On The Hunt Ep.23 Split Rings & Cabovers
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
#onthehunt #twinsticks #twinstickgarage
On this episode, I decided to take a break from truck building and went out to meet a big fan of the channel who found a set of ten-hole 10R22 split ring rims that I’m trying to collect to use on #ProjectSnowman a tribute truck to the one used in the 70’s trucking show Smokey & The Bandit. He also had some minty old trucks I had to take a closer look at and an incredible Ford CL9000 cabover that he’s doing an amazing job restoring. Then I stopped in at the local Kenworth dealer and took a closer look at a W990 all dressed up to work in the oil patch but found something surprising with the exhaust. Finally, I took a walk at the Ritchie Bros auction and found some more minty rigs including a ’73 K100 cabover very similar to the #IronDuke but had paint that was rougher than a stucco bathtub
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!

Don’t get me wrong, I love all your videos….but there’s just something about the On The Hunt series that’s so good…I never get bored or tired of watching them.
I pulled my 5th wheel over the Country from Arizona to Key West with my Cabover Freightliner with the commercial fifth wheel. What you can change is the pin box on the trailer to make that air ride and have more articulation. They also make a kit for the air over hydraulic brake system as well
The Cummins "Formula" series were designed to run at lower RPM's for fuel economy. The quest for fuel economy was a real big thing back in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Yes ... reminds me of the "Fuel Squeezer 6V92" that I ran in my 1979 GMC Brigadier ... at least I had a good mechanic who showed me how to "turn it up a bit" ...... LOL.
Love watching these On The Hunt episodes, it’s a great way for us that weren’t around for “the good old days” to experience what the lifestyle must have been like. Seeing the trucks dusty and used just hammers the point home.
You know something you never see at auction, or even for sale? Old R model Macks. I love those trucks! And you found one at auction, so thats A uncommon sight!

We had bunch of R models laying around but last 4-5 years some people from Nigeria been buying up all the r models from Alberta to Manitoba and sending them back to Africa. When they can't get anymore they plan on going to start going after the old cummins. Thier fuel is crap down there and this they can run or convert them for any fuel they want. You figure they would be picking up all the old 2 Strokes in that case. I was looking at 2 trucks that would have been perfect for the rubber duck but even the 3 my neighbor had including the couple rotted out cabs are all gone now. Theres still few being posted forsale but usally gone within an hour.

I thoroughly enjoy these auction hunts. Learn a lot during them. Need more.
The Schwalbe trucks are 4 door or 5 man cabs from the factory. They're mainly used for fire trucks and road crews. Down in the states people pull their 3/4/5 horse slants with living quarters with them.
That black KW has the same paint as my 2019 Nissan Frontier. How funny is that! 😂😂
Good afternoon I really like the auctions that you go to and when you go out through the field it's pretty cool looking for stuff so please keep that up just my opinion for what it's worth and I love how you put your show together it's very entertaining thank you so much Paul
Never get tired of watching your auction videos
Dammit After watching this video I had to watch Smokey and the Bandit.
My two oldest brothers ran convertible b trains (not super b's) back in the mid 80's. The company was based out of Salmon Arm B.C. .
The auctioneer sounds like my old two stroke dirtbike
Auction hunts are good. Keep them coming
I love the on the hunt episodes! My 2015 389 short hood and my 2018 567 both have the fake stack on the drivers side.
Aaah! Favorite part of the week, twin sticks time! Cheers from the european Canada aka Finland
I’ve got a first gen dodge built by the same company that built the crew cab kenworth, Schwalbe trucks. Old D-350 stretched out with a couch/bed and all. Badass truck.
Cat partnered with International on that deal. MaxxForce engine painted yellow was the biggest mistake. Many of them spent most of their time sitting at the dealer. Needless to say the deal didn’t last long.
@Thunderchicken69

There’s a road grading company near me that runs a few CAT tandems and all their guys say they absolutely despise them, they feel like they’re cheaply made and they have absolutely no usable torque whatsoever, which isn’t something you want in a truck marketed as a heavy duty construction industry truck
@colebertils7359
2 жыл бұрын
@@Thunderchicken69 most of them will eventually end up mechanically totaled and not worth rebuilding or re-powering. As far as the engines go, I know Cat was struggling to meet emissions standards after the somewhat failed C-series twin turbo Acert series.
Every time I watch the new episode I want to start in on my cadover
👍👌👏 Really great to have such fans respectively such a truck restoration community. Best regards, luck and health.
Nice truck
When I used to pass those newer trucks on the highway, I would look inside the top of the stack (on the left side) and never see any soot...always thought to myself, "wow those new motors burn CLEAN" Took me a long time to realize that most of the stacks on the left side are fake...what a waste of chrome...

