    If that 9’ 1” lock was scarily deep, we’ve just been on holiday from Falkirk to Edinburgh and the locks at the Falkirk end were 16-17’ each! Different set up: you stay on your boat and volunteers move you through the lock - by appointment only…

  • @cruisingontheborder

    @cruisingontheborder

    8 ай бұрын

    Hi Steven, wow they are deep and yes it's so much better if you stay on the boat. We have been on some in Belgium, Holland and France (when we had our Dutch Steel Cruiser) that are 60 feet deep and you have floating bollards in the side of the lock - you tie your rope to the bollard and the boat automatically goes up in the lock attached to the bollard. We were also in the lock with huge commercial ships which was very scary particuarly when they put their engines on!! Sounds like you had fun on your trip. Thanks for your comment and we hope you continue to enjoy our adventures.x

    I love watching these vids especially Where you were passing the run off or flush has I call it at meaford locks.cast me back to the 70s when I was fishing on the field side…caught my first fish there a perch and it was so hot that year I had taken a can of shandy bass with me and I forced my self to save the drink for my walk home…I had positioned it in the water to keep cool has the embankment had subsided and the water depth was only 4 inches where I sat….just has I decided to leave I collected my fishing tackle and turned around has that flush opened and my can of shandy bass disappeared into the dark depths of the cut….never forgot about that…it was on my mind has you passed❤😂

    Another thing I love about the canals was in the 1970s we left school excited that we were going down the cut for returnable pop bottles makes like Barr another has escaped my memory …we walked all past the boat yard and has far has meaford top lock looking for them…after finding 3 which for a chocolate hungry kid we made off for the rising sun pub ,the talbot and our corner shop to cash them in..we had to choose between these 3 depending on the make of pop has they were different brands..we traded the 3 bottles for sweets and of course memories to save for life of our recycling days when no one else really cared about it..sometimes I think the boat users were kind leaving bottles for local kids to make there fortune.never saved enough to buy my dream Lamborghini countach but I always got a cream egg or a finger of fudge❤

    Very kind of you, Michael, to help the hire boat and well done. Please don’t be offended but a suggestion from my husband (ex marine eng,) to your challenge - he taught me never, never to rely on bowthrusters and, of course, you might be in the middle of a difficult manoeuvre, for example, when they decide to test you by stopping suddenly. Weed and fuse failure are the favourites and it’s happened to us, too. Here endeth his lesson! 🤣 ps.Discussions have been known! Your vlogs are very entertaining and I always look forward to the next one. Keep enjoying your life aboard and showing us the coffee shops of the cruise!

    Interesting place stone with so much history .the lock where the star inn is situated has a stream goes under the canal called the scotch brook …the brook is hidden under the town for a short period but if you follow it’s path upstream there are several mills which in there day ground flint for the pottery industry in stoke on Trent I believe the ground flint was to colour the pottery ❤on a darker side the town had many pubs or inns long closed down after hanging was abolished has people came from miles around to see the a hanging at Stafford jail has it was a public spectacle..and I believe bear baiting was another thing that took place in the meadow there.when there was a hanging if it was a well publicised case the inns in stone would get packed such has William palmer in 1856 according to local history…in 1801 there was 7 hangings and joules brewery would brew extra beer in the run up to the event

    The joules ale factory such memories for me to all that stretch of canal I remember well to the lock with the arch that had or still does a roller attached aid the ropes from horse drawn boats…under the Newcastle road through the arch where the sunken Norway narrow boat lay for years and under the railway bridge where I met some water gypsies in the 90s who lived on a boat with no engine and he pulled it from Tipton himself by rope..there boat was a old hull with rivets and scaffold and tarps for a roof…I bumped into them I I passed that area…they had about 4 kids and a dog on the boat ..passers by put off by fires on the towpath ofte turned the other way…I just picked up there washing line and passed under..to the next lock and turn left and pass stone station where the other stone brewery was ha bents brewery…my first ever ride in a police car was at bents…yes I was picked up by the 👮‍♂️ Date around 1979 and stone carnival was in full swing..the American police had shipped over 2 of there finest in a real Yankee cop car like the ones on streets of sanfrancisco or hill street blues….the black and white type..I was the only passenger when i was given a privalidged cruise in the car at bents brewery site…I was allowed to put on the sirens and lights..and when the cruise ended back at the stone police club..the cops said see you and make sure you never ride in another cop car again😂😂ah these vids are bringing back memories that were dormant in my mind❤️❤️❤️❤️the boat yard I worked at part time was on the opposite side to the brewery and all there hire boats were named from the book treasure island has all the boats had a copy inside I think I remember the name captain Flynn and the coracle…the Darlington boat was moored there once …the one where they sailed across the channel …to France mr and mrs Darlington and a dog…they wrote a book about the journey..I think it was called narrow dog to Carcasonne scary has on tv she said she carried a hammer incase the boat capsized and she could smash the window to escape..sadly the Phylis may narrowboat they did that epic journey in was destroyed by fire at crown street marina❤️

    Just made my day, flower. Uriah Heep was actually a character in Dickens's "David Copperfield". I know that, because in 1972, in Bardsey, Lincs, they were playing there and we'd never heard of 'em. ( we were only 15 ) A bloke piped up and told us the crack. Apparently it was seen as an anti - semetic novel, meant as a broadside to all the "usurers" in London at that time, who were, indeed, from jewish stock. It "appears " the same , today. I make no judgement, like.
