    Now in 2022 and this camera has dropped in price by almost 50% in Australia and I am considering upgrading from my old Nikon. I think I can use my beloved 10mm Nikkor rectangular fisheye on the Z7 with the adapter. About to watch Part II and I was very impressed with your instructional video. Thank you.

    Stellar review. Can't believe I haven't subscribed before. Launching with an exotic lens would have spoiled Nikon's initial marketing. It's clear to me that Nikon believes that the diminutive nature of the camera system relative to their DSLR products is the headline achievement. Offering any larger a lens than what was available at launch could have spoiled that message if the public rejected those tiny lenses. I returned a recently purchased D850 (coming from a D810) because I live in an urban environment and leapt out of my seat when I saw how small and capable the Z6 was. My two pennies.

    Helpful tip: the output of the USB-C charger included in the box is 5V @ 3.0A Any charger that can output 5 volts and 3.0 amps to USB-C *should* be able to charge the camera. You can find that information printed on the charger you'd like to try.

    Picked one up used, in good condition, for 1200€. It'll only be used for macro photography, since I got a z8 for everything else, so AF is of no concern. Mirrorless Full frame 45 MP for 1200€ is an absolute steal.

    Two card slots: I do not understand why people make so much noise about it. It takes extra space in the camera. Moreover, it reminds me of the day’s we were using floppy disks for PC’s. It’s old fashioned technology. Why do camera manufacturers not use solid state memory for photo storage? Anyway, I usually put the photos at the end of the day on my iPad and upload them in Lightroom. For me it is more of an issue that there are no lightning XQD card reader for iPad. There is an new USB3 reader, but this only supports the last generation of iPad Pro.

  • @cameralabs

    @cameralabs

    5 жыл бұрын

    The problem with internal memory is what happens if it breaks, or fills up, or you lose the camera? By removing a card, you've removed the photos, and by having two slots, you have the chance for redundancy. I was part of an interview just before Christmas where one of the cards on a camera became corrupted and we lost all the footage from that side. Having two cards would have solved that.

    With this camera I love the native ISO 64 which is the lowest of all mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses. (the recent Leica Q2 has native ISO 50 but the lens is fixed). I don't like the lack of GPS. How difficult is to offer it. The smartphone connection isn't a safe solution. In theory my Sony e-mount autofocus lenses can be used with an autofocus adapter on Nikon Z mount lenses. Z mount has a short flange distance 16mm than the 18mm of e-mount cameras. I don't think that this is accidental. Bye Bye my Sony α7. This is the Nikon's revenge. He he he.... The future Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 S Z-mount lens will break the very long monopoly of Canon with f/1.2 autofocus lenses. That is really nice. Also the manual Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S is probably a game changer. The first manual focus lens by a major Japanese lens manufacturer for many decades which isn't super macro or tilt-shift. Full ahead for manual focus lenses and vinyl disks.

    @@cameralabs hi Gordon, being robbed is never a good experience, but luckily my insurance had me covered and the uk policy has been very responsive and helpful. I spent the last days diving deep into all your reviews from the cameras that I was considering, and now I ruled out the Fuji, because I've decided going full frame. Also ruled out the canon, the lack of a joystick is a deal breaker for me, the touch bar seems too gimmicky, and the lenses are too big and expensives. Now I need to make my mind between the sony a7III or the nikon Z6. Not taking their prices into account, which one would you recommend? I'm primarily a landscape,macro and eventually pet/portrait photographer. Thank you again and once I make my mind I'll make Sure to go through your links.

  • @cameralabs

    @cameralabs

    @@lordmonkey3285 Thanks Rolf, I think you've narrowed it down to two great options. I've not fully tested the Z6 yet, so can't say for sure, but I believe the A7 III will have superior burst shooting and AF tracking, plus it also has eye-detection, twin card slots, a better battery and access to more native lenses. I'd only go for the Nikon over it if you much preferred the ergonomics and or had a collection of Nikon F mount lenses you needed to adapt. The Nikon also has an intervalometer and focus bracketing built-in which may or may not appeal.

  • @markshirley01
    @markshirley015 жыл бұрын

    Great review Gordon far more useful information than any other reviews. I think if you don't need to photograph fast moving subjects the Z cameras are very good. Personally I don't shoot that way. I do like the evf and rear touch screen more than the A73 - if you like feedback they are important aspects of a camera that can get over looked on a camera. Also the rear touch screen for AF is really useful - I work on stages with little room to back up or move and often find myself in contoured positions to get a image or video clip. Again I've tried the A73 and didn't find it's rear touch screen that responsive. (PS forgot to say I've tried both the Z7 and A73)

    At this point XQD is just a stop gap until CF express is a thing. At that point a firmware update will allow Nikon Z and probably their DSLRs to use that instead of XQD and XQD will die a quiet death most likely. XQD has been basically killed by being kept at unreasonable prices by Sony's licensing which is also why other manufactures like Sandisk dont' make them.

    I'm not sure if I had that view enabled, but YES I'm pretty sure you can see the active AF area in playback on one of the screen views.

    AF mode and area, plus other info. Does not seem to be able to indicate the point of focus in the frame. Watch around 6:09, after the geotagging information.

    @@andrear9500 you've got me questioning myself now! I'll check the next time I have one and confirm.

    It absolutely will show the focus point. This option needs to be enabled and then all you have to do is hit the up arrow until it’s demonstrated.
