I am a retired press photographer. I worked for Le Journal de Montréal newspaper for over 35 years. For 10 years I have been doing photography especially for thé pleasure of making beautiful images. I have been working in digital photography since 2001. I strarted with the Nikon D1, a camera full of promise but whith very poor results. I owned a Nikon Z7 for 2 years and thé results exceed my expetetions. The lens are exceptional and I look forward to your reports. Now I leave near Québec city. My english is not very good but I understand everything you tell us on KZread. It’s always a pleasure to see you. Yvan Tremblay

I have had my Z7 for two years as well. As a hobbyist photographer, It was a significant investment for me and is probably my last camera. For the past two years, I have endured the non-stop commentary of the "KZread Photography Pundits" eager to focus on their perceived shortcomings of the Z cameras. Every camera is just a tool and some are better suited to some tasks and photography specialties. That is why there are four Z cameras and counting. You are spot on to focus on the commonality of the mount, the ergonomics, and software. Cheers, stay well!

Thanks for this video Matt. I own a Z7. I've 'only' had it a year, but I love it. Your video was a great repost for the naysayers who have in my view been far too quick to dismiss the strides which Nikon has made with their mirrorless Zs. You rightly point to 'use case'. My first love in photography is landscape work, so the focus system works a treat for me. No longer do I need to focus and recompose as I often had to with my D810. Being able to place a focus point across 90% of the sensor is a real treat and when I do, the focus is almost instantaneous. Rarely do I find the camera hunting, and then only in seriously dark conditions. I am also developing documentary work and am currently working on a project in the small village where I live. Again, for the most part, I am not dealing with fast moving subjects, so being able to place the focus point where I want, works fine for me. Add to that the new Z glass. The ''kit' 24 - 70 punches well above its weight and is great as a weight saver when I am walking into the local hills or mountains with a fully laden backpack, saving space too. But I also have the 50 and 85 1.8 primes and I'm having a lot of fun with the 85 taking it outside its traditional portrait mode and using it in the landscape, especially wide open where its fabulous shallow depth of field can create some great effects. I'm frantically saving for the new 70 - 200, plus the 2 X converter to give me a relatively compact and lightweight 400 - great for picking out detail within a landscape vista whist also opening up wildlife opportunities. One other thing I would emphasize is the viewfinder. The ability to overlay a spirit level or histogram is just great, meaning I can keep my eye to the viewfinder whilst I am playing with these, together with the ability to zoom in and check focus, are a real delight. I too am happy with the one card slot and one of the things which is all too often missed in this 'debate' is the way in which a 'lesser' card such as an SD can in fact slow down the camera, especially when compared with the XQD/new Compact Flash formats. Of course, no camera, whatever the brand, is perfect and there is always room for things to progress. I have my personal niggles - one being the way the 2 second timer switches off if you don't use it for a little while. But, as you say - there are workarounds - a remote release would remedy this for me. I'm looking forward to seeing where the Z6S and Z7S take mirrorless on the next leg of the journey, though I'm in no rush to change from what is, as you rightly point out, a very well rounded camera - for my use case. Keep the videos coming.

I believe the z mount Mirrorless system is the overall best cameras on the market. And I believe many of these KZreadrs (not Matt) complain too much. “Oh it doesn’t have two card slots, the auto focus isn’t there”, photographers are becoming very lazy to technology. Instead of using single point focus and putting work in, they want eye auto focus. And having one slot is not the end of the world it works fine for me.

Yes, and I had 2 late model Sony's (Last 2 were the A7Riii and the A7iii) and I can tell you I haven't lost any shots with my Nikon, because the focus system is actually very, very good if you know how to use it. The eye detect on the Sony in very low light is slightly faster (slightly) - but I've had no trouble shooting sports and birds in flight with my Z6 - you have to learn your equipment. It's a far better camera - from the ergos, to the image quality with the Z glass. I've used both for over a year, and as a part time pro photographer I can tell you that I would take the Nikon's over the Sony's without reservation. I've got nothing against the Sony's as they are good cameras - but after giving both a fair shake there's no comparison to me.

