HP 6 pin proprietary power supply Video card upgrade adapter Elitedesk GPU

www.amazon.com...
This is the first time I have ever seen the weird proprietary power supply. I noticed when I went to install an external video card and notice the strange power supply. I had to get a 15 pin to 6 pin adapter to make it work. Back in business.

    idk if this is help to anyone these days but if you dont care about asthetics do some research on dual power supply setups if youre running a 6 pin card like this. essentially your main power supply is plugged in to everything but the gpu and the second power supply is. giving your gpu an entire power supply to work with and you probably wont experience random shutdowns when you do anything intensive. 👍 (research the correct way to do this i left out some things)

  • @fturla

    @fturla

    5 жыл бұрын

    If the old power supply unit does not have enough 6 or 8 pin PCIe connectors, you have the option to see what cables the PSU has that are available and buy adapters that can convert the cables into the appropriate connection you need. Please note that if the video card or other PCIe hardware you are trying to put into a computer requires more power than the PSU provides then no matter if your installation is correct the hardware will not get enough power and your system will be unstable. Before buying the adapters make sure you have the available power, then the available cables to add the adapter to. One end of the adapter will either be a SATA, Molex, or PCIe connection and the other end should be the connection type you need such as a 4,6, or 8 pin PCIe. Generally, a 4 pin PCIe only needs one cable of whatever type comes out of the power supply to fill the need for the amount of power for a GPU. But if the graphics card needs one or more 6 pin PCIe, then one cable adapter may not be enough to give the card enough power. The video shows that the card only needed a SATA to 6 pin PCIe adapter cable for this situation. Be careful in buying the cable because weak cables are prone to meltdown hours or weeks after installation because they weren't designed correctly.

    The cooler uses a nonstandard hole pattern. It cannot be replaced with aftermarket cooler. Depending on the problem you have, you can replace just the fan if that is out of commission. The stock cooler seems plenty strong to cool an i7-3770, if there is a temperature issue, likely the processor TIM has degraded and it needs to be delidded.

  • @SianaGearz

    @SianaGearz

    4 жыл бұрын

    It'll work but it's not terribly safe. Somewhat irresponsible and not recommended. The power supply is not terribly confidence inspiring, plenty of people had trouble with them even when they're barely loaded, but the GPU is technically within its power limit. What's worse is that SATA connector's maximum current handling is significantly exceeded by GTX950. It should run well initially, but with time, accelerated surface degradation can set in and the connector may become a source of fire. Or if you're lucky it might be fine for decades, no way to tell. As to using 4-pin AMP (like used on old hard disks, frequently misnamed Molex), it has nominally higher rating than SATA hard disk connector and hypothetically sufficient, but from my experience, the ones you get nowadays are highly suspicious fakes and cause plenty of trouble even with much, much lower currents. Not trustworthy at all.

    The mainboard supplies hard disks and optical drives with power via specialised cables. He installed a SATA to PCIe power adapter onto the cable that supplies the hard drives, in place where one of the hard drives would be. Needs a bit of care, you don't necessarily have a lot of power leeway, but 750Ti should be totally fine!

    SighSteez Get a sata to 6 pin adapter and then plug it into your power supplies Sata cable, this way even if you power supply doesn’t have a 6 pin, you can still power your card

    Not a good idea at all. Either use an external PSU or solder the PCIe 6pin straight in the PSU.

    Why it's not a good idea ??

    @@ahmedibrahim5994 You are getting your power from a single SATA connector. That by itself is marginal, you usually have 2 12V cables feeding the GPU. Then in these systems those SATA power connectors are not wired straight to the PSU but to the mainboard. We don't know how many amps that can withstand... I'd open up the PSU and solder on a PCIe power connector straight to it.

    It's not 'ODD'. It just business, mate! You can see for other desktop PC brands, they have another proprietary power pin model such as Lenovo and Acer with 12 pin. The reason why the brand owner decide to use their own power pin model is to protect their product from unauthorized modification/replacement. And you know what, based on my experience, they build their PC for last. As long as you use their own component as a replacement, the PC will run for years. But if you want to use aftermarket power supply instead, maybe because you need more powerful graphic card on your PC, you can buy the 24 pin (conventional power supply pin) to proprietary power supply pin converter that is widely available on eBay. And you say it is weird? Hahaha.... How long have you been in computer repair business, mate?
