@alexrico What master's did you apply for after your psychology degree at OU? I'm a mature student wanting to get my first degree in psychology and am considering joining the OU. Just a bit concerned on how easy or difficult it may be to get into a master's program after doing an online degree.

I'm nearly finished with de200. The most difficult module to date. Step up from level 1 is intense! Tutor support seems to be much less directive this year. Very vague. Lots of students in my cohort are feeling like they're doing it all by themselves which considering the tution fees os pretty rubbish. I'll be watching your de300 videos with interest as I'll be doing that the year after next. Great video. 👍

Tutors are really hit and miss. I'm only on my second and third modules having completed my first (TM111) in September. It starts so easy and then the difficulty ramps up but like you say, the tutors become a lot less supportive the harder the work gets which is kinda counter-intuitive. You'd think they'd give you MORE support when it's more difficult but nope. My first tutor was great, I couldn't ask for any more, but one of the latest two does nothing. I'm also finding the TMAs sometimes aren't quite covering what we've studied. And I study hard, like take notes from every page rather than just look at the TMAs and read the pages that relate to them only because it's my belief that everything we learn has some purpose, perhaps for future modules? Anyway, I'm sorry about your tutor. That must be a pain being on level 2. I'm doing a degree in IT and Computing and I find it tricky just juggling two different subjects (IT and maths) at once. It's hard to organise myself. And it's an even bigger pain that ALL my modules are 30 credits! So I've got to do 12 and I don't want to spend 6 years doing that but I might have to, seeing as so few modules start in the spring during level 2+3.

I'm halfway through DE200, the research assignment was my last one and i really struggled with it. I did get some support from my tutor along with them saying this was the biggest learning curve. All that you said about your experience with DE200 i had very similar experience during DE100. If it wasn't for a very attentive and supportive tutor in my following module i could well have given up. But it is always going to be pot luck which tutor you get either in Open or Brick. Anybody that has managed a degree through Open University really has worked so much harder to pass than Brick university and on top of that we need to reach higher marks to get same level degree as them. This is why employers value the OU graduates more.

Blaise, your accent is at once delightful and intriguing. I’ll hazard a guess - are you Armenian? Congratulations on your first, no doubt the reward of a hard and conscientious slog through a jagged and often arduous path. I did OU a very long time ago (BSc, MMath, Dip Stat) and am unfamiliar with online tutorials. I have in the recent past visited the OU website (signing in with my PI, which still works) with a possible view of signing up for an isolated course, but alas! I find that I can’t afford the OU’s current prices for their courses. Perhaps just as well, for I am far from confident that I are cerebrally up to such studies now. Best wishes.

I use to be an OU student - many years ago. I've completed two undergraduate degrees with them. I started a Masters degree but had to drop out due to a bad dose of laziness. Out of the 10 years of study - I had one 'bad' tutor. He failed to get back to me when I wanted some additional feedback on a TMA I had completed. After three weeks of waiting (with numerous polite reminders) - I decided enough was enough. He had previously failed to turn up to a day school - which angered a lot of other students in my region. I ended up replacing him with another tutor. My regional office responded really well to my complaint. My daughter is near to completing her first year with DD102 - I'll ping over your review! Thank you.

Thank you for being so detailed with your review! If I do end up pursuing an OU degree, it'd definitely be a social science, so I'm glad to have found this course-specific video. Really not sure what I'll end up doing yet though. Already did 2 years (2 different courses) at a brick & mortar uni not realising I had ADHD so I ended up dropping out. Now, I'd have to fund the first year on my own to be eligible for tuition fee loan for the remaining 2! :( Btw, did you study psychology at all before doing your degree? I did it at A Level and was familiar with some of the studies you mentioned...but it's been so long I worry my mind can't take it lmao

Thanks for your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I felt like detailed was the only way to go (tho you should see the amount of detail I go into my other OU videos 😂) I didn’t study Psych at A-Levels but I have wanted to go into the field since I was 15. What I heard basically is that 1st year = A Levels and then it gets more hardcore. I supposed that if you were seriously considering OU study, you need to prepare yourself for having to do a lot on your own. I’m not sure how compatible that is with ADHD! Good luck x

Hey! So student support was really good with me, but of course like everything else in the world - there's a bit of touch and go - but if you do end up being diagnosed with ADHD, do let The OU know. That said, you'll mostly study at your own pace, there's no homework, and you'd normally get plenty of prep time for assignments :)

Most psychology-related degrees from the OU are accredited by the BPS, which means that you will be able to register under GBC after you've graduated, but you will not be able to practice as a psychologist in any capacity because in the UK you will need a doctorate. Here is more info: www.bps.org.uk/join-us/membership/graduate-membership And you can find all the info that you will need on the BPS website. Good luck!