Hey Matt, you’re the reason why I stopped comparing MILCs via spreadsheets and started to look into ergonomics and ease of use! I‘m a canon user for the last 10-15 years, started with a 350D and am now planning to switch to mirrorless because of the lower weight and smaller form factor and I greatly appreciate Nikon‘s decision making smaller and lighter lenses first and then bring out the super fast, super heavy, and for us mere mortals super expensive lenses. I considered staying with canon but their pricing is just over the top in my opinion, I love the design of the Z Cameras and I especially love the fact that most FX lenses are weathersealed, I‘m looking forward buying the Z5 with the 24-200mm lens as a great allround/travel kit, it’s lighter, sharper and more capable then my current setup and that‘s more important for me than AF speed or higher resolution! Thank‘s for your great videos!

I feel like the difference between 1.8 to 1.4 these days is literally just DOF. High iso in low light is no longer a problem. The audience for 1.4 is so small across the board. The vast majority of photographers who actually work and not just YT will buy a 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and 14-24 2.8 all 2.8 aperture lenses which are used to make real profit across the board regardless of brand. Regardless of light situation 2.8 is easily the most used aperture for profit. I've seen numerous videos of people saying the old 85mm 1.8 was enough once upgraded to the 1.4 and those few who love the 1.4 are full time photographers who'd surely buy a 1.2 over a 1.4 baring cost mainly for shallower DOF. Iso 100 to 6400 is basically the same when printing and I think if you need 12800 iso at f2.8 hand held, you're shooting in too low of light. With IBIS and BSI sensors you can still shoot handheld. The fact we have 51,200 iso makes it possible of shooting action at f4 at night with no flash especially with cameras like the D6, 1DxIII, and A9. Unless you need dynamic range which at night is limited anyway 1.4 over 1.8 boils down to technique and if you can see the difference of 1.8 to 1.4 in a print, more power to you (not you, but in general) when bashing a brand for not supplying 1.4 native. I think Nikon looked and said oh they could just use the 85mm 1.4 F mount.

@@MattIrwinPhotography 100000000% correct. Not only that though, I truly believe many of these photographers don't know what they want because they never had what they saw results from was amazing and that's valid. However I can only speak for me, I have a 60mm 2.8 (pre-D) Micro Nikkor that gives me bokeh that can literally obliterate a background at 2.8 so is it the aperture value or lens design? Granted I'll lose stops of light, about 1.7ev but these cameras give you 3 stops back in iso (12k, 25k, 51k) or 3 stops of IBIS in stability, that's 6ev and granted they have a lower aperture we're talking 10ev to play with in the dark without a tripod. SPOILED is honestly to kind of a word Matt

"if you need 12800 iso at f2.8 hand held, you're shooting in too low of light" - YES !!! Have some people forgotten the photography is about light? YES! If you cannot find a way to shoot bellow 6400 (or even lower for that matter) at 2.8, you have a lighting problem, not sensor sensitivity problem.

20:54 - Yessssss this!! I feel like this obsession with eye-auto focus is such marketing hype. I absolutely hate Eye-AF. I don't care how good it is. I don't want the camera telling me where to focus. WE as photographers should be making that decision. I've even seen prominent KZread photographers say they can't use the Nikon because in certain backlit situations the Eye AF is inconsistent. Are you kidding me?? I've missed focus exactly ZERO times I've told the camera where to focus using the selector on the back of my Z6 and my D850. Plus, who are these people shooting portraits of people moving towards them? That use case must be almost non-existent. Not to mention people shooting moving birds in flight at F1.8 or even F2.8. It's just NOT happening. If you are shooting at F8 or F11, if you barely miss the bird's eye using Group AF, NO ONE WILL KNOW because of the DOF. That's real-world not marketing BS. I'm one of those who have been holding out for the second generation because I truly rely on my vertical grip on my D850. The two card slots, MEH...I've had the D850 for almost 3 years and I've never used the second slot (well...initially I did with .jpgs going to the second slot but I just ended up deleting them so the redundancy was irrelevant). What's the point when XQD cards are SOOO good. I've never once had a failure either (in either the Z6 or the D850). Loved all your points. Cheers and have a great weekend!

