with some Ambrosia like she did in the original book? Why couldn’t they have had Annabeth randomly blurt out her famous “You drool when you sleep” line as a funny comedic line later when Percy wasn't *literally* fading in and out of consciousness like how it was done in the original book??? It made no sense and it was so jarring the way it was done in the TV series 😭😭😭lol... The way they did the “You drool when you sleep” line was *so* off-putting in the TV series. Annabeth was straight up watching Percy in a coma while he was literally fading in and out of consciousness and giving off mad stalker vibes throughout almost the entirety of episode two. I wonder if Percy never woke up for those few seconds if TV series Annabeth would have just kept watching him with her arms folded while he was in a literal coma lmao...

as someone who saw the original movie and never read the first book i always thought the beginning was the same. after watching the first ep of the series i thought it confirmed it. well, i decided to listen to the first books audio book before watching ep 2. WHY did they leave out SO MUCH context in both the movie and tv series??? i'd also like to know why they have grover be the "hero" that helps percy enter camp half-blood, while in the book grover is passed out not helping anyone. The thing that annoys me the most tho, PERCY DOESNT KNOW HIS DAD IS A GOD infact he completely denies it until he see's the trident symbol over his head after the ctf game. another small detail i don't understand why they left out is, the tree on the hill is where they entered not a flat area with an invisible border that the mom can't cross. was it really that hard to find a tall tree on a hill to film under? i'mma go watch ep 2 and update this post about the weird stuff they left out for no reason. they better have the bathroom part and percy disarming luke while Luke's trying to disarm him. or im not watching the rest of the series. ep 2 edit: im so disappointed with this series after ep 2. not only did they mess up the bathroom scene, but they made annabeth a weird stalker who needs a noobie to help me win in ctf??? they didn't ad the best part of the "welcome to camp" chapters where luke is demonstrating how to disarm an enemy and percy disarms him outta pure instinct. after that they have percy go with annabeth? why? to talk? not only was the talk pointless but they made it seem like she planned for clairece and gang to pull up on percy, which ALSO doesn't make sense because percy wasn't just waiting around. he and luke got ambushed by them while fighting. lastly, they made annabeth randomly push percy into water to "prove he was poseidon sons" like she already knew from the second they met. the reason she pushed him in was because he already was using his healing powers while fighting and she had a suspicion so she tested it, she didn't just KNOW. and to top it all off, they made GROVER the one to have the idea percy's mom is still alive and chiron the one telling percy to go to hades to get her. can they not understand those are the most important moments of the beginning of the story to show percy isn't just some stupid kid? not to even mention, annabeth was showing him around the camp and why she knew he was in the bathrooms to begin with. uuhhhgg i waited for this series to finish to start and now i dont even want to watch it, it's so bad. idk what they had Mr. Riordan doing, but it clearly was fact checking ANYTHING. if you guys care about my opinions on the show comment and i'll watch ep 3 and update for you lol. (sorry i really needed to rant about how bad it is.)

Small correction - Percy disarms Luke by doing what he said but it was only when he was supercharged by the water he'd just doused himself with. This was before he knew he was Poseidon's son so he didn't really connect the two but it wasn't JUST because Percy's really talented with a sword - which he is - but also because he's extremely overpowered as a demigod

It's not whether they're a hero, it's that they're the main character and we see a lot of them. Lots of people (again, I'm not, but I think the general public is) are willing to look past someone like Clarisse because she's not such a big part of the show Third, you'll notice that Disney has never ever tried to race swap TO white (well, not the Disney of our time which is the one we're talking about). @omberg5593 no, not nowadays. Before, whitewashed characters were pretty normal and barely anyone would bat an eye. For example, in Doctor Strange when they changed the Ancient One from an Asian man to a White woman...barely anyone cared. Now, that wouldn't fly by as easily. My preferred choice for diversity in book-to-movie adaptations is definitely NOT by race swapping. But I've pretty much accepted that it's going to be like that for a while. Why? Because I've found that people in general are less likely to even want a movie adaptation with a non-white main character. I still don't prefer it, but what can I do? And no, it's not a coincidence at all. I don't know why you would think it is. I'm pretty sure you know why they usually don't race swap TO white....right? That wouldn't fly with a lot of people. Obviously, a lot of people would be very happy with it (to sort of "get back" at the recent race swaps) but some people would protest. It actually looks like we're agreeing with ourselves here. All I said at first is that people are bashing Grover and Annabeth's character because they are not white..? It doesn't make too much sense because their personalities barely changed. Wanting an accurate depiction of a character isn't racist, but pretending like the character is no longer themselves is weird and definitely prejudiced. Looks don't make a characters personality unless it's specifically tied in with their traits. In Annabeth's case, the whole dumb blonde thing still works here because she's a black girl (who are stereotyped for being stupid) so in fact, it's even better. Grover...neutral. He didn't change. If Black Panther for example was race swapped to white...it couldn't work. On the same note, i didn't care when catherine zeta jones played a colombian drug lord. If you didn't read all that my point is, it depends.

