Andreas Nikolaus "Niki" Lauda (born February 22, 1949) is an Austrian former Formula One racing driver and three-time F1 World Champion. More recently an aviation entrepreneur, he has founded and run two airlines and was manager of the Jaguar Formula One racing team for two years. He is currently working as a pundit for German TV during Grand Prix weekends and acts as non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.
Lauda returned to running his airline, Lauda Air, on his second Formula One retirement in 1985. During his time as airline manager, he was appointed consultant at Ferrari as part of an effort by Montezemolo to rejuvenate the team.[10] After selling his Lauda Air shares to majority partner Austrian Airlines in 1999, he managed the Jaguar Formula One racing team from 2001 to 2002. In late 2003, he started a new airline, Niki. Lauda holds a commercial pilot's license and from time to time acts as a captain on the flights of his airline.
He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 and since 1996 has provided commentary on Grands Prix for Austrian and German television on RTL. He was, however, rapped for calling Robert Kubica a "polack" on air in May 2010 at the Monaco Grand Prix.[11][12]
Niki Lauda has written five books: The Art and Science of Grand Prix Driving (titled Formula 1: The Art and Technicalities of Grand Prix Driving in some markets) (1975); My Years With Ferrari (1978); The New Formula One: A Turbo Age (1984); Meine Story (titled To Hell and Back in some markets) (1986); Das dritte Leben (1996).[13] Lauda credits Austrian journalist Herbert Volker with editing the books.
Lauda is sometimes known by the nickname "the rat", "SuperRat" or "King Rat" because of his prominent bucked teeth. He has been associated with both Parmalat and Viessmann, sponsoring his ever faithful 'cappy' from 1976 onwards, used to hide the severe burns he sustained in his 1976 accident. Lauda admitted in a 2009 interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit that an advertiser currently pays €1.2m for the space on his famous red cap.[14]
In 2005 the Austrian post office issued a stamp honouring him.[15] In 2008, American sports television network ESPN ranked him 22nd on their top drivers of all-time.[16]
In September 2012 he was appointed non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.[17] He took part in the negotiations of signing Lewis Hamilton to a three-year deal with AMG Mercedes.
RUSH movie 2013 the epic action-drama stars CHRIS HEMSWORTH ('The Avengers') as the charismatic Englishman, James Hunt and DANIEL BRÜHL ('Inglourious Basterds') as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.
RUSH movie 2013 - Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, RUSH movie 2013 portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed--handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Copyright Carjam TV 2013. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, RUSH movie 2013 follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.
RUSH movie 2013 is an upcoming 2013 British-American biographical action film directed by Ron Howard and written by Peter Morgan about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, and is due to be released on September 13, 2013.[2] RUSH movie 2013 is scheduled to be shown at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
After a catastrophic crash[5] at the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring that could have killed him, Formula One driver Niki Lauda (Brühl) returns to face his rival James Hunt (Hemsworth) in their pursuit of the 1976 World Championship at Fuji in Japan. RUSH movie 2013

I just saw this movie today and... It was one of the most beautiful stories I had ever seen. This was the story, not about one of the drivers going for glory and fame or even the competition itself, but rather the story of a great friendship that grew out of the seeds of a rivalry. If there was any moral to this story, it is that 'even the most bitter of rivals, can become the best friends.' Brilliant movie, brilliant! :)

Lauda and Hunt were always good friends. They shared an apartment in London as upcoming Formula 3 drivers. At the end of the movie, the last sentences came straight from Niki Lauda. Niki Lauda never had many friends and he never liked many people but he liked James Hunt. While James Hunt was alive, Niki Lauda and James Hunt were great friends. James Hunt may even be the only person Niki Lauda ever really respected and liked.

The movie exaggerated the rivalry a bit; Lauda and Hunt were roommates and close friends throughout their friendly rivalry from f3 to f1. Once when asked, "What it was like, living with Hunt?" Lauda replied "Lots and lots of sex... Not with me of course." while laughing.

