    In 1977 I called into a local radio station to make a request. As it turn out I just happened to call at the right time and won 4 tickets to see ELO. By accident. I tried selling them to make a few bucks and got no takers. The night of the show. I gave 1 away and a decided to go with a couple of friends with the remaining 3 tickets. It was hands down one of the best concerts I have ever attended! And I have seen some big bad mammer jammers. From Aerosmith to Zeppelin. ELO was the real deal. Long live RNR!

    +dedeo8957: Fine post, Dadeo. Well done. I'm 70 at the end of '24. Which means like you, I grew up seeing tons of bad-ass arena shows....starting in high school in '71 (Alice Cooper) (one of THE BEST I"VE EVER SEEN). SO glad to be a strong-azz Boomer....still diggin' this kind of music. Not afraid to crank it up, either. jbeinarizona

    There are plenty of other examples throughout the show’s run but thankfully the live performances outnumber the lip synced ones. I’ve watched the guitar solo on this one a few times now and compared it with the studio recording. I kinda feel like that part might be live. That’s been done before on MS too… I remember REO doing a song where the main vocals were live but everything else was a track. Slightly more realism, but still a cop out.

    Why are they miming? I've seen clips from other music shows of the era and they performed the song perfectly.

  • @CrandMackerel

    @CrandMackerel

    Ай бұрын

    I think it's because Jeff knew they'd come across better if given the option to mime to the recording. You can't open mic the strings with the stage volume the drums and guitars would generate, and pickup technology was severely lacking back then. There's also the fact that almost all of the background vocals are overdubbed Jeff Lynne. Other voices singing those backup lines just wouldn't sound tight. Compare this, also from 1974: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6NrmKaCg8feZ9Y.html

  • Ай бұрын

    @@CrandMackerel It was the show's producers who decided those things, not the band/performer. They performed live on MS many times.

    I spotted it from the beginning because Jeff Lynn's mouth is too far from the mic for his voice to be projecting like it appears to do. His voice also has too much studio echo effects to be live. The entire arrangement is a precise replica of the studio version. I came into the comments to see if anybody else noticed the lip-synch

    I had a really odd experience having seen them at MSG on 2 consecutive tours. I love Jeff and like a lot of us back then went to as many concerts as possible. Tickets were from $5 - $8 in 1970s. It must've been touring either the 'Face The Music' or 'A New World Order' (whatever was just before 'Out of The Blue') and it sounded like a turd. Sometimes bands sound completely different live but this was like a High School Marching Band. Only Jeff + Kelly Crocutt did vocals and instead of rich layers of vocals it was more 'A cappella' or 'Unplugged' before it was invented. The next tour was with the Space Ship and that show was PHENOMENAL and what you exoected from ELO. Then weeks later I read a tiny blurb in the paper said Detroit's Cobo Hall was suing ELO's management for using pre-recorded bits for their show but I saw 2 tours - WITH + WITHOUT and WITH WAS A MUCH BETTER ALL AROUND SHOW

    I like the strings. I think they are playing what might be called “Native American scales” although that might not be the correct name. I vaguely remember a Styx song doing the same although I’m at a loss for which song. (I had to look it up. I think it’s called a “minor pentatonic scale” which players today use five notes per octave although the original scale was six notes, a long time ago. I believe there are some Asian scales with five notes per octave that gives the music a unique sound. Think “Train to Bangkok” I think it’s called by Rush. Anyways the minor pentatonic is I think related to the Western minor supposedly. I should’ve listened more in music class.)

    It’s funny because ELO is also a scale for comparing players in zero-sum games. It’s pretty common in chess. I don’t know if the term came about before or after ELO the band though. But I think Magnus Carlson maybe has or had the highest ELO rating ever in chess. But whenever I see or hear the band ELO I always think of chess. “You go, Magnus!” although he doesn’t really need a cheering section as I think he drew Kasparov when Magnus was around 12 years old or so and was probably the youngest World Champion ever, I think at around 21 maybe.