I don’t know. The writting is bad in some places and some places its fine. I feel like they were checking off a list to make us happy, so book readers go “Oh yeah thats in the book!” My boyfriend who hasn’t seen anything was super confused when watching. He didn’t understand why kids that have no training can go on dangerous quests, he didn’t understand why the Greek Gods were in the USA, he didn’t understand why Percy specifically has to go. He didn’t understand the Oracle and what the purpose was. And all that was explained in the books. Gods can’t intervine and their children have to do things on their behalf. Gods are in the US cus they move to the most powerful countries. Percy has to be the one to go because Zeus thinks Percy stole the lighting bolt on behalf of Posidon and he has to go to prove Zeus wrong and clear his fathers name. The oracle is there to give you guidence for the quest. My bf also had no idea who Cronos was, so he turned to me like: “who is Cronos?” And I had to explain. In the books they were so oblivious because they were tired and hungry. These kids had no money for food, aren’t eating properly and are sleeping on the streets, it should feel like this but these kids are squicky clean. They’re dependant on the kindness of strangers which leads them into traps. Okay Medusa was obvious but how’s the matress guy obvious? How could Percy possibly know who the monster is and what he does. Grover being someone who can smell monsters and navigate with his senses isn’t even mentioned. They can maybe know theres a trap but they can’t possibly figure out what monster and what trap as they are people who haven’t been out of camp or in Percy’s case, don’t know anything yet. To me both Annabeth and Grover are useless. Grover is there cus he’s Percy’s guardian. They never explain how he’s an actual useful map and monster detector. He needs this quest because he wants to get a searchers licence to find Pan and also is trying to redeem himself after he failed Thalia. They did mention that arc but explained it with a line instead of maybe showing us a flashback or something that explains about Pan and the story about Luke, Annabeth and Thalia. Annabeth should be the brains but Percy seems to figure out everything without her even if he didn’t study greek mythology. Annabeth is suppose to be a skilled fighter with 5 years of training. And she has NO FIGHT SCENES! NONE. WHERES HER DAGGER? Annabeth’s personality is: chatty, she mutters and thinks out loud, she has an intent stare that looks like she’s calculating. She’s basically an athletic Hermione Granger. I think they should have had an episode in camp where they’re trying to figure out what the quest is, before they announce a quest at all and we get Annabeth and Percy trying to work out what happens. Annabeth also hates Percy because her mother is Posidon’s rival. Which is a good character arc because as the quest continues she decides she should maybe form her own opinions. I was mad at the casting of Annabeth because they removed the important representation that defied the dumb blonde sterotype we still see in film and media. As a blonde girl I looked up to Annabeth and thought it was so cool that Rick wrote her like that. I always hated how every smart girl had to be brunette and if a blonde girl was smart she had to be weird or extra feminine. I’ve been hearing dumb blonde jokes forever and they probably will never stop cus thats just the representation we have. If they do make a smart blonde girl then she’s usually smart for make up and showing us how beauty knowladge and understanding people comes in handy. Annabeth was a different representative. She doesn’t care about her looks, she’s a fighter and she’s focused on nurturing her mind. I thought this was a pretty good character just for them to decide that looks don’t matter. Even if the identity politics in the US has been preaching otherwsie. I don’t like how ideology in the US affects films and adaptations because this means that suddenly ethnicities and identities can be deemed “trendy” or are written as superficial parts of ones character instead of considering the fact that each identity affects the character. At first I was like fine, they’re trying to give representation to black people since they don’t get to be one of the main characters in a fantasy trio since Disney refuses to write something new. But I reread the later series and realised Annabeth was the only blonde female character in the series, the rest of the characters have different ethnicities and cultural haritage and are very diverse. I just know they’ll toss the rule of not needing to look the part out the window for those characters and acknowladge how these identities are important for the character. As it should be. I also don’t understand why they changed the person thats the most described character in the series. She also has a very clear arc and motivation behind her character and I think thats also the part of why they don’t understand what to do with her. In Mark of Athena we find out Annabeth has been bullied for being a dumb blonde and says that she always felt the need to prove herself because of that. Now I guess you can take away that arc and replace it with something else like her being bullied for being… a dumb black girl? People are claiming that that is a sterotype black women face but so far that sterotype has never been portrayed in film and tv the way the dumb blonde sterotype has been and still is. In fact the bullying, the assumtions and the jokes came about because of the sterotypical portrayal of blonde women in tv and media. And people are casually just shoving off an important topic like that by saying its an outdated issue, and most people talking aren’t even blonde… the few films we do have about us, they’re not exactly better representation. I mean okay with good writting you can replace that arc, you can say she’s been bullied because she’s dyslexic and since she knows she’s Athena’s kid she wants to prove everyone wrong and works harder. Fine. This also means that they’ll change her family haritage and have to do some changes to why Annabeth’s father is interested in war history and Magnus Chase will not be of Scandanavian decent. It already changed her personality so much, because Annabeth’s character is just soo… white. I mean the girl in the book cared about weather or not someone will see her with Percy on the love ride… its so white. I feel like a lot of Annabeth’s characteristics had to be tonned down so she doesn’t fall into the sterotype of being an angry black girl. Cus Annabeth is quite angry at the two, all the time. She’s almost a Keren. She’s contantly annoyed with them. I don’t understand why they didn’t show us her main characteristic, she overexplains everything to like the extent of being Sheldon Cooper at times. Generally Annabeth in the first book isn’t written well. I mean no side characters are when everything is narrated by Percy. When Rick started writting in other perspectives then he started doing more with Annabeth. So I guess fir the purpose of the first book the character being a blonde girl doesn’t matter. They can race swap her, despite me thinking its unethical and leads to bigger problems (like race swaping historical figures instead of searching for other ones that aren’t portrayed as much, like claiming a social issue as your identities struggle and thinking its okay to take away representation because of the years you had none. Its causing double standards that we can’t even call out because we’re automatically deemed as racists) but at least they should give her better writting. I was okay with all of it when I heard Rick say that the actress is the embodiment of the character. But throughout the show, I didn’t see it. I just saw all her traits being replaced with different ones as well as her heritage and identity. Little mermaid despite being race swapped and having her culture rewritten still felt like Arial when watching even though they changed the character to fit the identity of the actress, because they kept most of her personality and also included some of her characteristic features in a different way (she still had red hair despite having dreadlocks, she still had a round face and the same type of smile, she had her green taail, she had her voice, she still had childlike curiousity, most of her traits and characteristics were there) I feel like they failed Annabeth and Percy characterwise the most. Percy comes off as rude to me rather then sassy and angry. I started to see Percy when I watched the interviews with the actors but for most of the season I didn’t see Percy at all. And I think its partly due to them messing up the trios dinamic. Like by making Percy too smart he took away from Annabeth and so their interactions didn’t feel like Percy and Annabeth. Sadly Annabeth just felt like she was there to be the love interest for the character. Thats how badly they wrote her. I felt like they could have given us a glimpse into the past of Annabeth and Grover even if this comes up in the later books. But it would give us more feelings for the characters. Cus for now I’m only sympathetic towords Percy cus I saw his childhoos but Annabeth andGrover were just useless the entire show. I think them cuttig out the fight scenes affected the trio a lot. We don’t see how well they work together and also don’t see how they could even be friends after this quest. The emotion in the show is just none existant. I don’t udnerstand how they can screw with this book series two times? This world building is on the level of the Harry Potter series. Why is this not as big as Harry Potter and why are the film and tv show not as huge or well written

