It doesn’t sit right with me that she blames past trauma for her comments. Many other gymnasts experienced abuse but are still kind and respectful to others. It just seems like she was trying to bring others down in order to make herself feel better.

I don't think everybody copes with trauma the same way, maybe she didn't identify the abuse before and just thought it was the correct way to be successful. She knows she made a mistake like all of us do, so as long as she learns we should stop the bullying

@@Natalia-il8ck I know that people cope with trauma differently, but it’s not an excuse to bring others down. And I’m not bullying her, just stating that what she said was not right. Hopefully she learns but this isn’t the first time she has acted this way.

@@Natalia-il8ck My concern here is that she is NOT learning. She’s made hateful, racist, entitled comments repeatedly for years. It doesn’t appear she feels she’s ever made any mistake, at any time, and no one around her is looking out for her. (Which is, BTW, another common reality in abuse situations.)

Nothing misinterpreted ...she communicates clearly, gets caught, apologizes. The message is quite frequently critical of others. This wash, rinse, repeat has been a formula since her teen years. This is a mark of a person lacking in wisdom and self-awareness. But instead of shaming MyKayla for being herself, we might be doing the world a great service by simply not paying attention to what she has to say anymore, and giving our attention to the athletes who earned their way to Paris, and matters of far greater relevance and importance.

If Simone hadn’t gotten the twisties, Skinner wouldn’t have that silver medal. She was always a replacement and only in 2014 did she ever compete with the team. She’s still bitter. But she needs to get over it. And the fact she tried to put her negative comments off on dealing with the abuse of the Márta era is just bull. She needs to just go sit down and shut up.

@@darkmatter5940 exactly. And she acts like she was always going to get it. Looking back, she’s always made problematic comments. She liked a post calling Gabby Douglass a monkey when Gabby made the 2016 Rio team. Skinner never understood the numbers. Gabby and Maddie were needed on bars. Every other field was covered twice over. Skinner fit nowhere. Same for Tokyo, Grace and Jordan and better execution than she did. She should have remembered the floor final at 2014 worlds when her difficulty was higher than Aliya Mustafina’s but Mustafina snacked that bronze medal from her with execution. Humbleness is a virtue that Skinner doesn’t have.

I mean you no disrespect nor do I agree with the comments she made. I just don’t understand your comment. What does having a baby have to do with anything? Shawn Johnson, who I think is amazing, has a family and still speaks on gymnastics . Aliya Mustafina had a baby then went back to competition and made the national team. She still looks back and speaks on her sport. Over half the sports commentators are past athletes who now have families. I want to make it clear I don’t agree with what she said but having a “whole baby” doesn’t take your right to an opinion, or right to look back away. I don’t have to agree with her but having a baby is irrelevant to looking back or speaking on things.

I don’t think the media nor public has been kind to MyKayla since this whole mess started, but really she should just stay quiet. It seems like every time she talks she digs a deeper hole. I’m not defending her initial video…that very poorly thought out and inappropriate in many ways…but now it seems like she’s trying to backtrack and it’s creating a bigger mess. There was no reason to drag Marta Karolyi in all of this too…it looks like her scapegoating Marta to get the heat off of her. Sometimes it’s best to just weather the storm. I do wish her the best though…the backlash must be traumatizing.
