99% of tanks destroyed by anti-tank missiles, mines, artillery, drones, rockets from helicopters, bombs from planes and problems with logistics. not a tank vs tank battle So it's useless to compare battle t90m vs leopard 2 a6

Love David Willey & could listen to him talk about tanks all day :). That said, while the design flaws & other problems with Soviet/Russian armor are well known, there are two pieces of information that appear to be missing from the analysis in regards to some of The Western equipment that has been shipped to Ukraine: 1). It's odd that this wasn't mentioned, but unlike The Leclerc, Leopard 2, T-72B3, T-80, & T-90, The Abrams, Challenger 2, & Bradley fighting vehicle all lack laser warning receivers, hence as to why Russian helicopters & atgms, etc., have been having a field day against said ifvs in that the crew has no idea/warning that they are being targeted by laser-guided missiles. It's a huge weakness. 2). Despite the fact that The Abrams, Challenger 2, & Leopard 2 have markedly better thermal sights than any Russian tank that is not The T-90M, a quadcopter doesn't care about any of that, which is the main reason for there having been very few traditional armored battles during this conflict in that the combination of drones & artillery effectively outrange the capabilities of the main guns on even the best tanks. Oh, & the autoloader isn't the reason that Soviet/Russian tanks "cookoff", as the latter is the result of storing unprotected ammunition in the turret, so yeah.

I disagree. The central piece of the tank is the crew. These Ukrainian crews haven't had time to gel as a team. I could take a T72 crew that has been together for 2 years and put them against a Leopard 2 who's been together for 5 months and the T72 Crew would win.

In real life there is no such scenario that you describe here, particularly in Russia! This type of scenario only exists on the paper but hardly ever in Russia, nor in Ukraine! The reality there is much different than you ever imagine! Russians are oppressors here, low motivation, low morale, away from home in hostile territory from both sides of a fence... Regardless of training (which by the way is rather poor or one sided, incapable to improvise, incapable of collaborative effort, under strict vertical management, corrupt to the core, rigid...) they are not motivated by any means! Ukrainians from other hands fight not only for their country or their freedom but for the very existence of them and most importantly, their families - their mothers, sisters, wives! By your STATS, they should have lost already in a first week of war, yet no end is on sight! Same manner, back in 1939, in Russo-Finnish War or in Winter war as it is better known, Finland was ought to be taken in a week, read the history my friend, by the STATS you would have been right, Finnish however, before your time proved you to be wrong as do Ukrainians today! HOW do I know!? I served 3.5 years in Soviet (Special) Expeditionary Forces, retired Sgt. Maj. and I've seen Russian military intimately from inside - I was living it mate! STATS is not everything! Yet I agree with you and Stalin - human force is decisive!

Gotta support our museums! An invaluable resource that the internet could never offer a substitute for!

During covid they very quickly started to focus on KZread and such, and they now have over 500,000 subscribers and tons of patreons. It was probably a big part of the fact that they didn't completely sink, and now can continue "as usual" + the KZread/social media. Not that it made them extremely rich (I assume 😉), but hopefully they now have the ability to spread costs over more than "just entrance tickets".

Some of the old tanks are being used as stand off self-propelled guns, and just in the last few days as VBIED-type kamikaze vehicles packed with explosives and sent towards Ukrainian lines.

We call em cope cages but the russians created them to stop top attack drones, as per experience from the Azer-Arm war. Theres a couple videos out there of kamakazi drones getting stuck in the cage “Cope cages began appearing on Russian armored vehicles in late 2021 amid the pre-war buildup as a counter to loitering munitions and drones, particularly the Turkish-made TB-2 used in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and later by Ukraine against Russian forces.” -Yahoo .

Tank Museum videos are great!

Kate brings us one of the most informative and detailed reports of the battle tank which curator and historian David Willey deftly points out is a British invention and is still valid in armed conflicts. David lays out the fact that the battle tank, though exposed to numerous explosive arms and elements that can stop the metal monster in less than a heartbeat is still useful militarily as well as a symbol of power on the battlefield. In another videocast, a Ukrainian tank commander said that foot soldiers feel better and are more confident with tanks cruising across the badlands with the troops and blowing up trenches and artillery positions and attacking enemy soldiers. David's excellent and compelling historical and present-day analysis tells us that all aspects of fighting are present in modern-day warfare, from trenches to machine-gun nests, to artillery and air power and to top it off drones have been added to the list as the latest deadly new weapon being used in Ukraine. So; the tank is here to stay and as Mr Willey points out, they are going to get destroyed in battle because the enemy sees knocking out a western tank as a way of diminishing its power. All around excellent interview by Kate and incredible history lesson and modern-day battle update from David Willey.

