    Yes to all of it with some exceptions. At 71, single, with the skill set to build but now lacking the physical abilities of my youth, and after a few years of planning, I’ve started building a pontoon based houseboat. Twenty four foot tritoon with a 16’ cabin. The major differences; my helm is located at the front of the cabin for maximum visibility. Because I’m not going to be around forever, I’m building a boat with an eye to my heirs selling it, if they choose to. So, I’m building in amenities that I personally can live without but will make the boat attractive to potential buyers after I’m gone. So, solar, air conditioning, onboard potable water, a toilet, a tankless water heater, and the requisite wastewater tanks are part of the plan. My windows, doors and dual fuel appliances are salvaged from RVs. Because I’m in southern Ontario, my insulation needs have to meet the requirements for 4 season living in our cold-ish winters. Since discovering your channel some time ago, I’ve become an avid follower cuz your an inspiration to me. Thank you!

    You get the same questions i do. Most common question is why dont you add solar? My answer is ... Because i have a generator lol! Also, my head sucks water out of the lake so i don't have to use fresh water. I do go pump it out but its free at the marina, they have a nice set up so it just takes a few minutes. Looks like you are set up perfect for the way you use your boat. Thanks for the tour.

    I noticed your keys just chilling in the ignition. That might be a convenient place to keep them, but it could potentially create a problem if you've been drinking or have partaken in anything else: Be it recreational, medicinal, or even prescription. There might be certain exceptions in your state that apply to watercraft with living quarters, much the same as there are often particular exceptions for RVs, but without any such exceptions, a key in the ignition (even if turned off) with you the only one onboard is always going to be considered you are in control of a motor vehicle. That's an important thing to keep in mind if you are in an area where you are likely to be confronted by law enforcement.

    I have enjoyed your channel for a while now but not from the start. This one really tied it all together for me. I'm also 45. The wife and I purchased a 40 foot schoolbus and had a roof raise done. We were going to live on it full time but our kids started growing up to fast and it was so "cool" of an idea anymore. We decided to keep the house but both my wife and I have managed to be responsible enough with our debts to both work two 12 hours shifts a week at this time. We value time over money and things we don't need. We value memories being made. We are nurses but would rather be full time musicians. We'll that ain't happening now either. Lol. So we bought our beloved C Dory. Now we do overnight boat adventures with the kids and it's the best of both worlds. We love roughing it and tiny spaces and being on the water. My wife really loves the boat I picked for us. It's perfect. The ole C-Shanty! I'm rambling now. Brenton from Backwaters introduced me to your channel. I'm truly inspired by the both of you. You are living a peaceful admirable life brother. Thanks for posting all of these and sharing your wisdom. Greetings from Eastern NC and be good or be good at it Martin. You said this was going to be a good one and you didn't lie This was so full of interesting information. If you are thinking about getting chickens for your houseboat I have seen people in videos purchase Japanese quail and they raised them in very small spaces however the eggs are small but don't make a lot of noise and from what I've read aren't as messy as the chickens. You should look into getting a cast net to get more fish. I'm sure you're gonna work it all out and have a lot of fun thanks for sharing much appreciated

    You and me sorta think alike. I still work, but not a lot, service work only, plumbing, I started building a cabin about 20 years ago on some land I bought. I have gardens, grape vines and fruit trees. I have laying hens, but I wouldn't advise that, you can buy eggs cheaper, plus they would drive you crazy on a boat, and you wouldn't be able to keep them alive, hawks, eagles, dogs,foxes bobcats gators,you name it. Food is my biggest expense also.

    So what exactly do you do with the bags of poo at the marina? Dump it in a toilet? Throw it in a dumpster? That part wasn’t clear, though your reasoning was. And do you use river water for showering? If you rinse dishes with river water, don’t you worry about how clean it is?

  • @ATAP...AnotherTime

    @ATAP...AnotherTime

    20 күн бұрын

    Thanks for asking... The bags are put in the dumpster with the garbage. They have powder that makes it safe, identical to diapers. I do shower with river water and rinse dishes with it to, only in creeks. Not near the main river or any marina. The intake is a foot under water, so it's pretty clean water. I drink water from the Marina, filtered by my Berky filter. Pets too. Although River drinks from the river all the time. 👍

I do have some questions though, do you worry about someone breaking into your rig or rv? Do you have someone keeps an eye on it. I owned a farm in the mtns of E KY and had a great neighbor who would check on my livestock and chickens when I had to travel just because property crime (drug related) was pretty high in my area. Lastly, I admire your vision and ability to put it in place. You have made me think about the possibilities even though I'm much older. Life is about living and nit being a slave

    Driving down South and staying on the bayous in the Winter is going to be a bad idea. I live in S. Louisiana, literally on the bayou. My fellow Louisianans might get mad at me, but deep down, they know all of this is true. If you are staying off grid, you'd better have a gun, especially if you aren't from here, and it shows. You are going to be alone and vulnerable, so be prepared to get robbed or come back to everything gone if you leave that boat in the middle of nowhere and go off on an adventure in the dingy. The water quality is awful. Even if it is "fresh" water, it's nasty. Everyone is using a septic tank that empties into a creek or ditch that eventually reaches you. Then there's the agricultural and industrial run-off. You can't really walk in the shallows either because it's all marsh. A lot of it is going to be highly polluted from the chemical plants and refineries. There are waterways and estuaries where it is recommended you eat absolutely nothing from them because of this. If you can stand 80 decibels of insects and frogs all night, then okay. It absolutely stinks, and often like methane, and this can get to the point it makes you light-headed. The mosquito swarms are straight out of Hell. Also, in the Winter, there might not be hurricanes, but that's when it rains and storms the most. Also, I can guarantee living on or beside the water, if your pets are not alert and do not have a natural fear of the water, and if you are not meticulously careful to keep them away from the water, they will eventually get eaten. In a lot of places, alligators are scared shitless of people. These are the places where loud boats speed through or that allow seasonal, licensed hunting. They will get as far away from you as fast as they can. However, everywhere else, this is not the case, especially in parkland where they are protected. They will not hesitate to snatch a small animal, but I've never known a person who has been attacked by one. The worst they will do is swim up and brush against you, which is them being polite enough to tell you to leave. People often say it's because people have been feeding them, and it's their way of asking for food. Ain't nobody regularly feeding gators in the wild. That's so stupid. People desperately want to believe it's safe to swim in this nasty water.

    Hard question.. I truly feel this is an individual based question. Some folks go to the doctor very regularly, some every 5 years. In my case,,. I used to pay 425 a month for insurance while working at a farm. After 6 years I had gone 2 times for a physical and no other times. So, now I have catastrophe insurance that only covers after I pay 5 thousand out of pocket in a rolling year. However , I have the money to pay that 5 thousand. It is extremely cheep. 200 a year.. I have gone to the hospital 2x emergency and the cost after payment arrangements was less then $400. Each time. So I have saved 425x 60 months only to be out of pocket 800. I do get annual blood work due to family history that is $125... however, no 2 people are the same and if I got sick more often my plan would be different. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it 👍
