No Power Supply Cable For Your Graphics Card? No Problem!

Ойындар

I try out a special cable to fix an issue with my desktop that doesn't have a graphics card power cable to begin with.
New link (as of 1/24/2021) to adapter (6 or 8 pin):
www.ebay.com/itm/173610565849
The link usually goes dead so if it does let me know and I'll try to update it. You can also search "sata male to 8pin" on ebay and usually find it with relative ease. You may notice the cable in the link is a dual sata to 6 or 8 pin. I've started only recommending this because it lets your gpu draw power from two sata cables which is safer. However I wouldn't say this is the best method or the safest, so try at your own risk.

I've seen a few pc's have the sata connector and/or cable melt. Just depends on how many watts you are pulling from your gpu. The dual sata to 6 pin is safer only when you you use 2 sata connectors on different wires (not 2 right next to each other on the same wires) but with hp's and dell's, they would be on the same wires. Regardless they only melt on rare occasions but is always a possibility.

A SATA connection is only rated for 54 watts. Using *3* of them would be safe to power a *150 watt* PCI-E 8-pin power connector, or 2 to power a *75 watt* PCI-E 6 pin connector. 2 to an 8-pin IS NOT SAFE. That's over and above the "separate power wiring" issue, as too many power supplies use too thin of wire to feed SATA connectors for higher-power usage.

8 pin pcie express draws 150 watts. 6 pin pcie express draws 75 watts. Sata draws 54 watts maximum. So powering an 8 pin pcie with a single sata connector means your video card is either drawing 96 watts too much or your video card isn't getting enough. Even if you use 2 sata connectors for 108 watts to an 8 pin pcie connector, it still overdraws by 42 watts or has an underdraw of 42 watts. Mainly meaning there is a good chance of the sata power wires melting and starting a fire. At best, 2 sata connectors to a 6 pin 75 watt sata connector would be acceptable but sata was never designed to power pcie video cards.

I have an old HP 8000 and faced the same dilemma. nearly went down this route, had upgraded the ram to it's max of 16 gig and upgraded the processor from core 2 duo to core 2 quad. The graphics card was the trickiest, because of the power thing, so tried the gtx 1050 TI but it didn't work (Found out the 10 series cards only support UEFI Bios) so i tried a gtx 750 TI, and it worked fine.. probably twice as fast now.. Not for playing latest AAA games, but then I'm not much of a gamer anyhow. I think the 'TI' was the answer as they all take their power from the PC1e slot but need less power than the same card without a 'TI' suffix..

I don't think the problem is HP dude, the problem is that your pc is nearing archaic. I had the same problem trying to upgrade my friend's PC for him. I bought him a new mid level GPU for christmas, then I realized, ok he needs a new motherboard to run it. So I bought him the motherboard. Then we realized that now his CPU and his power supply were both too old to work with any new motherboards, so he had to get a new CPU and power. There is a limit to how older/newer pc parts can cooperate with each other and if you want to upgrade a really old pc, it's more like building a new one inside the shell of your old one!

Yeah, I hate HP and their proprietary shenanigans. I got rid of my i7-3770 HP 8300 Elite because of the stupid power supply that can't be replaced. That was a god sent, because I have built three of my own custom PCs and had a blast!

this specific adapter you are holding is the type which may catch fire because the sata end can hold a max of 54 watts while the 8 pin end needs 150 watts which will cause overheating and fire potential, there is the type which has 2 sata cables to an 8 pin which is a little bit safer but still does not meat the 150 watts required because now instead of 54 watts 2 cables combined will do 108 watts, the one which i think is the safest is the 2 sata to a 6 pin because the 6 pin requires 75 watts and with 2 sata cables it can handle it with ease without overheating because it is has headroom

Hey. Interesting video. I just scooped an MSI 6900xt for my Thinkstation p520. Not realizing the gfx card has 3 x8pin power ports. Unfortunately The Lenovo Psu is proprietary too. It has two 6-8 pin gfx power outlets on the motherboard. But also has 2 auxiliary power terminals on the mother board labeled ODD pwr, and HDD power, which have 4 pin connectors. I cannot find any info on the output from these power ports, but they came with 4 pin to SATA power adapters plugged in to them right from the go. I’m going to try to run the GPU using a dual SATA to 8 pin connector to take up the third port on the graphics card… but I’m a little scared to plug it in. Any thoughts?

i think these plugs also have max wattage so that's something else you would want to consider. On these setups it shouldn't go anywhere near it I think it's like over 100w maybe even over 200w, but with higher end gpu's that could have messed something up.
