As it seems to me, many people criticize Z system, because they looking on f/1.8 and f/4 lenses, and compare with the same F lenses by price, but nobody don't compare by image quality. It's absolutely different lenses.

@@mgotovac Mario, you lost me with this response. Faster lenses are too slow? I agree with you completely on for a specific purpose and expensive. Not always less sharp (but the Nikkor 85 mm does support your point that this is sometimes true). I don't have any experience with Z mount lenses so no comment about aperture issues. I'm open to mirrorless but for what I shoot the system isn't there yet and neither are the number of Z mounts.

@Awy. I am glad the Z6 works for your needs and I've seen many positive reviews for it (more than the Z7). The problem is that the camera (while reportedly excellent) lacks several easy things Nikon could have implemented to be competitive in the Market. Canon's recent entry is a clear example of this with 2 card slots, CF express to handle fast transfer of 45 megapixels, 12 fps, animal/human eye-auto detection, fully articulating screen. You might not need those features but many shooters will make use of them. Let's hope Nikon can up the ante and soon.

Another great review, James. Having come from the D850 to the Z7 like yourself, I would agree with most of your points. Yeah, the EVF overlays are a minor annoyance, but it’s not the end of the world. There are two important reasons why I love my Z7 - The first would be Nikon’s build quality and renowned reliability. The second is the legendary image quality that you get from a Nikon, and especially on the Z7. Nikon could divert development costs into adding features found on other cameras, but they prefer to put it into the IQ and reliability. I prefer that. Remember, this is their first real mirrorless camera and it will get even better. Thanks for your videos - I enjoy your style of presenting and look forward to more from you.

Thank you Colin - arguably they have actually delivered the best first generation mirrorless camera from any of the major brands. So I feel the future is looking bright for the z line 👍 If the Z6s has a flip screen I am almost certainly going to pick it up as my main video camera & back up stills body. Fingers crossed!

I agree with the vast majority of your comments, good and bad. I don’t really shoot video, so for me the U modes are very useful, being setup for landscape, portraits and action. I switched to the Z7 (w/ 14-30 & 24-70 f 2.8) this year from the Fujifilm X-T2. The reasons for switching was that I wanted higher resolution for landscapes and better corner to corner sharpness - I haven’t been disappointed! I also find the IBIS really good. I can actually realise the benefit of the high resolution sensor handheld at 1/15 sec at 24mm. Overall a very powerful camera for architecture, interiors and landscape, maybe not the first choice for action / wildlife.

patrick771 I’ve seen some great shots from the 10-24, but my copy seemed to have an issue with entering, even after a paid repair by Fuji. I think it may have had something to do with the image stabilisation system in the lens not centering correctly (which is switched off when using on a tripod). Interestingly the Nikon has image stabilisation in the body and not in the lens.

I'm in the same boat as you. My old landscape rig was the X-T2, 10-24mm, 16-55mm and the 50-140mm. Now I'm fortunate to own the Z7 with the 14-30mm and the 24-70 kit lens. Resolution, dynamic range and low light performance was what I was looking to improve. In my opinion this is a monumental upgrade. I was always content with the results I was getting from my Fujifilm but there was always that desire to step things up a notch, even if it was partially for my own satisfaction.

Good, thoughtful review, and nicely unbiased. From personal experience, I can say that the Z6 and Z7 are bloody good portrait cameras, too. Edit: James, are you really sure, as a landscape photographer, you would want an articulated screen (flip out style)? You seem to be quite robust with your camera equipment. Do you want something as fragile as a screen hanging off the side of your camera? And they don't play well with L brackets either, I've found. I know they are useful for vloggers, and so get a lot of reviewers on KZread shouting for them, but most of us aren't videoing ourselves very much. I think that something like the Fuji fully articulated screen (tilt and flip) should be adopted by more camera manufacturers. It seems to offer the best of both worlds.

