ELO caught my ear in the 7th grade and I still listen to them 50 years later. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius and they were way ahead of their time with this song. I saw them in concert in 2019 and it was unbelievable, if you can see them you must.

Just beautifully sad. Amazing, haunting. Bloody fantastic. When i tell friends to listen to other ELO stuff they think its all 'hold on tight' ' mr blue sky ' etc . I think they would be pleasantly surprised to hear ELOs early stuff.

Most underrated song they did. Ultimate classic so early on. Digs deep into the emotions. Full length version puts tingles up your spine. First time I’ve ever seen this. Been a fan for 45 years.

@@romelovesdan...but Kelly had a perm! Oh, really! I have seen a video of his first appearances with E.L.O and his hair was straight!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣! Check it out on KZread by searching for "ELO - Laredo Tornado Live 1974 Stereo Remaster", lol! I think it's a Rockpalast concert, but I'm not sure about that. (I'll try to put the link here. If that's not possible, you can search for it by that title) and then...tell me what you think please... hahahaha! I think Kelly was trying to transform into Jeff Lynne day by day...he even continues touring with the same songs and under the name E.L.O Part II...🤔🤨🧐😆😆😆! (Sounds like a movie plot: (should be read in a deep and suspenseful voice...): "A man who lives forever under the shadow of a famous genius... the eternal "one step from glory"... the story of a friendship turned obsession, a rivalry as raw as real life...the drama of a "non-solo" musician... The story of an impossible dream...From the creator of "please, this is just my opinion, do not kill me" and "my apologies, don't want to be intrusive with my comment", coming soon on Netflix "I SHOULD BE YOU", this summer the perm will rule the world..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sorry, Kelly's talented, he has a very good voice and I find him charming, but I can't help feeling that he was always in the shadow of a genius, I don't know why I have this feeling...first was the perm, later the same platform shoes that Jeff used to wear, the blue clothes like Jeff at the grammys... most likely it was Jeff himself or the manager who suggested those makeovers but knowing the rivalry that Kelly showed at the end... my paranoia seems so much funny to me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 My respects to him, always!🙌🙌🙌💖💖💖 Well... the real thing is that Kelly contributed a lot to the band and this is what's important. Greetings from Spain!!!! (Seriously, I loved your comment, hahahaha). Have a beautiful summer!!!!🛸🚀🎶🎵!!!! Here you are: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKmMqM6clNGxmso.html

Kuiama tells the tale of a soldier who has found an orphan girl (Named Kuiama) wandering the ruins of a battle-ravaged village in the Vietnam war. The soldier is trying to comfort the girl and also to explain how he was the one who killed her parents. Despite a few lyrics which might you think the song is about WWI ( as pretended by some fans) Kuiama is really about the Vietnam war said Bev Bevan in 1973.

As a lifelong E.L.O. enthusiast I have always loved Kuiama. Thank you Jonathan C for those high school lunch breaks spent at your house during the late 70s, early 80s, a short walk through the school gates when you would fire up the vinyl and the melodic almost psychedelic E.L.O. sound would fill the room. Those lunch times were never long enough 🙏😊👍❤️

First of all: Thank you, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I just discovered this video and I must say that this channel has made me SUPER HAPPY!!!!! I have FELL IN LOVE WITH the Electric Light Orchestra when I was 8 years old, and at the time I thought I couldn't fall in love with a band as much as I did with The Beatles and Queen. But one day I discovered one E.L.O's album ignoring what kind of treasure it was. "El Dorado" fell into my hands and when that tremendous musical introduction of vertiginous musical notes began to play gloriously spilling through my childish brain, falling like a musical waterfall, so, so, heavenly powerful...those solemn chords exploding in my ears like fireworks full of fantasy and sonic magnificence! I was in a trance!...in I knew at that moment that the Electric Light Orchestra would be something very important to me: I started to be nicely obsessed of E.L.O's sound!! (It's absolutely true so that the novel I'm writing begins with that moment, and all the chapters are related to an E.L.O song, the main plot starts discovering E.L.O) Then Jeff Lynne became my crush, ranked one! totally unseated River Phoenix...hahahaha, I was born in 1978, River was an idol for my generation... 😅. (And... sadly I must say Jeff is the only crush on my list still alive...🤔🤨🧐😬😑😐😶😞). I suppose it has become clear how happy I am at this moment after watching this video, right? And it's thanks to this channel... Ok, if it's not too much trouble, please... no, PLEASE: POST MORE E.L.O's VIDEOS!!!!! I beg you not to stop uploading this type of footage of this wonderful band led by the genius from Birmingham, because with that gesture you will make me the happiest woman in the world.💖 An affectionate greeting from Spain!!🖖🙃 And again: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖✨💫🌠 (Oh... Electric Light Orchestra... when I listen to their records I know that human beings are capable of doing wonders and giving their best, and when that happens the world is just perfect...🛸🚀...) P.s: My apologies for this long message and for my English, it is not my usual language.. Saludos y muchas gracias!!!

