The "mystical" look comes from the 4x3 aspect ratio where the crop MF image looks wider than FF or APS-C with the same DOF. I tried shooting my R5 with the RF 50 1.2 in 4x3 aspect ratio for a few sessions and the images do look a bit "medium-format-y" if that makes sense. But that's mainly do to the aspect ratio, not necessarily the depth of field. Where the digital MF shines is the out of focus fall off, the tonality and color transitions. But I agree, all formats look very very close, especially when viewing on a small phone screen on social media :-)

Depth of field is determined by the f stops on your lenses, not the format of the camera. The lower the f stop on your camera, the lower the depth of field. The higher the f stop, the higher the depth of field.

I started off in the 35mm world back in 1967 or thereabouts when I got interested in photography and eventually ended up in medium format. I tried many formats over the years and now spend most of my time shooting in APS C, Leica (Leica seems to have the colour coding in the digital world figured out right). I don't know if you are old enough to remember this but I spent many hours in darkrooms but medium format film was so much easier to look at than 35mm negatives. I could never understand people who shoot in a square format. I like to use every bit of film I have in my camera. I admire Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and all those members of the F64 club but I don't remember ever having f64 on any of my lenses. I love f11. Most of my lenses seem to perform best at f11. And now we seem to be in a vertical format world with every cellphone with vertical format camera in it. A narrow point of view, in my opinion. Thank you. I love your videos.

The lack of headphone jack is heartbreaking. I really thought this was the one. I want a photo centric camera that can do adequate video. Why do they sub sample color in full frame 4k? I feel like nobody is making a competent hybrid camera right now. Every brand is going out of their way to omit features to create different segments. I get it, it might be a good way to coaks enthusiast photographers and videographers into buying two cameras. But I think this kind of malicious omission just backfires. In my case I’ll just stick with my older camera and my iPhone. I think enthusiasts will probably go to a different brand for video. Sure there might be a few Fuji fanboys that buy the T5 and HS2. But I think there will be a lot more people like me who simply pass because they left out a 1$ mic jack. To be fair a lot of brands do this and it’s not just Fuji. But it’s just made me completely give up on finding a great sub $2,000 medium sized hybrid camera.

Such a good video for anyone, IMO. I've been doing macro photography for a while, and while I already knew and do much of these things, I still learned something. Reminds me I should actually visit DPreview's website more often...Haven't been there in ages... I also love anything and everything you can do in camera and at the scene/set. Photoshop is fun, but not that fun.

I'd be interested if the lens was between 28mm and 40mm prime and it did raws. I enjoyed the original rx100 mk1 untill it died a few years ago. Sorry Sony but I want a $400-$550 1" compact rx style camera with the basics for photography and quick family/vacation video clips. I don't need every feature in the world and mega zoom at over $1000. Basically a hybrid between this and a Ricoh gr.

I'm certainly glad to have found this even though it's been a couple of years... I'm thankful that I mostly have to cope with wind instead of such, uhm, "tremors", in the wilds of the northern Plains/Rockies! lol Seriously, though, this was a great comparison demonstrating the pros and cons of each line. I'm leaning towards a taller Leofoto minus the center column but was glad to see the general comparisons between these manufacturers.

I did a side-by-side between my iPhone pro 14 and my RX100 mk3 ..... the iPhone does better snaps but the RX did better photo's once you tweaked them in Lightroom. Bottom line... if I am going to spend over a 1000 bucks on some tech that takes photos it would be the latest iPhone pro and not a compact camera.

Minolta firsts: 1) First ever HSS. 2)(Mentioned) First ever Auto Focus camera, the Maxxum 7000! 3) Going back to film, the Minolta Maxxum 9 is/was THE best Pro 35mm film body ever made -- the body was made from Stainless Steel WITH -- pop-up flash! (I used my Maxxum 9's for my pro wedding photography).

If you can comment on the AF performance compared to the X-S20, that would be very interesting - the two cameras share the same processor and some AF algorithms, but use different size sensors.

18mm - Get the new one if you can afford it. 23mm - The old one by a mile, especially if you care about close focusing distance. 35mm - it’s worth it to get both. They’re very different and both valuable additions. Bonus - Get the old 56mm f/1.2. It’s still amazing.
