Bombs Away is a highlight of Zenyatta would/should have been a hit song for any other band, Police were so good they didn't need it!

I'm pretty sure Every Breath You Take was influenced by Leo Sayer's version of I Love You More Than I Can Say, which was a huge hit in 1981, to the point that both songs share the same melody in their breaks ("Don't you know I love you so, tell me please I want to know" vs. "Oh, can't you see/You belong to me).

I remember the day it came out; I'd been waiting for it, and the video for "Every Breath You Take" had already come out on MTV. It was in June, 1983. I was 14. My mom took us to the local mall in whose record store I bought the album. Then we saw Psycho II in that theater. When I got home and started playing it, and when "Mother" came on, I was, needless to say, freaked out. Then I saw them in Largo, MD, in August '83, and the opening band was a young REM (Murmur had come out), and then I entered another new world.

Hey, Jeff! This is Mike from the party at the park commenting on another video. This episode is great and I'm enjoying it. Would love for you to explore, in future episodes, Sting's early "solo" career like we talked about today. I put the word solo in quotes of course because of the phenomenal musicians Sting surrounds himself with.

One of the reasons Synchronicity was such a massive seller was the different formats it was available on. When it came out in 1983, people were running out and buying the album on vinyl. Everyone had a turntable at home. Then car stereo, boomboxes and Sony Walkmans primarily used cassette tape. Yes, some people would make there own cassette tape, taping it off the album. But hardcore Police fans like myself would buy the commercialy available cassette tape for the best sound. Then from out of nowhere, here comes Compact Disc. Promising better sound by way of digital technology.

Great series! From what I remember, Every Breath You Take was written about his wife and their divorce, and If You Love Somebody Set Them Free from his solo album was the follow up to that song, after he had time to come to terms with his divorce and let his ex-wife go emotionally.

Absolutely agree. Start from their first album and work your way through to the last. You will be amazed by the growth and sophistication in their evolution as a band. Synchronicity is one of my Top 5 albums. I was a junior in HS when it came out and played it endlessly. If you get a chance, catch the isolated vocal and music tracks of "Synchronicity II" here on KZread. It's a real treat for Police fans.

One of the best concerts I've ever been to was The Police in 2008. I remember there was an amazing percussion setup that Stewart was playing on for some of the songs and was thrilled to find the video of Stewart playing from that tour. "The Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger (video of Stewart Copeland)" is a title on KZread.

I thoroughly enjoyed your review on all of the Police’s albums. To me they were thee band of my generation. I first seen them at The U.S. Festival and again at Hollywood Park. Amazing, amazing live sounding band. When MTV did the world premiere of Every breath you take I actually got teary eyes knowing this was gonna be their last album. Your insight on the music and progress was spot on and I learned quite a few new things from watching your reviews on all their albums. Once again thank you for this.

This album is a palpable memory, and I remember the moment it was unleashed on our unsuspecting , vulnerable, youthful selves. It's tied up with my landing in Germany on a month long study trip, with all my travel mates (we being all upper middle class American kids) talking about it endlessly. I wondered what the buzz was about at that point, but my first year at college, which followed that, was saturated with this and other new music - almost wrecking and rebuilding my musical world, actually, but I'm thankful it happened that way. Anyway, I see "Mother" (which many of my college classmates derided unjustifiably) as being very much an outgrowth of Andy Summers' contact with Robert Fripp - they'd just made "I Advance Masked" - and that came across to me only many years later, after becoming more familiar with King Crimson

This was ALL great! I've always seen the first two and last two albums as companion pieces and the middle album as the transition piece. I like how you looked at the whole discography as a body of work (essentially one piece) and the progression the band made from beginning to end.

I feel that the musical dynamic from the Police is interesting because of the different styles being mashed together, yet with an outstanding pop sensibility. I really enjoyed your in-depth reviews that focus more on the album cuts. I also believe Police albums have very little filler and are best experienced as a whole. I never liked the idea of "singles" from their albums. I feel that way about the Beatles albums also. The albums are a full experience. Anyway, thank you for the in-depth reviews.

