I'm considering enrolling in the English Language & Literature course with the OU (or English Literature with Creative Writing) but I'm worried about the job prospects once graduated. I'm torn between learning something I love or studying a subject just because it opens up more career paths. Did you have any trouble trying to find work after you studied (not sure what you studied)?

Hi, I studied English Literature & creative writing. I am so with you on the 'study for passion or open doors'. Never an easy decision. I was worried about this exact thing. The thing with our type of degree is that there are so many options available for work. Some I was not interested in, such as teaching. I eventually went into social media marketing (not something I will remain in), which is something we are able to get into because of the long-standing need for people with an English degree background. I would say I struggled for a little while, but no more than any other student. It took a few months of applying & finding the right fit for myself. Also, if you do find yourself struggling to find work, OU will be there to help. They have a large hub filled with all types of jobs. Once you enrol, you will have access to this. They also give you a call after you graduate to see how you are getting on, or you can call them. They are always kind & helpful. The other part I love is despite working full time. I still have time to write & enjoy my creative side. Hopefully, you will still find time to do what you love. I hope this helps, I know it was long-winded. Depending on when you apply, I would suggest calling OU before & speaking to one of the people. Most of the call centre people are either current or graduated students. They have so much insight to give. This was just my experience ☺️ If English is not your first choice, what do you want to study. What is your passion?

@@megancduffy Thank you so much for the detailed response! So nice to hear from someone who has graduated and to hear your experience with finding work afterwards, so I really do appreciate you taking the time to respond. Finding out that there is a hub to help you find work has took a little bit of the hesitation away that's for sure. I may even take your advice and give them a call just to talk to somebody before I make my final decision (plenty of time till the next enrollment starts). English Literature is my first choice, as it's just something love - History would be a close second. Both of which I was worried about potential career paths after graduating. My heart tells me to pick one of them, but my head tells me to do something like Computing and IT because of the career aspect.

No problem, I might do a more detail follow up video answering all the new questions. My first choice was performing arts & acting, but I knew I would need to actually have a backup plan & do something I can work with. Then have that has a hobbie. English is a great one because of the number of industries we can enter. History, I will be honest, is so difficult. Unless you choose to become a history teacher or lecturer. The great news is that in the first year of my degree (hoping yours will be similar), you learn a lot of history. Maybe you will be getting 2 birds for 1 stone in some way. The hub was a big help. It took several times of me going onto it & looking around for the jobs & just applying to eventually get something. Soon after, I did get into marketing. But also, knowing you have a Uni that you can comfortably call & ask questions also helps. I will say, because it's honest. If you get someone on the other line that is not helpful, hang up & try again. I will be honest I did have 1 or 2 times I had to recall because the person just wasn't helpful. Not a reflection on OU, just people are sometimes not interested, having a bad day or just don't know how to answer. But there is always someone who will 😊 I loved my OU experience & I do plan on studying something else. I just haven't decided yet 😁 I'm glad I could be of help😊 if you have any more questions. Don't hesitate to ask.

Honestly I see so many jobs that simply ask if you have a degree of any kind you instantly have a leg up.

Hi there, I did in my first year in 2019, I just had a regular retail job, then covid hit & I didn't work in 2020 & half of 2021. In my final year, I struggled to find a job & was able to take the time just to focus on Uni. I was lucky in that way. Short answer, yes 😁👍🏻 I hope this helps 🙏🏻
