O2 Sensor Replacement Fixed Rough Idle & Limp Mode of E90 M3 [ENG SUB]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Malfunction of an oxygen (O2) sensor BEFORE the catalyzer caused BMW E90 M3 rough idle and limp mode. The replacement of the O2 sensors before cat and adaptation reset resolved the problem.
[Errata] The “thread glue” I mentioned is actually an anti-seize lubricant.
The cold start process of stock E9x M3 may generate misfire codes. See this video “Cold Start Delete DIT Fixed Rough Idle and Misfire Codes”: • BMW E90 M3 Cold Start ... for more info.
A bad O2 sensor before cat stops the engine control unit (DME) from calculating correct air to fuel mixture. The engine will end up in poor combustion, misfire, vibration and eventually limp mode (or limp home mode, BMW’s protection for the engine.) Here I changed the O2 sensors before cat on both banks of the S65B40O V8 engine to ensure the DME gets an accurate signal. After the replacement, adaptation reset of the O2 sensors is necessary. And the replacement successfully fixed the problems mentioned above.
**Codes for O2 sensor before cat. on bank 1(they came randomly)**
2724 DME: Oxygen sensor, signal before cat., bank 1

I’m happy you like this video 🤗 I had the same warning message twice due to: 1. poor connection of SZL plug: access the switch column and use electric contact cleaner to clean the plugs before re-plugging it. 2. throttle actuators failure: the malfunction can be the actuators or line connections. Need to see the code. AND DSC codes can be cleared only if DME has no codes. So make sure the problems and codes on DME are all cleared. The M3s have high and uniform quality so they all have same issues 🤣 don’t worry pal, there must be a fix for us. Best wishes!

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Cy! I’ve checked the posts regarding the O2 sensor fuse on some forums. I’ve also checked the wiring diagrams of E9x Ms/non-Ms in ISTA. Here’s my summary; An O2 sensor does not have an exclusive fuse. All the wires on an O2 sensor are connected to the engine control module (DME). The heating power of an O2 sensor is provided by the DME. So the actual fuse you mentioned is one of the fuses for the DME. I guess people are pulling the fuse to reset the DME to clear the fault codes related to the O2 sensors. There are two fuses via which power goes to the DME; one for power loads (30A) and one for the electronics (10A.) For the E9x M3’s DME (MSS60) the fuses are F4 (10A) and F39 (30A). There is also another DME main relay (K6300) integrated in the fusebox A4010. NOTE: fusebox varies with production year! You are welcome to mail me via: funcarsgoodpeople@gmail.com and let me know your VIN. I’ll send you the related documents and wiring diagrams.

    I have a BMW E60 528i with an O2 Sensor code of 2CA6 (O2 Sensor heater circuit error Bank1 Sensor1). Car runs and drives just fine but the check engine light is on. No limp home mode. I have a 50/50 shot that it's either the O2 sensor needs replacing of the car's wiring harness for the O2 sensor is shot.

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    @funcarsgoodpeople

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi CJ it's good you are aware of this fault so when something happens you can take action right away... and the right way 😁 I guess the O2 sensor can still work without the heater circuit because exhaust temperature is high enough to keep sensor at it's working temperature. But it's likely to give wrong data when the car is cold. I searched 2CA6 in ISTA for E60 528i and quote this; Condition for fault memory entry: O2 sensor temperature Action in service: 1. Visual inspection of wires, DME plug and O2 sensor for damage 2. Check wires (including resistance) 3. Check plug-in connections DME Wiring harness Upstream (pre-cat) O2 sensor on Bank 1 (water or corrosion in the plug? => Repeatedly disconnect the plug and then FIRMLY press it back in) 4. Replace O2 sensor 5. Replace DME I hope it's just a minor wiring harness problem for you. Come back and let let know how it's fixed. Best.

    Hi idrisu, so your problem is cylinder 3. Plug and coil seem not to be the problem. You can try swapping the fuel injectors which is not difficult (but expect minor fuel spillage). If not the injector, I would do a compression test to see what’s wrong with cylinder 3 ☹️

    Just seeing this video but i have an e92 with the n54 and my car is misefiring in cylinder 2 and is running code p0040 with the misefire code p0302. Could the o2 sensor failing create misfires ?

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    @funcarsgoodpeople

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Antonio, the P0040 code implies that the o2 sensor connectors of bank 1 or 2 may be mistakenly swapped. The six cylinders are divided into two banks and I believe their o2 sensors are very close and identical. Please check the connectors to see if they are correctly installed. You can also clear the codes, swap the connectors and see if P0040 comes back. Sometimes cleaning the connector contacts will also help. I don’t think P0302 is related to P0040. There may be a bad spark plug or ignition coil on cyl. 2. Usually we swap the plug or coil ONE AT A TIME to see if misfiring goes to the other cyl. If so we can nail down that faulty part. Please come back and let us know how it works for you. Best luck!

