SAME!!! Behind SOAD’s self titled, probably the single most influential album to my taste when I was a kid. Used to listen to that album nonstop on my Walkman and spend every morning before school using our shitty dial up Internet to find AMVs of songs like Push It and Bled for Days. Absolutely a stone cold classic

LD 50 is so underrated in nu metal due to them having a big drop in quality after their debut. The progressive metal and mathcore influences really show on this album and is easily a top 5 nu metal album due to the strong bass play and the vocals by Gray (Severed is my favorite track on the album).

I wouldn’t necessarily consider End of All Things to Come a big drop in quality. I’d consider Mudvayne’s trajectory to be similar to Static-X’s. First album is a classic, second was also very strong but just didn’t quite match the first, and then it’s stagnation thereafter with most of their stuff geared toward catching some dwindling mainstream success. Mudvayne was a little better at this, though. Their most popular radio songs were from their worst albums imo

System of a Down's self-titled was the second heavy album I'd ever heard, with the first being Toxicity, haha. A friend of mine burned a couple of CD-R's with the albums on them. This was back when I couldn't get into Slipknot because it was too much. But over time I then started to love Slipknot's self-titled. Then I got more and more into death metal that way. This was all because my friend decided to show me SOAD one day after school. Thanks, Scott. :D

Haha nice. Same way for me but other way round. I found system harder to get into because of their crazy way outta the box style. And slipknot grabbed me straight away. Then once I grew to love toxicity I rated system over slipknot. When I would go see slipknot live in 2002 , In flames opened up for them. Then I pretty much became crazy about the Swedish metal scene ever since

Another great Tier list, and the S Tier is absolutely perfect, glad to see Wisconsin Death Trip get the praise it deserves. But you broke my heart with Sinner on the D Tier. I agree that it wasn't a powerhouse of originality, but it is a very solid record, and the final track "Sermon" is a hidden gem IMO. And I went to check and Incubus debut album was Fungus Amongus, independently released in 1995, and then re-released by the major label they were signed on a few years later (and this album actually has my favorite Incubus song "Trouble in 421"). Even with a broken heart, I still love your stuff 🤘🏽

I mostly agree with your list. Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory was amazming when it came out, but it got overplayed. Looking back I can see why I liked it. Haven't listened enough to the Static X debut to have a good opinion on it. Maybe I need to revisit that one. And for me SCIENCE is S tier. I discovered that album and I couldn't stop listening to it. That album is one of the reasons I started playing guitar. It is so diverse, clever, and very enjoyable to listen to.

It has been getting a more positive reassessment as of late. If you look at the beginnings of the genre with Korn, you see something truly innovative, and it resonated with a lot of people. What killed it was the same thing that killed glam (which also started out in a pretty solid place around the very end of the 70s). It became too popular, causing major labels to sign on a bunch of inferior bands with a similar sound. This lead to a lot of crap music getting pushed hard by MTV (what else explains the success of crap, IMO, like Crazy Town and Trapt?), and it turned people off in the end.

When Korn and Slipknot released their self titled albums that changed everything. 'Slipknot' unleashed full carnage with its raw and heavy sound. Fun fact about this album, Corey was literally using no technique at all with his screams/growls and that's why in one of the tracks at the end you hear him throwing up because he strained his throat so badly

Yeah, he sounds REALLY raw and unhinged here. In Iowa his voice solidifies into what we know today (in his heaviest moments). It became less raw and unhinged, but more brutal and driving, and of course it was important in the long run for him to learn proper technique. Otherwise he would have turned into Chris Barnes after a decade or so.

I'm 18 years old, and these four bands-Pantera, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, and Linkenpark-are the first metal bands I ever heard of. I say four because I grew up with abusive parents and I avoided loud noises as a result (don't worry, I no longer live with them). However, I can recall hearing Pantera's "Walk" and Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness" frequently. I vividly recall being scared by the graphic visuals of Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams (are made of these)" cover when I watched my first metal music video on MTV (back when they still streamed music videos every day). My aunt denies this, but I'd like to think that when I was younger, I was consistently exposed to metal music because how can one recollect something he didn't experience? I listen to some heavy music now in 2022 that I certainly couldn't have four years ago. In 2019, Killswitch Engaged lead me into a rabbit hole of metal music listening, which is how I rediscovered metal. I discovered Slipknot through Killswitch Engaged, and I listened to all of their album "All Hope is Gone," where I heard "Snuff," my all-time favorite song, as well as portions of their self-titled album (but not all because I couldn't handle the heaviness yet). additionally, some of ".5: The Gray Chapter." Four years later, I can finally tolerate the heaviness of tracks like "Agony" by Slaughter to Prevail and "Transylvanian Hunger" by Darkthrone. I'm currently just looking forward to Slipknot's upcoming new album; I'm so excited for it, it's not even funny. And that concludes my experience with metal music thus far.

