Lauda was cynical in racing and in business for family matters (his grandfather in particular, born in the Habsburg era). He tried to prove that his idea was not wrong, and this necessitated, in an age where people died easily on the slopes, to avoid unnecessary weaknesses. He was unpleasant even in the Ferrari team, for the fussiness at work (he was the new figure of the pilot-mechanic specialized) but outside he was pleasant and sociable, as a gentleman of the very high Austrian bourgeoisie can be.

Lauda was, for me, somewhat of a superhero-being when I grew up considering the unimaginable pain he endured and the recovery he made. As I grew up and moved into adulthood, my respect and admiration for him only grew. He was a remarkable man, as was Hunt, and I remember them like many others as true legends of their sport.

When he spoke if James death, man he seemed sad. The movie portrayed near to zero love but wow...thats rivalry that held true love and admiration for each other. He wanted him back on his feet and happy which happened. The impact they had on each other to push through it all was unreal. 2 legends gone but enjoying each other company again I hope.

I remember watching the race on TV with my dad when he had his incident at Nurburgring in 76. Took a long time for the announcer to tell what had happened. And even knowing he was not my dad's favorite driver at the time. He gained so much respect for getting back in a car and race the way he did. A true legend at part with Sir Jackie Steward, Fittipaldi, Andretti, and many more.

The enjoyable fiction of Lauda vs Hunt in Rush is just that. James was a good racing driver, and his championship was hard won, but Niki is a legend. A legend who, had it not been for _the_ crash, almost definitely would have won the title. James won the title by one point from Niki, who missed two races.

Saw the movie, watched some back videos, but gleaned more in these few minutes about their relationship than I would have thought. For those who have seen Band of Brothers, it reminds of Winters and Nixon. Two qualified, intelligent, and capable comrades who did their jobs equally well, but with almost diametrically opposite approaches. Yet there was mutual respect and admiration, and friendship. Didn’t realize that was possible until I got old, and appreciate it to this day.