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    @JamesBrewphoto

Thanks Brian. Yeah I 100% would like the flip out screen but I would like a system which tilts and flips therefore pleasing everyone and working with L bracket setup etc. I currently shoot my video on a Canon camera but it annoys me using two different systems with two sets of lenses. If Nikon was to release something with a flip out screen I would certainly get it. Pretty much all the camera brands are moving towards flip screens now and I believe Nikon could well be the last of the big brands not to do so. They need to catch up here and quickly - its sad but true that KZread vloggers (not me - i'm a minnow) are driving the market to a large extent now, and if Nikon don't please them they'll pay the price. The Z6 would be an incredible video camera for vlogging...It just needs that screen. Hopefully they put this right on the Z6s...

Thanks Mali! I think the Z6 or the Z7 are both very strong choices. The Z7 has the edge on outright resolution in stills but the Z6 has the edge on video output quality & low light performance. You can't really go wrong with either. I will be picking up a Z6 myself at some point as a second body but I'm just going to wait to see what the S updates bring which should be announced in October. I buy virtually all my camera gear second hand and I think you are being very wise to consider that avenue into the Z mount. The 14-30 f4 is the best lens I've ever used...If you like wide angle landscape shooting it alone warrants moving to the Z mount!!!

I‘m an MFT user. But the Z-Series might get me into Fullframe. I love the EVF. The price is almost ridiculously low for what the camera can do. My main problem is size and weight. I would have to plan my Fotoshootings a bit more. Since I‘m only a hobbyist, it‘s hard to justify to switch or add a new system, because it’s the lenses that cost a lot. Though L-mount is even bigger and more expensive. I believe (conspiracy theory) Sony made Nikon and Canon to only add one card slot to their camera and it had to be XQD, Sony product, if they want to join the FF-Mirrorless market.

Brilliant video James, so helpful to a Nikon user like myself who started with a D70 in 2004, then the amazing full frame D700 followed by my present D810 body. I really now need the Mirrorless compact dimensions and like the product design in these first Nikon Mirrorless systems. Sony just don't have the ergonomics of Nikon. I am like you a landscape photographer and don't need the video capabilities of the Canon R5 and certainly don't have the budget for Canon's new system. Well done I've subscribed and look forward to your thoughts on the firmware roadmap. As a footnote I own a Nikon 85mm 1.4, a Sigma 1.4 35mm art lens and a Zeiss 21mm zf.2, a 70-300mm vr, so I really am never going to change brand, why would I. Not many people will have the deep pockets needed for present Sony, Canon, Fuji or Nikon native glass especially considering the back catalogue of second hand fast glass out there especially for shallow depth of field video using 1.4 glass. The FTZ adapter may add distance from the camera, but that only goes to protect the dust entering when switching between legacy glass like mine. I will probably invest in a quality wet swab cleaning set.

Nice honest review for what you need. Appreciate you taking the time to come back and review it at this point. The Z system is not yet for my purposes as I came to photography and Nikon about 3 years ago with a cheap used D700 (awaiting delivery of a preorder of the D850). At the time the camera was not being purchased to complete a task, but my growth has included looking at the camera as a tool instead of toy. I shoot a lot of birds in flight and wildlife so the Z7 would not be ideal. I realize I'm asking a question you might not be able to answer but has your eye drifted at all toward the Canon R5 and if not why not (other than the expense of changing systems). As you noted, I find the sensors in the D700 and D850 amazing in their own right. The advantages of mirrorless are fairly clear including animal eye-auto detect (when you need it), wall to wall AF point coverage, high quality EVF without blackout or lag and now with the Canon entry 45 megapixel for landscape or BIF/Crop, 12 fps, 2 card slots, and a fully articulating touch screen and glass to go with it. I am not sure if the DOF preview issues are in the Canon or the overlay issue you mention. I would be curious on your thoughts of this. One can hope that Nikon goes out on a limb and creates a similar entry. For this to happen one has to root on Canon because if the R5 would fail in sales (which is not happening) then there would be no incentive for Nikon. I'm afraid between the D6 and Noct 58mm Nikon has not planned the best for the current market. Time will tell.