    Hi Sakk thank you for the message! Could you please show your fault codes? Let me check more in detail. For my case, there will be fault codes about O2 sensor if it is really broken. The " catalyst system efficiency below threshold(bank2) " code doesn't tell about a broken sensor. We need to keep monitor about this one.

I also replaced both upstream oxygen sensors and the codes went away except 2c9e and now I’m getting code 3100 as well and it’s pretty much doing the same thing as yours rough idle and limp mode. I still have yet to replace the downstream oxygen sensors tho but could this be the reason why I’m getting the 3100 code as well as the 2c9e? Also mines an 09 335 e90

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    @funcarsgoodpeople

    9 ай бұрын

    Hello Bruskii thank you for the comments. I believe you have done the right work. But did you #reset the #adaptation after the replacement? The DME has to reset the biased values it learnt from previous #O2sensors. I guess that code 3100 is due to incorrect adaptations in the DME. If the DME sees something wrong about the emission, it may put the car into some strange mode. 2C9E is due to the sensor after the #catalyticconvertor and it shows #heating is not working. If the fuses are normal, then it's likely the sensor after cat is bad. You may have to replace the whole sensor. This can be confirmed by swapping it with the other sensor after the cat to see if the code becomes 2C9F.

    Hello Purwokerto, please check the two wiring harness (or the plug connector) of the two O2 sensors. Make sure they are not mixed up or swapped. Adaptation reset is also needed because the DME does not know new sensors are replaced. Maybe you can use the disconnected battery method to reset the whole car. Otherwise a diagnostic tool/software is needed to do the reset.

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    @funcarsgoodpeople

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dev thank you for chiming in. I don’t think the rough idle is related to the X pipe and sport cats. What I often heard about rough idles are related to the fuel tank breather (rough idle after filling a full tank) and the idle control valve. I had the misfiring codes on all 8 cylinders when I still had the stock cold start function. Usually the codes came when the car was having the asthma (for warming up the cats to reach emission standards quickly.) There was nothing else than the codes and a check engine light. After this function was tuned out, I NEVER had all-8-cyl-misfiring codes anymore. The E9x M3s all have similar problems so don’t worry it is likely something already happened to someone. Plz check if your car has the stock DME tune, a bad fuel tank breather valve or bad idle control valve. Best wishes!

    Hi AlexSib, you are talking about the codes for E9x M3 right? I checked on bmwfault.codes and the codes imply broken harness or short circuit of the O2 sensor before cat on bank 2. Please see below; 2729: DME: Oxygen sensor, coast-mode diagnosis before cat., bank 2. Check plug and wiring harness to pre-cat oxygen sensor LSVK B2 (focus on opens in wires for virtual ground and pumping current). 274B: Oxygen sensor pump current calibration fault before cat. converter, bank 2. Check plug and wiring harness on pre-cat oxygen sensor LSVK B2 (especially trim circuit wire IA). Since you have replaced the O2 sensor, there is possibility that the harness or wiring got broken, as indicated by the fault codes. Please come back and let us know your progress!

    Hi Wili thank you for leaving a comment! Yes there is an reset function for the accelerator pedal. Maybe your diagnostic tool has this function so just try it. I think it won't hurt. Here's the information I found in ISTA about the Accelerator Pedal; === The accelerator pedal module detects the driver's instructions for altering the speed of the vehicle. Design and function The position of the accelerator is detected by a special sensor and analysed by the digital engine module (DME). The accelerator module is fitted with two independent Hall-effect sensors. Those sensors each transmit a voltage signal corresponding to the current pedal position. For safety reasons, two sensors are used. On that basis and taking other engine operating parameters into account, the required position for the throttle valve is calculated. The throttle valve is then operated by the throttle valve positioner. The accelerator module receives a constant voltage of 5 V from the DME. For safety reasons, each sensor has a separate power supply. The two Hall-effect sensors transmit a signal that is proportional to the pedal position. The signal from sensor 2 is always exactly half the voltage of the signal from sensor 1. The two signal voltages are permanently monitored by the DME. Diagnosis The maximum engine output is limited in the event of a fault. The vehicle has a delayed response to abrupt movements of the accelerator pedal. If two faults occur simultaneously, the engine speed is limited to max. 1500 rpm. The relevant fault codes are stored on the DME identifying the faulty Hall-effect sensor. The following faults can be detected: - Hall-effect sensor short circuit - Signal above Hall-effect sensor voltage range - Signal below Hall-effect sensor voltage range - Implausible difference between signal levels of the two Hall-effect sensors - Power supply failure or voltage too low === I suggest trying to clean the connector pins of the pedal module. The poor connectivity of electrical contacts often leads to such kind of fault codes. If that doesn't help, probably the pedal module needs to be replaced.