I do mostly landscape photography. For me the Z7 is extraordinary ... light weight, extreme dynamic range, exceptional and easy to use menu and button system, and excellent, sharp end-to-end lenses. For most of my work the 14-30mm and the 24-200mm are all that I need so my camera bag is light for back country hiking. On special situations, I will add to my bag 2 additional lenses. For night scapes, the 20mm, f/1.8 lens is excellent or for more depth of field control, l use the 50mm, f/1.8.

Bought the Z7 on release day. Carried it with two gripped 850s for a month, witnessed higher keeper rates than the DSLRs and bought a second Z7. Sold 3 850s, two D5s, two 810s. Bought a Z6 at its release, and a 2nd Z6 in a filmmakers kit 4 month later. Converted all to ProRes RAW, have Ninjas with AtomX sync time code modules to my Zoom F6 recorder. Added multicam video capture of live theatre to our product offerings. Profitable and investment recouped at just 8 months in...thank you Nikon! When the Z7 arrived I owned some 30 f-mount NIKKORs and to date I have replaced all available focal lengths with native glass. Almost half of my f mounts are gone. I own the entire S range minus the NOCT. All the S glass has been optically superior to f mount in edge-to-edge sharpness, contrast, no artifacts and of course all have 5 axis ibis and silent af. The technical advantages of the cameras are great, and make life easier, but it is the Z mount S glass that is the paradigm shift. It is the strongest reason to go Nikon Z. The 70-200 2.8 FL has been my most used lens, essential to the point I carry a spare and a stunning accomplishment by Nikon. It worked well on the Zs, albeit had quite noisy af motors being driven at the high data rate of the Zs, but images were great. The new Z 70-200 2.8 VR S is a home run, their best work yet in my opinion. Faster and more accurate focusing and silent operation over the FL, face tracking is 90% of what I shoot and it just hangs on like the jaws of a pit bull. I was skeptical at just how much better it could be than my beloved and venerable FL, but it is. The really crazy difference is it's unique VR/IBIS integration. Hand holding a 200mm lens at 1/10 sec sounds insane, or more like magic. This translates to being able to shoot at lower ISO, which means lower noise and greater dynamic range. I have no need to switch to the Z6 in low light, as the Z7 at 800 instead of 3200 provides a vastly more detailed image, and easily cropped by the client for final use vertical or horizontal. I shoot live theatre, and a very common request is to shoot for versatile cropping as it allows the client’s art director max flexibility in layout of their souvenir program books. Also this is a major case for the Z7 over the Z6 as the added resolution retains the quality better when cropped. For me Z conversion has been 100% positive, the FTZ is merely a stopgap to use my exotics (200 f2, 300 and 400 2.8, etc.) before they have Z versions. After 45+ yrs shooting I am easily doing my best work now with this remarkable gear, DSLRs and the f mount are firmly in the rear view for me.

dear matt, i fully agree. no pro i know would „hate“ any camera company and their products. as a pro you choose a brand because of the way it feels in your hand and the functionality. i wouldn’t go so far to say the files they produce because it’s in the responsibility of the photographer. that’s what many „influencers“ forget to mention: it’s in everyone’s responsibility to do the ground work in the photographic field to know about aperture, time, iso, focal length and the aesthetics behind all that.

Like the other comments say - refreshing, honest review. There is a distinction between a "device operator" with 90% focus on technology & specs and a photographer. This is how I call these people obsessed with specs and features - device operators, because they are far away from real life photography. And yes, not every camera is ideal for every use case, like a car cannot be both an SUV and a limousine. Have you seen any reviews complaining a limousine won't get you to your forest cabin on a dirt road as seamlessly as an SUV? I haven't - but I've seen complaints that Z7 is not as good low light performer as the A73.

Now the content owner of the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f1.8, the 24-70 f2.8, and my most recent addition the 70-200 f2.8. I can only commend you for what you've said and as I'm sitting here I'm probably one of the most non official Nikon Ambassadors in South Africa. Thanks for the review Matt. The banding was only a problem for a few pixel peeping youtube reviewers. The truth of the matter is, you could pick up a flag-ship camera from any of the major players and barely if even tell the difference in real world performance, at least as concerns image quality, especially if you're shooting raw. Sure if you blow the images up to 200% and push the shadows 6 stops, you can find differences. The exception might be action and wildlife, where slight improvements in focus function might be important. To me, we are lucky to have all these great cameras today, and I really can't be bothered splitting hairs. The Z7 feels good in my hands, and the image quality suits me fine.