For my money as good as the Canon R5 looks, Nikon actually have the edge on the lens front for my particular needs. Things like 8K and 4k120 really don't interest me. An excellent review of the Nikon Z7, James! As a landscape and product photographer, I'm quite pleased with the level of sharpness and detail I get from this camera, combined with the stellar Nikkor S lenses! That said, have you had the "known issue" of rubber disintegration" at the Function buttons by the lens Mount? In September I bought an "E+" rated used Z7 from a large camera store in NYC. It was pristine. Then, a few weeks ago I noticed that the rubber around the Function buttons starting to flake off a bit. I was concerned that if it got worse, it could potentially deposit tiny bits of rubber into the sensor area. So, I am exchanging it for a "newer" Z7 with only 15 shutter actuations. I'm hoping that Nikon addressed the issue between the two bodies' manufacture! Thanks again sir! Steve

Over the last few years, I have used most camera systems outside of medium format except for Fuji (seems like excellent cameras and lenses) and Sony (I wouldn't use Sony if it was the last camera on earth!), but now I have decided to put my GAS days behind me and concentrate on the Nikon Z system. Nikon Z cameras just suit me, ergonomically and operationally, and the S lenses are as good as anything made by rivals, if not better. This was not an easy decision to make, as most cameras these days are capable of yielding superb results, but for me, Nikon won out for a number of reasons. I'm afraid that if Matt Granger changes from the Nikon system, he will lose a lot of relevance for me. I long ago unsubscribed from the Northrups and that Hairy Guy because I felt they were becoming very biased in their reviews and were relying on click-bait sensationalism to garner views.

Meanwhile Nikon left out the single most important thing for landscape shooters. An accurate depth of field scale. The brilliant thing about the Fujifilm X-T3 and GFX50R is the depth of field scale. This scale eliminates the need for worrying about hyperfocal distance, focus peaking, focus bracketing, etc. No one on KZread addresses this. I started shooting 35mm film in 1977. A Nikkor 28mm lens with the engraved depth of field scale made landscape shots quicker. If you have 30 seconds to get that sunset because the color and light is changing that fast you'll never get the shot because you're calculating hyperfocal distance. The pitiful scale Nikon did provide has no distance on it. When camera companies take away depth of field scales on the lens and the LCD, landscape photographers have lost an essential tool. I do like your articulate and intelligent videos, good information.

Nikon Z - CONS for me • Only one card slot. As an event shooter having 2 slots is paramount to me. • No vertical release option. WTF? • Immature lens selection. • Not great AF compared to Sony. Firmware updates made it better yes, but still not Sony class. • Low frame rates. • No flip-out screen. • Dumbed-down flash sync to 1/200 when all of their mid- to high-end DSLRs sync at 1/250. Heck, even the Nikon FM2n introduced in 1984 managed 1/250th flash sync with a purely MECHANICAL shutter! • No dedicated Z-series Speedlight with green AF assist beam and built-in radio transceiver. The Z system just has too many faults for me to buy in.

Single card slot is NOT as big of a deal as people make it into. Memory is very cheap now and one can easily get a 64 0r 128gb card (either is more than enough). I been shooting for over 20 years and well over 1 million pictures taken and never had a memory card fail. That being said it’s always nice having a second card slot as redundancy is best. With USB C, I never even remove my card, I just attach the camera to the computer via the USB C wire. The less you touch the memory card the better off it will be.

