NV3550 to AX15 Jeep Transmission Swap

In this episode of the LS TJ, 'Project 6.0', we swap out the nv3550 transmission to the AX15. Some may feel that this is a downgrade but it is quite the contrary as the NV3550 is no longer manufactured and parts are almost obsolete. However, the AX15 is still being manufactured and is dubbed as being underrated by many. So we decided to go with a brand new AX15 from Novak Conversions. This was a simple and easy swap and very little to be modified. We also took the liberty to upgrade to a B&M short-throw shifter while we had the opportunity. This did require slight modification due to the install of the LS engine(lq9) because it required the drive train to be moved forward about 2 inches. The full install can be seen on the channel so check out the vids! You will be very pleased with the short-throw shifter in any swapped or stock jeep. It is a HUGE difference in the shifting. Follow along as we show you guys just how simple it is!

I’ve been looking for this info for a while thank you.👍👍 I’m putting a 4.0l with dual carbs and aluminum edelbrock head in an 83 Jeep scrambler you can see on Henk brothers you tube channel and I got a mystery transmission with it from whoever started the project before me and I’m trying to figure out what it is? Looks like the bell housing fits a 3.7L V-6 Jeep ? Looks like you got over 1K subscribers congrats!
Looks awesome. Doing a NV3550 swap into my 2000 XJ from an auto. But most parts I found were for the AX-15, so this helps a whole lot with the differences between them. Looks like you have a custom transmission mount, but if you had to guess, are the mounting points from the transmission to the adapter plate in the same location on both transmissions? Asking to see if I need a new adapter plate instead of the AX-15 one I have. Thanks!

Couple of questions, I just ordered a “Terminator” trans from Rockland Standard Gear. It’s an NV3550 replacement but I’ve been told it is basically a performance AX-15. Will the same mods to the backup lights be needed? Also, will that part number B&M is shifter work on it even tho I’m putting in a 2001 Wrangler (1990-1998 is what part number says. I also have Centerforce clutch and flywheel for the NV already. Their website says the trans is for a 2000-2004 Wrangler.
I’m going to do the same swap but to factory 4.0, do you know if I need anything else besides the adapter plug. Also will that shifter work in this set up without mods?
Awesome great job!!... I was in the same boat replacing the TJ trans behind a LS 6.0 w/cam/springs....my concern was the ax15 was only rated to around 350 and the 6.0 can produce more..Any concerns? ( i opted for the TR-4050)

Don't really have any concerns as this thing will only see mostly light trails which will be perfect from what we've seen in research and other builds. Also the AX15 is underrated. The nv3550 held up pretty well. It was worn out from previous miles of use and abuse so we will see how the AX15 holds up in the future. Maybe we will do an update video of the entire build in the future! Hope the TR-4050 works out for your build! Thanks for watching!
Can you share the information you have on the short throw shifter that you were going to use for the nv3550? I’m mating a 5.3 to my nv3550 and it will save me some research.
Up to what differential can I move with the ax15 with dana 300 transfer?
Hi I have a problem with a swap of a xj 87 automatic transmission we want to put a nv3550 manual but we have a problem with crank censor since it does not match the input sensor of the xj and nv3550 that I recommend greetings from Mexico!!
How is the AX15 holding up after 18months behind the LS engine? how much power/Torque is the LS making and how are you treating it (Drive style)
Ok so I’m having issues with my swap I been told I would have to change a couple parts like pilot bearings is this correct? Because i get really close to mounting it but it just won’t go in
Would this swap work with the 3.9 v6?
So.........if one were installing the AX-15 into a later model TJ with a stock 4.0 L six the shifter would NOT need to be modified in order to avoid contact with the dash. Is that correct?

Why are you going from the nv3550 to the ax15? Are there issues with nv3550? Is the ax15 better. I’m thinking about changing the 6spd from my 2005 to either tremendo 4050or nv3550, or ax15. Looks like ax15 might be an easier swap. My only concern is the 1st gear being higher. I have a rubicon. Might not be that much of an issue

I am replacing nv 3550 with ax 15 in a 2000 TJ 4.0 as remanufacturer said they had too many problems with nv 3550.

It was to my understanding the nv3550 was a stronger transmission than the ax15. I'm a bit confused about this swap

The problem is that there is essentially no parts available for the NV3550. Transmission shops won’t touch them because there’s no good options for replacing normal wear items. The AX15 however has ton of aftermarket support, because a lot more were built. So it’s not really a case of “upgrading” transmissions but a side shift to keep the Jeep on the road.

You might have some fitment problems when you match it to the transfer case. There were a lot of variations in spline count and transfer case input shaft lengths.
Isn't the nv3550a better trans than the ax15
