Nienke Brinkman (NN Running Team) - Threshold Session in Kenya

Dutch distance running talent Nienke Brinkman ran a 2:26:34 Marathon debut at the Valencia Marathon 2021 after conquering the trails over the previous few years.
Nienke wishes to improve on her 2:26 debut at a Marathon this April (you'll find out which one soon) and we joined her for one of her first hard workouts during her altitude training camp in Kenya.
The workout: 3 x 15min efforts at Threshold with 3min recovery at 2200m (7200ft) elevation. It's Nienke's first time training at altitude and it's important to factor this into the splits/paces of the workout as it's probably around 10sec/km slower than at sea level for someone like Nienke.

She’s so frustratingly talented. She literally just started running like 2 years ago after being a field hockey player. A year later she won some EXTREMELY high level trail races in Europe and now 2:26 marathon 🤯. I mean this all is a good way, she’s awesome! But that must be cool to stumble into being world level at something

11:50 In this example, the glucose crash occurred when insulin and non-insulin pathways were working at the same time. Glut4 activates by a hormone called insulin, but it also activates without insulin if the muscles are contracting. She started her run and all that sugar was sucked up like a sponge.

She have done it 2h22'56" national record, insane progression! If she do the golden trail series this year, I must expect her to fight with Maude Mathys and to beat her if she have improved her uphill and specially downhill skills.

@@CyrrusNL Yes in the trail world she will be unbeatable for a long time, for me she is on an other level. I just hope she will stay a bit on trail in the future years and not focus only on her Olympic marathon dream.

@@colios137 It'll be interesting, to say the least. She has true road race elite-level speed. That sets her apart from every other elite trail runner out there, men and women. Just look at Jim Walmsey's attempt at the US Olympic Trials. She is of course untested at the ultra formats. I have no idea if she has any ambitions in that field. Runners like Courtney Dauwalter are a whole different breed again, but she's certainly set to shake up the trail running world.

Nice to see an athlete like Nienke embracing new technology. Btw the excercise induced drop in glucose is something normal you expect to happen. Thats why warming up before such an excercise is also important. The curve later looks rather good 😎

Why is warming up related to blood glucose levels? Wouldnt it just use up more energy?

@@jbri1 Warming up starts liver (glycogen storage) to pour glucose in blood, so it makes the readings more even. Also warming up you shouldn't be depleting a lot of glucose since it's mostly not the fuel used for easy efforts. Sorry for grammar.

@@jbri1 She is using the supersapiens. She had a rise in levels before workout maybe because of some sipps of maurten? When you start excercising your muscles start to use up that free glucose and until the new produced glucose from the liver arrives at the sensor you have this drop. Its also due to how the sensor measures. Anyway everybody has different body and reactions so she is doing the right thing collecting data first and then analyzing how she reacts to different fueling modalities