@@blaiseonthevid Hi Blaise, I already did. At the time of my comment here, I just finished the first tutorial of EK313 (Issues in research with children and young people). That's when I realised that the module is not for me but it was already late in UK so, I just went here in youtube hoping to hear student's experience with E312, because I was already convinced that this is the one for me. I originally wanted to take E312 for level 3 since I started the level 1. But since I enjoyed E219 last year, I thought Ek313 was some sort of continuation. So I registered without thinking. 2nd week of the module and first tutorial later, it hit me pretty bad that it is not some sort of a continuation. At that moment, I just felt that I can't go on with the module for the entire academic year. The next day, I called STT and asked to change module. They said that it's too late but they forwarded my case anyway and now I am still waiting the decision. I hope for a positive decision. I just can't imagine going on with the current module. Anyway, if I get the approval, that means that we have the same modules from level 1-3. Which is awesome!

There are always more negative reviews than positive reviews of anything on the internet. This video is of my experience, and thankfully it was mostly positive ☺️ Plus, they're cheaper BECAUSE they're an online university - you are in charge of your own education as a distant learning student. I feel like that is something that a lot of people misunderstand about distance study. Besides, you are free to transfer your credits to a brick university if you are unhappy with OU study. "Too late" is not true. I feel like my education with The OU was a lot more worthwhile than some of my friends who paid more to go to a brick university. But, again, this is my own experience.

Nope the OU isn't worth it, it was an isolating experience, much like today, you will find students in uni who's been forced to go online for the courses have all been hit by isolation and depression... The website for the OU is non user friendly, you get 1 lecture every few weeks, you're pretty much on your own and if you don't have a syringe support network, you will fail, unless you happen to be someone who thrives off being a loner then by all means, go for it.

  • @blaiseonthevid

Thanks for your comment - that's an interesting way to put your experience and I'm sorry that you felt that way. For me, it was made clear from the get-go that it would be different from brick universities. One has to realise that as a fully online uni, social interactions will be very different from brick unis, plus with online unis a lot of the work is on you - as I had mentioned. One can make friends via the OU forums and through the tutorials (especially f2f ones), or even through the many Facebook groups that are available. The tutors are almost always there as part of one's support network. I was an overseas student and had made a few good friends even through online tutorials, so making uni friends and having them as a part of your support network is not an impossible thing to do :)

@@blaiseonthevid you wasn't allowed to discuss TMAs so the point of a learning institution instantly became redundant because you couldn't bounce ideas from other students, majority of the online groups were people posting about mental health or simply bragging about how they passed, the ones who asked for help in understanding TMA questions were hit with answers such as "read the question again and then read this paragraph" without realising ya literally read the paragraph 300 times and you have writers block because you don't have someone else's genuine input to be able to see something from a different angle. I was doing Psychology and IT... Ones entirely subjective but was treated as objective which didn't agree with my core value learning system so I dropped out from that, and the other is completely logical... But BBC BITESIZE was able to explain computer algorithms much clearer because Primary school education has teachers teaching kids how to code..... Unfortunately that's where I drew the line and I shared some of that grievance with other students.... Many of them actually refused to believed that a bloody University course was broken down to easier parts to be delivered to 8 year olds..... 🤣 I'm pretty sure i must have crushed people's egos when I mentioned that to them because i was hit by waves of denials... Now My best friends 8 year old sister can code better than me... 🤣 🤣 🤣 The beaureucracy of education made me hate learning The first time When i had a keen interest in geography... The teachers killed that subject for me, I had lots of books to do with geographic locations, rocks and minerals but my god talk about the education system beating the interest out of your soul... And the second time when 8 year olds get a better education than you do on the same subject KS3 VS Level 4 Even my own ego was hit pretty hard, the education system is an embarrassment, which is also a huge understatement.
