DPReview TV: Nikon Z7 review

The Z7 presented Nikon with a stiff challenge: how to build a mirrorless camera that measures up to its own DSLRs and can deliver a familiar experience to Nikon users. Chris and Jordan have been using the camera for a couple months for everything from landscapes to a studio shoot with portrait photographer Nathan Elson. Find out whether they think Nikon succeeded.
Editor's note: In order to fully cover the Z7's new video capabilities, we will be publishing a separate video focused entirely on the camera's video features and performance.

    Hope Jordan feels better soon. Can't wait to see the video rundown. It feels like...well A) both Canon and Nikon are either holding features back, or super-rough in their implementations so far. Canon, rough. Nikon, great build, but they can't nail the focus yet. ...and seemingly, Canon's got issues so far too. Early adopters, beware...as usual. Give these guys a gen, THEN you'll see the real meat, I'm guessing. B) Nikon seems like they have a better featured, better fleshed out body. Besides the buttons on the front, seems far more solid than Canon's non-weather-sealed, touch-pad...no IBIS body. BUT...they're winning the early lens game. Apparently Japan, who has a large Canon installed base, is already eating it up comparatively, but Nikon might just be too late to the, admittedly, very early punch. And this isn't even considering video where Canon has some pretty annoying UI issues, and 'dat crop on the sensor. ...and C) As a crop guy waiting to jump, this is all popcorn viewing as far as I'm concerned, especially until Panny releases in March. In another generation...1-2 years out hopefully, I think it'll be a very exciting time to jump in. Until then, GREAT JOB you two, as always.

    It's not something that will effect many situations but if we dont make note of it THEN what kind of comments do we get? Besides it's always good to see what's going on behind the images. The requirement for hybrid AF sensor based systems does have an effect on image quality, and I find that pretty interesting.

  • @dasaauto2024

    @dasaauto2024

    I agree, I think the Z7 is getting far more criticism for this borderline hypothetical banding than it deserves. Regarding the “what if” where the flash fails right at the “decisive moment,” well I think that’s the photographer’s fault, period. Relying on a camera to salvage an image underexposed by 6 full stops is more likely to breed sloppy technique than it is to be a potential life-saving feature, on balance. Nothing about photography is guaranteed-but the way this camera’s 6 EV correction is criticized, along with having “only” one card slot (I’d take one XQD card over two SD slots any day)- it sounds as if we’ve got the world’s best up and coming photogs right here, on KZread and on DPR. I don’t even shoot Nikon, but it looks like a heck of an effort, taking perhaps even more flack than what Canon’s employees cobbled together on arts and crafts day, with their EOS R.

  • @bcBiz
    @bcBiz5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the review. As a non-professional photographer, don't mind single card. Some of the many reasons I would consider the Z series Nikon is a) size, b) weight of the body and c) the investment in (a lot of ) Nikon glass. That is why I am unlikely to jump ship. Who knows, there is only model 6 and 7, maybe z8 may be more for the professionals who require multiple card slots, or options to use older types of cards with an adaptor. The large/wide lens mount could make way for a larger sensor.....

    My experience coincides with the test. A quite usable camera with only a few weaknesses. The weather protection, however, is low. The robustness of the camera leads to believe it is weather sealed. Especially in the holes of the microphone at the top, water drips in quickly. The manual/operating instructions says, the operating conditions must be observed: “Temperature: 0 to 40°C/32 to 104°F; humidity: 85% or less (no condensation)”. Rain means 100% humidity! The warranty expires when used in rain or high humidity. The same values apply to Nikon Z6. Finest water droplets penetrate thru all sockets and the components (for example the circuit board) are beginning to corrode slowly. This does not lead immediately to the failure of the camera but to their creeping death. At the photokina this was confirmed. I use a tripod when it rains, put a plastic bag over the camera and operate it with a waterproof smartphone. Because the Z7 was not designed as a professional camera, there is unfortunately no portrait grip. With portrait grip I could operate as usual. With the Z7 I must dislocate when working in portrait mode. A long photo shoot in portrait format, especially with heavy lenses, is not possible. In the case of close ups, the autofocus sometimes hits the nose, the hair, but not always the eyes. Now I take pictures with aperture 4 or 5.6. So it is not noticeable that the autofocus is something wrong. All in all, a nice camera for anyone who wants to shoot some pictures at Christmas and it has a reasonable price.