"You can just grab the focus wheel". Outstanding and an ah-ha moment -- and so basic, it gets lost in the fog of today's technology. I started with a Nikon FTn with the split-image focusing screen and remember manual focusing well. There are so many KZread videos about "[Name of Camera], One-Year Later", but I've avoided them. Your video is the real thing by a real photographer and artist and, as others have said, thoughtful and insightful. Just real talk. Long time viewer/subscriber but first time commenting here because of the excellence of this video like all your others. I am enjoying my D500 for wildlife..mostly birds and am looking forward to landscape and full frame photography and mirrorless advantages. I am in no rush having started my photography with 35mm film and the all manual Zenit...!!! I am curious as to whether the Z EVF will convince me now . Years ago when choosing between Sony 6000 series and Nikon DSLR the optical viewfinder totally won me over. Ideally I’d like if the Z7s is also sufficiently improved in autofocus to manage BIF and then it could be my do everything machine. Hopefully the added processing power on board is an indication that this will be sorted, especially given the competition from Sony and Canon.

I also love the fact that the mount is big enough for them to go up in Mega Pixel easily. Also i think you and i touched on this in one of your other vids but i really think they could squeeze a Medium format sensor into the Z mount. Imagine an 80MP medium format Mirrorless that can still adapt every lens under the sun. That to me is exciting!

I started my professional career on the D750 and used it up until Nikon came out with the Z6. It’s all I have used for all my work and I’ve never had a moment where I felt hindered by my camera. Since I shoot tethered into CaptureOne like 90% of the time, I never write to my card slot anyhow, so one card slot has never been a worry of mine. When I am out away from the studio I’ve never had a moment where I feared my XQD card failing on me. I will most likely be using the Z6 as my video camera for many years to come and will get the Z7s as my portrait body when they are finally released. I just don’t see a need for a rumored 61MP sensor camera. 45 is more than enough for me. I would actually be content with the Z7 if there was a vertical grip with functioning buttons. I think the Nikon mirror line gets way more flack than it deserves.

I watched your videos and bought a Z7 used a month ago. I have been absolutely loving the little thing. It’s so much lighter and smaller than my old D800 and I can still used all my old lenses on it, including Tamron lenses, which all worked perfectly. I’m a bit a a nerd and I love shooting trains, and the Z7 has been my main train spotting camera ever since I bought it. Though it doesn’t have the real 3D tracking, the focus tracking mode is better than the 3D tracking on the D800. It covers much more of the frame and it’s way more accurate. In good lighting, I get 80-90% success rate with fast moving trains. In poor lighting, like in an underground station, the Z7 does struggle a bit, with only around 50% in focus, but I have to admit those are really difficult scenarios, with the dark colour front of the trains providing minimal contrast and with the headlights shining directly at the camera, reducing contrast even further.

My first digital was a little pocket camera E7600. I was so impressed with that little thing I went into dslrs. First a D40x, D7100, D750 and finally a Z7. Flash forward to 2024 and I still can't justify replacing it. I'm retired but still shoot an occasional wedding or event with the 750 and Z7. They do what they are supposed to do. Been thinking of the Z8 but I wouldn't use it for video (I use an easier to handle lumix mft for that) and I don't shoot much fast action, so I can't justify the expense of something that I'll only be using part of it's capabilities. I am keeping my eyes open for the rumored Z7III but will still make my decision on price and specs. I believe in an old saying: "Don't fix what ain't broke".

On top of having 1 slot, if it should fail. You can recover 95-100% of the card. I used the Nikon D3s professionally and didn't need x2 cards. No failures from a CF card. My D200 I bought at release back in 2005 had no failures even with 3 broken pins, still running today with a friend at over 1million clicks. My D3s was at just under 100k clicks with 0 failures. I've only recently got the Df after selling my D300. I used to build computers and knew to format multiple times b/c you can literally see the residual data which is why I always formatted my cards multiple times. The only issue I have with failure of the SD cards is physically breaking.

