Murdaugh Murders: Lawyer Who Killed His Family to Save Himself - The FULL Twisted Story

The Murdaugh double murder mystery shook the South Carolina low country when Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were gunned down outside their own home in June 2021. As the investigation unfolded, eyes turned to the patriarch of the family, Alex Murdaugh, a fourth-generation lawyer in Hampton County who was once revered as a trustworthy and powerful man of law. News of other suspicious deaths, civil lawsuits, and stolen money connected to the Murdaugh family elevated concern among locals who started to believe the family could easily make things disappear. Nearly two years after Maggie and Paul were shot to death, in March 2023, a jury found Alex guilty of executing their cold-blooded killings -- a judge sentenced him to life in prison. The disbarred lawyer is now facing over 100 other criminal charges related to his admitted financial trickery. The Law&Crime Network's Angenette Levy and Jesse Weber break down the entire twisted story of Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced lawyer who killed his family to save himself.

I think it’s significant Alex told Marion “Whoever did this was planning it for a long time!” Paul was definitely going to do some prison time & Mags was going to always have Paul’s back….Alex knew his world was crashing down especially financially & Alex knew he’d lose Maggie (as that was already somewhat in the process being more apart than together) and so, Alex chose the worst imaginable mercy killing to save what he could fit himself & Buster! And as his dream fir Buster becoming a lawyer is “Dust in the Wind” it should be interesting to see how it all plays out?! Alex’s life will most likely resemble Shawshank Redemption (helping inmates w their cases) though he will never get out! Very sad saga & I would never wish the lifestyle they had = The more you have the more you have to do to keep it!…

I agree. If the video had never shown up, no way could anyone prove that he was there unless some other form of evidence was discovered. He had to admit to the lies after that. And as Mr. Waters stated, he had to come up with a new story, which he did. Fortunately it fell short and he convinced no one.

Several motives converged the night of the murders. The final catalyst was the power struggle between Alex and Paul re: the pills. Addicts often kill to get their drugs when facing withdrawal symptoms. Paul had confiscated Alex' pills. Alex needed them. Paul foolishly tried to assert dominance over his father. In a rage Alex shot Paul and rifled his pockets (the phone did not "pop out") to take back the pills before he left the scene. Maggie supported intervention in Alex' drug use, she had control of the real estate Alex wanted to liquidate and, as a witness to Paul's murder, her fate was inevitable. I cant figure out why Alex took her phone or why he was in a hurry to leave his mother's house.

Alex fit many parts of a typical psychological profile of a family annihilator - middle aged man, used to control, facing financial disaster and reputational ruin, and burdens in his view coming from all those he killed - Buster not being a lawyer, Paul murdering Mallory, Maggie leaving him but knowing way too much...Chris Coleman, Chris Watts, Anthony Harvey (Australia) -far too many to mention and all a special, horrific kind of twisted.

Always read between the lines when dealing with a sociopath. The videos of Murdaugh acting happy were all the day of or day before the murders. That means he was trying to convince them that he was turning over a new leaf, and they were happy to see him smiling, after years of him acting like an abusive psychopath. When they talk about processing how someone could do this when just laughing and having fun minutes before, psychos like this guy don’t think of people as people. If a person is in the way of them getting what they want and thinks they can get away with it, that’s all they need to do something. It doesn’t even need to be anger necessarily. This man had a lifetime of getting away with stuff and it ended up being a deadly combination in this case. A person to them is an object that is either serving their needs in some way or in the way of their goals.

Alex told us the motive over and over that it was the boat accident. He said he knew for a fact that whoever did it had anger in their heart, he also told Marion that whoever did it thought about it for a long time. Paul was looking at going to prison for murder and that would shame the Murdaugh name and expose his financial crimes. I think Maggie was investigating their financial problems and pressuring him about the pills and she could have possibly asked for a divorce.