I absolutely love this comment. I feel like we aren’t allowed to be upset at casting choices and the second someone does say something like “ohhhh personally for me, the casting choice for the trio isn’t my favorite” because, as the author stated, this was going to me the most book accurate representation we will have ever seen. This has been proven to be a lie. I’m also a blonde girl and I have curly hair too, just like annabeth. She was always my favorite character because I could heavily relate to her. The angry blonde stereotype, the “having to prove herself just to be heard”, and having to fight to be known as smart and strong and recognized for it, as she’s a woman, not a man. I think the actress for annabeth, Leah Jeffries, is a super cool person and she is super funny in all of the interviews I’ve seen of her. The show does a horrendous job of showing off her talent. She reminds me more of annabeth in her interviews than in the actual show itself. While I do wish Rick Riordan stayed true to his word when he said it’ll be the most book accurate show we will ever see, by not only following the plot of the book properly (which didn’t happen either, might I add), but he also cast three kids (all super talented kids btw) who don’t even resemble the physical descriptions of the kids. And their descriptions, especially annabeth and Percy’s, are vital to their story and their character. While I think the actors all have great chemistry outside of the show, the writers do a horrible job at letting the kids have natural chemistry and just make them see bland, boring, and more like kids forced to work together on a quest than actual best friends. I really liked your take on this, because I felt like I was the only one who felt that way about show annabeth. My boyfriend and I watched to show together as well, and even he who had never read the books before, was confused by the glaring plot holes. It was all tell and no show. All they did was have the characters narrate what’s going on and right when we were about to get some kind of cool action scene, it cut to a black screen. I understand the show is “made for kids” but I don’t think they understand the majority of the audience are older teens to young adults, from what I have seen. It’s mainly our demographic watching the show since we have grown up with Percy and annabeth. It feels almost insulting to our intelligence with the show. It feels as if they think we’re stupid kids who won’t understand anything, so all they do is tell us what’s going on bc they think we are too dumb to figure it out with the characters. I agree with the whole “they changed the characters personalities” thing too. Annabeth is really only seen as a cranky teen girl who hates Percy and Percy is seen as a know it all jerk. Grover doesn’t even seem to have much of a personality at all. I know in the books he’s pretty shy and whatnot but it just feels like he’s not even important to the story, when he in fact, is super important. The show is also so bland for no reason. I wish the had used more bright colors and more eye catching scenes because the set design and the scenes feel so beige and bland and quite frankly boring. Sorry if this was confusing to read, but I really enjoyed your take and agree with all of it. I respect everyone’s opinions and I’m happy to see all of the different opinions here. There have been good things about the show, such as the scene with Poseidon and sally. I think the actors had amazing chemistry and the acting was so well done for their scene. Unfortunately, in my opinion, there were more flaws than good things about this show, so I hope they take everyone’s opinions into consideration and work to make the show better for season two. :)

