I think the only band that truly deserves to be in the "pure cringe" tier is blood on the dance floor. And yes, mostly due to the frontman being a bag of human excrement hidden behind pretty makeup. I love bands that put in some effort into their appearance, whether it's crazy costumes or strong makeup or ridiculous stage shows cause it's a bit of extra on top of the great music, especially since it adds an extra visual dimension, it's like that cherry on the top, a dose of eye candy for the dessert after the musical main course but... you get to blood on the dancefloor and the meal they're serving is kinda shitty and the ingredients are rotten. So yeah, I don't think HIM and Otep should be on the same tier. Skillet I dunno, never really listened to them :D

Love these lists, man. Also love your comments on politically-themed metal: it better be done as an art and not pandering. I have very strong political views, but I DO NOT NEED my music to reflect that. It sucks when people just want their music to pander to their beliefs. I'm not saying I am an ethereal being who has ascended to a level beyond: I'm saying I hate that a lot of badly-themed music is coming out because people who need their politics constantly massaged in every aspect of their life will eat it up. Demand better! Oh and fun fact: my wife knew Brandon from Bleeding Through and said he was a massive tool.

I wouldn’t say Baby Metal are cringe. I see why they can be labeled as such, but they’re just industry plants. Those girls have been through absolute hell being used up by the Japanese “idol” scene that rely on abuse, neglect and near-torturous methods to get their albums on the global scale. Same reason why I don’t find BTS music cringe, but rather depressing on how big they are, and how many people enjoy that. And as soon as I saw Pantera on this list, I had to pull out the 🍿! I think Cradle of Filth end up being less cringe than you'd expect because they take themselves about as seriously as an episode of Blackadder...if they were really really earnest and deadly serious, they'd be waaaaay worse. But Dani is generally just taking the piss most of the time. Interesting that you have an issue with Disturbed's version of Sound Of Silence, since Paul Simon himself praised them for their performance of it. I really like that version (and I love the original) because for me it does capture and express the quiet anger in the lyrics.

Way back when I was 11, before the internet I went into a local record store to pick up an album from a band I saw on Headbamger's Ball. I didn't remember the name of the band correctly because I bought Ministry's The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste. On the car ride home I expected to hear some generic thrash metal and on comes Thieves instead. That was quite a shock, but one I subjected myself to over and over in the coming weeks. Yeah and I actually do enjoy almost everything by Mudvayne, but damn, LD50 was so much better than everything after it. They dropped the silly face paint which was good, but then they decided to play radio metal, which I like but if they'd stuck with the LD50 thing they'd probably be lauded as one of the greats instead of a festival band. Aww man...yeah Bad Wolves suck but as someone who heard Zombie all throughout high school watching the video knowing what happened to Dolores and the way they shot the video legit made me mist up. No it's not the best cover, I really hate they replaced the year with 2018 and bombs with drones but I guess it was inevitable, but Dolores signed off on it and was supposed to be in the video and I think on the track as well.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Disturbed "The Sound of Silence". I have long enjoyed the Simon and Garfunkel original, and when I heard Disturbed's version, I was impressed. What was a quiet and minimal song was now a heavy song that seemed to grow as it progressed, becoming a song to the masses. I don't think it affects the original in any negative way, and even Paul Simon himself regards the song as an excellent cover of the original. Is it as good? Debatable. Is it good in its own right? Yes. Actually I've thought Disturbed has a knack for turning pop standards into metal songs and doing it well (see Shout and Land of Confusion). But in the end, we have our opinions and if we disagree, we should do it in a civilized manner. Thank you.

I was thinking about being like 11 and LOVING two songs from Blood on the Dancefloor (Death to your Heart and I think the Wonderland one???). I couldn't figure out what the band was called for good reasons, but it's so bad lmaoo. I have a core memory of them joking about their music being inspired by the sound of a dying cat?? Where's my Wonderland still is decent but the lyrical writing is SO lazy. It took looking up "cringy scene bands" to find them though, so I can now rest in peace.

They’ve just gotten more and more cringe with each release. It’s really bad now and I have no regrets for not listening to them any in the last 15 years.