    Hi Cathy you are welcome. This reply is about OBD2 scanner. BMWs will show its faults in terms of P codes (fault codes beginning with letter P) which is common among most automobiles. So any scanners can read the fault codes. However, BMW has its own code system (4-6 digit number mixed with English letter, as shown in my video) to give very detailed description about certain symptom. i.e. L6 and V8 engines may show same P code about O2 sensor problem, but you have to decode BMW fault code to see which bank of the exhaust is having the problem. I used an OBD2 scanner once but it did not give me enough information, especially for those BMW-specific modules. No corresponding P codes were read out. I use INPA or ISTA, the PC diagnostic software to translate BMW fault codes. But if you feel too inconvenient messing with diagnostic tools, you can go to nearest shop and ask them to read out the fault codes for you. Please take photos of every code you get. I can look it up for you in ISTA. Or if you can get the BMW codes, we can look it up together on bmwfault.codes/

    Hi Cathy I got your descriptions. I searched roughly and found that flashing check engine corresponds to misfire. And the failure of high pressure fuel pump (HPFP), which is common problem for N54, can cause the misfire (cylinder not getting enough fuel.) But this is just a rough guess. The check engine light will leave a lot of fault codes for us to troubleshoot. They will tell you which cylinder out of the six is having trouble, or some other malfunctions the car detected. So I suggest doing a diagnosis with OBD2 scanner as the first step!

    Hello Marcelo, Don’t worry, I had the same codes and symptoms before. They are due to the cold start function of the S65 engine. After I had the DME(engine control unit) tune to remove the cold start function, the engine starts with normal idle and I never see these codes again. The S65 engine has some useless features for the emission control, such as secondary air recycling and the cold start function we are talking about. These features have nothing to to with performance so some people completely remove them from the car. Who cares? The cold start function is designed to warm up the catalyzer quickly by injecting a lot of fuel so you will observe crazy asthma of the engine in the first one minute of start. Sometimes it chokes the engine so the owner gets freaked out but there is no problem in the engine at all, despite a check engine light is left on the instrument panel (and tons of codes about misfiring on 8 cylinders including 2B4E). For my observation, the cold start function will work if the car is parked for more than two days. If you drive everyday, it is less likely to take place. But anyway it is very strange and annoying, I agree. The disadvantage is that the check engine light can make one overlook other real malfunctions of the car. So I went to some tuner to disable this cold start function by writing the DME. (Search: cold start delete.) After the cold start function is disabled, the engine starts and goes into stable idle at around 800 rpm right away, no crazy fluctuation of the engine speed, as you see in 20:19 . Please look for a reliable tuner to have your DME tuned. This can completely solve the issue. Anyway I believe there’s no problem with your M3, you can also leave it as an original feature. Just be prepared to look into those codes periodically to bust real faults!

    Can ISTA help me diagnosis parasitic battery voltage drain?

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    @funcarsgoodpeople

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi idrisu1 thank you for the question. I quickly looked up in ISTA and it has the service function "Evaluate Close-circuit current monitoring" which uses the intelligent battery sensor to do the measurement. I show you the function description (in ISTA) as follows: Description In the event of problems with increased closed-circuit current, it is frequently the case that this must be determined during Service. With the conventional procedure, a shunt resistor must be fitted at the earth strap of the vehicle. Evaluating the closed-circuit current monitoring: On vehicles with an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor), the DME/DDE monitors the closed-circuit current when in the idle state. The IBS is only fitted with certain equipment options (e.g. M-ASK or CCC). The test module for evaluating of the closed-circuit current monitoring first of all tests whether an IBS is fitted at all. In this model series, the results of the last 32 cycles of closed-circuit current monitoring are stored in the DME/DDE. A new cycle of closed-circuit current monitoring is stored under the following conditions: Terminal R is off for at least 70 minutes. The vehicle is in the idle state for at least another 120 minutes without being wakened. If these conditions are met, the result of the closed-circuit current monitoring is stored in a new cycle. The oldest cycle of the 32 cycles is overwritten by the new cycle. If the vehicle is wakened after saving a cycle, a new cycle can then begin if the conditions are met. The result of a cycle of closed-circuit current monitoring has two categories: In the first category, whether or not an auxiliary consumer unit was logged in during the idle state (at least 120 minutes) is stored. An auxiliary consumer unit is a consumer unit that can also be activated in the idle state of the vehicle. In the case of closed-circuit current monitoring, a distinction can be made with regard to logged in auxiliary consumer units: - No auxiliary consumer unit was logged in - A statutory auxiliary consumer unit was logged in (e.g. light or hazard warning lights) - The independent heating was logged in - Another auxiliary consumer unit was logged in In the second category, the range of the closed-circuit current during the idle state (at least 120 minutes) is stored. In the case of closed-circuit current monitoring, a distinction can be made with regard to closed-circuit current: - 0-80 mA (normal closed-circuit current in the idle state without auxiliary consumer units) - 80-200 mA - 200-1000 mA - Over 1000 mA Increased closed-circuit current in a cycle can be seen above all when no auxiliary consumer unit was logged in, but the closed-circuit current was above 80 mA. Bear in mind that in the event of problems with the idle state of the vehicle no new cycles for closed-circuit current monitoring are stored. If the vehicle does not 'go to sleep', e.g. due to a 'sleep preventer', no new cycle of closed-circuit current monitoring is stored. Saving a new cycle of closed-circuit current monitoring is also prevented if the vehicle is permanently wakened by a control unit or a user.