Hi Matt - been watching you for some time now, but have never commented. First, I'd like to say that I appreciate your commentary - it is thoughtful and balanced and most importantly you look at things from a very practical POV which is refreshing in the KZread world of sensationalism and hype. I am a long time Nikon user - started in the 80's with the FE and later the F4 and today I've transitioned from the D750 to the Z6 while awaiting the pro-level Z to finally drop (bought the Z6 instead of the Z7 because I knew that a better more refined version of the Z camera would be coming and wanted to spend as little on the body as possible to start using the Z system and getting glass waiting for the expensive pro camera to come). For me, things like the vertical grip (fully functional) are very important. In my portraiture work I find that 75% + of my shots are done in the portrait orientation - as such I used that vertical grip on the D750 all the time - something that is sorely missed on the Z6. Two card slots is important to me - as an event photographer it is important to have redundancy. I understand where you are coming from - I also shot film for a long time and had digital cameras with only one slot, but as you say, it is still better to have the extra slot than not to have it regardless of the media that is in the first slot - I agree that CF Express is robust and I too have not experienced failure with these cards - nevertheless when an if my ass is on the line to deliver the shot, I'd like to know that I am as covered as possible - also on a less important note when shooting for fun I like to shoot RAW to the 1st card and play around with Jpeg picture control profiles to the 2nd card - I don't like it when both are on the same card and thus intermixed in the same folder. I admit this last point is less important but once again I have yet another use case for 2 slots. Most importantly, AF is important to me, and especially Eye Detect AF. If using this technology in a wedding situation for example, it needs to be spot on (like the Sony and apparently now the Canon). The Nikon version even after firmware 3.0 is better but still unreliable because it will from time to time lose eye acquisition for no apparent reason and getting it back is not easy. Unlike on the Canon where you can drag the focus back to the eye if it drops, on the Nikon there is nothing that the user can easily do to reacquire eye focus because Nikon opted to put the eye detect AF within the fully automated AF selection. In addition to seriously improving this tech, they also need to give us manual override so that this can be used in clutch situations where a few seconds of fiddling with it will lose one the shot - so for this reason I say that the Eye AF is still inadequate for professional use. This is not the case for Sony and Canon which means they have a significant leg up in this market which is bad for Nikon. I want Nikon to succeed and like you I prefer Nikon to the others in most ways, but there are a few things that simply must be ironed out with the next camera released and this issue is one of them. To list them the Z6S/Z7S and beyond must have: 2 card slots, industry leading subject and eye tracking/AF, fully functional vertical grip. These things are essential just to compete. Less essential but still important: A vari-angle screen (imporatant for video use and low angle portrait oriented still shooting. I realize that Nikon thinks this type of screen compromises weather sealing but not adding it will lost them even more market share. They should include it on the Z6S/Z7S and cameras of that level and they can leave it off the flagship Z8/Z9. Secondly, the release of more fast glass - more 1.2 primes and potentially some zooms that are faster than 2.8 - if Canon can do this then Nikon can. Nikon is the better optics manufacturer and has been from the beginning - Canon used Nikon glass in the beginning - it is sad to see Canon making more innovative new glass than Nikon in spite of how optically excellent the current Nikon glass is (I agree the S lenses are excellent 1.8 lenses from an optical standpoint, but I wouldn't really call them innovative. Canon's 15-35 F2.8, 28-70 F/2, 600 and 800 F11 - the rumored 70-135 f/2 and of course the various 1.2 lenses - all of these are innovative - as in setting new standards for the industry and opening up new ways to actually shoot. Nikon's awesome 1.8 primes do not do this. Yes, they are optiaclly superior to old 1.8's and even 1.4's but there is nowhere that I can shoot with these lenses that I could not shoot before with an old 1.8. Unlike, for example, Canon and the 600/800 F11 - this opens up birding photography to a whole class of people that never could really do it before. Personally I don't care about those lenses or birding, but they are innovative in the way that so far Nikon has not been. Just an opinion. Anyway, thank you for your awesome channel, and sharing your experience and point of view - I think you are someone worth listening to and I look forward to your future content!