He saw them both as a liability and a financial drain. He spent the afternoon with Paul as he knew it was the last time he would spend with him. To Alex the potential cost of Paul's trial + that the boat crash set into motion the uncovering of Alex's crimes trumped being a father. Alex comes first in the world of Alex Murdoch. He saw Killing Maggie as also part of the solution to his crimes. All of their houses would go to him which he could sell and pay back the people he stole from. In his mind, and with his Good ole Boy connections he thought right, that he could get away with it by paying the money back and Maggie was where the money would come from. He felt that through sympathy of the public he would be given leniency in the financial crimes and able to pay it back. They weren't living together and I believe about the divorce lawyer. Alex had no issue murdering Maggie.

I believe Alex was bending over to pickup the 300 blackout or fell back on the first shot. Alex's angle was caused by a very low angle shot, and I believe he had no intention of shooting Paul in the head. The commentators say Paul was shot in the head intentionally. I don't believe that at all. Maggie is another story all together. My belief is all those shots were intentional. She wanted a divorce and was doing a financial audit. I watched the entire trial and it was very sad. Every since they found Alex guilty I can barely sleep and eat because this took a toll on me physical and emotionally. I just don’t understand how a man with a lot of power, money and had a good family could do something so terrible. Maggie or Paul didn’t deserve none of this it’s sad.

Too much power often leads to this and families are still doing this. I don’t feel bad for them. Paul took someone’s life and was perfectly fine with them not getting justice although his actions caused her death and the mother taunted the dead girls mother saying they may never find her body . That entire family is evil and got what they deserved: buster is next. He will pay for killing Stephen smith and I hope stephens mother is still alive to see as his father died from a broken heart 3 months after he was brutally murdered.

@@sabrinamonroeI agree. Too many people are feeling bad for them..Why? Paul killed someone innocent, spit in her face and was terrorizing her with his behavior until she ultimately died from it. His mother was fine/happy enough to go along with and support him. I don't have sympathy for anyone in this family.

You’re barely scratching the surface of this family. They have so many powerful connections in the law community that they think they’re above the law. Prosecuting Alex was just opening a can of worms. Maggie and Paul certainly were no saints and I’m sure more info will come out about them. I’m particularly interested in more of Buster’s skeletons in the closet coming out. Alex and Maggie by all accounts were terrible parents to Paul & Buster. They let them have too much freedom and no consequences for their actions. Paul went down a slippery slope of mistakes and Alex probably thought he was too much of a liability so he killed him. Not justifying Alex’s actions either. So much secrecy, lies, deception and narcissism in that family.

1st, I am not a Lawyer. But I have been a juror several times. My feeling about why Mr. Waters spent so much time having points repeated and repeated. Since the jurors were not able to take notes at all, Mr. Waters wanted to make sure that the important points-the evidence and the lies- were hammered into their brains. IMHO The jury must have found some strength and peace with their decisions, guilty on all 4 counts, because of Judge Newman's very poignant and heartfelt agreement with them. Again IMHO I felt that the Judge 's ending statement to this man and the trial was outstanding and powerful. Telling AM that his wife and son would visit him every night for the rest of his natural life, when he was trying to go to sleep, was an image that took my breath away. I wouldn't want to be Alex Murdaugh for anything!

Anngenete is it plausible the reason Maggie and Alex phone didn’t match together is due to her leaving her phone in the golf cart because she didn’t show steps at kennels. When Alex killed them and returned to the house on golf cart noticed Maggie’s phone and knew he could go back down and leave it there. Her phone I believe tracked 52 steps which could be Alex taking it out the golf cart and putting it into his car. His phone still in the house at this point.

It was justice to finally see this monster in a used, frayed prison outfit. It must have made his skin crawl & that's a wonderful thing. His appeal threat is hollow. Less than 5% of murder convictions are overturned. Less than 1% of murder convictions are overturned when the defendant takes the stand. His ego will keep him where he belongs.
