Not, throw. Face the Music - very worthy plate. And hit Evel woman has entered in top Britain and US. On me - A new record - is weaker, or too brushed, whether that. Kell's vocal достоин, but I am inclined to imagine on its seat of the Plenty of Wood)). Well it only my opinion. We we love ELO, and unless it is necessary more?

Such a fantastic song. Brings me right back to high school. I love Kelly Groucutt’s supporting vocals here.

This show was televised 2 months before my HS graduation, am now 65. Seems like yesterday!

Jeff & Kelly were so good together...Jeff picked a winner in Kelly !

I just bought Face The Music on CD. I hadn't listened to the album for 45 years. I bought the vinyl record back in 1976.

Can you imagine an audience now sitting that still for a quiet ending like that?

Kelly was so underrated. Absolutely beautiful live performance. Jeff was such a pop craftsman.

ELO in their heyday were superb (& they're still going today!)

Had the very same thought. I guess I assumed it was mostly Jeff in a higher register, but no. This album was always Jeff's masterpiece, imho. 👍

Yet another of my all time favorites on Midnight Special, ELO! Jeff of course is very distinctive in his vocals, but I believe Kelly was overlooked. What truly made Midnight Special such a standout is the wide array of genres they showcased. I truly love music, and Midnight Special was my my musical heart.

Bad hair?! How dare you. I sported that same ‘do Jeff Lynne has here when I was in high school. Sure, I was called “poodle” and “birds nest” a lot, but I would kill to have it all back! (the hair, that is. The sunglasses are simply gravy)

My one time seeing ELO was just after this, Sept ‘76. A New World’s Record came out just after. They were touring with a killer laser light show which we hadn’t ever seen before. One of my Top Ten concerts ever.

I got to see elo 15 x from on the third day tour...thru.. time tour ...spaceship tour (out of the blue) saw 2x once in Detroit once in Cleveland....we were young...

This is about as far as you can get from the generic, formulaic crap that is so prevalent today. This is real music.

Nightrider’s chorus with Jeff & Kelly’s “call and response” vocals is perhaps my favorite example of their vocal blend in the ELO catalog. Although it does seem they either boosted or double-tracked their chorus vocals in the studio in post-production here, and Kelly’s “singalong” with the outro riff (like at 3:25) was definitely added in post-production.

Epic ELO as always! Jeff started to wear sunglasses on the 1976-1977 world tour. From1972 to 1976 (with ELO) he didn't wear sunglasses on stage or in music videos.

Actually, Jeff did wear them in those early years, albeit occasionally. Check out their performance of, "Kuima", on The Midnight Special from 1973, and you'll find Jeff wearing sunglasses. A bit lighter in tint than the ones from later years, but sunglasses nonetheless. It's on KZread.

I think he did it on purpose not to offend anyone...Nobody ever sees a girl. You know just like today, there were some twisted minds back then. But i agree with you, just stick to the original lyrics. Outstanding performance❤ This song should have been a top 40 on the charts...I never understood why it was not a major hit.

I must have seen this episode before I heard Face the Music. Because I remember Evil Woman and Strange Magic but not this. Yet when I heard the album, Nightrider was the first song that introduced me to the concept of album tracks being as good as - if not better than - the singles.

That might've been Jake Commander who played with ELO live offstage, doing guitar and vocal work. I dunno why they didn't just let him perform onstage with them.

ELO has always been the best act on Midnight Special. Jeff Lynne's ELO will be in concert in San Diego in November 2023 BTW. Long live Jeff Lynne!