I agree with you on your assessment. I do disagree with you repeating that Britain invented the tank. I never hear in an F-35 story on how the Americans invented the first powered airplane. Yes they did, yes we did, but irrelevant.

@@JM800 It is important to keep in mind that the WW1 wartime development of the "tank" (its cover story when being constructed said it was an experimental battlefield water delivery vehicle) required very powerful sponsors at the highest government levels for this initiative to succeed. One of them was Winston Churchill. As head of the Royal Navy, he could "make things happen" when it came to steel allocation, etc. For example, the artillery pieces for the tanks were from Royal Navy stocks. "Inventing the tank" was the easy part, getting a government crash program started to quickly put it into mass production was the miracle. Of course the massive appalling casualty figures from the Western Front were also a factor in that the tank was a helpful propaganda smokescreen to deflect attention and show that something was being done about the huge combat related death toll.

Tanks will always be needed in the battlefield. As long as there is infantry on the ground, the tank is needed to support,bolster, or press attacks.

This popped into my recommendations the day after the first loss of a Challenger 2 to an adversary in combat was announced. The crew are reported to have survived, thankfully. I hope this war ends soon and Ukraine can start to rebuild.

The Leopard 1A5 DK and DK1 Ukraine are getting 80 of is not the old version from the 60's, but were purchased by Denmark in the early 90's and further upgraded in the early- mid 90's in Denmark by Falck-Schmidt Defense Systems, to actually be used in action by Denmark in the UNPROFOR/SFOR operation in Bosnia (look up Operation Bøllebank). Back then they were equipped with a new Leopard 2A4 fire control computer, a laser range finder and the Leopard 2A4 stabilized thermal sight, night vision. The commanders forward periscope and panoramic sight were extended and the gun received a thermal sleeve and a muzzle reference collimator at the end of the barrel, a new fire-suppression system, Honda generator, GPS, RAMTA mine ploughs, roof mounted "fast fittings" for close defence work and a rear mounted turret ammunition rack and air-condition. The Leopard 1A5 DK also have a 6 times faster maximum reverse speed in compare to a Russian T-72, just like the Leopard 2A4 upgrade features will come in handy I'm sure. The Leopard 1A5 DK also has a turret which was designed to accept the newer 120 mm gun barrel from the Leopard 2A4, but this option was not originally made use of, but could easily be done now. The Leopard 1A5 DK and 1A5 DK-1 were all out-phased in 2005 and in 2010 they were handed over to German company FFG in Flensburg who keep, upgrade and sell older tanks and armored personnel carriers from both the Danish and German military, and who are responsible for their battle ready maintenance-upgrade, before they are handed over to the Ukrainians.

People seem to forget, most tank fire is HE in support of infantry rather than armor piercing tank on tank fighting. The oldest T54 will still provide decent direct fire infantry support. It does not have night fighting capability or a really good sight, but it is still very dangerous when you are facing them as infantry.

Loved how David repeatedly and clearly set expectations on the reality of war, to try and get ahead of the press narrative of doom and discouragement at the sight of the first disabled/destroyed/capture Challenger 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if the as yet unpublished article is already 90% written with a placeholder for an image, location and date. Challenger 2 and other Western tanks will make a difference. They are far more survivable and far easier to replace than years of crew training. They are also more confidence inspiring to a crew exactly because of that compared to one that wants to send sections of your body into orbit from a single strike.

I love the Tank Museum at Bovington and hope to visit it one day. I'll certainly stop by the shop if I do! It's great to hear experts that aren't really tied directly to the war in some way sharing their expertise. It's also a nice change from the military bloggers.

I think I see why they upgraded the Challenger I...they put the main gun on backwards! 😏

Really liked that episode. I think tanks are still fearsome looking and interesting to hear in the present day how they still have their place.

He has really stepped up to thecould give a master class in leadership.

