Back when drivers could say what they wanted without sounding like uber coached PR wonks. Honesty and speaking from the heart always wins the day. And Mansell and Berger's reactions to Senna is classic. That was the last of the best era in F1.

True he said that, but in Monaco I remind Senna won having behing him Mansell last 3 laps and Mansell was driving 3 seconds (3 SECONDS) faster every lap, I understand it's Monaco but he didn't overtake Senna.

He had enough of Prost's political games when they drove together at Ferrari!

There are several things that stand out about this press conference.... 1) Mansell's moustache. 2) Senna's articulate, well-spoken honesty, and the fact that he's speaking from the heart and holding nothing back, 3) Mansell's moustache 4) Berger's ability to downplay what could've been an horrific accident. 5) The fact that all three drivers are actually giving us some insight and speaking freely, instead of the soundbites and pre-programmed responses we get from drivers in 2019.

It really is but I guess they are both complete hypocrites. Senna vetoed Derek Warwick out of Lotus for 1986 season and Alain Prost from Williams for 1994 season. Mansell in 1992 signed contract with Williams in which he demanded to have guarantees that he will have unconditional support from team, engine supplier and main sponsor over his teammate who won some 5 races in 15 years. But Senna still dares to call Prost a coward and Mansell sitting there and agreeing with everything. Hypocrisy at its absolute finest

@@mgecko2959 Senna did not veto Prost from Williams in 1994. Prost wouldn't race with Senna in 1994 and retired. Piquet vetoed Senna from Brabham for 1984. JPS vetoed Senna from Lotus for 1984 to favour Mansell. According to Alan Henry's book The Turbo Years Prost went to Marlboro to stop Piquet coming to Mclaren for 1988 therefore vetoed him. According to Mansell's Autobiography Prost when to the Ferrari top brass in 1990 in an attempt to get the team centred around him. Prost vetoed Senna from Williams for 1993. All least Derek Warwick agrees with the reasons Senna had him vetoed.

@@mgecko2959 How about reading the first line of you comment again? Mclaren had a choice of two drivers to partner Prost for 1988. This was a stipulation by Honda. Prost did not want Piquet at Mclaren so he vouched for Senna. It's not that complicated for most of us. You don't really have a clue what you're talking about do you? Senna called for Prost's sacking at Monza 1989. Monza 1989 was the race where Honda, sick of Prost's innuendo about underpowered engines, released all the engine telemetry data from both cars to be inspected by experts. The data showed Senna quicker through corners with both cars equal on the straights. Monza 1989 was also the race afterwhich Prost wrote a grovelling letter of apology to Honda and retracted his accusations of underpowered engines. Go read something.

I’ve just read Mansell’s autobiography and what a guy, raced with broken bones, smashed vertebrate, extreme food poisoning. Proper racing driver that had nothing but focus and gave his all. An absolute legend !

Was beaten by Elio De Angelis five years in a row in Lotus. FIVE. Was beaten by Keke Rosberg in Williams 1985, Rosberg made him look like an amateur. Was beaten by injured Piquet in Williams 1987. Was totally demolished by Prost in Ferrari 1990. He wasn't as good as many people think. Always driving the absolute top cars.

@@Roger__Wilco Look at his stats yourself. It's not cherry picking. I loved how Mansell drove. Fast, furious hothead. But he lost to almost all of his teammates. Patrese was an exception. Mansell always spoke quite respectively about Senna even after races where they made contact and Senna was blocking him aggressively, same with Senna, he never spoke bad about Mansell either. This despite the fact that Mansell was quite easily upset and got his feelings hurt as Murray Walker explained in the beyond the grid podcast.

Most of all i love Mansell nodding and Berger laughing at the end of his answer. Those were good times for motorsport

+Cory Baxter Mansel and Senna yes, but Prost and Senna never. Senna loathed Prost and everything he stood for, he often bit his tongue just to be civil, but they were never friends. I found it disrespectful that Prost tried to make out they were friends when Senna died. Prost was an out and out prick to Senna throughout their driving careers, then once Senna dies he tries to make out they were buddies. Further proof that Prost has no morals.