@@PaulOutdoors I think I'm going to answer your comment with total honesty at the risk of being very tedious: (please, Paula...my apologies first of all) LOVE your comment!!!🙌💖 E.L.O is not only one of the most legendary and authentic bands I've ever heard, but they also have the healthiest and friendliest fan community in rock history. I have never read a single unkind or inappropriate comment on a post about E.L.O, you know, people not being nice to each other... not even on Twitter! Hahahahaha...(No...seriously: that's a terrible thing! we know that Twitter is a kind of very dangerous jungle where someone can be rude when you least expect it...) Now I'm thinking about the lyrics of the beautiful song from "Hair", the musical: "Easy To Be Hard"...🤔🤨🧐. The lyrics could perfectly describe how people behave on social media because it's easy to be nasty behind a name. It's "so funny to be a real coward" and hurt somebody just for nothing. and then they are very supportive of all the noble causes in the world because social networks are a kind of showcase where we all show what we want to pretend, whether we are or not... inconsistencies of the human being... I'm so glad this is not the case. (Easy:🛸🚀🎶🎵=💖) Well... I prefer the positive side of social networks and I have to say it's nice to meet you, (although I feel a bit of envy, Paula... healthy envy of course! hahahaha), wooow... Surely you were able to enjoy the Electric Light Orchestra's concerts! Really???...this is something that I would have loved to see and that I can only imagine thanks to videos as wonderful as this one. Thank you very much for responding to my comment, it is a real pleasure to exchange a few words with people like you capable of appreciating good music and who preserve the memory of bands as mythical as this one. It's a real shame to live in these times when culture seems to be in a kind of coma... I have the sad feeling that we are running out of talent, orphans of good music, or that we are going through days of musical poverty, all musical proposals are clones! It's like "artists" (this is just another concept we should think about with the possibility of changing the meaning of what "an artist" is, maybe it's not what I think it is🤔🤨🧐...) they are all using a formula or a recipe when new or main "artists" record their albums and that's why everything sounds the same thing. I'm not able to recognize who is singing! I can not appreciate a piece of personality in a lot of voices... But sure, I'm generalizing and maybe it's not fair to those who resist and make quality music, I have to admit it, but (it's just my opinion, and I express it with all respect and humility: I'm a musician but I don't earn life with that, I shouldn't criticize those who have!) but I can speak, as a consumer and as a music lover I am concerned: are we at a point of no return where good music is just a relic of the past? I am sure that in the 70s, (you will know better than me!) even the simplest and most commercial song in the world, next to what is now considered "mainstream music", is a piece up to Beethoven!!! Oh dear Lord... I don't want to contradict you but, don't you think you made me born too late...? hey, my God?...hahahahaha. I'm so sorry I'm stealing your time too much! ...but it's very hard to be brief when I read a comment like yours!!... Using the words of John Miles's song: "music was my first love and it will be my last... music (not sure) of the future and music (of course and always!!) of the past" hahahaha😆😆😆😆😅😅😅😅... and E.L.Owas and will be the soundtrack of my whole life, that's why (sorry, I have to express it in my language): "mi entusiasmo siempre es más poderoso que las actitudes protocolarias. Mi máscara cae ante mis iguales en sentimientos... y tú, que sientes lo mismo que yo...cómo podría mentirte? He asumido el riesgo a resultarte tediosa en pos de aquello que nos une🥲"... Thank you very, very much again for your kind comment (and your patience if you could get here!!!!). Take care, it's very important because this world needs more E.L.O's fellows fans!!! ("E.L.O's fellows! I love it! Phonetically it sound to my Spanish ear like a Donovan's song, "Mellow Yellow"!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Well, Paula, muchas gracias! Long live Jeff Lynne!!!! (and you, of course). Greetings from Valencia, Spain, and have a beautiful summer wherever you are!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✨✨✨✨💖💖💖💖💖