The few times there was something funny said, nothing else in the scene reflected it, not the other characters reactions or the background music or anything. Like, ppl blame this on the fact that the inner monologue makes the books funny but that’s not true, it in the way the characters interact, and this is proven by the musical which DOES get the comedy and fun vibe

Oh dude- I was literally the same way. My friend suggested that we watch it since she knew that I was a huge Percy Jackson fan, and legit by the first line, I was audibly like, "Oh God, something is wrong". The whole intro scene, how dramatic and dreary and dark it all is- it's all the wrong tone! The intro in the book was comedic and fun! Like, quite literally, I already knew that the show was gonna be different from the books in tone alone just from that line, and then I knew it was gonna be a dumpster-fire by the time they showed the first few scenes of Percy at school! Smaller, but still important, things that needed to be mentioned/established while Percy was at school just... didn't happen. Like the way he was a troubled student that kept getting kicked out of school- which is honestly a big thing because this establishes Percy's trait of being a bit wary/rebellious towards authority figures in the book. Or how he struggled in school due to his dyslexia & ADHD which was why he liked Mr.Brunner/Chiron- since Chiron actually seemed to give a damn and believed in him. They mention his dyslexia & ADHD in episode 2, but the placement of it was just too weird and thus, didn't have the same impact. It seemed out of pocket since we didn't see any of it while he was in school in episode 1. And there's just... so much more! I also knew that this shows budget was basically nothing when Percy basically air-bended Nancy into the fountain. Where was the water???? It didn't move!! He just went to shove her, stopped, and then an invisible force like air just pushed her in! I'm also not gonna even touch on how I feel about what they did to Sally and Gabe. ...I honestly feel bad for my friend- she had to listen to me rant and complain for so long after each episode. We literally couldn't go past episode 2 because my heart and brain wouldn't be able to handle more than 2 episodes at a time.

People can have their opinions, but mine is they ruined Sally. They turned her into a generic boring girl boss, far less memorable than the book version of her character. I don’t understand why modern adaptations change stuff that doesn’t need to be changed. I realize a one-for-one adaptation in either Movies or TV is basically impossible because of the differences in medium but they just change stuff they don’t have to these days and it’s frustrating. Rick Riordan being involved makes the show even worse because he’s supposed to be the guy who keeps everything in check and imo he failed on multiple levels. And don’t even get me started on the casting.

@@Markus2E5I6 Not only that but (potentially controversially) I'll argue it was a decent ending in the book that she killed Gabe? Because it showed it really was _all a sacrifice for Percy,_ and that Sally was able to stand up for herself the entire time and chose not to for the sake of keeping her son safe. She wasn't just "in an abusive relationship", she was doing whatever it took to protect her kid, and it also builds up her loss even further for Percy. This whole time he couldn't understand why she was with Gabe, and when he finally understands it, Sally protecting him one final time from the minotaur hits home even harder. His mom was legit _always_ doing whatever it took to keep him safe out of love. Why is that not viewed as a strength all of a sudden that they felt the need to eliminate it from the tv series? Do they think there are kids out there who don't experience real life examples of this with their own mothers, like moms who deal with shitty bosses to put food on the table? Making Sally able to put Gabe in his place whenever she wanted defeats the whole point of her even putting up with him at all, and undermines the lengths to which she's willing to go for Percy.