I don't listen to a lot of nu metal. The only bands I listen to in the genre really are Linkin Park, Sevendust, and Deftones, so I guess my choices are probably obvious, Adrenaline, Sevendust's debut, and Hybrid Theory are going to be my picks for this ranking.

  • @worksofein6449
    @worksofein64492 жыл бұрын

Fun list! Deftones - never really got into them till white pony. Tried this album again the other day but still not digging it. Seven dust- Lejons voice is great but their best work came later IMO Static-x - this is one of my favourite all time albums and I jam it regularly. I have a project that pays homage to this album. Papa roach and POD - the pod album has some cool songs but PR didn't click for me until FEAR came out. Dope and Orgy - didn't get into dope but the Orgy album is cool and has a vibe that was 20 years ahead of it's time interms of the music if not the lyrics. Taproot and Nonepoint- I can't remember these at all. SOAD - I played this so much back in the day, but can't really dig any more. Used to play suitepea in my first band. Stained - didn't know about this album, Aaron's voice always put me off, just couldn't vibe with it. Soulfly- cool album, still influences me too this day along with roots by sepultura Disturbed - David has a great voice and when they hit their stride the songs are great, but a lot leaves me unmoved. Drowning pool - never got into them, only heard the singles but they didn't grab me enough to listen to more. Spineshank - cool album but the next album was much better Korn- such a dark album, such a weird uneasy vibe, major influence on my song writing Linkin Park - didn't get into this album until about ten years later, got into the remix album first and still jam them both regularly. Lyrics to one step are cringe though. Limp bizkit - great album, counterfeit is such a jam and who knew they would go onto be the biggest band of the time Mudvayne - really wanted to like them but aside from some singles never got away with them. Incubus - cool album but dropped off after that for me, not bad just not for me. Kittie - never actually listened to the album cos the single I heard really didn't grab me, deffo didn't deserve the flak they got. Evanescence - not heard it beyond the singles which didn't grab me Slipknot - another huge influence that I jam to this day, I think I prefer Iowa but this is still fantastic album. I love the dark gritty uneasy vibe it has. Hed p.e. - this just makes me think of middle class white English kids in my home town pretending to be LA tough guys from the streets Mushroomhead and PM5K - not heard either of these. MRH had a few singles I was into but never really had the songs to take them further, same for pm5k but their latest album is pretty cool. Solid list and was a fun bit of nostalgia. Only one I would have added would be the first American Head Charge album which is still great and totes underrated.

Yeah I agree with you (tho I havent listen much to the list) the problem with some artists/bands, it is that the musically the song is great, but the lyrics tend to be cringe and childish. That is what I had with Evanescence, and maybe that is why it atratcs more mainstream listeners than metal/rock listeners.

Some thoughts: Dope's strength was never lyrics, but I dug the industrial influences. I enjoyed the first few albums. Same with Orgy. I'm still a huge Nonpoint fan so I'm certainly biased towards them. Rabia is also my favorite Nonpoint song. I'd kill for an album by them with that level of aggression. Staind's debut is peak post-grunge. Everything afterwards is a let down. Spineshank's debut was not strong, but their sophomore album The Height of Callousness still holds up to this day. That's a hill I will die on. I'd probably move a few bands up one tier (Nonpoint, Staind, Disturbed, and Spineshank), but overall this is solid placement. I can live with this list.

I got it a month early though so I was kind of tired of it by the time it was blowing up. I would actually move up the Hed PE album. So much more diverse and experimental than anything else they've done. Love it. Only other thing I might change is dropping Papa Roach down farther. I know they have a big faith no more and funk/experimental influence, but still it just feels wrong to call Science nu metal. Certainly heavier than other things they did though. I liked them a lot at one point but looking back it’s almost like they didn’t have a clear defined sound and style and just went with whatever scene was trending at the time. Some good albums, Morning View is probably their most consistent and the sound I associate them with.

Pretty legit ranking bro, I just need to correct you on one piece of info. You've said it in this video and the KoRn ranking one as well. You had said that when the first album dropped they were all over the radio and that's DEFINITELY NOT the case. I remember when Life Is Peachy came out I remember sitting up all night watching 120 Minutes on MTV to try to record the A.D.I.D.A.S video, which I eventually did after about 2 weeks of nothing. It wasn't until Follow The Leader that KoRn blew up on the radio and TRL. Freak on a Leash was the song that did it. That and Got The Life

  • @MetalTrenches

I remember hearing Blind on the radio along with a few others nearly around the clock even as a kid. They definitely became much bigger with Freak On A Leash, but they already had a pretty strong radio rotation. Consider also that ADIDAS wouldn't get played as much given the lyrics.

Im with @social_daze on this one. Korn was definitely not being played on the radio heavily up until Follow The Leader came out. I listened to the radio (grew up in Los Angeles which always had the biggest acts) and all the music channels non-stop and Korn didn’t really break into the mainstream until Got The Life. Self-titled and Life Is Peachy gained the band underground king status but they were not full fledged mainstream.