Hi Baron, great to see you joined KZread today so glad it has allowed you to comment and share with the community. Welcome aboard, great to have you here. :) Indeed I think for first generation cameras the Z6 and Z7 have done so well. Like Canon's first gen, the R and Rp I feel these cameras were not actually aimed at professionals as thus they are very competent for their intended markets. Indeed vertical grip, card slots etc will come very soon, probably this year in the Z6s and Z7s along with improvements in eye and face detect, including dual processors in those new bodies. Thus addressing bringing the Nikon's on or very near par to their peers in the slots, grips and tracking departments. And in many other areas I feel Nikon are already, ahead as I mentioned in my video. And Sony and Canon have some work to do there. Myself as a long time working photographer, eye and face detect don't concern me as I don't use or rely on them to conduct my professional outcomes in any situation. I understand some do, or think they do. But I suspect anybody who has been shooting more than 3-5 years, had to learn how to focus other ways, and thus are capable of creating outcomes with the current focus system. I totally agree with you at this stage I would like to see the vari angle screen. And I do hope Nikon provide that option for the Z6s. As that will be the camera most used for video I suspect. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and so great to meet you. Cheers Matt

I absolutely love my Z6, I came from a D800, was a huge upgrade from that... got my best pics from the Z6, I’m all in with Nikon. I love what they are doing with the lenses. Some people have complained that they didn’t release the 1.2s and the 2.8s fast enough, but to be honest I’m glad they slowly released those. As it made it easier to move into the Z system, it wasn’t so hard on the wallet with 1.8s and the f4s. I think Nikon are the sleeper of the bunch.

Hi Matt, great channel mate, i was a Canon user for past 16 years, I’ve just sold all my canon gear £7000 worth. I made the move to the Z7 and I absolutely love it , I’m 66 now and I wanted something lighter for hiking, long walks in the Lake District, and street / architecture photography. Personally for me , it’s one of the best moves I’ve made photography wise. PS , your my fav Aussie . 👊👊😂

I recently migrated from a d850 and d5500 to a z6 and z7, replaced all my f mount lenses with a 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lens, I was never so happy. the only old lens that kept it was 105mm 1.4

Hi Matt - I loved this video because it came across as more of a story that was entertaining and easy to listen to rather than a dry, technical review. As an aside, while I am a Canadian, I did live in Melbourne for a year in the late 1970s during my "10 year" overseas holiday and had a great time. Go Magpies.

I'm coming up on 18 months with the Z6 (and I bought a second after 6 months). So far, I have 3 lenses -- 50 f/1.8, 14-30 f/4.0, 85 f1.8 (which I've reviewed for video). To say the Z-mount is revolutionary is not hyperbole. These lenses prove something is different, and I don't think it's just coatings; I think the mount with its flange size and sensor distance plays a big part. I'm no technical expert -- I just appreciate good equipment that helps me create good work. I still have my f-mount lenses and one D800. I expect to sell those soon to finance more Z glass. Like you, I don't have much use for tracking and come from 3 decades using manual focus and film. However, last weekend, I decided to try eye-detect and tracking for a studio portrait session. It did well, but not great. i.e I think I got more misses than if I'd have used my usual single-point with the joy-stick to follow. I concur with you on all other points regarding the usual gripes from the usual suspects and their acolytes. As a lifelong Nikon user who has nonetheless used other brands as needed (Deordorff, Hasselblad, Minolta, Yashika, Fujifilm, etc.), I admit to a certain amount of bias. When the Z-6 was released I was so happy to abandon my Fuji mirrorless for the familiar menus, superior ergonomics, and general pro design.

Hi Matt. Wow! What a fantastic summation of the advantages of the awesome Z7 and Z mount! As a landscape and product photographer, I only recently discovered this Z System, having come from the Fujifilm X-System. The Fuji System was excellent as well, and though I was generally quite pleased with the output I was getting in terms of image sharpness and detail, it was only when I began printing large posters that I felt like I would be better off with a FF system. That's when I discovered the awesome Nikon Z7! And I agree with all of your points, but have one comment about those who say that only the "2.8 lenses" are "Professional" grade. I quite adamantly take issue with that statement, which implies that any lens slower than f/2.8 cannot be "professional". It also implies that every photographer puts great stock in bokeh quality. I for one, never shoot wide open, and in my line of work, utilize only the mid apertures from f5.6 to f/11, for optimal image quality combined with DOF. From my limited use thus far, I can state with certainty that the f/4 24-70 Nikkor S zoom is the sharpest zoom that I've used in 45 years in photography. Not to mention the AF-P Nikkor FX 70-300mm F4.5-5.6E ED VR with the FTZ Adapter being superbly fast AF and sharp! The f/1.8 50 Nikkor S is perhaps the sharpest lens I've ever used, among many dozen over the years, from various manufacturers. In any case, thanks again, Matt! Regards, SteveTQP