Quoting from Wikipedia: The Israeli 7th Brigade was left with seven tanks, and Ben-Gal told Eitan he could no longer hold on. Suddenly A3, surrounded by Syrian forces, reported that the Syrian supply trains were turning around and withdrawing.[47] Dennie Agmon, Eitan's intelligence officer, told him that the Syrian General Staff had decided to retreat.[49] The Syrian forces, having lost over 500 tanks and APCs, began to withdraw. Although the Israelis lost 60-80 tanks, they still managed to inflict more damage on the Syrians during that battle.

The era of tanks is not over. Their role has changed. In this war, tanks never participated in a defense breakthrough. Now tanks are used in positional battles as mobile artillery. The tank stays camouflaged in shelter ready to fight. The gunners determine the target. The tank comes out of cover and makes two or three shots at the target, after which it again goes into shelter. Within a minute, the enemy does not have time to prepare anti-tank weapons. From this point of view, old tanks are as effective as new ones. When even one or two tanks are sent to support the infantry, the soldiers are very happy.

it seems weird to think there was ever any Tank vs tank battle. A tank could face any part of the enemy forces and any part of your forces could face the enemy tanks.

There are a few Tank vs Tank videos from Ukraine. But they are rare.

Please also remember drone capabilities and spotting capabilities that are multiplied after last major tank wars. That means, tanks are more easily spotted and taken out with artillery. First videos of Ukraine using tanks in this counteroffensive showed just way too open field tactics, like mining tanks plowing open fields creating black path behind them that can be seen from great distance and then those tanks are just practise targets.

That's just how it is gonna be. Most of Ukraine is an open field and there is no cover apart from the occasional forest or slight incline. The battlefield is also extremely transparent; all units can be targeted at all times. If an unit gets hit by something is more a question of fires availability and ISR reliability. A black patch in the dirt is the last thing that will give away something like an MBT. This ain't no 1989.

I know where you're coming from, but in the last big armoured battles on this terriatory (German offensives in 1941 then Soviet Offensives in 1943/1944) the enemy was able to use air and ground recon to do the same thing. It's impossible to disguise large armoured thrusts in open flat steppe. Technology has just allowed the spotting and engagement distances to be increased. There's no magic way around the physical reality of lots of big vehicles in open ground being seem.

That's why modern warfare with tanks and IFV need air coverage when assaulting enemies trench systems. But Ukraine doesn't have that much of these systems available and need them to protect the cities.

An vehicle can have almost zero miles or hours, on it, but because it's old, it has parts that have deteriorated just from sitting there. They still need upkeep and maintenance to be effective.

Two main problems with you hypothesis (1) Tanks rarely battle other tanks ,And (2) western tanks are higher maintenance and if not maintain become very large paper weights ,or targets for shelling , minefields of Air power,

Tanks are not meant to just destroy tanks. Tanks are multi-role. The first British combat tanks were specifically designed for trench warfare. The strange shape and side mounted guns allowed them to cross trenches and fire into them., Tanks are not the main antitank weapons. There are many other antitank weapons. Tank destroyers are specific antitank weapons. But may be used in other roles in some, safe situations. Tank destroyers do not all have tracks. Some use wheels. Ideally, tank destroyers are cheaper than tanks. Helicopters and aircraft can be effective tank destroyers. Very few aircraft are designed specifically called designed to destroy tanks. In the first Gulf War, US F-111 bombers using laser-guided bombs were one of the most effective tank destroyers. Many attack helicopters have a main antitank role using guided missiles.

Just to make you aware.. The primary role of the Main battle tank is to defeat Enemy Armour.. so the tank IS designed and meant to destroy tanks.. It’s secondary role (however this is operation and battlefield dependant) is to provide intimate support to the infantry. The tanks your talking about being designed for trench warfare with “strange shape and side mounted guns” was an early day design as no one knew how to provide intimate support to the infantry whilst still having an effect against German tanks.. In addition.. how many Main Battle tanks or IFVs do you see post WW2 that have “strange shape and side mounted guns”? 😊

7:03 The autloader was also to keep the tank weight down. One less crew means 25% les space needed for a tank crew member. Of course they needed to place the magazine somewhere so a little less than that. This means even old town bridges can carry the tank where many NATO tanks would have to find another way.

