On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: Battle of the Entry-Level Auto-Divers 2, Orient vs. Citizen

On this episode we take a look at 2 interesting alternatives to the Seiko SKX007. The Orient Ray returns now in black to be compared against the Citizen Promaster Automatic. Each watch has it's charm and neither is "better" than the other objectively. So I take a subjective turn and let you know how I feel about each. Let me know what you think in the comments below, thanks.

Massive real life advantage for the Citizen. It was the Italian Navy "Marina Militare" Combat Divers and Pathfinders units watch.... tested, standard out of the factory for 500 meters and... passed. So Seiko or Orient can't compare ;-)

Not to mention the Promaster is ISO certified and the Orient is not...

I also prefer the Citizen on this match up. Those 20mm lugs are a huge plus as I prefer the size. But put it against the MAKO USA and I'm not sure haha

Citizen all the way. It looks more expensive. Like a Japanese version of a "Marathon" brand diver.

Just bought this watch and I plan to wear it on an upcoming cruise trip, now last year I wore the Orient mako (pepsi dial) and yes is more versatile as it can pass as a dress watch as well whereas the citizen is a diver trough and through so this year along with the citizen I am packing a cheap quartz dress watch to alternate while on board the ship.

Promaster NY0040 has been sold here in Malaysia around RM 1.5k & Ray 2 currently price at RM 700. Such a huge gap. It’s really hard to find the NY0040 in Msia. Both are good watch of choice for diver category. The ‘Bond’ nato complete the look. Really nice.

Good comparison. I agree that many folks won't consider a Citizen over a Orient. Regardless the merits of the watch. Like many things in the US. Form over function. Thanks for the review.

It's not even a competition, Citizen hands down. A modern classic. I'd love to own an Orient watch, but none of their models does it for me.

I love both watches and it speaks volumes that it's here competing with one twice its price. I have the Orient in black and it's gorgeous on a black nato strap. I do not dive so rating is not a factor. What was more important to me is how the watch looked from a distance, which is the perspective from which most people see it (they don't like being close to me for some reason.) The Citizen looked like it could have come from a general shop - the Orient definitely from a higher end jewellers. If I were going to war (which looks increasingly likely) it would be Citizen all day. Otherwise I'm hoping for sex and the Orient is more likely to bring me it.

I felt in love with the ProMaster, I was looking into other divers and saw it and it caught my eye and at first I could not tell why. I was set on buying something else, then I saw it again... I can not explaine what it is, but It just ticked for me. After looking into the Citizen brand and history of the Promaster I ordered the ny0085. ... But i gotta say that i love the Orient brand also.. so whatever works 4 you!

I have the other variant, the NY0046 all I can say is that Citizen beats the Orient on many aspects like the LUME and the design of the crown as safety feature not to mention that its a true tool watch ; an ISO CERTIFIED used by many divers.

how does this compare to the SKX in size? I can pick one up from watches hub for $120 shipped. But I am worried it's too small. I notice that the depth of the SKX is much larger, and the dial as well. How does it compare in height?

Franco I’ve got all three and you got it right. My order is citizen, skx, then orient. The orient is ok, it’s just not really a diver....need that iso rating to be legit. Citizen and seiko have it.

I’ve got both and the citizen takes the win for me in pretty well all regards. Throw in the eco drive into a three way and it wins for me.

+marlon pearce Really can't go wrong with wither. Another option to checkout would be the SKX171, just swap out the bezel to an aftermarket coin-edge and use the OEM SKX007 insert, then you have essentially a "Super" SKX with applied indices and a black day/date wheel

Perhaps a few weeks to early for the comparison, because the new Black Ray II edges the Citizen out convincingly. It was already a cleaner dial, cleaner bezel insert, and the Citizen's crown on the opposite side just kill it for me. AND NOW the Ray's new movement and removal of the 'date pusher' does it for me. That said, if Citizen made the 'BN0151-09L' in black, damn, that would be a clear winner. (yes, even if it's echo-drive)