Since people started calling everything "cringe" as a copout so they don't actually have to provide valid criticisms. I'm mostly kidding. we shouldn't take things too seriously. But on the other side of the coin, it's kind of unfair to hold works from the past to the standards of today for the sake of mockery. I'd challenge deicide and kiss being on the list personally. Yeah, Satanism is played out in 2022, but it wasn't when we were just coming out of the satanic panic Reagan era when deicide hit the scene. As for kiss, of course they're corny now, but again when they hit the mainstream they pushed boundaries and paved the way for a million bands with successful careers today. It's all totally subjective at the end of the day I suppose, some bands broke new ground and others were parts of passing phases in music. but it is slightly annoying that "cringe" and "edgy" seem to be the main buzzwords people hurl to smugly dismiss anything (like bands, subcultures, or entire genres) they don't understand or aren't into these days as if they're just too cool for school. I agree with most of the list though, lots of those bands induce second-hand embarrassment when I hear or see them

    • Ministry: No opinion really. I didn't even know they made metal music but to be fair, I only discovered them as recently back in 2010 and it was only their Industrial/EBM type music that I was listening to, never really ventured into their 2000s stuff. • Cradle of Filtth: They're is a fun one. I think the stuff has aged a bit and can be seen as "cringe" but they had some of the nicest shot music videos and their instrumentals (mainly when they incorporated orchestral stuff in it) are so nice. I remember I hated Dani's singing style but loved the way the instruments sounded and the operatic vocals provided Sarah Jezebel Deva. And I did eventually warm up to Dani's vocals lol. • Godsmack: Agreed. Admittedly they are nostalgic for me because I listened to their singles released at the time when I was in middle school and first two years of high school. But whenever I go back to their songs, I do cringe at the lyrics because they're just so edgy and I can't relate with them, especially their song "Whatever" which used to be one of my favorities when I was 13 haha. I agree with the "cringe but fun" moniker for them for sure. • Mudvayne: Agreed, they're definitely a product of the time and didn't age the best. I still enjoy their hit singles "Happy?" and "Forget to remember" but ultimately the stuff is pretty cringe and not easy to go back to unless you're in the right nostalgic mood for it. • Otep: Split. I think a lot of their early work pre-Smash the Control Machine is pretty good. Some of the lyrics are edgy but the sound was interesting (mainly on 2004's House of Secrets) and it's hard because they're one of the first female fronted metal bands that I got into (Kittie being the first). But yeah, my brother who was also a fan sent me some of their recent music back in the 2010s and what I saw/heard was pretty cringe imo. I respect your opinion though,. I don't care for the later branch of their work at all. • Nightwish: I LOVE them. But only the era with Tarja Turunen. I never could get behind Anette Olzon after being spoiled by Tarja's opera-style singing. And plus the lyrics during Anette's time definitely skewed more on the edgy side than poetic spectrum during Tarja's era. Floor is good but Tarja still gets it for me but for the sake of the tier, I think your ranking was more than fair even though I would put them in "Cringe but fun" because even with Tarja, I'm sure there are people who would find her stage presentation cringe (and I'd disagree but to each their own lol). • HIM: I actually do enjoy their early stuff pre Dark-Light. I did get annoyed when people would call them "modern goth rock" when that isn't the genre they play, they were like the male equivalent of Evanescence, Darker style Hard Rock. That said, Vile Valo has a pretty voice and I listened to "DarkLight" on repeat back when I was 14. I'm not sure if I'd put them in the "Pure Cringe" but that's just me haha. • Coal Chamber: I only ever heard their first album and never ventured into their other stuff but yeah if we're talking about the first album, it is cringe lol. Listened to it a bunch as a 15 year old but the stuff has aged and it's hard to listen to today even if I like the instrumentals for "Sway" lol. • KISS: Haven't heard a lot of their stuff except for their well-known stuff. No real opinion. • Bad Wolves: I actually have not heard of them until you mentioned their cover of "Zombie" and oh my gosh, so that's the band who did that awful cover. This cover would play on the daily at my job and I thought it sounded like absolute crap compared to the beautiful original. Now I know who the band is and I agree. Awful awful though to be fair, the original song is hard to top, Dolores' voice and the way the instruments were arranged was near perfection. • Skillet: No real opinion, never listened to them but I remember I'd get recommended them a lot back in the day. The thing you said about the whole Imagine Dragons formula that many "butt rock" bands have been going with though, hard agree. It's the main reason why I had such difficulty getting into a lot of newer rock bands during the 2010s and many of them were doing that auto-tune like effect to the vocals and electronic-ness(?) to the chorus parts of songs which just ruined it for me personally. • Delcide, Bleeding Through, I Prevail, Sumo Cyco:, and King810, No opinion, never heard lol.I was never really into Death Metal and Metalcore. • Pantera: Only heard their songs "Cowboys from Hell"and "Walk". Very surface level view but that one song you featured, No, just no. • Baby Metal: Never could get into them, the instrumentals are fine but the high-pitched singing is just too annoying. I'll give them this, it's original at least (I haven't heard a combination like that before so forgive my potential ignorance) even if it was obviously superficially crafted.