Old town bridges that would collapse under a Leopard 2 will also collapse under a T-72. The load limits are more for civil engineering reasons ie: driving 50+ ton vehicles over bridges repeatedly will dramatically decrease their service life.

I don´t think Leopard 1 is being used in Ukraine yet? The armour is painfully thin but then so was Scorpion and Scimitar who tended to move too fast to hit. The Leopard 1 A5 is vastly superior to the original models of the 1970´s, and they were very impressive to us in our lumbering Chieftains.

At 6:05 The Leopard 1 is more comparable to the Soviet T-62 than the later T-64s and T-72s. However, the T-62 had a 115 mm smoothbore (U-5TS) gun as its main armament, which was more powerful than the Leopard's L7.

About 30 of those Leopard 4s have been destroyed by shellfire + the Kornet. The Challenger is being held back after the misery of the leopards being wacked

Still if you had the choice id bet you would rather be in a far superior leopard tank than Russian deathtraps. If not feel free to enlist and prove me wrong :)

Great interview (from both sides). The Curator's message makes a lot of sense. Ukraine may lose a lot of tanks in its counteroffensive, but that doesn't matter if they retake their territory. This is no different to other examples of war, like D-Day, etc.

The Russians aren't t taking ground, their mission is to demilitarise AFU. Each time the RuF withdraw the AFU rush into the traps set for them as seen in Bakhmut, with 50k AFU killed. In Zaporozhe the same tactic has worked with 25k casualties so far.

However numbers aside we know what states above is correct and the UAF suffered huge losses in both and of course throughout the course of the conflict and the lack of well trained men is apparent now as they are mainly using conscripts in this offensive and it certainly shows as they can't even break through Russian fighters to even advance to their first line of defence.

"take back their territory" ? First of all that territory has been incorporated into the Russian Federation as per the UN charter through a referendum who overwhelmingly voted for it! So not only is it no longer their territory. But they have 0% chance of that coming back to Ukraine through military force the question is how many more men they will send to die before people come to that realisation! The US/UK will happily supply them and Zalenskyy will keep sending them until the last Ukrainian as they have nothing to lose and Zalenskyy has been giving millions and can flea to his home mansion in Miami. But it's this silly fantasy that needs to end.

Awesome and informative, this journalist did a great job as well as the interviewee.

The leopard one being used is the most interesting part

Brilliant, just brilliant. The interviewer knows her stuff, asks the right questions, and David Willey is the great authoritative expert he always is. Plus he can listen very good and then gives always spot on answers, and, very important in his quiet, gentleman like way of speaking. Thanks for uploading this fantastic video!

Does not matter how good a tank is without air cover its just a big target this statement was proved in WW2 and subsequent wars and its still the same.

A great lesson with the Leppard, military surplus still packs a punch

With all them trenches. We need to make a challanger version of the Churchill crocodile for them. Brutal but VERRY effective. Infact statistically the most effective bit of kit on the ground in ww2. If I'm not mistaken. 100% record against the most fortified positions.

The gloves are off. However the reason why the crocodiles were so effective. Theye would spray them once to show there range accuracy. And dam right brutality. And the enemy would surrender.

Very diplomatic and neutral presentation from David Willey, very nice! As for losses, something not pointed out, is survivability of the crew.

I love the Tank Museum staff. I would like seeing a review of the fire control systems in use in Ukraine. Often, Western systems (vs late Soviet era gear) can deal with being outnumbered better due to targeting and command and control advantages but I don’t know what that looks like to a given tank commander.

NATO have a real opportunity here to shift off their old defence inventory to the Ukraine to do the fighting against a peer adversary whist putting forward future defence capabilities for their own defence forces. The US for instance have large reserves of older Bradleys and Abrahams which are cheaper to supply to the Ukrainians than incur the de -commission costs of getting rid of them otherwise.

T80bvm, T72b3 and T90m are more than adequate for Ukraine.

Newer Western tanks are better than the Russian ones in a tank vs tank fight. Which apparently do not happen very often in Ukraine. They mostly use their tanks against Russians in trenches, trucks, forests or houses.

Tanks have utility simply be existing and stopping APCs and IFVs from operating in their combat radius. The superior optics and FCS is not just for tank-on-tank fights.
