There were several major genres that dominated the 90s mainstream (grunge/pop punk/post-grunge/alternative metal/nu metal). I don’t think any one album can really define the decade as a whole.

Insomniac feels a lot like In Utero to me. It followed a hugely successful and popular album with many singles, that made the band a sensation yet the band chose to take a darker, more twisted turn. They didn’t repeat their breakthrough album. This is why both Insomniac and In Utero are my favorites from each discography.

Great take, I agree. Insomniac was the band deliberately trying a more edgy, sinister tone compared to Dookie. Dookie made them famous, Insomniac was their response to the artistic freedom that comes with fame. They're both amazing albums in their own way.

Interesting take. I love the album for those reasons, too, but aside from some stellar bass work, I find the music side of the album more “one-note” than its predecessor and successor. Its biggest strength lie primarily in the introspective nature of the lyrics.

I love Insomniac. It suffered the same fate as Offsprings Ixnay on the Hombre, both are great albums that followed up quickly after their best albums and almost got overlooked. Also both albums almost feel like their most, experimental is the wrong word, deliberately different maybe, but you get my drift...and funnily enough both Insomniac and Ixnay have aged the best for me.

I'm a diehard Metalhead but before I got into Metal - Green Day along with The Offspring were my gateway bands to appreciating Rock. Basket Case was on a Rock compilation I bought, and from there I had to own everything they ever put out. Amazing Pop-Punk band. Distorted electric guitar is actually something I DIDN'T hear much of growing up in the mid to late 90s - the mainstream was dominated by Electro-Pop here in the UK, and the only "Rock" that was big was the likes of Oasis and Blur. So hearing something with a hint more aggression was a real ear opener.

Death metal kid here, but was just hitting 16 when Dookie dropped (hahahah) and it was a fantastic time to be a music fan. That album was what got me into punk (outside of things like Misfits/Ramones/70's Euro punk.) To think day Pulling Teeth is one of my absolute favorite songs.

Dookie is perfection. My older sister had it on tape and my parents got so tired of hearing her complain about me stealing it, they bought me my own. The tape was brown. Wish I still had it. Nimrod is excellent. Glad someone said it.
Dude! Really cool of you to create a tier list for Green Day. They were definitely my introduction to rock music as well, and I was a huge fan of theirs before getting into metal.
Construct is for me is what Damage Done was for you. Construct was one of the first melodeath albuns I've ever listened to and I adore it to this day, for me every song is incredible. Sending some love for this album because it's often one of the least liked by people. Great video!!

Maaan this band is my childhood and early teen years their music is the quintessence of nostalgia for me. I remember when I was in elementary and middle school this band was absolutely MASSIVE. Love it or hate it, American Idiot is the most popular rock album of the last 25 years and still unmatched. Now tho I do think that as a entire album experience is kinda a mixed bag because it has these super huge and anthemic songs that defined a whole generation (American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, When me up when September Ends) but it even has a lot of filler tracks and super mid songs (Extraordinary Girl, Give Me Novacaine, Homecoming ecc), tho I would like to suggest the last track Whatsername which is one of my favorite Green Day songs ever and I think it's criminally underrated.

I gave the new Green Day album a listen this morning and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not their best album but I do think it’s their best since American Idiot. Though to me nothing beats Dookie and Insomniac as Green Day’s best. Here would be my ranking of their albums: S - Dookie, Insomniac A - Kerplunk, Nimrod, American Idiot B - 39/Smooth, Warning, Saviors C - 21st Century Breakdown, Revolution Radio D - Uno!, Dos!, Tre! F - Father of All Motherfuckers
I wasn't expecting this tier list. Green Day are my favorite band, are from my hometown (also hometown of Possessed), and I went to high school with Billie Joe's nephew. I really enjoyed the new album and it's one of my favorite things I've heard this month. My favorite album by them fluctuates back and forth between Nimrod and Insomniac. Here's how I would tier out their discography (no ranking within tiers). Perfection: Nimrod, Insomniac, Dookie, American Idiot Great: Warning, Kerplunk, 21st Century Breakdown, 39/Smooth Good: Saviors, Revolution Radio, Uno, Dos, Tre Meh: Bad: Father of All...

Every album is a banger, except for their first one witch is really boring, it killed me for puting kerplunk, saviors and the triollogy so low, i love those albums, but, it is what it is, insomniac is awesome, i love how raw and angry it is, rev rad was an album that i didnt really cared about for a long time, but now i know what a great record it is, Yes i LOVE FOAM, i dont care what people say, its fun, Nimrod its one of their most experimental records, i love that, Dookie its an instant classic when you listen to those lyrics and riffs, warning its their most underrated work, american idiot and the beast that it is, 21st century breakdown the most relatable one in my opinon, BANGER!
We may have some different tastes (your "good" tier being my two favorite albums) but I respect the review!!
Dookie is a pop punk classic. Longview has a killer bassline. Heard dude was tripping acid when he came up with it lol.
I put their new album with Dookie. I love it
Growing up in the Bay Area when dookie dropped 😉 you could feel the effect immediately, the nirvana of Gilman street. I was a staunch metalhead from the get go, but dookie was such a great uniter between the communities. Even more so for me with me and insomniac. Geek stink breath is a criminally underrated single, and it was always a treat to hear the brain stew/jaded hybrid on the radio (often jaded wasn’t included so I’d wait in anticipation.) My generations heartbreaker/ living living maid 😂