I wonder what determines which trucks do or don’t get both stacks hooked up because our 16’ W9 has both hooked up. And it actually does burn clean enough that the inside looks new other than a little discoloration from the heat.
@chrislaswell5572
2 жыл бұрын
@@averyw.3939 I think it has to do with the new emission regulations that came in after 2009. The new emissions systems really choke the engines which reduces useable horsepower to keep unburnt fuel from getting into the air (no more "rolling coal"). Diesel exhaust fluid is added and will really, really corrode the chrome...which isn't a problem with the turndown tailpipes on the aero trucks. But on hood trucks, they figure that no one would buy them if they didn't have the two-stack look. But I think you CAN have both stacks connected aftermarket but might void warranties. Not sure about that tho.
@averyw.3939
2 жыл бұрын
@@chrislaswell5572 Like I said though our 2016 has both stacks connected, it looks factory and I doubt the previous owners went to the trouble of connecting it when the only other thing they changed was the visor.
@chrislaswell5572

@@averyw.3939 Yeah, after doing a bit more research I'm not sure. If you follow "Andy the Kenworth Guy" he says that one stack is how they come and that's just how it is. But the Rocky Mountain Peterbilt guy says that they come as one stack but they will connect both for a guy if he wants that and it would look like OEM. For sure the reason that having only one stack is standard is because of new emission requirements. But it sounds like, at least at the dealer level, they can connect both if you want that.
that roof cut out would be for an A/C unit...sweet paint job lol
We had an owner operator pulling sticks of our logging job in the 80’s with a big Ford cab over with a 3408 Cat with a double over 13 speed. It really sounded good!
My family is from kaslo BC. My grandparents on my ms side have lived there their whole lives. I am currently actually living in kaslo haha. Not to many people know about kaslo so it's always cool to see people that do.
that guy that didn't buy that cabover for 3K has to be kicking himself now lol
Bored of auction hunts? those are just as fun as working on the trucks!
Nothing better than coming home after a long day at work and having Twin Sticks to relax a bit I love Thursdays just for this reason. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Good lord that cabover has alot of runs in the black paint
I love the auction videos. I bet ritchie bros does too
I love the auction hunts always nice to see what for sale over the other side of the pond

Keep doing on the hunt even if your not hunting for anything it’s fun to look at all the trucks going over the block.
Do we get bored of the on the hunt series? Heck no! I love the on the hunt! Looking at stuff we can't afford 😍🤣
Whole lotta working trucks, and that auctioneer was the best!
I could never understand a auctioneer, the excitement in their voice put buyers into a state of mind where they have to bid to win.
This is the first “on the hunt” you’ve released since I discovered your channel. Finally get to watch a new episode! Love this series so much.

The square area in the headliner of that cabover KW was for a rooftop air conditioner. Those fuel tanks on it are not original. I had a '73 is how I know.
That first Cat truck was in fact a very rare truck for having a CT15. Cat pulled the plug on the CT15 early in the Cat truck run and most had CT13s, which were Maxxforce engines painted yellow. CT15s are truly C15s with some basic emissions, when deleted are very similar to pre emission C15s. Rare truck indeed!
Yup, Mr. Twin Sticks. My 13 speed is the same way as you described. An old style splitter and a plunger on the stick. I pulled the original one piece know and went to old school style.
Honestly only watching for the auction hunts

I had a Cabover Ford CL 9000 big bunk air ride suspension and air ride Cab had a 380 cat and a 15 spd she road good but the only problem I had aluminum frame it cracked on me and of course I had it welded but the frame cracked again in a different spot so great find on the wheels You talked about another build how about a White-Western Star 4800 with a Mercury Sleeper from another Great Truck driving Movie "Steel Cowboy" that truck was called The Outlaw she had a Cummins and a 13 spd spring suspension so I just gave you and Idea 🤔🤔 look forward to seeing your next update Have yourself a Great Day 😎
While I tune in for the updates on Snowman the on the hunt videos are great too. Eyeing that Mack eh? Rubber Duck project possibly? 🙂

