HP ProDesk 600 G1 TWR - Teardown and gaming upgrade

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I'll do a full teardown of a HP ProDesk 600 G1 tower. During the re-assembly, I will upgrade the CPU and memory and will install an SSD and GeForce GTX 1650 video card. Once all of that is done, I'll do some benchmarks to see how this improved performance and we'll test out some games on this machine.

    I bought a ProDesk recently along with 2x 8gb Silicon Power, and a RX 6500 XT. Frankly, I had no idea what I was doing, and I was basically using approximations based on builds using similar hardware, but I was unsure whether I was burning the $200 or so I spent on a project I completely underestimated. This video was a major help for both the installation process and the viability of the ProDesk for a reasonably capable gaming PC, so I really appreciate this. The only difference is that since the 6500 is a little longer, I may not be able to use the front USBs, but with the six ports on the back, that shouldn't be an issue. If I rememeber, I'll update this comment about my own results once all the parts arrive and I get everything installed.

    @@jensdbe Update: all working perfectly, just waiting on the CPU upgrade to arrive next week, I'll have just about maxed out the capabilities of this machine. Final product: - GTX 1660 Super (low profile; returned the 6500 to leave full access to the SATA and front USB drive ports) - 32GB DDR3 (1600 MHz if anyone is curious) - 600W ATX PSU - i7 4790 (best CPU compatible with this chipset as far as I can tell) That setup with the stock CPU (i5 4670) and the 256GB SATA SSD (included with the purchase from PC Liquidations) runs well enough to output every game I've tried so far at 4K and 60+ FPS. I'm holding off on a few more intensive games for the CPU upgrade to arrive, but for my current needs and game catalog, this is more than enough. For what it's worth, PC Game Benchmark rated the 4670 build as a 48%, and that jumped to 70% with the improved CPU. Again, even without the upgraded CPU, I'm shocked that this thing can stand using my 4K TV as a monitor for now with a 60 FPS output. Especially coming from someone whose most powerful gaming devices currently are a refurbished Switch (first revision) and a PS3 Slim, so I had no idea what 4K games were until booting up Control on this PC. Thanks again for the increibly helpful tutorial. I have always been more confident working on the software side of PCs than the hardware, and this is the first PC (non-laptop) I have ever owned. I'm on a moderately tight budget for now, but by finding sales on refurbished or open-box parts, using a Prime trial for free shipping across the board, and cashing in various rewards point for Amazon gift cards, I built this entire rig for right under $400, and I doubt I'll feel any need to upgrade for the next several years.

    @@jensdbe Yes, i'm quite pleased with the final performance. The best performer goes to rig with P106-100 that has pcie x16 2.0. On the other hand P104-100 was not performing well due to heavy bottleneck at pcie lane (only x4 @1.1). The only problem with this chasis is its size, so massive; but the price outweigh its size. For $30 I got thick metal case, mainboard Q85/87 with x4 Ram slots, decent cpu cooler , silent fans and real 320W Lite-On PSU. Plus a lot of CPU option, from desktop to Xeon. As comparison, here in Indonesian used market, with USD 30 i could only buy an H81 board + Core i3 4160 combo. That's it. LOL. For similar money you might be better off looking for a HP Z230 "Tower workstation". They'll take that i7 4790, and 32gb of DDR3, but most of them come with a rock solid 400w PSU as standard. The PSU even comes with a 6 pin power plug for a graphics card, and enough spare 4 pin Molex plugs that you could use a Y lead to power 8 pin graphics cards if you wanted to.

  • @jensdbe

    @jensdbe

    In general, an AMD Radeon RX580 is faster than a GTX1650 but is also consuming more energy at the same time. As long as your machine has a PCIe x16 slot, you can install any of both cards. The most difficult or restrictive will probably be the power consumption of the card. Your power supply needs to have the right connectors and capacity to run the card.

    That's a tough questionnto be honest. Maybe increase the memory to 16 GB but other than that, I'm not sure. A faster GPU will most likely have the CPU and DDR3 as bottleneck, except for a RX580 maybe but that's also not a substantial improvement. Storage improvement would require NVMe, so I think you are already pretty much at a sweet spot without really replacing the whole machine.

Also you need to make sure if your big GPU isn't drawing too much for the PSU since it's only 320W. GL

    There might be a bad contact for the CPU. I would remove the CPU and carefully inspect the pins on the socket to see if there is nothing preventing a proper contact. Sometimes a piece of dust or old thermal pasted gets in between socket and CPU. Another thing you could try, is to put back your old CPU and see if everything still works. It might just be a broken/faulty new CPU as well.

    Try putting your old CPU back and updating the BIOS firmware to the latest version, maybe new versions brought new CPUs support with updated Intel ME.

    to upgrade the power supply, you would need to upgrade the motherboard as well. It would be cheaper to build a new PC at that point. If you want to upgrade only the power supply then it has to be made by HP and must have same connectors as the current power supply though I won't recommend it because there is only so much power you can convert from SATA to 8pin gpu connectors before it bottleneck your performance

  • @jensdbe

    @jensdbe

    4 күн бұрын

    It can physically fit inside but the power consumption is the biggest issue. As the power supply is 320W, that's on the limit for an RX580. You will also need a conversion cable for the 6- or 8-pin power input that the RX580 requires, which isn't recommended either.
