New Shoe - Karoo 4 | Aprilia Tuareg 660

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I love my Aprilia Tuareg 660 and like to take it on the trails, which is the main reason I got the bike. I had a set of MotoZ Tractionator Adventure tires fitted to the bike from new, which lasted almost 5000 miles, I then switched to the MotoZ RallZ tyres which were also great in the sloppy mud (but not as good as the Adventures), neither tyre were great on tarmac, but it was a compromise I was prepared to accept for such a capable and good mileage tire. Had that been that, I would have stuck with them, but I just couldn't trust the front not to deflate on me as it refused to seal on the rim and constantly lost pressure. I have heard this happening to others on various bikes, so felt justified in my frustration and have now switched to a ‪@metzelermoto‬ Karoo 4 on the front, I'll put a matching rear on once the current tyre wears a bit lower. So far it seems to be happily holding pressure, so I can trust it on a multi-day ride, and on the tarmac it has transformed the Tuareg, so much more confidence in the wet and dry. It is still noisy, but I can cope with that from a knobbly tire. I still need to test it out on the trails, but from what I have heard from others, I'll not be disappointed even if it is not quite as full on as the MotoZ tires.
Please let me know if you have tried the Karoos in the mud and how you got on with them, mileage etc. And please let me know in the comments if you have had a similar issue to me with the MotoZ tyres?

Not going fast - whips it round a car at 55 in the rain on a new tyre :P I've had Anakee 3s on the Vstrom for 10k miles now and really like them. I really don't miss the weather at home, it seems to have gotten worse too! Pretty rude to encroach on your holiday to be fair, I love the sound of that bike. Superdogs!!! And you didn't show us :'( You could wheely easy if you really wanted to, at least once :P Yes, spring is much better. I hated winter at home all the time. It's the wurstest. You know I just realised I haven't bought a bike this year. Expensive is grand once you'll use it, kit is muy importante.

Hahaha... I might have allegedly been going twice that speed a bit ago on my 8S up that hill ;-) haha Am hoping that they are not too much of a compromise on the trails, the MotoZ tyres were quite fantastic in the sloppy mud, but I had to get shot as I just didn't trust it to stay inflated and then on the rim. The weather is def rubbish, and seems to have been for so bloomin long now, very frustrating... and I think it is the same the world over, I've heard it is like this in Australia, and the USA, really odd times... I hope summer makes up for it! There were many Superdogs, but I had to keep their identities secret to stop their enemies from being able to get them! :-D I've tried on the Tuareg several times where it was safe to do so and I just can't get it up... must be an age thing! :-D hahaha There is plenty of time for you to fix that error! :-D I really like them for an early spring/late autumn glove, they are warm enough, but 100% waterproof. The heated versions are actually warmer even switched off due to the extra layers of stuff on the uppers blocking wind chill, I think that is why they work so well on low heat as it doesn't get wasted heating the outside of the glove and gets reflected back to my hands/fingers instead. I do feel a bit of a geardo with all the kit I have accumulated over the years, I used to just have one set of gloves for all year and my jacket was just a denim jacket with no armour or waterproofing, simpler times... but I do prefer being warm and dry on the bike to those days! :-D

The heavens opened even more on my way home too, looked like a drowned rat by the time the bike was tucked up in my garage! 😀 Haha... although I have retired the heated gloves for now, I am so glad I got them... they will be very much appreciated once winter kicks in again November/December on. 😆 well at least you tried to do a wheelie. I actually did my first stand up wheelie on the T7 a couple days ago. Yeah i’ve done a few off road that were bump assisted but those don’t count. My buddy had the Karoo 4 on the rear of his AT before he got rid of it. He had around 3,500 miles on it and still had decent tread left. He is a big boy and the AT is a heavy bike. I’m sure your front will last long enough to finish off your current rear and the next. Oh, he rode a couple times in some bad rain and 1 time 2 up in a storm. He said he never felt the rear doing anything to get nervous about.

Hahaha... tried and failed... the little Suzuki 8S pops up no probs... I can't keep it up, but it lifts. I think the suspension travel being longer and softer on the Tuareg stops me, I need to be more aggressive on the throttle, or get some technique and skill, and try to load the suspension first. Ahh that is good to hear, the MotoZ front wore a lot faster than the rear, but that might have been due to it losing pressure. Hopefully the K4 will last and I'll be happy with it on the trails. So far those that have commented on them on the trails have confirmed what your friend thought of them, which is good news 🙂

I watched this with great interest Pete because I am absolutely clueless about which tyres I should get for Norman when he finally wears down his OEM boots. Like you, I want an off-road tyre but I also want it to feel like a "normal" tyre on the road, as much as possible. Particularly in the wet, these knobblies can feel very unpredictable, and as you say, on the front end that is a cause for concern. So when my OEM boots need changing, I might look into these tyres myself, if they are available in the right size. It sounds like you've finally found the tyres that work for you and the Toe-rag, so well done mate. Take care Pete, Garry & Ruby

As a side note, remember my experiences may differ from yours as the Tuareg uses tubeless tyres and I think your Himmy has tubes, so the tubed version of the tyres may feel different. From the trails you have shown us so far, I'd have thought at most a 50:50 tyre would do the job, and more than likely a 70:30 tyre... and a 70:30 will almost feel like a road tyre on tarmac and offer good manners and predictability for you.

@@HippoDrones Yes of course. Also I can generally avoid riding in the wet,, which helps 🙂 Although we don't have much mud, we do have a lot of sand and deep gravel to deal with here, so I wouldn't want to go too road biased with the tyre choice, not least of course because I don't have Norman for the roads anyway, I have Buddy for that. The OEM CEAT tyres have been ok so far but they are pretty road biased and if I start riding ramblas with deep sand I will very quickly appreciate some beefier knobbles on the tyres ! I know that SB had some very knobbly tyres on his Himmy which made it sound like a Raleigh Grifter as it went down the road. Something like that would be cool. Always wanted a Raleigh Grifter because my mate had one 😂 I think SB didn't rate them because they wore down very quickly on the road, which is understandable I suppose. The trouble with tyres is, you only know if they are any good once you have them on the bike. A bit like helmets really. You can try them on in the shop but you've no idea how loud or comfortable they'll be when you're actually out on the road. So any consumer advice like this video is always helpful. Perhaps it can save a few people from buying the wrong tyres ! 👍🏻 Good to hear that you're happy with them ! Cheers Pete Garry

If a single sticky string doesn't seal it, you can use multiple, but if that doesn't hold, then it is a case of getting to the end of the trail and calling the AA. On my Beta enduro bike I have fitted a tubeless system called TUbliss, which removes the main innertube but adds a skinny bladder that holds the tyre to the rim all the way around allowing you to basically run the tyre with 0psi in it if you want for ultimate traction, it also means if you get a puncture, you can carry on riding with no risk of the tyre coming off the rim, and you can also plug punctures too, so no more wheel removal to fix a knackered innertube.
