The way to do it is this. First you get a Citizen because you want a watch that looks very smart while being bomb proof and accurate, very well made by one of the biggest names in the business, was used as standard issue by the Italian navy. Then you get the Orient because occasionally you like posing in the sunlight. So far I've got the Citizen.

My brand new 0040 has the 8304 movement which is hack-able. They updated the movement on this watch recently.

Just bought the NY0040 from Germany. Now I am waiting for the Orient Ray 2 Orange!

Something else that might sway the potential purchaser: the Citizen is ISO 6425 certified for diving (like the Seiko SKX007) whereas the Orient isn't.

I have the Orient and I love it. It's a beautiful watch, but just as Arthur mentioned, the rotating bezel is extremely stiff and difficult to operate because of the narrow teeth. The screwdown crown is also not as smooth as my citizen. These are small issues with me personally as I wear it for a dress watch (I have the metal band ). The more rounded bezel is superior for dress shirts as it doesn't catch on your sleeve as much. I think if I had to buy over again I would always buy a sapphire crystal. I got mine for $120 and the citizen is $220. Quite a difference in price.

Didn't know you were into watched. Have watched a few of your Sony reviews. All good. Just got a new black Ray ii for $113 yesterday. Had an old one with pusher years ago. Much better movement in this one. Good seeing this. Take care and stay safe.

If I had a dime every time I heard someone say they had a SKX but got rid of it when they purchased a NY0440....

I have the same Orient Ray II with blue dial and now waiting to purchase that same Citizen Promaster with black dial which production has been discontinued! Really like this comparison video becuse I love both watches. I'd complete my Japanese automatic divers collection along with my Seiko King Turtle once I purchase the Citizen!! Update: I finally bought a new NY004050E which has the same black dial comes with the OEM metal bracelet. Same specs, but surprise!! This one came with the Miyota 8204 movement which does hack! Im' definitely loving it! But I usually wear it on different straps.. I just love swapping straps on this watch to dress it up matching my mood or what I'm wearing. On the other hand I mainly wear my Orient Ray 2 as a dressy diver so use it with the bracelet as it keeps it looking really shinny to match my shirts at work.

The Orient Ray II is perfect but it lacks a soul , the Citizen , on the other hand , has a certain something that makes you love him stronger as days go by . I couldnt agree more with you. I own citizen as well, and i really happy for it. It wears nice on wrist, its durable, its ISO diver certified and it used by italian military a decade long (they rebranded it, tested to survived 500m depth and it passed!). 30 meters is almost nothing but I frecuently carried it at that deep scuba diving and no problems so it's perfect for the most usual swimming and snorkeling.

I'm a desk diver kind & occasional swimmer therefore orient blue ray suits my lifestyle better. However I can see why u prefer the citizen more because of its rugged & toolish look. Either way both are truely the best affordable watches from the land of the rising sun. Keep up the goods reviews. Truely enjoyed.

Nice comparrison. Both are nice watches, but the crown on the opposite side on your version of the Citizen drives me crazy haha.

Both are good watches and brands. Just a matter of preference....

Is the Citizen movement found in a dresser watch.

For me its a tie i like both brands but for now i prefer the citizen cause for now i didnt have a citizen with my collection so this will be a better alternate with mu skx

A black faced Orient would have been a better comparison. Holding mine up to the screen it fairs better in looks than the Citizen. If I were serious about diving I would buy the Citizen but I'm not, so I have the Ray because it looks absolutely gorgeous in black on a nato strap and I bought it for a mere £110 sterling.

I actually prefer the more traditional styling queues of the Citizen , but the hacking seconds on the Orient is the deal breaker for me . For that reason only I would probably choose the Orient given the choice. Cant go wrong with either sub 2 hundred.

I have a Citizen Promaster. If your 40 + you will have great difficulty reading the date. I knew this when I bought it from other reviews, but living with it at work, when I need to know the date, it's a real pain in the ass. I just bought a Seiko SRP777 because the date is easy to read, and it even has a day of the week too.

I had already ordered the Orient because, on paper, It`s the best value out there and is really well made. But only two hours later, I found out what the Citizen is all about and cancelled the Orient to order the Citizen. I also think the Ray is too dressy for my taste, an wouldn't have really bonded with it anyways.

I have the Ray as well. I found it too dressy also. My solution was to fully brush the case. It actually looks much better without the polished sides. Great watch, no complaints.