Senna respected Prost, he obsessed about beating him because he knew Prost was the best, that's why he suddenly felt a certain emptiness when Prost quit. +John19501000 Prost was better than Lauda in both 1984 and 1985 and they were given equal treatment, As Rosberg said himself "Prost was the best driver I ever raced against and he was bloody quick." The fact is Rosberg got a surprise at how good Prost was. Just as Prost was much better than Mansell. Senna was closer better than Mansell and closer to Prost but Senna always got the best car and preferential treatment.

I like the fact Senna for literally no reason just pushes/punches something off the table at the end 😂😂😂

Everyone seems or likes to forget this. He ruined a driver's entire career because he saw them as a threat to win. He tried the same thing with McLaren and was not able to do it. He had no problems with drivers post Prost because they assumed the role of a second driver

That was pure Senna, watery eyes and making himself look like a victim where he was first to screw his teammate in any way he possibly could. Vetoing other drivers from the team, breaking agreements, sending engine suppliers to team principal and even plotting with engine supplier against his teammate so he is disadvantaged in the race. Mansell or Senna would have splited the Williams points in 1993, and knowing how stong McLaren and Ferrari were back then; having only one top pilot (Prost) was the safest choice.

@@Scott-bh2qb Stefan Bellof in the weak Tyrrell-Ford without Turbo-Engine was much better in Monaco rain-race 1984 than Senna. And Jackie Stewart said, he never saw a more talented driver than Stefan Bellof - and Sir Jackie saw them all !!! And Max is definitely faster than Senna and is also a rainmaster with several wins in rain-races.

TheSemtew1977 - It’s not the same car every year. You build new cars every year and work on it till you get it right. Prost was the reason why McLaren stayed on top from 1984 to 1991. Notice that McLaren’s dominance only lasted 2 years after Prost left. Senna could drive fast no matter what he had but he just wasn’t any good at developing cars.

The Williams F1 team were pioneers in developing active suspension in their F1 cars and that with the genius of Adrian Newey and the Renault V10, gained a substantial benefit / advantage in 1992 and 1993. Whether Prost developed the 1993 or not is beside the point as Prost knew with great certainty the 1993 Williams would be a class above the rest, which is why he signed. I think you are completely missing the point of my original post. Due to the politics of formula 1, fans were denied a sporting contest between two greats in the same car fighting for the championship. It would be another 15 years (Fernando Alonso and the rookie Lewis Hamiltion , both in the Mclaren Mercedes) until we would witness a titanic scrap between team mates fighting for a championship.

Senna didn't want to race Warwick in 1996, so Lotus took Dumfries. Also, confirmed that he had better support from Honda during Prost years. And now he criticizes Prost for what he did in the past. Example of duplicity.

Oh they agreed alright, Prost showed the world how much better he was than Mansell at Ferrari, and Berger was Senna's BFF. Hardly a surprise these two were on team Senna here.

@PortgazDAce89 oh he definitely did. Prost pushed Ferrari 1990 to have himself completely number 1 and it worked. Mansell was possibly the outright faster driver between the two, but didn't take testing seriously and didn't have the team building personality Ferrari wanted. Prost was far far superior at setting up the cars.

Senna vetoed when Derek Warwick was coming to Lotus. Senna didn't accept and they took Johnny Dumfries instead. Prost is the only F1 driver in history who beat five world champion teammates. K.Rosberg, Lauda, Senna, Mansell and Hill. It's quite ridiculous that he was afraid to have a decent teammate. No one else in history has such list of teammates, not even close.

You didn’t mention piquet. They were in F1 around the same time. Piquet won 81, 83, and 87. Prost won 4 in between then. Senna 3. Prost was indeed the best driver of that era but people argue that Senna was better because he literally drove like a kamikaze. He was all in. That was his gift and ultimate undoing and why Prost won 4 due to being ballsy but careful. You have to give credit is due and Prost piquet and senna and Mansell all fought and won very hard battles. Back in an era where death was a constant presence

I normally hate hearing people talk about being alpha and whatnot, but goddamn Senna’s confidence and ability to speak truth to power is just an inspiring thing to see. To justifiably call a man out as a coward in a live press conference amongst his peers, definitely requires a certain level of “testicular fortitude”.

Doubtless had Senna been the first to clinch that Williams drive in 1993 he too would have asked for a first driver clause.

I think he still is.

Ayrton always ensured that all the variables were loaded in his favour. Hence he ensured team-mates were as weak as possibloe - hence Dumfries and Nakajima - Moving to Mclaren Prost was already there, but once there Ayrton set about undermining Alain as much as possible - in Ayrton's words he wanted to 'destroy' Prost. Ayrton didn;t take kindly to drivers who could beat him and back then Warwick was a hot prospect.

