My Current Materials For Binding The Bellies Of Whips - Why I Switched Them So Much Over The Years

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey everyone, in today's video we'll talk about the different materials I've used to bind the bellies of whips over the years, and the materials that I am currently using today. We'll also have some fun with a 12ft Peter Jack Bullwhip, and talk about why I switched materials so much over the years. I hope you enjoy.
*Please note - I listed the incorrect link for the proper lacing tape, but it has been corrected*

Please please please give us a new link or at least tell us EXACTLY what it is! I haven't figured it out and I really don't think I'm using what you're using. Mine is all waxed and it squishes (the roll) when I apply pressure so I'm pretty sure what I've got isn't right.

@@joelgreenwood887 I'm not sure if this will help at all but try looking for Electrical lacing cord/tape. it was used for binding bundles of wires together to form a "loom" before the invention of cable ties. It comes in different widths, normally in black or white and waxed or unwaxed. It's not cheep these days, because cable ties have taken over, but it's still available. I hope this helps and good luck.

New video. Awesome. Hey Nick I see you're all bundled up which tells me it's getting cold up there. Time for you to head south. 😆 I find that that using a combo of binding material works very well. First belly uses artificial sinew. For the second bellie I use lacing cord or spot tie. It isn't cheap but it doesn't stretch nor shrink. Hope that helps. Have a Merry Christmas and busy new year

That Dacron stuff is very hard to get here unfortunatley. I´ve also figured that the floor mat tape is kinda thicc and its super hard to bind, so you won´t see or feel where it ends. I´m still sticking to hockey tape (another option would be leukotape - the stuff doctors use to finish a wound dressing). This stuff sticks even better and is even less stretchy and generally more ridgid. Currently I´m experimenting with glass fibre tape - Calibre Whips recommended it especially for unwaxed whips. This stuff takes stiffness to the next level. But wax won´t penetrate so you gotta think carefully where you´re useing it. I put some in the core and MAYBE some on the first belly. Especially on very long whips it can work wonders. Unfortunatley no long-time experience yet. Thanks for the video Nick. Good to see you in front of the camera again. Keep it comming man, take care!

Thanks for the advice. I am on my third and fourth whips from your videos. Used the current method for the second whip and it came out fairly good. I have a friend who raises cattle and he adopted it on sight. No heel knot or transition knot on it but he picked it up cracked it a few times and put it in his truck. My current whips are coming along slowly. Now if I could just learn to crack a whip.

I think that using electrical tape the first couple of times… it’s pretty sound advice. You've got more problems with dropping strands & the tangled mess at your feet than you do worrying about the materials becoming too relaxed several months from now? Plus… you learn why NOT to use electrical tape as a means for long lasting rigidity in your transitions. Love your tutorials. Learned everything I know from your channel. Sold a few whips, too! Thank you… for your ability to keep me interested in whip making.

I've been making whips based on your methods for the past few years, though I've use only the hockey tap and waxed nylon thread on all of them except my first one. The only real problem if found with it is with the whips longer then 6', they are the only ones I've noticed the transition getting a little loose. Though the last 8' I did I bound the belly's and plated them much tighter then usual to try and avoid the loosening problem. Seems to be working so far, wanna say thanks for the info and vids can't wait to see more from you.

It is great that you shared your feedback on the materials used in your whip making. The links are helpful too. I have updated my materials list on the various whip building guides you have provided in past videos. Have you considered putting together a kit to make an assortment of whips? Doing a kit for a single whip may not be cost effective as the lacing tape and hockey tape are not packaged for single whips. I haven't checked your video library yet, but a like video on the tools you use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for sharing, Nick. Unfortunately, artificial sinew and dacron lacing tape is not available in Indonesia. I use waxed nylon thread that commonly used for leather. It works well so far. It can hold the stiffness of the transition well.

