Experts have proven it is safer to reverse in and later leave forward, because you already feel the traffic you are leaving from. When you just drive in and later try to leave in reverse you have blind spots that can be avoided the other way, plus you likely have no idea who is doing what behind you in your dark where you try to manouver. You arrive, check the small parking spot, lock it and go. When you leave, you cannot lock the whole transiting traffic. It is safer to prepare first, then act. Additionally, at least here, front is the main identificator. It is where the car plate is read, where the parking permit/clock is placed (front glass; driver side or center). Front must be accessible for inspection, while parked; not walled in.
