There were several major genres that dominated the 90s mainstream (grunge/pop punk/post-grunge/alternative metal/nu metal). I don’t think any one album can really define the decade as a whole.

Insomniac feels a lot like In Utero to me. It followed a hugely successful and popular album with many singles, that made the band a sensation yet the band chose to take a darker, more twisted turn. They didn’t repeat their breakthrough album. This is why both Insomniac and In Utero are my favorites from each discography.

Great take, I agree. Insomniac was the band deliberately trying a more edgy, sinister tone compared to Dookie. Dookie made them famous, Insomniac was their response to the artistic freedom that comes with fame. They're both amazing albums in their own way.

Interesting take. I love the album for those reasons, too, but aside from some stellar bass work, I find the music side of the album more “one-note” than its predecessor and successor. Its biggest strength lie primarily in the introspective nature of the lyrics.

I love Insomniac. It suffered the same fate as Offsprings Ixnay on the Hombre, both are great albums that followed up quickly after their best albums and almost got overlooked. Also both albums almost feel like their most, experimental is the wrong word, deliberately different maybe, but you get my drift...and funnily enough both Insomniac and Ixnay have aged the best for me.

I'm a diehard Metalhead but before I got into Metal - Green Day along with The Offspring were my gateway bands to appreciating Rock. Basket Case was on a Rock compilation I bought, and from there I had to own everything they ever put out. Amazing Pop-Punk band. Distorted electric guitar is actually something I DIDN'T hear much of growing up in the mid to late 90s - the mainstream was dominated by Electro-Pop here in the UK, and the only "Rock" that was big was the likes of Oasis and Blur. So hearing something with a hint more aggression was a real ear opener.

Maaan this band is my childhood and early teen years their music is the quintessence of nostalgia for me. I remember when I was in elementary and middle school this band was absolutely MASSIVE. Love it or hate it, American Idiot is the most popular rock album of the last 25 years and still unmatched. Now tho I do think that as a entire album experience is kinda a mixed bag because it has these super huge and anthemic songs that defined a whole generation (American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, When me up when September Ends) but it even has a lot of filler tracks and super mid songs (Extraordinary Girl, Give Me Novacaine, Homecoming ecc), tho I would like to suggest the last track Whatsername which is one of my favorite Green Day songs ever and I think it's criminally underrated.

Here would be my ranking of their albums: S - Dookie, Insomniac A - Kerplunk, Nimrod, American Idiot B - 39/Smooth, Warning, Saviors C - 21st Century Breakdown, Revolution Radio D - Uno!, Dos!, Tre! I love insomniac with every fiber of my being. It's an underrated and under appreciated gem. Id say it, 20th century breakdown, and Revolution radio sit at my S tier for ranking. I do have to go back and listen to the other albums again to remember where id put them. But id say saviors is at a solid high b, low a. I'll give American Idiot a decent low a. Only because I find it truly overrated and over played. Insomniac has some of, if not a decent amount of my overall favorite songs from the album. No pride is a banger, I enjoy brain stew despite being a bit over played. Love geek stink breath, walking Contradiction is one of my all time favorite songs from Greenday. Stuart and the avenue is a good deviation from the typical breakup song. West bound sign is solid. Tight wad hill is growing on me immensely. Armatage shanks is a great opener for the album.

The brain stew chord progression is not only the same as that Chicago song, but also Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Guna Leave you”, the Beatles “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and some Styx song… Madam Blue?

I agree with pretty much everything, except I would put Insomniac on perfection. The thing is GD were kinda of pissed off from the allegations that they "betrayed" the punk movement with the success of Dookie. Insomniac is born in response to that, so I feel like the songs not being that catchy is not a problem, for they were not trying to make catchy songs, but instead angry and powerful ones.

I kinda enjoyed myself some GD back in the days growing up during the '90s. My personal favorites would be Dookie, followed by Insomniac and Nimrod. They kinda lost me with Warning. And they lost me completely once American Idiot dropped. Haven't listened to anything since then. Except for a couple of songs here and there.

Hot take: as much as I love Dookie, I gotta say, the album is VERY top 2/3 to 3/4 heavy. I just can't get into Sassafras Roots, no matter how many times I try to listen to it, and it sucks that it's in between two absolute bangers (She and When I Come Around) and I'm too lazy to skip the song. There's some great deep cuts like Burnout, Having a Blast, Chump, and especially Pulling Teeth. I'd give the album a 9/10 personally, but I don't think it's their best album or a perfect album either. Edit: Also She is a great deep cut.

I feel like you went easy on Saviors because your expectations were so dang low lol. If you don't like the preachyness of American Idiot, well "The American Dream is killing me" is way more on those nose. Jesus of Suburbia is an excellent roller coaster of a song that has more cool variety than most whole albums do (not to mention the harmonies and song writing is great). Give me Novicaine is a straight BANGER, and wake me up when september ends always hits me hard because he sings about his father dying, so I remember listening to this song as a kid and being grateful that my father is still around.American Idiot and She's a Rebel are just bangers too.

"oh no!.......My pre-metal youth". I've never understood why rock/heavy shit fans become tribal and limit themselves to their chosen genre or sub-genre. My fave bands back in the day, VH, Metallica, U2, Ramones, QOTSA, Nirvana, Ministry etc etc: ALL had a very wide range of tastes. People always were amazed by music collection because of how I looked and how hard and/or heavy tracks were on our albums. When I see metalheads who ignore everything not what they consider 'real music', I always ask them what their fave food is and ask them if that's _the only_ food they eat.