  • @kpa272

I remember reading something about the sides of the album (possibly in Musician, an old music monthly), how it's quite possible that they were switched at some point. Which makes sense, with the singles strangely being on Side 2, and both Andy's and Stewart's tracks on Side A, when in the past they were both relegated to the back half of the record

Not recording the show at She was a failure of management which should never have happened. Given their ties to MTV in 1983 it’s almost unbelievable that the gig at Shea Stadium wasn’t captured for posterity. On not leaving tracks out of the album we differ on that one where tracks like Mother and Gradenko brought nothing to the sessions other than arguments and hostility. The far more sensible thing for Stewart and Andy to have agreed to would have been to play the long game by agreeing to drop the tracks and allowing higher quality material by Sting to be included. Making such a small concession might well have enabled a follow up album to materialise with untold musical riches. By demanding the inclusion of Mother and Gradenko, Stewart and Andy might well have point scored in the short term but ultimately those tracks weren’t worth losing the band over

Andy originally wanted "Someone To Talk To" on the album but in the end "Mother" was chosen just because of it's oddball nature. He was separated from his wife Kate at this time as well.

I have been thinking about this for a while. My channel is an extension of a text blog, and I have made an effort to avoid revisiting albums I have previously written about. I covered Dream of the Blue Turtles in text a few years ago, so to cover Sting would require me to break this unwritten rule. But I kinda want to do it. In the meantime, here's the old post: drspinsmusicalmusings.blogspot.com/2011/04/dream-of-blue-turtles-in-chapmans-class.html

Pressure makes diamonds. The greatest groups and ensembles always had friction. Having said that, no one comes close to Sting's songwriting and arrangement instincts. The Beatles come to mind and they were the greatest. but... that was two and sometimes three and then a fifth.

I know I am definitely in the minority but I found this album to be such a dissapointment when it came out. I was 15 and a huge police fan up to this point. Sting, Stewart and Andy were one of a kind characters in a story that should go down as the best ever, but on their own, they weren't even close to what they were when they were together. Ghost in the machine was my favorite album and then Outlandos D'Amour, Regatta De Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta were tied for 3rd and then there was Synchronicity. To me, synchronicity marked the beginning of the end of new wave originality, A movement that slowly morphed into a commericial enterprise with ridiculous clothes, hair and gut wrenching pop songs from people like madonna. Sting is a great great songwriter, there is no doubt, but his solo stuff proved that he could only be so good without the police, and by good, I mean slightly better than average with an occasional spark of genius. This album had way too much commercialism and was too over produced for me. It took away a lot of the originality that made the police such an awesome band. It was a perfect example of sting's massive ego at the time. Having said that, I still think it was a great album, just not a great police album. Not a fact, just my opinion.

I vividly remember Stewart Copeland being a guest on some MTV show, and being asked what he though of DSSCTM '86, and him just saying "for me, the original is where it's at". I'm not a musician, so I know I can't fully appreciate the amazing talent that Sting has, both as a songwriter and as a musician, but man, I find his solo stuff to be, for the most part, completely insipid.

As a fan from 1979 ( ten years old ) synchronicity was my least favourite album . I cant decide if it was the production for me or the songs . Apart from the hits that were released I think the song writing was dragged out of the band . Oh my god / mother/ miss gredenko/ tea in the desert 😉/ very lacking in the passion department in my opinion, I wont mention the skip track as it's always mentioned as the best selling single etc etc . Synchronicity for me signalled the end of my favourite band and maybe that just leaves a sour taste in my mouth .

As another fan from 79, I have to say I feel the same way. Even though I fully accept that the band couldn't keep still and had to move forward musically, out of the five albums, this one feels the least like a Police album to me. More of a stepping stone to Sting's solo career. Don't get me wrong though. It's still a great album.

I share a good portion of what you and fightersweep feel about this album. The albums I play the most from them are "Zenyatta" and "Ghost". Those two albums are superb and really capture a uniqueness that I have never experienced before from any other band ever. Almost other worldly sounds. The things Andy does with his guitars on those two albums are mind blowing and like nothing I have ever heard before or since. With "Synchronicity", you can really feel Sting pulling away from the band and wanting the sound to be truly his and his alone. Aside from the incredible guitar work from Andy on "Every Breath You Take", this song as well as "Tea In The Sahara" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" really, for the most part, feel like Sting solo songs. I still love the album, but it is not my all time favourite from the band.

I have heart this thing of Synchronicity not being the true Police. I can’t disagree more. For me, like the Beatles before, the Police was a force in constant motion, changing, exploring. How many Zeniatas are needed? Synchronicity is the perfect record, no waste, a collection of great songs and sounds, top ten in the History of R&R.