That would be an awesome tribute truck, a mack with a can on the back and finding a jaguar so his wife could drive it. So it'll be a win win for the both. 🤔
Don’t know much about cat truck but the motor is a cat design sold to binder and rebranded to put back into the cat truck. So it’s a max force motor from binder. From what I’ve heard is motors good just everything around the motor is bad.
I live near a large Equestrian Park. We see a lot of those extended semis that they use to pull the horse trailers all over the country. They can be pretty nice along with the horse trailers too. I’ve seen a couple older trucks that they had converted/extended that actually looked pretty awesome.
You need a black mack a rubber duck then you will have the two biggest truck movies of the 70s covered
That fake stack must look as funny as heck going down the road in winter!!! Too funny,,,
I really think a set of those fuel tank covers in blue of course would look just minty on LBL. Great video as always!
Wow I bet that guy is glad he sent that k100 to auction instead of that old man buying it for 3k and I bet that old timer is sick to his stomach now😂😂😂
two story ford, im taking that
I know the 880 KW come with a single outlet dual stack.
please keep going to the actions i love it
Clt9000 is one of my favorite cabovers, main reason cuz they are super tall. I've never seen one up close amd personal but I've always assumed they could have made them flat floor.
That song at the end was da best.. Eminem can hide.. :)
Porter greetings! 🇺🇸 I love that old CL9000. What a beauty! 🤩 They we’re so amazing to look at. My brother has one and I hope that I get it one day. He just recently passed at 84 years old.😞 Love the old style split rims. I haven’t seen those in a while. Now that’s old school! 🧐 I love a truck with drop visors, but too many trucks have really low visors and I’m not a fan of those. I like to see ahead without bending over! Cat trucks…I think they’re so cool looking! 😎 I’ve heard the bit about the cabs being made by IH, but I’m not really sure about that. I saw one up close recently and I thought it was quite a good looking truck. My favorite of IH is the Lonestar! Oh yeah! 🥰 That K100 was a nice looking rig….put aside the lousy paint job and grass burner exhaust. It went for a big price: $15K Cad. 🧐 I love those toy haulers and find that they usually go for a hefty price! You sure found some good stuff at the auction! Thanks for taking us along! 🥰😎🇺🇸✌️
Love when you check out the auctions :) Always liked the CL's you got the best beaver shots from their high cabs. Sure wish FORD would have kept building big trucks . Worked for a company that did a lot of prototype work for FORD and we built a couple AERO MAX trucks and hauled them to all the big auto shows, we built a cutaway one that had the whole side open to see inside they called it the pink panther because it was a rose color, then one day they sold it all to Sterling :( Those were the days.

I wonder if Ford did keep going, how would their newer models look like compared to the older ones. I do know that one of the best models ford made was the LTL 9000, as well as coming out of the factory with a B-model Cat.
Bored?? ... Bored?? ... are you kidding? :.. most of us LIVE for Twin Stick videos!! Bring on the auctions and junkyards ... I've already got my boots on !!!
I think after you finish the Iron Duke, if you want to do another tribute, how about an FTL classic. Pork Chop Express
I think you should pick up an old Mack. An old flinstone model with the steel fold up hood, a 237 with a twin stick 10spd, or a 6 speed, its still technically a twin stick. lol. Swap out the rear end for a later model higher ratio single axle on airbags and kit that up to tow the camper. A guy of your tallent could rework the cab mounting to get it to ride on airbags. Do a matte black tribute to the duck. Not so pretty but a little bit sinister. That Ford next to the cabover sure went cheap. I always thought an LNT with a 6v92 in it would make a fun rig (like your wheel guy had). Thats as opposed to an LTL9000 with a cat in it that makes a damn good work truck. Remember the Kentucky hard runners?
You could do the convoy truck if you find an old Mack
Iron duke is quality compared with that black mess . Looked nice from 20ft too . That 9000 looked well tidy too ! Good job justin !
At least in Australia, the Cat engines were super popular and you could option them in Kenworth, Freightliner and Western Star. After the 3406 they had the C15 and C16. Cat decided they would capitalise on it and stop selling engines and make their own trucks. So they had an actual Cat engine in them. The CT610 had the C15 15 litre from 425 - 550hp and the CT630 was the big dog with the C16 from 500 - 650hp. They had different models in the states but yeah, they weren't popular here either. You only ever saw a few on the road. They were available in day cab but most had integrated bunks.
I'd put a low leaf suspension cut off a peterbilt on either cabover
The cab over looks like the one I sent you pics of last year.Looks like someone slapped black paint on it!Believe it was used for hauling his pull trucks! She looks a little rough !!!!!!! Lol 😆
I have a 73 900a parts truck with front aluminum tube type bud rims, will have to look and see what size they are. I'm not gonna use them, they are in Florida
Those prices seem crazy high
The new short hood 389 Pete’s and w900b kenworths are the same way only the passenger side stack is used drivers side is just for looks.
I hook my fifth wheel camper straight to my W900, I even swap the gooseneck hitch on my horse trailers to fifth wheel and pull them with the big truck
I think the Cummins 'Formula' were called 'Big Cam' in the UK and Europe and had 'E' in front of the rating. they came in E290 and E350 settings. I ran two Ford Transcontinentals with E350 engines and long wheelbases to haul longer pin trailers.
Good wholesome content! My boy is only 6 months old, but I hope you stick with the KZread content so as he gets older we can watch together and maybe one day get into a project.
The 2018 w900 I drove and the newer Pete’s we had had fake stacks on the driver side. I hate it.
I thought the Ford CL 9000's we awesome truck back in the day with exceptions. For a mechanic they were a PIA to work on and had air lines going everywhere. I thought Ford bailed out of the CL9000 too early and they could have been a great competitor. The CL 9000 had some awesome technology that surpassed PACCAR for many years. The air ride cab was about as good of a ride as one could get. The Formula series was set to run from 1500-1900 rpm in lieu of 1800-2100. The Formula pump was calibrated for the reduced RPM and the torque rise was set for the Formula range. Few owner operators liked the Formula’s reduced RPM, so they were mainly fleet engines. Most owner operators still had the 2100 RPM mind set to get over. Swwet paint job from Justin!