Hello James, I have watched you use your previous camera the Nikon D-850, I remember when you where in love with that camera. Well, has your photography made any difference or I should say the results of it by now using the Nikon Z7? I have a mirror-less Fuji XT3 which I use for subjects that are closer and I like for portability, but I find that the viewfinder doesn't satisfy me the way mirrors do. Through a normal D-SLR the mirror shows me the way my eyes see everything and I don't even have to turn on the camera for it. Honestly I have been trying to find a bargain on the D-850 since Nikon is focusing on the Z line but the price seems to even go up for the D-850. So how does the Z7 compare to the D-850 from your experience? Cheers. ( I also use my trusted Nikon D-810)

Hi Gino, I think the D850 still has the edge on the Z7 but there really isn't all that much in it. However the Z lenses are in my experience just outright better than F mount equivalents - therefore I actually feel that when Nikon deliver their second gen Mirrorless bodies, it will make little sense to invest into the F mount other than from a pure cost saving perspective. The Z mount is the future. Good luck with your purchase 👍

@@JamesBrewphoto After writing the above comment, I had a chance to visit the local photo store near where I live to get up close and take a look at the Nikon Z line. I inquired for the D-850 first and they where out of that camera body, so I asked to look and feel the Z line all of the three major one's. The first doubt that I had was cleared when I peaked through the EVF of the Nikon cameras to be far superior of even my Fujifilm XT3. I will compare it the Nikon EVF to be on par to the LCD of my Fujifilm XT3 that is how good it is, then the robust built that Nikon is known was second, and third point, when I inspected the XQD card I felt how well built it is and rugged at the same time. Okay, I decided on the camera and with a bit of luck I got it with the 24-70 F4 and the adapter refurbished at a good price point from Adorama. I can see on this video your feelings on the quality and all the positives and of course every manufacturer has some issues to accommodate photographer needs and that will eventually come with time. By the way, great images you have and very balanced colors. Good job on your part. I want to conclude by saying, you have a good passion for the brand and you do use your equipment quite well. Hi, i have a Z6 and the custom user settings did bother me initially but i found out in order to set a custom setting we need to put the camera in the setting we want and then save that state as a custom user setting and when we use the dial to call a setting it only acts like a macro and applies the settings we have saved for that profile. And if we further change anything then that offset isnt reflected the next time we set the dials. I have set my custom settings in video mode for 120fps1080p, 24fps1080p and 24fps4k. For photo i have mapped the custom buttons(joystick press and hold) to temporarily disable flash so that i can review my realtime exposure while shooting with a ttl flash because z6(and probably z7) disables "apply settings to live view" when a ttl flash/trigger is attached on the camera.

I have to agree, EVFs for example are awful. For casual use they're fine but on a serious shoot I hate that delay after the damn camera has gone to sleep. OVF are far superior...

@@FastPawz you could get second hand D750 and some 1.8 35mm, 50mm and 85mm full frame primes comfortably in that budget. I bought the sigma 35mm 1.4 and Nikon 85mm 1.8 earlier this year second hand for £550 for both 👍 or you go all out and invest in the z system...

I have a Nikon 50 1.8 and it’s been lovely, even on my entry level. I want to make the jump to mirror less if that is the future. Just so hard for me to do it lol I don’t want to make the wrong decision

James Brew I had considered changing systems from Canon because I love Nikons, but their lack of high end glass for the z system was disappointing for me. I did go to the R5 instead of the z6 and I believe that I made a great choice as a photographer. That being said I still love Nikons cameras over Sony and canon for dynamic range.

@@JamesBrewphoto hehe,. the D850 iss better then the Z7 but i cant wait for the replacement of it to come out soon, the Z7s. i own the D750 and D850 as you can see on my channel but i might have to get a sony camera for that video work. i love my Nikons but i cant fail to notice they are dragging their feet compared to the competition. they are now in third place being overtaken by Sony in market share.

For myself, I am happy I stepped out of Nikon. This company seems to be doomed, the next Olympus. The only camera which was really great from Nikon in recent years was the D850, the rest, including the Z System is just garbage.

Lol.. Why hoping and waiting for them to alter and change things according to your needs... Just sell it and buy a Brand which is giving all of the creamy stuff... Now adays there is no time to wait.. you have money and you are free to buy what ever makes you happy... Don't be a fan boy... Perhaps Nikon CEO don't even know your name... Best of luck for your future.
