New TMJ Exercises - Do jaw exercises make you yawn?

If you ever suffered mild to severe mandibular function impairment, which means you couldn't bring your mouth apart well enough... that means less than 1.2 inches (35 millimetres), then you know the kind of trouble this can be. I feel you, and I hope I have a great, alternative set of exercises for you with this movement sequence. Here are some exercises that are as effective as they are gentle.
However, this movement sequence is not just to solve problems. It's an excellent sequence for mindfulness, movement meditation, or general improvement of jaw function and brain function. Most of all, let yourself be inspired to experiment and nourish yourself, in a loving, playful way.

Thank You!!!! Before lesson my lower Left side hinge on jaw was nearly 1 inch lower than Right side. After lesson Left side is same as Right side. TMJ is a daily aggravation for me. I really appreciate your lesson👍🥰

wuuuuh, incredible sequence! Been struggling with TMJ, pelvic floor issues and forward posture and this brought so much more awareness and integration. Firstly, I was surprised how poor my tongue sensing was at first. Secondly, the head through the elbow hole brought such a wonderful, potent yet gentle stretch through the jaw and the whole side of the body. And thirdly, wow, the integration of the pelvic tilt really did it! the holistic awareness at the end , first time that i really deeply felt the link of the pelvic position to how the weight of my feet shifts and how that shifts the jaw, neck , chest position. Thank you!!

I've had a fair lot of jaw instability, tmj, it was quite bad tonight, hard to open: after this lesson I am hardly aware of it! Thanks to you and see you in the next ...

Alfons, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I’m addicted to rearranging and reorganizing my body with your genius lessons!! I had no idea what TMJ was, but I’ve already done this session twice and now my neck moves more comfortably. I’ve done it a 3rd time and it gets better and better, I’ve paid more attention to some details and have added your breathing tips from another video to the pelvis clock in the depression and elevation section. The head under the bridge part? amazing!!

Genius one Alfons!!! So many pops as I moved my jaw to the right and so much more effort to slide the tongue to the right. My right ear surprisingly feels more open and where I see the most difference. Thanks for continuing to share your knowledge for free. So very kind of you 🙏

Hi Alfons! I've followed you for many years as well as been going to Feldenkreis lessons in town. Now I've decided to try to work to improve my tinnitus (which is really high in pitch and volume). Found these interensting exercises. Look forward to working with it. Even when I only move my tounge my tinnitus noice will change. I hope to find some relief with your class here. Keep up your excellent work! Greetings from Sweden!

Dear Carina! Lovely to read from you, thank you for your support 🙏❤️ About the Tinnitus, I can relate 🫣 I got the high pitch the first time a few years ago, when I took Diclofenac for some pain issue. Or at least at around that time it started, whatever the real cause was. It’s quite a miracle to me. I also can have episodes with bad posture or posture change, but most notably with diet. Some people “feel” the weather, I “hear” highly processed sugary food 😅🫣🙈 I hope my videos are helpful for your own explorations and discoveries, best greetings! Alfons

What a wonderful sequence. My entire cranium feels so nice. Just nice, and comfortable. The last sequence I think I'll explore in combination with the self massage one, that movement really loosened the area between my shoulders at the nape of the neck, I was able to create so much space I've never been able to before.

Hello Alfons, I'm Chinese. I have suffered from TMD(Temporomandibular Disorder, I googled it.😅) since two years ago. At that time, I couldn’t open my mouth big enough to eat an apple and it was so painful on my right side. It took me one or two months to treat it with traditional Chinese medicine, even drugs. After watching some Feldenkrais videos, of course, lots of yours, I find it’s just my jaw is too nervous, so I start to learn how to relax my face. Recently, I feel that the muscles around my nose are uncomfortable, maybe it is related to the TMD, or maybe I use my eyes too much on the screen. I know, the eyes, jaws, lips, they all live on “the head island”, they are all connected.😉 Your lessons are the sunshine!!! I feel my jaw is free, my breathing is better than before and the muscles around my nose are more comfortable. Thanks so much!!!! Hope you have a nice week and good luck!!!🥰

After doing the sequence the first time I kept yawning too much. Repeating the sequence calmed everything to a comfortable level. Thnx for doing this, Alfons.

I would think that yawning is a good thing, and that it's great you repeated the sequence to see what changes the second time will bring about! There seems to be not too much science about yawning, but you will find a lot by googling "yawn benefits". It's quite fascinating, actually. 😊 Thank you for your comment, Sylvia

Would feldenkrais help with dental occlusion? My bite is way off and they want me to spend thousands on appliances and tooth work ie, changing crowns etc. Nothing in me wants to spend thousands of dollars and a few years doing that !

From my experience Feldenkrais can help with chronic tension or pain that can’t be pinned down (non-specific pain). For an alternative method to address malocclusion I have recently stumbled upon a KZread channel called Orthotropics. Maybe there’s something to try?
