How to Clean an Oxygen Sensor

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I'll go over the basic functions of an oxygen sensor and how you can diagnose problems with it and how you can decide to see if you should try cleaning an oxygen sensor and also what you should do if there is a problem with the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor.

Thanks so much buddy. You saved me a sack of trouble. So far engine code is gone, car is more responding. All of this triggered an expensive AMF sensor, sparkplugs etc. This is one of those tricks that mechanics doesn't want you to know. Thanks again a bunch!!!!🙏🙏

I really appreciate the detailed information on this video, thanks. Speaking for myself, what usually happens is this; pull up DTC Codes, go to the net, KZread, forums, etc. to find what the probable causes are, how to diagnose, and then how to resolve. I think many of us would love a library of videos that cover just that, to begin with, the most probable cause for a DTC, then possible solutions or tips on further researching exact causes for our vehicles.

this video is golden. I'm a newbie in this kind of thing, so after a big service I take my fi motorcycle out to ride, it runs pretty well, a bit on the rich side I guess (I checked the spark plugs, a lil bit sooty). guys from the forum tell that's normal, cold engine runs a bit rich until optimum temperature. turns out it was normal cause the o2 sensor in my bike is just a single wire, no heating element so I guess it needs to be heated up by running the engine itself.

Great video. My son got Holden Commodore with V6 lfx same as a chev. We had 0172. Took to it to mechanic. He ran the code and checked fuel trims, but as the motor run very high pressure fuel, with pump running of the cam. He said he can't test fuel system (as U need special equipment) told me to take to dealer. I called two dealer got the same answer, one was $199 per hour and other was $145 per hour. But both said that have to run the codes, I said I know the code and my mechanic said to get fuel pressure test, to see if it fuel injector or pump. They both said no we don't do it the way. So I called a third dealer around 40 kms drive away and he said yes sir we can do that. So book in, sign the paper when I drop it off, with the fault. Anyway after waiting all day I call and he said, we test drove it twice and it not throwing any codes, take us home and if it throws a code bring it back. Blaming the other mechanic for clearing the code. By the way that was $154 for sweet F all. On the way home it through a code vi think 134. Holy map and he said bring it back I had to wait another week. My son been using my car for around 4 weeks now. I getting pissed off. So I take it in their wait all day, call again. We changed oxygen sensor post cat from bank one to bank 2. Now if code for bank one come up. Your computer is stuffed, but if bank 2 codes come up just O2 sensor post cat. when U bring it back to read codes, no cost, by the way another $154 please. So $308 later, I feel I been bend over. Lucky the first mechanic didn't charge me. Anyway code 0430 go off. I though I buy O2 sensor for $80 and change it. Took like 5 mins. Being Xmas and dealer being close. 2 days later code 0430 going again. Son just want get rid of the car, which I paying off. Just so piss off. Hick mechanics charging money for shit all, I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work

Just because you have a code for the O2 sensor reading lean/rich fuel condition / trims doesn't always mean the sensor is faulty, it could also be because you have a vacuum leak somewhere on the engine, causing unmetered air to enter the combustion chamber causing it to run too much air to fuel, the ECU will compensate for this using the data from the o2 sensor and add more fuel to the mixture to balance the mixture out

Quick Question, I have a 2018 honda CRV and recently its catalytic converter and downstream oxygen got stolen and I installed an aftermarket catalytic converter and OEM oxygen sensor. But once the work was done, I see that the new oxygen sensor was joined to the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic converter even though there is a space left on the new catalytic converter for the oxygen sensor, the mechanic said it's fine but was kind of worried if it was done in the right way. What would be your comments on this one? Is it okay to have a downstream oxygen sensor installed away from the catalytic converter?

Then on driving it was going into over boost, limp mode. Then on acceleration it started throwing diesel fuel and smoking. Then it threw a low voltage on the the O2 sensor. What do you think?

Hi I had a heated 02 sensor trigger cel after the battery died and my airbag light as well. Is it suggested to clean or try clearing code a few times and see if it corrects both issues?

I give my O2 sensors an Epsom salts bath every 30k miles. Then I take them out for dinner and drinks.

I have 4 O2 sensors in a 1998 Mercedes E320 base sedan. Months ago, 8 codes came up, 2 for each sensor, the sensing code & heating code. I replaced all 4 sensors with new ones. All 8 codes came back after driving for a while. I've been told that on Mercedes like this model, the catalytic converters tend to go bad, the material inside breaks up, and blows out through the exhaust. What do you think of this? Thanks.

Can a dirty Ox sensor cause my 91 3vze toyota to run too lean on closed loop? It runs smooth but there is a lot less power after warm up. The Emission test CO readings seem extreamly low.

It makes sense to me that a fouled O2 sensor would result in a lean mixture (perhaps resulting in better fuel economy, at the expense of drive-ability). But that is only my (amateur) opinion.

Question! Can you replace the connector on an O2 sensor? I purchased one for my car (it's a Bosch upstream sensor and I know it's *technically* the right part) but the connector is different. If I were to replace the connector on the new sensor with the one in the car now, would that work?

  • @45kingofkings

Technically? Either you got the wrong sensor for your specific car or you’re looking at the wrong sensor because there is two sensors that could have different connectors. Splicing wires isn’t recommended due to the sensitivity of electric flow.

How long do 02 sensors last? When you replace them or clean them do you have to delete the code or does it just dissapear?

. I have a question. About a year ago I took my 2005 Chevy Silverado 5.3 four-wheel drive truck to a mechanic to have new head gasket put in. Prior to that the truck ran great no smog problems whatsoever. When I picked the truck up from the mechanic he told me that it would run rough for a few miles but then it would be fine. Since then it never was fine. Runs really rough it gets really bad gas mileage, and a blinking check engine light when I hit the gas too hard. I bought a scanner that comes up with 4 codes. The first being the O2 sensor, the second being 4 misfires, another one is something to do with exhaust or something like that, and I can't really remember the last but it seems like it was all related to the same general issue with exhaust. I haven't taken it back to the mechanic who did the head job primarily because I take issue with a mechanic who takes no pride in his workmanship and would give a customer back a vehicle in worse condition than it had been before the head blew. Anyways just wanted to ask your opinion on the matter. I really like your videos you seem really knowledgeable where cars are concerned. I know you helped me out a lot. I'm a single woman and I don't have anybody to help me with a lot of things so I Rely on KZread videos a lot. I basically have like five different KZread master's degrees now! Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks

I have a Jeep Compass 2016 and I am getting very poor gas mileage now. I've done everything except clean or replace the oxygen sensors. I am not receiving any errors but what are your thoughts on this possibly being my issue?

This is timely. I am getting an inefficent cat code thrown. Does this sound like it could be fixed with an new o2 sensor? I got the front lower loose but cant reach to unplug it. Will trying upper front lower next to get off.

Hi sir, quick question. Mine had the code p0135. And i notided the harness is really warm after driving the car around the block. I would say 10 mins at the most.. i came back popped the hood check it and i touched the harness (plug) it was hot to touch. Not so much as the other harness. This one i touched was hot to the point where ypu can’t even hold it at all. Could you tell what could be the reason?