Spot on - but another factor was Senna having an existing relationship with Honda - which joined McLaren at the same time he did. Honda's technical staff had a strong preference for Senna over Prost - and that tainted much of what happened when they drove for the same team. So not all on Senna IMHO - Honda and some of the leadership at McLaren share the blame. Still - anyone should understand why Prost would not want to be teammates with Senna again and he asked for it in his contract. Williams granted it. Senna was too smart to be critical of Frank Williams because he wanted to drive for him - so he took his shots on the situation at Prost. Which I get....but he still sounded like a whiner. LoL Think about Hamilton and Verstappen being teammates - no way that works.

I wish we could have had Senna and Mansell on the same team sometime. That would have just been clean, hard racing, with no politics. They had some run-ins on the track, but they never let it get personal.

Johannes LaCroix Mansell and Senna could have been teammates because all they cared about was racing. They would have had dust-ups as teammates, but they would have been about racing, not politics. Prost got into power struggles everywhere he went, and used his "French connection" with FISA to gain an edge. He even manipulated the fact he knew Renault and Elf wanted a French driver to get a veto on Senna at Williams in '93. Don't get me wrong, all's fair in love and war. But Prost was a terrible teammate to have if you were a top driver. If there had been any justice, he would have stumbled into a team with Nelson Piquet as the other driver at some point--they'd have killed each other!

+John Cate Bullshit! Just because they are tag teaming on Prost in this interview doesn't mean squat. Mansell and Senna hated each other, almost coming to blows several times. Everyone seemed to have a problem with SENNA, not the other way around. Jackie Stewart even rates Prost above Senna as far as being a complete racing driver.

Double standards from Senna as he blocked Warwick from being his teammate at Lotus. And after Prost smashed Mansell in the same car in 1990 obviously he didn’t want Prost in the same team so he went to Indycar

Senna was not only a great driver, he was also a truly great man with outstanding character and integrity. In every interview and with everything he says, it shines through. It boggles the mind to think what else he would have accomplished both on and off the track, if not for that terribly unlucky crash that took his life.

It isn’t really explained in the video or in the description. I looked it up and what happened is when Alain signed with Williams (the faster team), the contract was written such that they couldn’t bring on Ayrton to the team that same year. Ayrton wanted to go to Williams as they were faster than McLaren.

Such a calming voice Mansell has.

Can we go back to this?!?! What an amazing interview with all 3 of them , that’s how I fell in love with f1 , what we got into today it’s the reason I lost that feeling

@@chuckyboy6977 I'll take first kick of the tin. When ever this subject comes up in the Motorsport press, Fangio and Senna usually appear in the top 2 or 3. When they both say Clark was the best, you really have to consider it. Having followed F1 for more than 55 years, I've seen a few good un's. Bellof, Ickx and Beltoise great in the wet. Senna, Peterson blisteringly quick, Prost and his teacher Lauda the clever men. For me, the 60's were the days. They'd race F1, F2 and saloons on the same day. For me, Clark was the best, but that's just my opinion. The thing with opinions is that they are like backsides. Everyone has one, just not everyone likes yours 😁😁

Thanks for posting. And it's tragic how now honesty - let alone sincerity - is the last thing we'd expect at a press conference. And to think of competitors supporting each other when they speak out. Wow. I miss this so much.

Turbo's were just coming in but with mega lag on low revs (hens the Senna's on/off throttle style through his career). Keke was the last champ (82) that with N.A.E Cosworth DFV (variant).. My ears used to ring for years cause not using ear protection when rehearsing and doing gigs and couldn't get any sleep back then. It miraculously went away and felt like a new man for ~10 years. At least for sleeping wize :D

But also remember that Senna drove his Mclaren to the very limits - Jo Ramirez said that Senna's car was virtually wrecked after a race, while Prost's was as good as new - Ayrton had to drive like that just to keep up with Prost. Imagine if Prost had driven on the edge!!! Many drivers better than Prost at that time? Name one...... and Senna was NOT an egomaniac??

I really liked the relationship between Senna and Mansell. Fierce and passionate competitors on the track who gave no margin, but respectful of each other and comrades as drivers.
