    Interesting analysis Austin. I guess the answer to the “is it worth it?” question is driven by whether or not you’re specifically into the brand. This watch is one for the serious collector and/or specific Omega enthusiast for whom the 321 movement in a contemporary steel piece is something with historical significance, long awaited and therefore very desirable, so they’ll pay that hefty price tag. Would a die-hard Rolex fanboy feel the same way? Probably not (and understandably so) and to be fair the equally die-hard Omega fanboys probably aren’t paying the inflated prices Daytona’s are attracting these days either. As to whether or not it’ll hold its financial value, that depends, as you rightly say, on how available Omega decide to make this piece. For what it’s worth I suspect you’re right in suspecting that this is, in part at any rate, a prestige play with the Daytona on the other side of the equation, so I think Omega will keep the 321 fairly exclusive in order to avoid grey market discounting. But, when all’s said and done, it’s a quality watch which would grace any serious collection.

    Well, the Rolex fanboys are out in force poopooing Omega. Predictable. No one is forcing you to buy one. For me, it’s a great alternative to buying a vintage model of dubious origin and history. As Daniel says, vintage watches can be a ticking time bomb. With this you get a modern product with all the looks of the vintage watch. What’s not to like? Oh, and by the way, it’s not false patina on the lume, the original 105.003 lume had that tint.

    Investment potential: none despite making 2,000 a year only, as Omega will eventually roll out the 321 to other Speedy's if this one is a success, and it will be. It is however an interesting addition from an enthusiast perspective, being the first 321 movement in a steel reissue of a FOIS piece. It's undeniably an exciting time and promising direction for Omega. I'm pleased for the brand and the community . Would I buy one? No, I'd wait for a 321 steel Moonwatch in 42mm reasonably price i. e. 5 grand tops. I can make do with the 1861 Moonwatch if I really need to scratch that Speedy Pro space mission itch, which I don't at the moment. I'm currently enjoying the latest Racing 44 focused on the pre NASA racing heritage of the Speedy. But that's me. I'm sure this Ed White will sell out and rightfully so. Well done Omega.

    Give it two years and this will be 35% off through the usual grey channels. As if a daytona is worth 20k. No its because you CANT get them. Omega has to hold back production like rolex does. The new Speedy Ed White will have limited availability due to Omegas manufacturing method where each movement will be assembled by one watchmaker who can only complete two a day. I understand that currently, there are only 6 Omega techs qualified to assemble the movement...that limits production to 3120 units a year (assuming no time off).

  • @Portland_Living_Life
    @Portland_Living_Life4 жыл бұрын

    Austin, I think you are right about limited production numbers. The Omega marketing speaks to there being a special, dedicated workshop for these movements where the watch makers are focused on complete assembly of a timepiece including the watch head and bracelet. This suggests no mass manufacturing, but special, hand built timepieces in a small workshop. I am betting that Omega uses this as an excuse to produce low numbers, create an air of exclusivity, and thus drive up demand. They can blame the low supply easily on the exacting work that goes into the manufacture in this dedicated workshop. Sounds like a really special movement and watch, doesn't it? I don't buy the hype though, especially at $14K. Buy as an investment on speculation? No thanks, high risk here IMHO.

  • @watchsymposium

    Very interesting...well, that will certainly justify the price to some people. Still, I think the components will be mass produced, just not the assembly. But then aren't all mechanical assemblies done by hand? Anyway, it looks good on paper and that'll be good enough for some.

  • @Portland_Living_Life

    @Portland_Living_Life

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@watchsymposium I don't know that the 321 movement or components will be mass produced, so as to maintain that allure of exclusivity. The business model that I am thinking of is what Montblanc does. Most of their models are moderately priced and mass produced. However, their high end models are hand made in a small workshop they bought some years ago from Minerva. The care and craftsmanship that goes into building the Minerva movements is what MB uses to justify their higher prices, and rightfully so. I believe the 321 workshop will be to Omega what Minerva is to Montblanc.

    What we are seeing in the industry is that all the manufacturers who want to be in the race are raising prices, trying to close the gap between themselves and Rolex. Look the Rolex supply chain has left a lot of money on the table and people want to grab that money. In the next few years some of these companies will either be able to keep up or will have to drop out of the race.

    The market will obviously determine the prices people are willing to spend. But If people hold back and keep trying for a Rolex in lieu of other purchases it will further propel Rolex up the food chain. If people are fine buying other watches we will continue to see prices increase across all brands. For example more $8k oris watches or $10k grand seiko or $15k steel omega.

It will sell out and hold it's value but it's no Daytona. Just get a Speedmaster and save your money. As we have said so many times. Most people don't even notice your watch much less care what makes it tick. Final point it's not chronometer certified does meant it's not going to be accurate but at that price it better be.

    My gripe about Omega is how thick those watches are-maybe Omega doesn’t care... as Omega doesn’t even publish watch thickness measurement for its models (though it does publish lug width?!?), and one way they can screw it up is to make it too thick. Their latest SMP 300 is thick AF. Now I get it that it’s co-axial but their non-co-axial Speedmaster Trilogy ‘57 had a thickness of 14mm for a case size of only 38.6mm. It’s crazy to release a watch with such disproportionate measurements. As JC Biver said: “Thin is luxury.” Omega has some work to do

    They screwed it up, but not the way you described. They priced it WAY too high, and limited production TOO much, with their "single watchmaker'" gimmick. First, they should've made it (321) a standard-production movement. They could offer it (321) in this pre-Moon case (which I like) AND a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch case (which I also like). They could stay with the domed sapphire crystal, (and/or the spec-accurate Hesalite crystal, wouldn't matter), clear case back, ceramic bezel and vintage bracelet (ideally with their quick-adjust feature added to the clasp). They could've also provided a really nice stainless steel case back for swapping out, at additional cost, or as part of the package, and price the watch at $6,500 to $8,500 USD, depending. Had they done that, they would've had every Speedy owner, collector and first-time-buyer lining up around the CITY, not the block, to get one. It's really a shame.

    I have 321 50 years old! You really think that you gonna make money in Rolex ! Disturbed Rolex fan ! I The swatch group dwarfs Rolex by several billions. Not trying to hurt your feelings ! It is Sedna gold alloy . Don’t buy omegas.

    Not interested in this watch. For that money I’d rather have the Titanium Sedna Seamaster. Actually I think that watch is less expensive than this watch.

    From the comments I can honestly say that Omega fans so cheap. I’m ashamed to own an Omega to be honest.