You know, after rereding the book in the past week I can't disagree more with you in regards to the show improving several scene, of course that's just my opinion not any form of truth. For exemple: The scene of Medusa's was realy weird for me, in the books Rick went to great lenghts to expecify that her origins was not the same from the mythos, so the show using the term "survivor", something heavily related to victims of rape, looks like, to me, that they were trying to bait the public into feel sory for her by using such heavy term. They coould've used "victim", "a exemple of the Gods mercy" or however other term they wanted, but they choose that one. The other thing that makes the scene not work for me and just kinda of a waste of time, is that imediatly after they show a entire werehouse filled with the petrified corpses of her victims. And it didn't feel like "while she is a victim she is also a monster", but more like "Do you see people she is the poor victim, look how evil the gods are! Don't you feel sorry for her? Aren't she a... FRICKING MONSTER KILL HER AND PISS ON HER GRAVE! PUT HER HEAD IN A BOX AND REJOICE FOR FREEING THE WORLD OF SUCH EVIL!"... I don't think I can explain it in a manner that will make sence. The scene with Equidina, while the character herself was indeed a improvemnt, stolle from Annabeth one of the first character development moments she had. In the books I didn't feel as it being a pointless detour, it showed that despise everithing she was still a 12 years old kid, it showed how much archtecture ment to her and it showed how both Percy and Groover where willing to to make such detour just to make her happy. The tunnel of love was actualy one of the worst points in the show to me, not only that sad backstory for Hephestus made no sence it also came with some of the more head scrachting desecions of the series. Percy using his powers for the first time, cut to black, Annabeth and Groover each given scenes that don't fit their characters, but her scene fittes his and vice versa. The shield being easy to find was the whole point of Hephestus trap, he wanted to humiliated them in front of the entire Olimpus and them let them go so he could do it again latter. Ares was TERRIFIED of him in the books, but the series made Hephestus his bitch. The final duel could have being much better if Annabeth was not there, it felt as if they realise too late that they took all of her character development scenes and needed to make somenthing up. Also I don't like this anoying trope of having the protagonist fighting the end boss and don't be imediatly killed, sure Luke won (thank the gods), but the book gave the impression that if they fought at that point Luke would wipe the floor with Percy, at the very least they could've show that Luke was barely trying while Percy was giving his all.

But I loved the actresses portrayal of the character. I loved how they made her sympathetic, only because I thought she was going to end up being good instead of evil, and I still believe had they stuck with that it would’ve been more interesting than the Medusa in the books. All the hints were there, and yet the show was just like "nope. She's just an evil monster."

What many people fail to understand is that writing a screenplay and writing a novel are fundamentally different. And unfortunately one can be a great author, but a bad screenplay writer. We see this firsthand with this show. Because narration is no longer an option, the audience is bombarded with exposition from the characters, and we are missing key pieces of world building. Translating descriptions into visuals, and showing us pieces of this world without explicitly saying anything can be difficult - especially if all you've ever done before is tell us, because that's all a book requires. I also personally find the show is severely undercut by time constraints. The characters aren't given enough time to grow and develop relationships in a genuine way.

Even from the first episode I could tell this show was in trouble and like you mentioned in this video, it completely failed to capture the heart and soul of the books, which speaks to Disney's obsession and passion of MONEY over ART. I watched the making of after the series and it was very clear that the actors were very passionate about the project and gave it everything they had. The problem truly comes from the adult writers and directors who either don't understand the deeper undertones of the story, or simply don't know how to write and direct content for younger audiences and actors. Another issue I had was one also mentioned in this video, SO MANY meaningless self sacrificing moments. There were so many melodramatic scenes in this show that felt like CW stuff, and how many 12 year olds would actually willingly die for a bratty girl they just met? Absolute disaster of a show and an utter failure, and as a long time fan of the books, I was very disappointed. It's amazing to me that after watching this show, I like the first film BETTER. I am really curious how you guys calling this decent adaption when it treats it's characters so poorly. See, I never read the books and only watched the show (and the movie). I can tell you the show gives us nothing. Why Sally is with Gabe when she is still in love with Poseidon, owns the house , can boss Gabe ? Why Medusa calls herself survivor? I know what "survivor" means outside the myth but in the show it's contradictorily used. She claims to be survior but says Poseidon is not at fault but blames Athena. That just makes her being survivor of betrayal of friendship with Athena not of SA. Also the shows tries to paint Medusa in sympathetic way by having Percy say "looks can be deceiving" only to prove him wrong as she tempts him. So it did opposite of what the writers intended to be. The trio never actually achieves anything. They missed out the deadline despite knowing everything before hand, getting gods help, barely doing any dangerous task. Even knew what Lotus Casino does yet they couldn't be on time. Then at the end it's not Percy's bravery that makes Zeus respect him. It's Poseidon's sacrifice (which then again the show never elaborate what he was sacrificing by surrendering). I mean, isn't the whole quest is about clearing the name and proving Zeus wrong? The show basically turned Percy into incompetent and nonchalant guy who couldn't care less. Far from overpowered demigod. And of course the absolute vampiric sucking of masterful storytelling and cutting out any epic fight or godly appearance that Greek mythology is famous for. The show is massive disappointment. If this was how the book was written I am sure noone would hv known it existed.