@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt , Good video mate , I`m a bit of a sony boy ..... just a hobby shooter , , but id be happy to shoot with either , although i do have a nikon super zoom which also comes out everywhere with me when i go out to take some pics with the sony ;) , mate i love that super zoom :) , look across the other side of the bay and can see no object except a hair of land in the distance , crank up the super zoom , see buildings cars people , just amazing :). When the z6,z7, eos/r was just fresh out i had been looking for my first mirrorless and spent months researching all of the big three FF mirrorless models , the first one i looked at was the eos/r , nice camera , but i discounted it for a few reasons at the time , but also the lens options where fairly pricey , so after spending time in the canon store in sth melb i went to michaels in the city and tried out the z6/z7 and a73 all on the counter at once . The a73 did not feel as nice in my large mitts as the z cameras and the view finder was just nicer to look at in Z7 which i really fell in love with , but at the end of the day , the z cameras where a new system (and i`m old and oldies usually go for the tried and proven stuff ) , and sony a73 did have some redeeming features that appealed to me , plus it already had the runs on the board as a pretty decent reliable all rounder as a third generation model despite some of the well known small niggles with some of the A series sonys , the not so user friendly menu system for camera newbies , the lack of touch functions except for focus, sort of a tad cramped with the small body . I have learned to overcome any niggles with the A73 , and the grip i have learned to deal with and i`m pretty adept at handling it now , and happy with it for my use as a hobby shooter , looking back i think i would have been just fine with the Z6 or Z7 . In the end what works for you is holy grail , and as you have stated in your video , it is not always just about the camera functions , it is the operator behind the camera that makes the difference , hence why your a pro and get all keepers and why i give my delete bin a dam good work out :). Thanks for posting i will keep an eye out for your video`s in future . Cheers .

I was an early adopter of the Z7 and also purchased the battery grip to help balance my super-telephoto on the gimbal. For landscapes, the Z7 was fantastic - no complaints - love it. For sports / Wildlife, it was hit or miss and gave me frustrations and you know that. I now use the Z7II and Z6II with much improve performance and waiting on the Z fc to replace my Fujifilm. Hopefully, the next iteration of Nikon Mirrorless will bring Nikon back to the front and give loyal Nikon Customers the tool they require for Photography (Z9).

This is the first time I have visited your channel AND just purchased my Z7 this afternoon. Bought it online with the Z 24-70S. Jumped on ebay and bought a Nikon XQD 64gb card. Bit of an upgrade from a D 5100 and first mirrorless camera. Stayed with Nikon as I have a few lenses which I hope will fit with the adapter, especially the Nikkor 10mm rectangular fish eye. Not sure if I am excited by the new Z mount yet but I am excited by the mostly positive reviews and that finally a camera that a professional is happy to use is within my price range. Still not cheap however for a camera that came out in 2018. Don’t care about only one card slot. The supposed issue with banding is ridiculous. If you have to pull that much out of shadows to notice banding then that shot should have been deleted. I am excited about great dynamic range, wi-fi, Bluetooth, focus stacking and all the other attributes that will help my landscape photography. Moved to a new house and want massive 1000mm x 750mm canvas prints to adorn the walls and this camera should be perfect for that. I like your style and I will subscribe. Thank you.

Actually enjoyed that. Good to see someone bringing some balance to the debate. I personally thought the 58mm F0.95 Noct was a bit of a waste of time but when you think of it as making a statement of the Z mount possibilities then there is sense to it. I like the idea that you're buying into potential with this system. Long term that could bear fruit

I concur about the Nikon ergonomics, among other things. I‘m on photowalks for long times with a grip and a Sigma ART 50-100mm, which is heavy, attached to my D7100 and I have it dangling on three fingers for periods walking between shots without strain. They did a great job here.