Insomniacs my favorite album
I’ve had good times with dookie, I agree it’s a 10/10 That’s where my love for them ends though 😅
Yknow, 90's Green Day would totally release a cough into a microphone as a single and it wouldve made it onto International Superhits and would be remembered as a classic and it would be in the soundtrack to a 90s throwback movie
I've been hearing a single look ma no brains in a taco bell commercial lol.
I loved Dookie and Nimrod, and after that I liked the odd song here and there like"Brainstew," "Blood, Sex and Booze" "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Holiday." I do have many fond memories of Nimrod and Dookie though. Nimrod was the first CD I purchased with my own money at the age of 10, and Dookie is an album I would throw on a lot in my adult years while playing with my son becaue it was fun, and didn't have "scary cookie monster vocals."
i actually completely agree with this list except i slighly prefer 1039 to kerplunk
I got into them just before Warning came out (Warning tour they played for 3.5 hours which was impressive). When American Idiot came out, I had moved on a bit but I liked it a lot at first until everything was quickly overplayed. It was also too produced. 21st Century I didn't like at first, but it grew on me a lot (still too produced). I liked a few songs off RevRa but other than that I haven't liked anything since 2009. Nimrod was my first record and still a top 10 album for me and wish they would do an album like that again. 1) Nimrod 2) Dookie 3) 21st Century 4) Insomniac 5) American Idiot 6) Warning 7) Kerplunk 8) Revolution 9) 39/Smooth 10) Tre 11) Uno 12) Father of All 13) Dos Guess I'll go give Saviors a listen
Insomniac is my favorite album. Some nice cuts on there.
Love Green day.
Strongly disagree with your ranking of Warning. I love waiting, but the best tracks on that album aren’t the singles. Blood, sex, and booze, deadbeat holiday, church on Sunday, Macy’s day parade, it’s my favourite green day album by far. A lot of range and creativity, less same old same old. To each their own I guess
I’ll take first 7 inch “1000 hours”.
I didnt appreciate all of Dookie until much, much later in fife. I had a friend in 2006 who gave me American Idiot, Insomniac, and Nimrod and so i grew to love those first. Nimrod is still my favorite
I liked Saviors a lot
I’m that weirdo that ranks 1039 Smoothed out slappy hours as Green Days best album followed by Kerplunk and then Dookie. They kind of lost me after Insomniac. I think 1039 is my favourite as it came out when I was a young teenager (yeah I’m old as fuck) so has massive sentimental value and memories attached.
American Idiot is a 2000s masterpiece like Tommy or The Wall every songs is imediate yet fits the rock opera
I love insomniac with every fiber of my being. It's an underrated and under appreciated gem. Id say it, 20th century breakdown, and Revolution radio sit at my S tier for ranking. I do have to go back and listen to the other albums again to remember where id put them. But id say saviors is at a solid high b, low a. I'll give American Idiot a decent low a. Only because I find it truly overrated and over played. Insomniac has some of, if not a decent amount of my overall favorite songs from the album. No pride is a banger, I enjoy brain stew despite being a bit over played. Love geek stink breath, walking Contradiction is one of my all time favorite songs from Greenday. Stuart and the avenue is a good deviation from the typical breakup song. West bound sign is solid. Tight wad hill is growing on me immensely. Armatage shanks is a great opener for the album.
Isn’t it “Bab’s Uvula Who?” ? Also good ranking!

I agree with pretty much everything, except I would put Insomniac on perfection. The thing is GD were kinda of pissed off from the allegations that they "betrayed" the punk movement with the success of Dookie. Insomniac is born in response to that, so I feel like the songs not being that catchy is not a problem, for they were not trying to make catchy songs, but instead angry and powerful ones.

I kinda enjoyed myself some GD back in the days growing up during the '90s. My personal favorites would be Dookie, followed by Insomniac and Nimrod. They kinda lost me with Warning. And they lost me completely once American Idiot dropped. Haven't listened to anything since then. Except for a couple of songs here and there.
Do one for Bad Religion (that is, if you listen to them, their discography is kinda huge)
Hot take: as much as I love Dookie, I gotta say, the album is VERY top 2/3 to 3/4 heavy. I just can't get into Sassafras Roots, no matter how many times I try to listen to it, and it sucks that it's in between two absolute bangers (She and When I Come Around) and I'm too lazy to skip the song. There's some great deep cuts like Burnout, Having a Blast, Chump, and especially Pulling Teeth. I'd give the album a 9/10 personally, but I don't think it's their best album or a perfect album either. Edit: Also She is a great deep cut.

I feel like you went easy on Saviors because your expectations were so dang low lol. If you don't like the preachyness of American Idiot, well "The American Dream is killing me" is way more on those nose. Jesus of Suburbia is an excellent roller coaster of a song that has more cool variety than most whole albums do (not to mention the harmonies and song writing is great). Give me Novicaine is a straight BANGER, and wake me up when september ends always hits me hard because he sings about his father dying, so I remember listening to this song as a kid and being grateful that my father is still around.American Idiot and She's a Rebel are just bangers too.
"oh no!.......My pre-metal youth". I've never understood why rock/heavy shit fans become tribal and limit themselves to their chosen genre or sub-genre. My fave bands back in the day, VH, Metallica, U2, Ramones, QOTSA, Nirvana, Ministry etc etc: ALL had a very wide range of tastes. People always were amazed by music collection because of how I looked and how hard and/or heavy tracks were on our albums. When I see metalheads who ignore everything not what they consider 'real music', I always ask them what their fave food is and ask them if that's _the only_ food they eat.

Green Day is to music what Olestra is to chips. They tried it in the '90s, found out it caused people to shit like crazy and now it's just a bad memory.
