The last 3 songs are the soul of this album... Omegaman, Secret Journey and Darkness. Three of the best Police tracks ever.

I wish people would talk about Darkness more it’s simplicity in every instrument incorporated within the song is genius and makes the song sound transcendent

Stewart's song Darkness is epic

The Police were a miracle. No other way to describe it. Saw them in 1984.

By far my favorite Police album. I remember buying it with my best friend the day it came out.

Some of my all time favorite songs on this album. Every Little Thing She Does has to be one of the most truely beautiful love songs ever recorded.

What about Omegaman song .For me is awesome and underrated . The guitar solo is Amazing.

I say by far my favorite Police album -- from package to final note. Stewart's drumming on "One World" is just ridiculous.

Should have been longer and more meat to it. Had much more potential but great song

Secret Journey is still my jam.

Love this album....for me its the 'winter album' ....... the textures and moods on this album are so wonderful.

I’ve followed the police most of my life and love your video. Saw them twice live. That drum fill by Stewart on Everything She Does is fantastic.

My favorite police album.

"Ghost in the Machine" is probably their most experimental album. "Invisible Sun" feels like the sort of song that U2 would of made - you can definitely feel that. I think the addition of the extra instruments like the synth keyboards and saxophone are a real change to their sound. It's certainly sets it apart from their previous works.

Ghost is my 2nd favorite of 5 favorite releases. Demolition Man is fantastic use of the horns you describe - the song swings and rocks and the same time Darkness is a happy surprise at the end. Who knew Stewart could be deep?

Great review, this is my favourite album, I love Secret Journey

I love GITM as it’s dark, mature and deliberate. The drum sounds are great on it. I love the B sides Shambelle and Low Life. There’s a lot of vamps, bass ostinatos and guitar chords that repeat like Talking Heads during the Fela Kuti influences on Remain In Light. Andy Summers lived in my town in Ireland in 1981, in fact he bought a house there, and I saw him the odd time. He also uses a guitar synth on the album. The album title is taken from a book by Arthur Keostler.

My favorite album from my favorite New Wave band. Gen X kid here. A dense dark moody album . Andy Stewart and Sting really kick out the jams on this one. CD and headphones music for sure

Very impressive review. One of the most complex albums of its era. I find it musically very mercurial. It never sounds the same with each play. I bought it the day it came out but I still find it mysterious.

Brilliant prognosis....greetings from Queen Anne's Maryland.

It'S a dense, dark record. It fit perfectly in the geo-political environment at the time. They were experimenting with ways to bring the recorded sounds into live performance. Some of it worked and some of it did not. Still, it is a brilliant album, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in pop music at the time. Synchronicity I and II were and extension of this ethos. The rest of Synchronicity was a return to the use of space. Ghost is a claustrophobic record which I think might have been a reflection of how Sting was beginning to feel musically and living his life so much in the public eye.

I am loving this series! This album is so amazing and I play air drums to it all the time....as others have said and you pointed out....the last 3 tracks are magical.

The police really didn’t start making $ till after the 3rd album , that’s how you see the band growing. And the 3rs album was rushed because they were picking up steam and needed to get a album out and I loved it...

Every album topped the last one in studio tricks.Super producers Nigel Gray and High Pagdham genuises

Really appreciate your appreciation of this album. And although Stewart wrote Darkness (and super creds for that ) Sting owns that song with his singing. Haunting and brilliant to this day. It's a shame Sting never performed it post Police, but it's understandable.

If you listen very carefully, Stewart is singing with him on the verses in unison. Same with Miss Gradenko.

Andy said that Sting's sax parts took him a while to play perfectly and cost a fortune to record.

When this was first released there was a feeling throughout the fan base that stings political ideology was casting a shadow over the DNA which made up the bands identity. That’s not to say we didn’t recognise the quality of many of the songs but for many of us it wasn’t an album which easily complimented the earlier work where songs written about love and relationships became increasingly infiltrated by issues of politics which began to take over the entire show and made Ghost a stranger to many of us. I know Andy was also less than happy about the infiltration of the brass section during the tour which was synonymous with stings quest for control in the years leading up to 1984. Best songs: Stewart’s Darkness, Secret Journey, Every Little Thing and Low Life which ironically never even made it onto the album!

Inteersting the ELT was actually written in 1977 when Sting had just left Newcastle and wasn't totally sold on the idea of The Police....

Stewart Copeland would probably tell you that himself as he openly talks about how he crafted his own style. He hosted a BBC documentary on drums where he charted the history of the modern drummer from their inception with the invention of the kick bass and talks about his own influences, the different styles/genres plus there's interviews with some of his contempories like Sheila E, John Densmore and the late Taylor Hawkins.

GITM was too dark. I didn't care for it. Regatta was their finest.