The only reason a few reviewers are held up on calling it out right the better watch, it's because of that "something", that something is yall personal attachment of being married to the other watch so long. If you rise something on a pedestal for years and give it a sacred emotional attachment, it takes a new comer awhile to beat that, but the reality and the facts are that the mako and Ray gen II's are the best entry level dive watches on the market currently, if you throw all that sentimental baggage away :-)

Nice review,but I still prefer the orient over the citizen.Citizen just looks more toolish to me whereas the orient looks more versatile to wear.

wut.. its clearly a diver watch (type, not sure if its iso rated).. diver watch : min 100m, big lume, unidirectional bezel, solid strap, good visibility, etc. dress watch: simple dial, leather strap, rosegold/silver dial/bezel, (all of that characteristic are 'mostly')..

LOL ! I've been wearing the Promaster for a few months now, and never associated the marker with underwear. However - given a bit of imagination - I have to admit you're right.

Are they any different in scratch resistance? Compared to one another and the skx? I have 100m sapphire kinetic seiko for my everyday life, its a classic dress watch I enjoy it so much, it also runs +~2.5seconds per month, but now I feel that I need one diver as well for hotter summer days at the beach, really can't chose between these 3 best mechanical diver watches.

No, both are the same when it comes to scratch resistance. The SKX is going to be horribly inaccurate - I have owned a few and they were all either 25 seconds slow a day or 30 seconds fast a day. I still think the Citizen is the best of the group. Orient is 2nd place. Both of those offers a far more accurate movement.

Thanks for the quick response, so what about hardlex crystal compared to mineral used in these 2, is it any different in your experience? Or it's realy just mineral - sapphire and nothing in between? *also I agree that 25 seconds+/- per day is just awful, even for the entry-level:(

No, it "jumps" :( More accurate time keeping, the same water protection and almost no batteries required, at least in a long, long time. Maybe the most important of all: I don't have to get it checked and serviced (oiled) each five years.

JPW Photographic Studio they made a quartz eco drive version of the watch. id rather get that version since the accuracy and the functionality fits the toolish theme quite well.

Just got the brand new Citizen NY0040 from Germany for EU 189

Hi, I'm looking to purchase the seiko skx 007j, what are your thoughts, l love ths design and feel on the wrist but l'm concenned about thw power reserve. Would it keep time for a day or two, mayne overnight without it having wrist time. Or have you gor any other watch you can suggest please?

I bought the Citizen recently. I like the watch, but when you give it a shake you can really hear the mechanism inside rattling. Is that the case with them generally-has anyone else had this experience?

Yes, you can hear the movement spinning when you shake it. I think it is normal for the miyota.

It's because it only winds in one direction. The other direction doesn't wind, so it has no resistance, so the rotor is free to rapidly spin around.

Great Review. Just want to point out that Orient makes predominantly mechanical movements and manufactures all of their movements in house. Citizen is not known for mechanical movements. I can attest that the Orient movement is extremely accurate. Mine is consistently in the range of less than 5+ sec/day.

@@Slanovich He's just pointing out that Orient has an inhouse movement, Citizen is just putting a miyota movement in their product. Is there something wrong? Absolutely not, but it's a great effort on Orient's side to do all the work by themselves since they're not a giant company, I'd say it has a little bit more value when you do the whole thing, but that's just my personal opinion, both watches are amazing.

Very well done review! Thanks. I have one citizen watch. I also own like 10 Seiko watches. It depends on a personal taste. I am still a Seiko to go guy! Locally anyways!

I prefer the Citizen. As was said it's more interesting to look at, it's less bulky, to me 20mm lug width is better than 22mm. There's no need for 22mm lugs on a 41, 42mm wide watch. The Orient looks like just another dive watch wannabe, there's something about it that just does not work.

Try in Europe (Germany, Italy, Netherland) You will find both black or blue

Unless you like wearing your watch on the right hand, it's goofy to have the crown on the left side of the watch.

The Citizen suffers the same deal as some of the Seiko "divers", the 12 hour indice is not lined-up with the inner bezel that surrounds it. I'd be pretty annoyed seeing something like this on my wrist.

At least put them to the same time.

Buy and use a €10 demagnetizer, and your Orient will be' +/- 3 secs. Trust me.

Get some calipers. They are less expensive than either of these watches.

OMG! No calipers atawl? The cases are bashing up against each other on the wrist?? No accuracy on the Ray??? No bloody accent???? At least have a name like "Sabastian", "Esteban" or "Enrique" for the Queens sake! Citizen does seem to get the "red-headed stepchild" treatment to Seiko & Orient. If it had a name like "Shimin" or "Medborgare" it might not have acquired the stigma. With more side by side comparison video's like yours, Citizen just may get bumped up to the adult table at next years holiday meal. Good stuff, Prince Jacob.

Yeah 20mm wears more comfortably and to me looks more proportional on a sub 42mm watch. It’s one reason I still wear my promaster eco drive because even though it’s 44mm it still comes in a 20mm rubber strap.