@@Vor567tez As someone who has read the books, allow me to clear their name for you Sally is with Gabe because everybody calls him Smelly Gabe. The show doesn't explain this, but monsters can smell each other (hence Grover always gets nervous when there's other monsters around, because he can tell) and they can also smell demigods. Living with Smelly Gabe makes it damn near impossible to tell that Percy's a demigod - he just smells like Gabe. Medusa is supposed to be just another monster. She's extremely dangerous and cunning, sure, but her only goal is to turn people into statues. There's nothing redeemable about her. It is completely true that she was treated unfairly back when she was alive the first time, but she's let that turn her bitter and spiteful and doesn't even try to be sympathetic and doesn't deserve any sympathy. She hates Athena most of all but is also bitter at Poseidon and pretty much everyone The trio should have no idea about any of the stuff they knew in the show. They should have no idea what the Lotus Casino is, which makes Percy super impressive for figuring it out, besides literally being a little kid in a candy shop. He talks to a few of the other people around the casino and they tell him what year it is and they're not right so he realizes something is up and has to figure out how to get Annabeth and Grover out from under its control. It really showcases how good Percy is at thinking on his feet (not just the scene but the whole book) and how well he listens to people. Then despite pretty much everyone they meet trying to kill them and being actively hindered by both Hades and Ares, they manage to travel the entire way across America, escape the underworld (which I'm pretty the amount of Greek heroes who pulled that off can be counted on one hand), and fly back to New York to get the bolt to Mt Olympus (which he does, with like 10 minutes to spare. Yeah I have no clue why people thought the show was watchable To emphasize just how much of an absolute madman Percy is, I'll recap a few of the things he does in the books (spoilers incoming) - I do realize that a lot of these aren't in Lightning Thief and his character needs time to grow, but I think it still proves the point fairly well In Lightning Thief, he kills the Minotaur with it's own horn. He (this was shown in the show but not very well) he fight Ares - and wins* - and talks back to multiple gods, which is actually rare in the books because everyone else is terrified of them, understandably. Everybody else refers to them as "Lord Zeus" or "Lord Ares" and does whatever they ask and would never risk talking back to them, because that's a death sentence. Percy sends Medusa's head to Mt Olympus, to spite them, and never gets punished for it. *Kronos intervenes and stops Ares from continuing the fight, but at that point, Percy was winning. He would have lost eventually, but my man fought the god of War at twelve years old, less than 2 weeks after picking up a sword for the first time, and is holds his own. In Titan's Curse, he literally holds up the sky - which to this point, has only been done by Atlas, Heracles, Luke, Annabeth, and Artemis. My man holds up. The ENTIRE sky. From crushing the world. Plus he talks to Ares at one point and asks him "how's your heel" which is where Percy stabbed him before. Bro tries to piss of the god of War because he doesn't like him. Nevermind that he's the god of war and already hates Percy In Battle of the Labyrinth, he nukes Mt St Helen and wakes up Typhon, who has been put in a magical sleep by the gods for thousands of years. In a side book that takes place here (can't remember what it's called), he tracks another demigod all the way across the Underworld and then fights another Titan (Iapetus), douses him in the River Lethe (which wipes his memory), tells him his name is Bob and sends him to work as a janitor for Hades. In The Last Olympian, dude bathes in the river Styx (which has been done by exactly 2 people before him - Achilles and the guy who goes on to host Kronos's soul) which makes him literally invincible except for one small part of his back. He fights Kronos (alone), thousands of monsters, and beats Hyperion (another Titan). How does he beat Hyperion? He literally makes himself a hurricane of lake water that protects him from the full force of a Titan's fire. This titan, by the way, is the Titan of the East and basically the Titan equivalent of Apollo (in terms of the sun). Then, after all of this, he turns down godhood in front of the entire council of Olympians, and instead tells them, to their faces, that they need to be better parents. He blames them, to their faces, for the war that's been going on for the past 5 years, and makes them swear on the River Styx to do better. In Son of Neptune, he loses his memory and then willingly crosses a river to remove his invincibility so he can help an old lady get away from some Gorgons. He summons another hurricane to fight an army of undead (which at this point doesn't even sound impressive anymore but is far above what any other demigod would be capable of). He collapses half a glacier, recovers the standard of Camp Jupiter, singlehandedly kills Polybotes (the giant specifically created to kill Poseidon), and is named Praetor of Camp Jupiter after less than a week of being there. Oh, and he drinks a vial of gorgon blood, with a 50% chance of killing him in the most painful way possible, on the gamble that Gaea (the BBEG of the second series) won't let him die yet and would kill her own servant over him. In Mark of Athena, he has a power struggle with Phorcys (a Titan of the sea) and wins. He and Jason fight the Giants meant to oppose Bacchus - and win. And when Annabeth is falling into Tartarus, he catches her and willingly falls into Tartarus with her. For context, this is where monsters respawn when they're killed. In House of Hades, he kills Arachne, leads Annabeth through Tartarus, drinking from the river of fire along the way to keep themselves alive. He fights Akhlys, goddess of poison, runs through the Palace of Night (which nobody has ever done before ever), and jumps over the River Acheron with Annabeth on his back, and escapes from Tartarus. Not gonna lie he's actually not that impressive in Blood of Olympus. In Chalice of the Gods, he wrestles Geras and wins, which has never been done before ever. Not even Heracles won - he tied. Percy has done more in his last 6 years than a lot of gods have in their entire life

