Peg, i mess with a bunch of different Ford engines and that's the 8BA which was the last generation they made 49-53. There's a bunch of parts still made for them and they have shell bearings unlike the older 30's ones that had babbit poured. These are 239ci and rated around 110HP. The blocks like to crack around the exhaust valves so be careful.

I was working on the 4 cylinder flathead. Every one of the valve guides was stuck hard. I had to figure out how the valves go together, you know the hard way, because I stand to piss. And I just took a big punch and slammed the guides out of the bottom of the block. A little heat helped with that.

As for engine oil on a flathead Ford used to buy straight 30 weight but it got real hard to find. Rotella 15w-40 is a reasonable alternative. Too much fancy pants modern oils with too many detergents and such can and will wipe the bearings on an 8ba style Flatty. 8ba is the last variant of the flathead Ford from 1949-1953. Truck motors are different but still just as cool. The 8ba does use insert bearings like normal, so do the 59a motors from 1937-1948. The poured babbit bearing motors was the "first Gen" 1932-1936. Some '36 motors has insert bearings it was that model year when they changed over. Some people will say the 1934-1936 first Gen flattys had insert bearings but from what I've seen in real life and what I read those models were still the original poured babbit bearings. I'm totally ok with an old time flathead expert to prove me wrong, I'm just going off what I've learned over the years. I really do love these old piles of Ford iron.

I know a fair bit about flatheads. Those carbs only like about 2.5psi. From factory many had to high of fuel pressure. If you have any questions I can help you out with hit me up. Nolan

An Irish youtuber called Evenflow put up a video called Combustion this week that reminded me a lot of the 4th of July montage on this one. The only Ferd involved was a RWD Escort though.

Good thing about those flatheads is they don't seize up but the valves do but all you gotta do is remove the head and reuse the head gasket once you get all the valves unstuck. I have worked of getting a bunch of those old flatheads going most were mopar 6 bangers but a flathead is a flathead and they always run even with low compression and everything if you did not care about getting anywhere fast the flat head is the best engine no matter who made it and the inlines are even better
