‘Obsessing About Revenge’: Ice Cream Man Murder Case is About Vengeance, State Says

Ойын-сауық

Opening statements were made first thing Monday morning in the Michael Keetley double murder trial. Keetley, a former Florida ice cream man, is accused of shooting and killing two brothers and injuring four others on Thanksgiving Day in 2010. Florida’s Assistant State Attorney Michelle Doherty told jurors Keetley wanted revenge after he was robbed that January inside his ice cream truck - the suspects got away with $12.

I'm surprised this case is tried again. Last time it was a mistrial, and before that it was a mistrial, too. The witness's memories are not getting better over time and last time was an absolute mess. The witnesses couldn't identify him, they said he wore something that he didn't. They couldn't identify the firearm, they couldn't even identify the car. And on top of it all the witnesses were shown to have a bias against the defendant because of the rumor publicized that he was the shooter. Lastly, all the witnesses were under the influence of drugs and heavy alcohol usage, taking their credibility away. I hope the state have better evidence this time.

Everybody who lives in a city knows this: If you are the victim of a violent and/or property crime, unless the police arrest the perp at the scene or in flight from the scene, chances are small he'll ever be arrested-and if the police have not arrested the perp within three days, the chances of them ever arresting the perp are remote, less than 1%. ▪︎ So this poor shlub gets robbed and the perps shoot him four times for the fun of it and, in doing so, they change his life forever. ▪︎ The cops don't find them, but they find the shlub of the story - can you imagine the laughter of the perpes?

This is what happens when the government doesn’t take crime seriously. The people take it into their own hands. It doesn’t matter if it was $12 or $1200, the resulting fear and trauma is the same for victims. And the fact that he was shot is, of course, an added trauma. If I’m a juror on this case, this approach by the prosecution is all wrong. She wants me to see obsessive revenge and vengeance but what I’m hearing is he sought JUSTICE when the system failed him. Terrible strategy.

Instead it was a 250lb man with a pump shotgun. 1st trial found him not guilty by 10 to 2 jury deadlock. He's been crippled for being shot 4 times, shattering bones and destroying nerves. Gun used in crime was never found so d.a. stated he just changed barrels. If he was that thoughtful, he would have been consistently on everything. This all stinks from the P.D. to the D.A.

No, it's a hopeless case for the state. Last time it was a mistrial because all the witnesses were just terrible. The surviving victims couldn't identify anything about him, misidentified the gun, and at the time of the shooting were using drugs and were totally drunk. And on top of it all, all the witnesses had a bias against him because of a shared rumor that he was the shooter.
