    Great and helpful video. Helped with my understanding and to solve an issue with my son's computer wired in this way. The one thing you don't highlight is the current/power rating on the wires... that is important to ensure there is no melt failure in the wiring. Typically the 18 AWG (yellow wire) that carries the 12 V rail can only handle 10 A max safely, which is likely why two SATA connectors can be put in series on a wiring chain (each drawing 5 A max as you note, which is fine for most hard drives... not for GPUs). In your video, you appear to be connecting the dual SATA to the same wire harness... that means both connectors may be drawing from the same single upstream 12 V wire (i.e., if there is only one yellow wire in the harness), so your 5 A max holds since that still is at the 10 A max for the single wire (or 120 W). But if you need 150W from the PCIe power connector (like many GPUs) each SATA connector needs to have its own yellow coming from the power source (i.e., connected in parallel, not in series). Any other peripherals on that same yellow wire will also use up some of the wire current rating... so please be careful! For my son's PC, this was critical because the hard drives and GPU were getting power from the same 12 V wire which caused the GPU to fail because the wiring could not handle the power draw. Switching to a different SATA wiring harness from the hard drives resolved the issue. Simple fix, but critical. Again, thanks for the video. It really helped.

    What's actually safer/more reliable? 2x SATA to 6 pin or 2x Molex to 6 pin (assuming both are running off the same 12v rail)? I keep hearing mixed opinions on this from both sides.

    There's more risk with molex adapters as they can be poorly manufactured and short themselves out which will kill whatever is hooked up to it. SATA will provide less power so you may have to limit it to prevent the cable from melting

    I've used the 2 x SATA to 6 pin connector very successfully to power a GTX 1060. Seeing as 75 watts of this cards 120W TDP is supplied via the Motherboard, the two SATAs only have to contribute 45W. I wouldn't want anything more demanding than a 120W card as the single power cable coming out of the PSU has to power everything in the PC aside from the CPU and motherboard.

    buy a dual sata to 6 pin converter like in this video. My friend is using it and has no problem. He is using some gtx 1050 ti with 6 pin, I forgot the gpu brand but it has 6 pin connector needed, so we tried and the converter worked well. I tested the same 1050 ti with my pc that has 1200 watt psu and compare the result to using the dual sata to 6 pin connector in his pc. no difference whatsoever in benchmarks score, only 1 fps margin of error. his psu is a quite shitty psu called true power! with 450 watt rated. upon gaming it did not make any weird noises, the pc does not do weird things either. now, he is currently using it and has been 8 months or so, no problems so far whatsoever. Since it worked so well, he said he is ditching his intention to upgrade a psu since it will waste money. yeah he is a cheapskate. but i advice not to overclock or anything like that, sure it works but i personally dont feel safe ocing a card without a good psu. I am just sharing my experience, I am no pro, and will not be responsible for any damages done.

  • @HenryStarling
    @HenryStarling3 жыл бұрын

    Your conclusions at 6:36 is wrong. If both SATA cables are on the same output of the PSU, it's still limited to the capability of that gauge wire. You'd have to draw from a separate SATA from a different cable than the first. This of course does not address the potential for a fire, something SATA cables are notorious for when drawing GPU wattage through them.

    You have to ask yourself though, why does a regular 6 pin have 3 yellow wires (12v) and 3 black wires (ground) and I am only using 2 of each wires? Some people even cobble together an adapter where only 1 yellow wire is used. The PCIe slot can deliver 75 watts, so if a GPU has a 6 pin connector, or especially an 8 pin, then it's a higher wattage GPU (some well over 200 watts) and will suck quite a bit of current (amps). PSUs have several built in safety devices, but as long as the total power output isn't exceeded the PCU will not shut down. Thus, it can't tell the difference if the load is coming from the device via adequate number of wires, or a red hot single or double wire on fire because it can't handle the current. The wire basically becomes a resistor and gets hot AF. If you know what you are doing it's fine to make your own adaptors. If not, bad things can happen.

    by looking at it, it doesn't make sense. you're taking the power from one supply line that gives you x amount of amps. what difference will a splitter do that you connect to it? it's like taking 10l of water from a tap with one or 10l of water with two buckets.

    Cool thanks for the video tutorial!! I’m curious about the old 2010 Mac Pro towers that use 2 mini 6 pin connectors? I have a Mac Pro 2010 tower and a Vega Frontier Edition. The Vega uses 2 8pin connectors so I assume based on your video that would equal to 300watts but I’m not sure if 2x mini 6pin to 8 pin adapters are going to provide enough power.

    The question is, is the 120w coming in through the two sata power connectors going to cause any issues over time because it was only originally supposed to be 75w? Same with the 8pin 150w connector getting 180w.

  • @ouya_expert

    @ouya_expert

    3 жыл бұрын

    The 120w/180w is how much power the connectors CAN provide not how much they will. You want the available power to be higher the maximum allocated to prevent excessive power draw on the sata connector or it will melt or catch on fire

    Safe with 550w PSU for a GTX 660?

  • @itfc88
    @itfc883 жыл бұрын

    Hi you made it out that the graphics card only gets power from 6/8 pin PCIE cables which is untrue it can draw 75w from the pcie slot. Also a six pin is up to 150w not always drawing 75w it's just a max figure because there is no in-between a card drawing 100w total will still come with a 6 pin and so will a 150w card dosent mean the six pin will be pulling 75w from the 6pin most of the power will come from the pcie slot

    thanks for the very informative video. there is a video which explains molded-in sata cables has a risk of catching fire due to faulty contact within the mold. is this a high probability in 2xSATA > PCI cables? because wattage per sata is low in this case. another question is are 2xSATA to 6+2 cables safely usable in 6pin graphics cards when extra two are removed?

    In building a gtx 1060 miner with 9 gpu cards the 850-watt power supply has only 6 power gpu cables ports, the remaining 3 gpu cards need to be powered by other sources. The easiest power source is to use sata cables from the PSU to connect to 6 or 8 pin adapters, however, I believe sata cables have a maximum watt rating of 54. The GPU cards are set to mine using no more than 70 watts per card. Is there a safe way to use these sata cables to power any of the 1060 cards by using one sats cable from the riser and another sata cable to the 8 pin connector on the gpu card.

    8 pin sata is 6 pin +2 and the +2 are grounds. Also, doesn't a person have to consider the gauges of the wires powering a daisy chain Ed power line powering 3 sata drives if they are to power a 150 watt 8 pin sata connector? There may be a difference between Chinese power supplies and the more expensive name brand ones

    The last time I had my psu open (done this a few times) the red wires pretty much all connected at the same huge glob of solder. Same with the yellow, and so on. All the same guage wire too. So long as you stay within the limitations of each single wire coming out of the psu, I think you'll be fine.

    You've actually have a few options, you can use a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter, 2×Molex to 8pin adapter, or a 2×sata to 8 pin adapter to get it powered, look up any of those and it should show you where to purchase them