    Nikon shouldn't have done such a priced/high resolution camera if all of the issues in the main areas were not solved. At this price tag you expect better performances. You can accept them in the Z6. Canon did not do this mistake. Panasonic will follow Nikon's strategy and we'll see if the S1R will shine in ALL of the main areas or not. Was Nikon intention that of tackling Sony on the A7R? Strategically is fine, but customer satisfaction wise... Don't get me wrong, the Z7 is a great performer for some kinds of photography but it's not an allrounder. And at this price tag it should have been. Good choice to have tested lenses other than native because this is what most users have already in their bag! Thank you for your great usual job and good decision to make a separate and deeper review of the video features.

For me, the most important things in a series of stills cameras like ergonomics, build quality, and compatibility with a sea of used lenses are all there and will continue to be in future versions. Christian Samsel Like I said...OR use Nikon F mount lenses which are known to be fully supported. Using third party lenses at this point is a ‘your mileage may vary’ situation. I’m sure at a later date sigma and tamron lenses will be back to fully functional like they are on F mount bodies. For now I think it’s questionable and not consistent.

  • @KyleClements

    Being limited to only Nikkor lenses for usable, reliable AF is a huge con for the Z series of cameras compared to their F-mount DSLRs. Lots of photographers shoot with 3rd party lenses. Personally I wish they tested some Tamron and Tokina lenses as well.

  • @ThePhotographyHobbyist

    @ThePhotographyHobbyist

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@KyleClements Sigma already released a firmware update but maybe more will come. Tamron announced they'll have new firmware for some lenses to make them compatible with the Z. Personally, I think for the time being SOME 3rd party lenses will be fine (but just how well they work compared to Nikon F or Z mount, I don't know) but newer AF-S and Z mount lenses would be the safe bet. The system is only just over a month old. The F mount has had decades for 3rd party manufacturers to come up with good/compatible lenses...so I think it's just a matter of time before Sigma/Tamron lenses work as well we're accustomed to on DSLRs or other more mature mirrorless systems.

    We also shot tests with the 24-70mm F4 S at 70mm wide open. It had pretty much the exact same hit ratio as the Sigma 85mm F1.4, but the Sigma's shallower DOF made it easier to see when focus hit or missed for the video, so we used those sequences.

    Chris; health & safety warning-that footwear looks totally inappropriate for the snowy outdoor terrain! Nathan; Just keep your D800, you are getting awesome shots with it! I believe the D850 is continually sold out/on back order in the U.S so I think that tells ya something. I have the D7500 with 9 F-Mount lenses from Nikon, Tamron, Sigma & Tokina and it works great for me shooting all sorts from wildlife, landscape, low-light, portraits etc. Even the 4K video is good with some tweaks to settings. I am waiting for Panasonic to smash it with their 2 FF mirrorless cameras soon, though I suspect they won't be cheap either!

    Regarding the focussing not being on par with SLR - from a technical perspective it currently never will. The optical path in a SLR allows the system to work out which way the lens needs to be moved to bring an out of focus target back into focus. Mirrorless does not allow for this. The system basically has to try both ways a small amount and see which goes better. Without a breakthrough in how focus testing works on mirrorless, these will unfortunately never even equal SLR speed and solid lock on moving targets. What has already been acheived with mirrorless focus speed is pretty amazing.

    Nice low-key review Chris. It’s clear that the Z7’s poor continuous AF performance will be its unfortunate legacy as I don’t think firmware tweaks can save it. I’d like to see you test the Z6’s continuous AF with native glass though...if there’s no significant improvement in AF performance the only thing I can conclude is that Nikon’s engineers really messed this time... which is quite unusual.

