Now we've arrived, this is what we came for... Papatowai DOC Camp | Catlins

Papatowai was one of our favourite spots to hit in the South Island. Beautiful Camp ground with lovely sites and close to a lot of great places for exploring. Including Mc lean falls Cathedral caves, and a little remote beach we got exclusive access to, thanks to a friendly farmer we talked to.
If your into diving and Paua, we found a great spot for that, but don't tell to many people, so if we get back there next summer there is still plenty there...

Koropuku Falls trail was actually built by two local men who wanted to show off one of the area's 'forgotten falls', which explains the hand-made nature of it and lack of Doc signage. Google "Labours recover 'lost' waterfall" for an article.

Some stunning spots. Loved the waterfalls, and the rocks at 9:36 I wonder if they are formed like that because of earthquakes? Super cool ❤ What a nice fella to give you some blue cod. Yum!

Laughing at your description of the Cathedral Caves car park being full. We were there at the start of January 23 and were queuing to get in and get a space. So jealous of your being able to travel out of season with no crowds. We also visited Dunedin and would recommend the Mosgiel A & P. We met a fellow traveller at Balclutha dump station who recommended it over the Dunedin MCA which can suffer from noisy locals. It is not as close to Dunedin but more peaceful and scenic.

Hey again, can't beat off peak travel, so nice avoiding the crowds, not sure what our Christmas plans will be, but it's gonna be busy... We were on a mad rush to get down to the Catlins before summer really ended, we were so stoked to have really good weather down there... We also heard good things about the Mosgiel show grounds, heard recently that the prices have gone way up though.

Thanks Mike. Did you know that Dr. Alistair McLean in Rotorua is a descendant of the McLean Falls family.? Also.. there is an old mill site nearby, old homes/shacks and train tracks where they hauled out the logs. This video also is a very good example of the way the earthquakes formed NZ. You get to see, in the flat rock, how the crust was broken and one edge gets thrust up into the sky like a book opening, which is why the rocks are sloping upward but still with apparent layers from how they lay before the earthquake. I was taught in school down there (at Gore) that this is also the case for the Southern Alps which run the length of the South Island. Glad that you're loving it

Hey Barry good to hear from you... I've actually never heard of Alistair Mclean, whoops... But it was actually one of the Mc leans whose land we went on to that beach. Those rocks were pretty special aye, I don't know a whole lot about them, but incredible how the earth has moved with these straight flat lined rocks on massive angels.

18:03 I went to the Cathedral Caves some years ago and the person collecting the track maintenance ticket (across private land to the caves) asked where I was from. When I said Auckland she said " that'll be double price for you then". It was all in jest but left a sour note with me thinking is this what the rest of NZ think of Aucklanders?

Your son is showing some signs of neurdiversity. But if he's doing well with schooling, socially and emotionally then ignore me. But may show as he gets older. Just telling you this as knowledge is key, take what's relevant n ignore what isn't 🙂❤️ If anyone in family on either side is a lefty, bipolar, ADHD, autistic etc it can repeat down line in anyway. We nearly have all the above between hubby n I 🤦🤷. Eldest is ADHD n youngest is autistic, so we hit the jackpot on that right 😜🤣
