Re: 3:50 With all due respect what you said about 6 pin to 8 pin cable is not accurate: There is a danger to the user if they don't know what they are doing but the cable in itself is not bad. I have an old OCZ 1000w power-supply and it only had 4x6pin, connectors despite the fact that it had more then enough juice to run a Xfire or SLI for 2 cards. I used two of these adapters to power 2 R9 290x playing games at Ultra for over a year now. There's nothing wrong with the adapter if your psu has enough juice on the rail. The extra 2 pins do not supply any power. It's a close circuit and if your GPU does not detect closer, it won't run. In the regular 8 pin, the circuit is closed within the psu. In the cable, the circuit is closed within the adapter. The 8 pin standard is there, only to signify that the cable is guaranteed to able to supply a minimum amount of amps (I beleive an 8pin cable should be able to handle at least 150W at 12V and the 6pin is rated for a minimum of 75W). If a user is unsure what their PSU is able to deliver, they should not use this cable. I would not recommend buying these cables from a noname Chinese supplier off of eBay. The build quality is made to last exactly one day more then the paypal refund claim period.

My solution was to use the 8 pin then use a converter for the old power but my question is this. Will i be better off using a 6 pin to 8 pin converter then connecting the 6 pin in the other 8 pin connector on the video card? Let me know thank you.

I'll need to turn the 6pin into a 2 x 8pin connectors so I can power my 980ti, but I've noticed the round and square pins are sorted differently in the PSU and in the GPU standards so I can make a frankenstein adapter from a 6 to 2 x 8pin and change it's 6pin part to match the pinout of my PSU. It this safe?

I'm not going to "upgrade" my PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1KW to some lesser PSU just to get 8-pin PCIe. You obviously aren't over-loading a +12v rail with two into one! You seem to be confused about the purpose of the warnings. It's where you get the other 6-pin from after adapting your only two that's a problem. Also you may not realize that you aren't supposed to connect more than three drives to any one chain but I didn't hear any warnings or even a mention of the utility as an extension.

My 3 month old Corsair CX500 bronze (from a good supplier) has dual 6 pin headers, maybe for SLI. Now I want to go from using the integrated graphics to a separate GPU. Corsair show the CX500s now comes with an 8 way header. Do these things just change with fashion ? The power draw for my system (with the GPU) IS within the capabilities of the PSU, but I need an adaptor between the two 6 way and the single 8 way. Does this still make the adaptor a bad thing?

Question, i picked up a Xeon e5 1660v4 computer so great, but the powersupply is really special it has a sort of Pci-e power built in that plugs into the motherboard, plus the usual 24 motherboard pins are totally different so i canno change the PSU Problem is : i have a RX Vega 56 coming, it requires 2×8 pins to work but that stupid powersupply only has 1×8pins and 1×6pins. I don't really have space to install a second PSU (but i could try to do so) and i cannot change the powersupply as a normal wouldn't be able to connect to the motherboard. Think a really good 6 pins to 8 pins adapter would work ? I saw HP ones for 40 bucks but if you have cheaper but good ones (150watts+ rated) i'd take them ! Thx

What if you have two 6 pins and need one eight pin? I got an Evga graphics card that came with an adapter to turn two 6 pins into a single 8 pin. I read somewhere that one 6 pin is good for up to 75 watts and an 8 pin is good for 150 watts. It sounds safe to me as long as the power supply has the two 6 pin connectors. The 8 pin end is the one for the graphics card and the two 6 pin ends are the ones from the power supply so this one really combines two connectors into one rather than splitting an 8 pin into two. This is the one that came with the card in the box and not some other one that came off the shelf with all the other adapters.

Do you have anything on splitting and stacking molex cables? Should I worry about anything else other than the total voltage required by the system? I.e. am using all 3 plugs from the 1 cable (type 4pin - 3x 4pin molex) connected to the source to power 3 hdds. Decided to add disk cooling (with same 4pin molex supply), can I split the power plug of each disk, or should I draw a new cable from the supply (and mess the wire management worse than it already is)? same with fans connected to the Mo-Bo with the 3 pin adapter, should I split or should I use a new molex + adapter from the mo-bo?

my psu is from 2007 it's 800w and is sli readdy, it has two cables for sli each cable has 2 6 pins for 2 gpus. i don't have any extra 8 pins apart from my cpu. Can i use only one cable on a 780 gtx with 2 8 pin adapters since my psu has a lot of watts or should i put on 8 pin adapter on one cable leaving 1 6 pin hanging free and the other 8 pin adapter connect it to the other cable and use both cables on the 780 gtx? what is your recommendation? thanks in advance!

hey my psu only has 1 8 pin for pcie power. i want to get the radeon hd 7950. it requires 2 6 pin. i know 8 pin can supply max of 150W while 6 pin can supply max of 75 watts. i ve found a 8 pin to dual 6 pin splitter on ebay. my question is can i use that splitter to power the video card? because half of 150 is 75. it should be the same thing isent it? so at the end of the day wont the card get the same wattage as it would from a dual 6 pin? Someone please reply and thanks in advance!!

i have a 09 model HP, with an outdated power supply but i just recently purchased a XFX ATI RADEON HD 7770 1GB GPU to run DayZ, but the GPU requires at minimum 450W power supply & 6 pins, but the GPU itself was about $150 so i couldnt afford a good PSU, so i had purchased a Cooler Master - eXtreme Power Plus 500-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply for about $40 @ bestbuy, but the PSU do not have a 6 pin for the GPU is it ok for me to use the dual 4pin to a 6 pin adapter & run it safely?

SO, I have a question for you. I am in the process of building a new computer and until it's done I'm using my older build. So I upgraded my GPU from a 1050ti to a 1080ti and would like to use it in my older unit until I make the jump to my new one. My problem is power. My current psu is a corsair HX650. I have 2 available 6+2 pcie connector on my psu. The power cable that I got with the GPU doesnt fit into my psu. I'm confused as to what cable I need. Can you or someone please help. Psu is a corsair hx650 GPU is a msi gtx1080ti gaming x. Thanks.

hey guys, my PSU is a shitbox basically, its an ISO-480pp (420 Watt) and i cant seem to locate any molex connectors coming out of the PSU, i think i found one but all the cords are so tightly bunched, i cant tell where the other end is coming from. if i use that first one he talked about so that i can get a double molex to 6-pin for a gtx 550, will that work?

Hi ComputerTechTV I have an old PSU and I am gonna be upgrading my motherboard to support an Intel i5 2500k. My old motherboard which Im using now is a Gigabyte GA-A75M UD2H which uses only a 4pin 12V connector. Now I am planning on buying an Asrock Z68 Extreme3 or Asus motherboard to go along the 2500k. Problem is those motherboards need an 8pin 12v connector. My question is, is it safe to use a adaptor from 4pin to 8pin? What would you recommend? I know buying a PSU is the best way to go but as of now I just want a temporary solution as I will be upgrading to a better PSU. I will be using the PC for gaming thus overclocking will be there but would just be a slight overclock to maybe a 4.2 or 4.6ghz. Thank you and keep up the helpful videos!