    As usual..a solid review as unbiased as possible. Thank you for this guys. I am not getting this camera as i own Nikon DSLR, Fuji and Sony mirrorless..but i hope they keep improving so as to be on par with Fuji & Sony by the 3rd gen of Z7. The single card slot is a no-no...but specially..the adapter not doing AF with old D lenses..and them not opening the game on the Z-mount is the usual crap approach from a company that over-estimates itself. I'm sticking to my D prime lenses, and my Tamron awesome zooms.. with Nikon. In a couple of years...maybe..3rd party lens manufacturers will be able to reverse engineer the mount up to a good solid level of AF speed and accuracy. I'll look into the Z7 again then. Cheers guys, And Jordan, yeah.. Bring that just-video-dedicated-review . They've improved a lot in the video department. Thanks again!

    After watching a bunch of Z6/7 reviews there's something that consistently comes up - "keep in mind this is Nikon's first mirrorless and it's just many things to nail right out of the gate". That's true yes, but of course these cameras don't exist in a vacuum. For any Nikon user who's been itching to switch to mirrorless and was hoping they will match Sony's offerings, "it's a 1st gen" is a poor excuse. There are obviously many other considerations (glass, form factor, etc.), but Nikon should've done more.

    Curious recurring noise pattern in Chris and Jordan's pics - clipped white luminance noise moving vertically down the image, and a lot of the backgrounds are just clipped to white, coupled with very poor blue saturation in the skies.

    please redo the tracking test (with the same model would be great) . I think it is unfair having done it in while it was snowing. and having used an adapter and a non Nikon lens introduced far too many mechanical, non Nikon variables to name the test valid.

    This is the test we chose to show for the video, but Chris and I (as well as the DPReview editors) have been running tests for weeks with native and adapted lenses. The performance shown in this video lines up with those experiences, but you can certainly read about it in more detail in the full DPReview Review.

    I would say the biggest issue with this camera is the price. At that price you expect things like backlit buttons, and dual cardslots like on the D850. Other disappointments is the tracking mode that it seams to have inherited from the Nikon 1 series. Just like on Nikon 1 it is far too fiddly to turn on and off.

    Was the camera used with the native lenses at all in the studio? I used a loaner Z7 plus the S 24-70 f/4 and FTZ adaptor and found the tracking was much better with the Z7 than my D800. My only Sigma to try was a 50mm 1.4 and found it was a lot slower to focus and with my Nikon glass it was surely better than the D800, which is not as sure focusing as a D850, but nothing else is either. It was really good with the 70-200 2.8 and 85 1.4G and 1.8G but when switching to the S lens, it was faster. The new 24-70 f/4 is sharper and far better in the corners than any 24-70 2.8 I have used. I tried it with my 24-70 2.8 G and E versions and there was virtually zero distortion or sharpness fall off in the corners. I get the impression using non-Nikon glass is going to be a compromise since it is clearly optimized for Nikon S and F mount. My 15-30 2.8 Tamron G2 which works so well on all my cameras did not meter correctly and did not AF at all, the only lens I tried that just didn't work. The image quality was excellent, and I have no doubt it could replace my D800. I am not a sports or action shooter except for dance...ballet and the AF was no problem during a dress rehearsal. I was more impressed with the camera, and its solid focus lock than I was expecting after all the negative youtube chatter. I belong to a few photography forum communities and on those the comments from actual users tend to be a lot more positive than the youtube gurus who all seem to be pushing the same 2 brands, possibly because their income is based on clicks and referrals. I am pretty sure I will get a Z7 but the Z6 is tempting due to its bargain price.

    @@fzeo the D800e is an older camera, so it was a pretty fair DSLR for video in its time but you can't really compare it with current cameras in nearly 2019! Thus you should think about the current options from Nikon, which means D7500 / D500 / D850 / Z6 / Z7 Or heck, even the D750 you mentioned which is older is still a very nice 1080 DSLR! Is a much more lightweight file which can match up with the dynamic range and look of a BMPCC Oh and also the D800 can indeed do higher bit rates.... :-) www.eoshd.com/2014/04/nikon-d800-hacked-50mbits-high-bitrate-recording-option/