A soldier tries to explain to a little girl that he has killed her parents. My, my Kuiama, she came in the morning She smiled but the tears on her little face Showed the pain that had been in that far-off place So sad, treated so bad My, my Kuiama, don't break your heart tryin' To say how your ma and your pa passed away And they left you to wander the ruin and decay Real mean, that bullet machine See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles Is a long, long way and you're here today And you won't go back so you might say "Hello, how do you do?" Kuia, stop your cryin', there's no bombs a-fallin' No horsemen in the night a-ridin' Through your dreams and tearing at your life Baby, goodnight No more silver rain will hit your ground And no more guns will sound No more life be drowned No more trenches where the soldiers lie And no more people die Beneath that big black sky Wake up, Kuiama, I got somethin' to tell you It's just that I mean, well, that is to say That I'm trying to explain but I'll start again For you, I must be true Kuia, in this country, they got rules with no reason They teach you to kill and they send you away With your gun in your hand, you pick up your pay So cool, that no mercy tool Kuia, please believe me, I just couldn't help myself I wanted to run but they gave me a gun And they told me the duty I owed to my fatherland I made my stand Kuia, I just shot them, I just blew their heads open And I heard them scream in their agony Kuiama, she waits there for me True blue, you saw it through

I think they started as 100% live but at some point gave in and started using backing tracks if not full on lip syncing for whatever reason. A good example is there are two versions of Blondie singing Heart of Glass, one is definitely live (she gives an anti-nuclear speech in the middle) and the other is very obviously lip synced and sounds completely different from the live version.

This is vintage, real ELO as a band. This is their true sound before Disco contaminated their songs. BTW, where was the lead guitar??? We hear it but its not on stage. Backstage? I doubt that in those times they were using prerecorded parts.

This appearance of the ELO on TV is not live... The music is playback, and the voices are live... This was very normal at that time and the ELO did it this way many times... playback music and live voices singing over the pre-recorded music... Isn't it clear that the music is an edited version of the original studio recording? Isn't it noticeable that you don't see everything you need to have when playing live, such as microphones on the drums, monitors and wiring that is needed when playing live? There are no monitors, there are no microphones in the amps, etc., etc. friends is clearly a playback performance and the ELO did this many times on television.. There is no need to despair about that.

ELO always plays live on all tours.. A performance on TV is different, and they did not always play live, as in this case the music is playback and the voice is live... Lynne sings over the pre-recorded music... and of course he also played live on tours after 1977. On the 1978 tour they simply used backing tapes to complement what the group DID PLAY LIVE.. Those support tapes were only from the orchestra and choir section and some supporting voices.. the rest of the music was live... Lynne's guitar was live... Bevan's drums were live... Kelly's bass was live Tandy's keyboards were live (except those orchestral sections and choruses and vocoder which were pre-recorded support tapes) Mik's violin, Hugh and Melvin's chellos were live added to those pre-recorded support tapes of the orchestral section already mentioned) Also on the 1978 tour they had an 8th live member who was the monitor technician Jake Commander, who from his position behind the monitor console supported the group by playing 2nd guitar and backing vocals.. It's not a secret or anything unknown, there are many bootlegs from the 1978 tour and the 1981-82 tour that you can hear perfectly, it's all live

You need to hear this song in it’s full length version to understand why this performance isn’t the best: The original album version is around 11 minutes long and is an anti-war song from the point of view of a soldier who was having to explain to his girl what he was going through.