ppl call us racist or haters when we say we're dissapointed in how NONE of the cast look like the characters descripted in the books. what every book fan has found dissapointing is Annabeth Ik that the author himself did the casting and everyone says that looks don't matter as long as the actor fits the role well but in Annabeth's case the way she looks DOES matter, a lot. Annabeth's looks gets mentioned a lot in the books HER CHARACTER LITERALLY EXISTS TO BREAK THE POPULAR STEREOTYPE OF: ''dumb@ss , annoying/useless blondie who is only there to bully the female lead or play as the love interest or 'the other girl' '' so to the ppl who call us racist for stating our honest opinions about show Annabeth, isn't it also racist to assume that not a single girl with blonde hair can play a good role of a smart and fierce female character just cuz they're blonde??

I think her casting suits her better now actually cus I believe her being blond and hence discredited due to her looks holds true more especially now for marginalised minorities. Annabeth can be a role model for young blonde girls being undervalued and viewed lesser than just becus of how they look still but she can now also speak to minorities and inspire young girls now too ^^

I kind of watched this series with divided attention while my kids were home and watching it, and I was kind of watching it and kind of adulting at the same time. I largely liked it. Granted, my standards for what a "good" show adaptation is have been hugely lowered by desperately wanting to like Wheel of Time... but what really bothered me is that it took them like, 4 or 5 episodes to teach the actor playing Annabeth to act. All of her lines seem like they are delivered emotionlessly, like she doesn't speak the language and has no idea what she's saying until far too many episodes into this thing.

Riordan was given way too much control considering he has zero filmmaking experience. He should have been involved as a writing advisor not a producer. What this show needed was for the showrunners to be talented experienced filmakers who are also hardcore Percy Jackson fans as well. Best example of this is the showrunners of Cobra Kai, they are all hardcore fans of the Karate Kid but they are also not the creator's which is perfect because they don't feel like they should change the story. Riordan just over thought a lot of stuff and changed too much, which in my opinion killed the show.

2:53 right off the bat I have to disagree with some of the things you enjoyed. One, Medusa was not well handled at all. Someone else in the comments pointed out the new version of the myth isn’t even originally Greek, it was written by a Roman poet so not even canon to the Greek’s mythos. But in doing that version, FINE, but I don’t feel bad for her. The gods used and abused her, sure that’s horrible, but she goes around murdering innocent people because she’s pissy?? Really? I felt not a lick of sympathy for her. The more egregious part of that segment was the laughably short “fight” As for Gabe, he ab*user shouldn’t feel relatable guys this isn’t a good thing 😭😭😭😭 and I will say, watching episode one HE GOT THE FIRST CHUCKLE OUT OF ME. My sister and I were horrified that we were having more fun watching Gabe than Percy. THATS NOT GOOD I shouldn’t feel like your antagonistic character is more fun that your lead 9:24 wait no no no, Medusa didn’t fall in love the new version of the myth they’re using is the one where Poseidon r*pes Medusa and because she’s no longer a virgin (despite it not being of her own volition) Athena curses her, right? Because Medusa was one of Athena’s Virgin followers or something and to lose your virginity meant being cast out from her temple.

The problems with the majority of adapatations, specially book adaptations is that they are not made with the public that read them in mind, and or trying to adapt it to the max without losing it's core themes in another format, is just for cash grab. I liked Percy Jackson but it was obvious this was gonna suck...

The biggest crime of the adaptation was how it talked down to the audience. Something I think most books fans agree Rick did really with the books was *_not_* talk down to the readers. The books didn't treat them like they were stupid just because they were intended for kids. And then the adaptation turned around and acted like viewers were the dumbest people alive. The books fully trusted their readers, while the show had no trust at all with its viewers. It's not something unique to this adaptation even in the slightest, but there's something that does make it extra disappointing in this case.

