Parody works best when the writer actually understands what they're making fun of and WHY it's funny. Just making a reference to it in a movie NOT parody. The movie "Airplane" works because it's based on all those "Airport" movies that came out shortly before it. The audience and the writer already have the shared experience of having seen those movies and know how they're "supposed" to play out. Humor works when it subverts our expectations. Having Peter Graves and Leslie Nielson in "Airplane" was hilarious casting because up to that point, they traditionally played straight, non-comedic characters. You don't EXPECT Peter Graves to ask little Billy/Timmy (whatever) if he's ever been in a Turkish prison or if he's ever seen a grown man naked. If you cast Jim Carrey in a parody movie, it's not funny because you EXPECT him to be funny.

Also, you do realize that _Epic Movie_ is plagiarism, not parody, because it has the *same* scenes *and* jokes from movies they're "satirizing" with *very little* changes in them - not to mention that it *also* has references?

I loved Galaxy Quest! It wasn't as big as Space Balls because I think more people were into Star Wars than Star Trek at the time or something.

I can't believe Galaxy Quest wasn't brought up. One of the best in the genre.

When I saw the title "is parody dead," I just said "TFS" and moved on. Then I came back.

What I like about this channel is that most of these Nostalgia Critic reviews I have never seen

Cabin in the Woods was an excellent spoof movie to me. The things Nostalgia Critic is describing makes a good satire were are present in it, an understanding of the genre especially. it's one of my favorite movies for its cleverness and obvious appreciation for the source material.

For me, airplane (a.k.a Flying High) and Spaceballs are the only two good comedy spoof films ever. The naked gun and young Frankenstein is good aswell.

Scary movie 5 is sooooo over the top. You can't go two minutes in that movie without something weird.

I like Meet The Spartans when it's just taking-the-piss out of 300.

I love it. I saw Walk The Line not too much before it and it was such a surprisingly funny spoof.

Giving a nod to Badman at the end was definitely cool.

The timing is perfect. I was just wondering today why there haven't been any good parody movies in the last 2 decades.

God dang. I had to sit down and think about the explosion of genius that just got told to me after he signed out.

As much as I love all the old spoof movies, I only like a select few of the modern era from 1996 to present: High School High, Wrongfully Accused, Scary Movie 1-4, Not Another Teen Movie, and Date Movie.

Spaceballs is my favorate parody movie.

I laughed a couple times when my brother made me watch Meet the Spartans with him. Should I quit my job and go into the wilderness until I find myself? or am I going to be okay?

I think MtS was the first of the terrible spoof movies I really... well not hated, but disliked. I kind of like Epic movie, or Scary Movie 1-3, or even Date Movie (sometimes) but that one was just... so unfocused and so.. gosh... So, yeah, maybe try to find yourself. And maybe I should, too.

I think people don't think of the classics when mentioning parodies because they parody in a way where they parody just enough to still be their own movie.

Let's not forget Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright...true,their movies are more tribute than straightforward parody...but I haven't seen any better spoofs of zombie movies or high-intensity-buddy-cop-action flicks.

Good musical parody also hasn't died. Obviously Weird Al is still going, and Lonely Island are really popular, but The Axis of Awesome are also very funny. How to Write a Love Song has such a handle on that genre that it's almost scary, while 4 Chords is just a massive statement about music (though How to Write a Love Song is funnier in my view, 4 Chords just makes your jaw drop at how many songs are on the list).

Surprised this was a video about parodies without mentioning Austin Powers. Definitely one of the best parodies in my opinion.

I liked Naked Gun, I loved Airplane and Robin Hood Men in Tights, and even liked Airplane 2... and yet I do not, and have never been able to like Spaceballs. The movie is just... really fucking stupid and dumb... and not even in an entertaining way. I really don't get it. It has it's moments, but it is the truest example of moments that are few and far between.

Hey here's a not very well known fact: Airplane was not in fact a spoof of Airport as everyone thought but actually a spoof of the 1957 movie "Zero Hour."

Am I the only person who didn't hate meet the spartans? Maybe I only liked it because I was young?

"Meet The Spartans" is a lump of coal in a pile of shit. so no you're not the only person.

I think there was a key angle that Doug missed; the boundary of what is acceptable keeps moving. So much of the humor in successful spoofs came from flirting with what can't be done... but the Scary Movie-era of spoofs really don't have much of a line they won't cross.

There is a difference between Monet and a house painter.

It does because the ones on the League of Super Critics are shortend while Leasuresuitrantfiends are full length.

Monty Mythons. Don't ever forget Monty Pythons, folks. It's like one big hilarious parody. It's comedic gold.