    Hi Summit good morning! As far as I understand, O2 sensor after cat converter is responsible for monitoring the condition of the cat converter. I don’t think I is related to the combustion of the engine. However we faultbusters do not let go any faults 😁 The O2 sensor is usually pre-heated to work properly. It is very common that heating coil inside it has broken, leading to the readiness code. Besides, O2 sensors are not designed to be repaired so buying a new one may be necessary. As I said the O2 sensor after cat converter is not essential for the combustion so I don’t think it has the priority to be replaced. There may be other causes of your problems. @@funcarsgoodpeople not a problem it was just a heads up its used because of the heat cold cycle of the exaust it can be difficult to remove o2 sensors otherwise.

    Hello Kenrick good morning. Please reset the air-fuel mixture after replacing the O2 sensor. Too rich or too lean will make the engine stall and that's reasonable. In fact my first start after the replacement was no success because I forgot to reset. It was the second start that you see in the video 😆

    @@funcarsgoodpeople how do you reset?

  • @funcarsgoodpeople

    Hi I used BMW's service application to do the reset. I googled how to reset Mazdas and I found a lot of people disconnect the battery to reset the car. The strategy is to make all electricity dissipate so the PCM (power control unit, or ECU, engine control unit) forgets the adaptation. Step 1 Open your Mazda's hood. Step 2 Disconnect the "Negative" terminal clamp to your Mazda's battery. The negative clamp should be black and marked with a "--" symbol. The positive terminal should be red and marked with a "+" symbol. Step 3 Sit in the driver's seat of your Mazda. Step 4 Push down and release the brake pedal five times consecutively. (or turn headlights on and off, press horn to discharge the electricity.) Wait 10-15 minutes to reconnect and ECU should be reset. Step 5 Reconnect the "Negative" terminal clam on your Mazda's battery.

    I had misfire on all 8 cylinders, changed the exhaust gasket and now the misfire is only on bank 1 cylinder 1-4. it is not the coils or spark plugs. I am thinking o2 sensor maybe now but I have not got an error code for it so I am slightly confused. please let me know if you can share some wisdom!

    Hello Riyan! I think the DME is smart about the condition of an O2 sensor. If the sensor is bad, we get a fault code about it. The first thing I am guessing is the O2 sensor adaptation. Please do a reset to see if the misfire go away. Actually I did not reset the adaptation after replacing the O2 sensors. The first start was still limp mode. I did the reset like in the video, it became normal. So maybe your DME still memorizes the wrong fuel/air mixture? I am just guessing. The second thing is to let your car complete a drive cycle. When the car reaches working temperature, and some time of driving, it starts testing the exhaust system for emission control. From the text below it suggests to keep engine running for at least 18 min. I will say try to cruise on highway at fixed speed for 10-20 min. [Dynamic check of oxygen sensors before catalytic converter] This system test determines by means of lean/rich shifts in the air/fuel mixture the deviation integral for the oxygen sensors before the catalytic converter from the target Lambda value. The diagnosis result is a diagnosis value from 0 to 1 per bank. The higher the diagnosis value, the better the state of a sensor. Setpoint value: Diagnosis value greater than 0.4 If the value is less than 0.4, the vehicle must be driven: - Engine at operating temperature - 2 min at approx. 2500 rpm - - Speed greater than 60 km/h - lower part-load range - run at least one coasting phase of approx. 3 seconds Before driving, the engine has to run without interruption for 18 minutes so that the diagnosis can run. The engine must not be switched off before the journey is completed, as otherwise the 18 -minute count starts from the beginning. If no oxygen sensor fault is stored in the DME after the road test, the oxygen sensors are OK. If a fault is stored, the sensor concerned must be renewed.
