    I just ordered 15 of the simple SATA to 6 pin connectors. AFAIK the SATA Connector is rated 4.5 amps (58w) while the 6 pin is rated for 75, touch some GPUs have been known to exceed specs by a massive margin. The use case for me is older GPUs that either go slightly above 75w or just have the extra power connector for potential overclocking ability. Since they require the power connector, they are less sought after than ones just managing without and thus cheaper. As far as Power Supplies go, a lot of Business grade office PCs actually have reasonably good ones in terms of quality, at least in relative terms. I'd always take the chance adding a adapter on a 300w+ FSP 80+ PSU than with a used no name PSU. Next to me is a little Fujitsu with their usual tiny proprietary PSUs from the 3rd/4th gen Intel days. The PSU is rated 250w total or 280w for 20 seconds, but it has 2 12v rails at 15 amps (180w) each and a surge for 17amps (204w) for 20 seconds. If you'd max out the load on a i7 3770 (which you wouldn't pair with the GPUs mentioned below) with a stresstest it might go up to 100w, leaving 150w. 550Ti and 650Ti are rated around 115w peak, maybe 130 ish in Furmark.

    If I am supplying a 4070 ti super GPU (285w) with an 8 pin, 6 pin to 8 pin adapter, and the GPU slot, can the sata to 8 pin adapter be a good additional support power supply? 500w PSU in an eGPU chassis.

    Hi, I notice this is kind of an old video, but I have run into a problem of my own that brought me in curious as to if I could use something like the adapter you are showing. I was recommended a 2x sata to 8pin for my Dell OptiPlex 9020mt (sadly I only have one open sata cable as I have a bit of network drives installed in this pc.) The graphics card is a GTX 1650 (which I was told would run on my psu as it only takes 75watts) however when i plugged it in and started it up it asked for me to power down and connect power to the card... sigh I keep the pc online all the time I will likely be gaming on it as well as video editing and creating my own animation in the future, but I figure at 75 watts that shouldn't be a problem, I am wondering if you think this might be a good idea until I can afford to upgrade my actual psu. (tight budget right now)

    When I copy and paste my save files of Gran Turismo 3 and Freekstyle into the memory card it says it went through but when I check it by launching pcsx2 without the game's it doesn't show the saved data. I'm also using the 2.0 version of pcsx2 and don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    Hey thanks for all the knowledge however I was wondering if there's a time limit to use these adapters as in for how many hours a day of constant use? I have a 75W GTX 1650 with 6 PIN it draws 47W at 100% load from the 1 SATA to 6 PIN adapter and 25W from the PCI slot, knowing that the GPU wont be at 100% all the time lets say 70%-80% in gaming sessions so for how many hours a day can I use it?

    NOTICE : YOU NEED TO CALCULATE YOUR GPU TDP CAREFULLY !!! one sata cable can supply 54w, and pcie can supply 75w, so the maximum is 129w, and there are two sata to 6+2 pin converter existed, that one can supply 54+54, include 75w pcie will become 183w For the safe, please only implement this solution when you found your gpu will only use 80% - 90% of the maximum power, one sata ~100w, two sata ~146w

    2:21 the ps2 definetly would have recognised it. Problem is that some storage products need more power. For example I have an old hard drvie that i run my ps2 games from on OPL. If I where to connect it to my ps2 it would work just fine. But I have another, a newer one, which doesnt work when I plug it into the ps2's usb porn but it works on my router. Just a problem of power.

    The only problem with using those SATA to 6/8 pin adapters to power a GPU is the SATA power plug itself. They're "only" rated to 4.5A (So 54W). That sounds a bit pathetic when you think that 400+W GPU's are a thing now, but remember that the PCIe slot will be supplying up to 5.5 amps (66w *) on it's own, and if you're looking into using a SATA/8pin converter in your computer, you're probably not intending to run a RTX 3090 Ti in it anyway. So with a card that just uses up to 120w (something like a GTX 1060) it should be fine. A better option though would be to use the older 4 pin Molex connectors. Those bad boys were designed back when hard drives sucked big power, and are rated to a whopping 11A (132W) each, so with just a straight through 1x4 pin to 1x8 or 6 pin converter you'll get a much more usable 198W, and if you have 2 unused PSU cables with Molex plugs to turn over to GPU feeding duties (And your PSU has the neccecery wattage headroom on the 12v rail), you could run a 2x4 pin to 8 pin Y lead and pull 330W. (* Apparently some motherboards will now safely push the 16X PCIe slot up nearer to 6.25A, so 75W)

  • @cristiandavidaguillonangul1702
    @cristiandavidaguillonangul17027 ай бұрын

    Good Answer. Thank you. With that in mind, I would like to ask you, Is it better to use a dual Molex to 8 Pin Connector using only One Molex Of these Two Connected, Would Work Fine for a month at least so I can save to purchase a new Power Supply Unit. It is a GTX960 and it's maximum Comsumption is 120 watts? Thanks in advance.

  • @Reman1975
    @Reman19757 ай бұрын

    @@cristiandavidaguillonangul1702 It depends on how the twin Molex to 8 pin cables wired. Most use 2 4pin molex plugs so the minimise the number of stubby jumper loops they need to get power to all the pins in the 8 pin end, so only connecting one of the 4 pin plugs may mean only 4 of the 8 pin plugs pins are getting power. IIRC, most 960's have a 8+6 pin power connector setup, so if it was me, and my PSU didn't have either a 6 or 8 pin plug, I'd probably just see what unused power connectors my PSU actually still had, then buy whatever adapters I would need so I could use those. With 66w already coming out of the PCIe slot, most of the remaining adapter options will be fine for the last 54w that this card needs........... Well, actually, I don't personally tend to use adapters. What I'll usually do in this situation would be to get some long 6 pin and 8 pin extension cables, cut the male plugs off, remove and open the PSU, then solder all the wires directly to the +12v and ground rails. Though to be honest, I wouldn't recommend this approach to anyone who hasn't played with electronics in the past as you really need to know what they're looking at or you could cause a pretty expensive problem. Back in the day I used to build my LAN party PC's into either clear acrylic cases, or one off open cases where everything was on show, so removing unnecessary power cables and making the remaining ones exactly the right length was pretty important for the over all clean look I'd be going for. Occasionally I'd need to add extra cables directly from the PSU so I didn't have multi connector cables strung between components. It isn't difficult, but as I said, if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing you're best to just use adapter cables.