One of my favorite spoof movies that I feel is very underrated is Top Secret. That movie was hilarious!

I notice no one talks about Loaded Weapon, that Lethal Weapon spoof that was as good as Airplane, Spaceballs, Naked Gun and Scary Movie.

+timrob12 You are allowed to enjoy whatever you want. But really, those movies suck. Try watching one of them now that the jokes and references have all grown stale.

Kinda sad that he didn't mentioned the abridged series genre in the internet parody bit, but eh they're not that popular and you usually need to have seen the source show beforehand to really get the jokes. Still some of the best parody work I've seen online.

There are 3 very funny German parody movies made by Michael Herbig: Der Schuh des Manitu (Karl-May parody) Traumschiff Surprise (parody a bunch of movies but mostly Star Trek and Star Wars) Lissi und der wilde Kaiser (parody of Sissi) the first two belong to the highest-grossing German films since WW2

Airplane! was a spoof of Zero Hour, not Airport. It was also the first feature-length direct parody in the film industry. Airplane II: The Sequel was more of a spoof of Airport. The sequel was not a Zucker brothers film.

You should do a review of the spoof fatal instinct made back in the 90s. It mainly makes fun of basic instinct and fatal attraction.

To be fair, Scary Movie was always basically a parody of Scream. It was a first, and they were trying hard to make it work. It did spoof alright. But the later ones just tried to do everything, which is why they all started to suck.

Do you ever see Mitt Romney Style? That is a classic of College Humor.

Parody is also still alive on TV. Just watch an episode of "MAD".

Meet the Spartans had absolutely nothing to do with parodying Meet the Parents. It strictly parodied 300 as a main plot. Nowhere in that movie was Meet the Parents centered on, or even parodied at all to my knowledge. I'm beginning to wonder if N.Critic does any actual research or simply gives opinions on what he thinks is true.....cause i've seen alot of mistakes in these videos.

This is the end is meant to be a great spoof too.

1993's "Fatal Instinct" was Damn funny. If your under like 26 you'd have to watch alot of movies to find this funny. But for what it spoofed it was hilarious. It was a spoof of "Basic Instinc, Fatal Attraction, Cape Fear, and Sleeping With The Enemy. " If you have watched any of those movies, try to find "Fatal Instinct", its really worth it. Im mad it wasn't mentioned anywhere on here though.

You know, it's pretty damn hard to cover absolutely everything in a single video. Of course Doug is going to exclude some things, but he's not doing it on purpose. I don't think Doug mentioned CollegeHumor over Team Four Star deliberately, I think he just used CH as an example, not a preference. Just because he doesn't mention TFS doesn't mean he doesn't like them. Doug is a busy person, it shouldn't come as a surprise if he forgets certain things.

I think the only reason those movies keep making money is because they're made super cheap and strategically released on weeks where there's little to no competition.

Don't be a Menace is also a good one too.

One thing: Airplane parodied Zero Hour, not Airport. Not the Zero Hour, Zero Hour. It's a common misconception.

Other great parodies: Austin Powers, conkers bad fur day, the simpsons, hot fuzz, Shaun of the dead

Actually the wayans "don't be a menace" was the first "modern" spoof movie and used the same formula as today's spoof but waaaaaaayyy more clever and funny

My classic parody films that are so funny and makes it memorable like: 1. Hot Shots, Part Deux 2. The Naked Gun Trilogy 3. Don't Be a Menace.....in South Central (MESSAGE!) These parody movies are dead, but parodies grow on Robot Chicken, Mad, and so on.

This is why I love KZread more than television. TV can die.

Community series work well for reference-based humour as well.

tucker and dale vs evil i thought did a great job at parody :) it was hilarious and the characters were really memorable :)

I liked Scary Movies 3 and 4, they actually seemed to be going back towards the old formula, but other than those I'd have to say I agree with Doug. They get a lot of flack, and yes there are parts where they go too far in certain scenes, but overall they're still pretty funny movies that manage to avoid the excess a lot of other parody movies have done. I haven't seen SM5, so I don't know how it will be. Another good parody is An American Carol, I'd recommend checking it out.

An argument could be made that Tarantino is keeping satire alive, true his last 5 films aren't necessarily spoof's as much as homages/satires of exploitation genres, same could be said of anything Broken Lizard makes.

i didn't mind the first scary movie cause i am a big fan of the scream franchise and i know what you did last summer. loved them when i was growing up and i found the first scary movie pretty funny

The first one was hilarious due to all it did and how well they did it. They tried to make the plot differently, showing what could have happened and the motives, to the point it made you think on motives. But epic movie and the rest were just joke after joke making fun of many movies rather than just one good sequence telling you a good story.