I didn’t like all the talk of Luke and Hermes. I love Hermes. I love Luke. But it’s basically a flashing neon sign of ‘Luke’s the traitor’ Edit: also, while I done necessary mind what they did with Sally and Gabe, they erased all the abuse that happened. There’s a reason Sally is beaten down in the beginning. Gabe is an abusive POS. Sally has trauma, Percy had trauma. And the ‘He’s a delinquent’ after ‘why do we always do this Percy?’ In the show make it sound like Percy just doesn’t like the man his mom married, but also that despite ‘why do we do this’ Gabe does hate Percy. So what was the point of that scene? They looked at that, and said ‘yeah… that’s not important’

25:14 Annabeth's regret was that she considered betraying Percy to the Furies and Medusa back in episode 2, even though that never really had much of a payoff. That's just what I assumed it was supposed to be. Also, during that scene in the Fields of Asphodel, all I could think while Percy was trying to free Annabeth while she told him that it was impossible was, "YOU HAVE A F*CKING SWORD. USE IT."

My thing on modern movies and tv shows, like you said, Annabeth didn’t change from any of the episodes, didn’t develop or anything. Producers, lately, make women perfect from the beginning of the movie/show and play with that. When in reality, they come off rude. Look at captain marvel as another example

Okay, so fun fact Asphodels are a type of flower, and in Greek mythology, they grew in the underworld and were consumed by the dead. As a symbol, Asphodels (the flower) represent regret. Their literal meaning in the practice of floriography is “my regrets follow you to the grave”. That being said, I thought the scene in the Asphodel Meadows was well done for several reasons. Annabeth’s part in it honestly made me extremely emotional. I understand that it seems like a random choice to show Annabeth’s regret but it’s not. Annabeth in that moment is reminded of Thalia who is basically in a state of purgatory although she is a tree and not a soul rooted in the underworld. Her regret comes from watching Thalia take on a lonely and almost purgatorial existence as a tree because Annabeth let her sacrifice herself. I would say watching your friend turn into another life form while dying is a formative experience. The scene also could exemplify the meaning of “my regrets follow you to the grave” as it is Annabeth who is bound by regret and not Thalia.

I want near accuracy to the books, the show sucks literal ass and I have OFFICIALLY lost hope that we’ll ever get a good representation of the books with no huge changes. The show is lazy in my opinion and Disney could’ve done a whole lot better. They’ve also watered down the TRAUMA that was expressed in the books because it’s “problematic”. Hi, traumatized person here, I don’t give a shit. Percy was abused by Gabe and that deserves to be shown.

I mean like for one huge difference between m friend got me expelled from school so i wouldnt die and one of my friends might betray me on a life threating quest and second he only has two friends at that point in the show, luke who he met like a couple day beforehand or his bestfriend who he has known for a year.

It's amazing how, in this show's quest to be a better adaptation than the movies, I appreciate the movies way more. Like don't get me wrong, the movies SUCK as adaptations, but they definitely do not suck more than the show bc at least they kept some of the tone, let us get invested, and remember that the audience has working braincells who enjoy content...the show? Not so much. Everything is either wayyy too dumbed down like we're drunk toddlers, tries to wink at the book readers without even attempting decent storytelling, or managed to completely alter the book to the point where the plot is hardly recognizable...it was honestly insulting. Also, Disney+ is definitely a money laundering scheme bc there is no way ALL of that budget went into a show that managed to cut so many corners with effects and never gave us a blonde Anabeth. Like come on, braid in some blonde hair and spite the racists! Please, it's all I ask.

bad adaptations is just an advertisement at this point, which is effective but some people will want to watch and then read a good story. as much as the movies can be flawed, it did have the lotus flower scene right though it wouldn't work if they're kids but it can reworked. the series does look nice but im just annoyed people really wanna be mean on people who enjoyed the movies like me. i felt like this series is just created because disney thought the book fans will be enjoyed on mediocre just because they read the books. it is unfair to the others who don't know the books which the movies did got some good points in some way. i do admit the movies are bad, i do not like what they did for grover getting stuck with hades wife who wants grover for some reason who is a teen. i did like the first movie but the part on the 2nd and 3rd felt confusing and I just went with it.

i'm going to state an anime example: The World God Only Knows, as accurate as possible on 3 seasons and 3 ovas except for some reason, it made a huge cut from a bunch of important chapters and they made a recap of said cut that made the mc sound stupid as possible and felt like theyre treating the viewers stupid because they just feed information for some reason because people know the manga. I like the improvement Season 3 did because Season 3 went off the rails with unnecessary fanservice for some reason but that's from the manga. Said cut chapters are connected to Season 3 but after Season 2 and before Season 3. After that are the Tenri and the 4 Girls And An Idol ovas then as something not connected to the main story, then finally Season 3. Magical Kanon can be watched as the final part of the season. If there's a remake, I hope they fix whatever the last arc is.