Even seeing Lauda old as in this interview, you feel you could put Bruhl there and he would speak the same words and say the same things. Really really good performance.

ozmedia Really? Meh, to each his own. I thought it was his best performance yet. The accent was his natural accent and I'm glad he chose to keep it that way rather than try to imitate the minute details of Hunt's (which could have been disastrous). Sure it makes him sound slightly more Australian than British but it probably made the emotions seem more genuine without having to put on an accent. After watching a few of Hunt's interviews, it seems like Hemsworth did a pretty good job of playing out Hunt's mannerisms as well. I couldn't ask for more. Thoroughly happy the performance(s) and the movie. =)

Niki Lauda is my inspiration! He is a great man. He always lived his life on his own terms. He was a racing champion and after his retirement he formed his Airline Lauda Air. He has a competitive spirit which only a few have. When one of his Airline's plane crashed he somehow got an unused Boeing 767 and inducted it in his fleet. By the way he is also a certified Boeing 767 pilot! I dont give a damn what happened to him at that "day" in Nurbergring . He is is still the greatest F1 driver the world has ever seen. Despite that near fatal crash he was back in track in 42 days and won 2 more championships.!!

@@Mangalex28 Someone always has to bring this up. Here's the thing about Prost vs Senna though, they only really cooled it after 93. Throughout their whole rivalry they acted very badly towards each other, in how they race and the stuff they said about each other. If this hit theaters, we wont look back fondly on them, it was almost dishonorable how they acted. A very different rivalry from what Hunt and Lauda had.

I'm not giving anything away, no spoilers. But those who have seen the movie will know what I mean when I say when they both salute each other before that race, man, that chokes me up. That and the scene right after the press conference, you know what I mean. We guys are such suckers for that stuff. Great flick. So accurate. Everyone did such a great job. There really is a special magic between rivals, enemies who become friends. For those interested in how dangerous it used to be, look up "Grand Prix: The Killer Years". BBC made it. It's a true account of how dangerous Formula 1 used to be. Positively chilling.

I totally agree with everything you say here. I didn't know anything about the true story or the drivers, so there was a lot in the film that really had me on the edge of my seat. I started off with thinking, "Ok Lauda is the bad guy here, we want Hunt to be the victor." But as the film went on, I started to love both of them like they were brothers. When the accident happens, I was actually breathless. I can not say enough great things about this film or the drivers. Lauda is a true badass though. I love him and Hunt for both very different reasons.

Niki was rather the 'responsible' and 'smarter' one, while Hunt was being the cliché of the famous, innocent, naive young race driver of those times. For Niki, the mental challenge must have been a lot harder, since he was far more aware of the dangers of the track. But as said above, they went really well together. I think that being rivals really motivated them to go the extra mile.

Niki Lauda was driving for McLaren in the race and James Hunt is doing commentary for BBC, Hunt mentions that a fan asked him if he thought that Lauda would back out of the race like he did in '76, he said " I told him no, he'll race and he'll race hard."

First time I watched the film it was with flatmates. Had no intention to watch it originally yet I was the one trying hardest to view it whilst the rest made immature comments and talked through it. On second viewing (by myself this time) I finished it with a tear in my eye. Such a brilliant film. Cinematicly amazing great story telling and it flowed perfect. This was a big task and Ron Howard nailed it. As a film and media student I would call this the best sports movie ever! All time film I'd say top 30-40.

Reading through the comments I find it amazing how motor racing fans can judge different racing series and drivers without knowing anything about what or who they are judging. F1 drivers do not have any driver Aids beside power steering, driving a racing car without powersteering especially F1... so much wrong with that. Granted I am not an expert in Indy I will say that I dont find it entertaining, but that doesnt mean I think the teams and drivers are panzies. I respect all racers because it takes balls to push it to those limits no matter the form of racing.

Lauda did the two bravest things in the history of the sport: he got back into the car at Monza, and he got out of the car at Fuji. The next year, 1977, was his last at Ferrari, and I attended his last victory for Ferrari, at Zandvoort, when Hunt and Andretti came together exiting Tarzan . . .

