The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they'd play the right note no matter where they were struck. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars and amps.

This is my favorite of their videos because of how they play with the music itself and reimagine it even as they create a visual spectacle at the same time. All their work is wonderful to watch but this one feels like more of unified concept, and the musical aesthetic fits the lyrics better than the album cut, to me.

There's some understated poetry in asking "did we get it" after the take because, generally, to me, the song is about finding closure in a messy relationship. It's like asking whether finishing the take/finishing the song was finding the closure that's needed.

I absolutely adore this video. I dont care how old it is, or even if the band breaks up. I just want to listen to this song for hours. The direction is amazing, and to the crew, the person who had this idea and the people who built this course, thank you. I love this band, this song, and everything about this. I truly could not bear it if this song was not made. I couldnt live without it. Edit: ALSO FUCK YEAH DAMIAN GREAT DRIVING. I read the description. This took FOUR MONTHS to plan and FOUR DAYS to shoot. HELL YES KEEP ROCKING MY DUDES! I FUCKING LOVE THIS BAND.

I was one of the crew. I had it easy compared to some of the other guys on this but it was a really hard job. It was windy af which complicated matters. The art department deserved an Oscar for their work on this!

As an engineer, I relate to this video more than I can say. Four months to plan. Four days to pull off. All for a product that is beautiful.... It's what we live for - these guys do it with music. And it is beautiful.

This song has honestly been stuck in my head for a while. My 6th grade science teacher showed us this video for some reason and it hit me light a freight train for some reason. Might’ve been the lyrics or the action of this music video, maybe both, but damn this will always send me back to that classroom. Such a good song and music video in general.

There's a lot of STEAM in this. Science in how the music is made: the sounds and sizes of each thing, Math in spacing and proximity to the path of the car. Engineering in the size of the turning radius of the car (you can't do that with a Lincoln Continental). Technology? Lo-tech is not no-tech. It still has characteristics that can and have to be manipulated. Like the confetti box to surprise porch thieves? (look it up it's crazy!) The tech is not very high, but the engineer who engineered it had to put it together with respect to all the properties of the parts. Same here. And this wouldn't happen without the (performing) art.

Anthony Ivanov watch the making of videos, it explains how they did all of it. All the guitars are tuned to certain cords and the whole piano is tuned to be one note.

Anthony Ivanov all those instruments are tuned to one specific note they needed. So it doesn’t matter where it will hit it. Obviously there is some post editing and loops but it’s still impressive