Can't believe it took months for me to decide and watch the movie finally. It would have been worth it to see it in the big screen! Niki Lauda is a badass and the actor Daniel Bruhl who played him was awesome. He deserves awards for this, made me emotionally invested in his character.

Didn't know of Hunt/Lauda in the 70's (too young) but I have a new found respect for them both, the Film was awesome and the rivalry and mutual respect between them was amazing. Sad that Hunt is not around today to see the film. RIP James you were a legend!

+Johnny Midnite Much better than an arrogant behaviour, don't you think? I've seen too many interviews when there's a young interviewer with a legend, and they sometimes take this "I'm not impressed" attitude and they end up acting like fools. At least this "yuppie", as you call him, was respectful.

The movie was so on point with its depiction, just how a movie based on a true story really should be. R.I.P. James Hunt. Would have great to see them sharing a moment for this movie.

Before 'Rush' John Frankenheimer made a film called 'Grand Prix' starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand and Toshiro Mifune as well as a host of actual racers who had small cameos or footage that appeared in the film, such as Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Dan Gurney, Bruce McClaren etc.. It was shot on Super 70mm and was way ahead of its time in terms of technique of filming, locations, etc. Check it out. It's not all about racing, as it involves a love story triangle, etc. And difficulties with the sponsors and the private lives of the racers. But for people who love cars and racing, especially those volatile 60s years of Formula One, 'Grand Prix' is a great film. This film was made during the time Grand Prix formula racing was fast becoming as dangerous as it ever would be. Of course names are changed and race results, for the telling of the fictional story, but they do mirror a lot of what went on in real life. Check it out.

Great movie overall. I knew little about James Hunt unlike Jackie Stewart and Jim Clark who certainly were far more noticeable if we're talking legendary British drivers. Hunt seems to be remembered for his legendary eccentric lifestyle before all.

To be brutally honest, I don't feel James Hunt was being remembered for his driving prowess if not for his playboy lifestyle. Everyone remembers 1976 for Niki Lauda's terrible crash and his incredibly fast return to racing. If it was not for it, there would be very little to tell about that specific year. When you come to consider it Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill have achieved what James Hunt has achieved probably with even more competition for the title. And yet no one would write a movie about Mansell or Hill. James Hunt might not even have been crowned World Champion if it was not for Nikki Lauda's crash as suggested at the end. So I feel this movie is more about the relationship of these two added to the crash and the fact James Hunt happens to be gone. If he was still alive there would be no mystic to that story, as often. Now as far as driving style goes, Stewart and Clark are certainly more famous outside of Great Britain. It still is a great movie, don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it precisely because it's not so much a Formula 1 story as the story of two very different characters driven by the same passion. The car racing part is almost a best supporting actor here.

I've just come from the cinema. My God what a movie. It brought tears to my eyes. So many memories brought back. Niki Lauda and James so well portrayed by the actors. At the end when you see the real ones in the movie, James Hunt gone and Niki Lauda old and sad remembering those days forty years ago. I broke dawn in tears. There are no such man in F1 like James and Niki anymore. They faced death on each race, they were the opposite from one another but they were from a breed gone forever.

Brühl scarred and speaking german was remarkably similar to Niki back in the mid 1970s. I was 16 in 1976, and had been following F1 for 10 years, having seen Niki Lauda arrive in the scene, leave, return, leave, return, and become champion by ½ a point in 1984. This film is a great tribute to one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, and a great man, who would have won many more championships if it wasn't for the madness of F1 back in the 1970s.

Absolute legend. Phenomenal driver and champion who has built no less than two stellar careers after retiring as a driver (a successful airline and a major role in the Mercedes F1 program). Incredible bloke. He showed the world what courage meant when he got back in the car just a few weeks after so nearly dying from horrible and agonising injuries. And he's never lost his bluntness and humour "we'd have had a piss up after the movie". As I say, legend.

He also reformed the drivers association in Monaco after Senna and Ratzenburger's deaths at Imola in 1994. Such an important man in the history of Formula 1.