Hey Nick, I just finished my 3rd whip using your tutorials. I did the first two using your methods, but I branched out on the last one. I decided that I could achieve a denser core by using lead split weights for fishing instead of bbs. I even came out with a staggering method where the handle and transion has only lead, but the further down the taper I get, the more lead weights I replace with bbs until I get to the last 4 inches which are all bbs

Hey Nick, I've made three whips based on your 2020 current method now. I found another downside to the nylon thread is it's not only time consuming but the stuff will not stay on the spool as you mentioned in that video. When I used it it got so bad I wound up spending hours just trying to get enough line untangled to finish a binding. The last one I made I actually switched back to sinew so I wouldn't have to go through it again. I see you're using dacron now which is commonly a bow string material for older recurve bows. Have you ever looked into D97 or fastflight string material? Where dacron does stretch considerably under tension the newer materials have nearly 0 stretch. Could be overkill for a whip, but just a thought.

4:05 Now you tell us😂 It's just as well I skipped straight to lacing tape and hockey tape lol. Although, I'm not sure if it's a good thing that I've deprived myself of an experience using sinew etc etc, but I could still use them and experiment for comparison. And of course, as soon as I opened it I had to see if my hockey tape smelled like fish, it didn't, I was most disappointed lol. Your attention to detail is astounding, and most helpful. Great advice as always!👍🏼 Also, really loving the easy listening Boss Ross style music in the background😊

Thanks Martin! Others have asked for that as well, and I will make it so. I miss Germany, and would love to return some time soon. I visited some friends in Herdecke in 2018, and it was my first time ever traveling to Europe. One of the days I was there, my friends took me to a small metal smithing village museum. There was a group of about 15 of us there for the tour, and I was the only one who did not speak German. The tour guide went on to give the demonstrations in German, but then afterwords he would always do the same demonstrations in English just for me, even though I was the only one who needed it. I'll never forget that. It really meant a lot. Needless to say, I felt very welcomed from everyone in your country and everyone was so kind to me. Thanks for watching!

Like others have said you could try different types of bow string making materials like some kind of fast flight string. The issue is, many are sold pre-waxed for bow string making but you might be able to find some without it. But D97 and other new fast flight bow string materials will have even more rigidity than Dacron. Though the Dacron you're using is woven which I have never seen before.

I use bowstring cord- diameter 1600D. A lot stronger than artificial sinew, stays in place, and it is slightly elastic as well. I also use it for crackers, they last much longer than crackers made of thread for sewing leather or crackers from the inner strands of paracord. Electrical tape is heat sensitive, meaning, if the friction warms it up, it will expand slightly, and the adhesive will get looser, and then it moves a bit, and as it cools back down, it now has a new resting place- after each use, it will move. This is why your electrical tape doesn't stay tight. It is designed for keeping hot wire from making it brittle right away, but this has a downside for other uses.

Nick, I'm wondering if you have you ever used the guts of paracord to bind? For my last few projects I have been untwisting a single thread of para-guts into its three filaments and using a single filament as binding material. Its not ideal to work with as it can get twisted and fray a little, however i have not noticed any slackening off of my transitions. Also, its free so thats a bonus. have you tried this, and what do you think?

If I'm not mistaken, artificial sinew can be made from polyester or nylon fibers. Lacing tape can be poly or nylon as well, but is generally braided and flattened, therefore a wider "tape". It may be waxed or unwaxed. Poly stretches less than nylon. Dacron is a registered trade name for a braided polyester fiber. All of the variations can be confusing so it's important to look carefully at the descriptions of what you are buying.

I i like this vid Im curious to see what youre binding with i quickly moved away from tape for binding I bind my core strands, I too prefer the stiffer transitions. I currently use some extremely strong embroidering thread. It works pretty well, and the only place i use tape is on my handles. I use 1/4" steel rod, and quickly realized that the plaiting likes to slide on the smooth surface of the steel, so I use hockey tape on the steel surface just over the connecting portion of the transition from the steel to the sinker cord. I use 1/4" sinker cord loaded with #6 lead shot, and three to four regular paracord strands that end at different lengths to create the taper, I use something similar to the video you did with Mr.Winrich on the no bull bullwhipand i use a similar thread and keep my cords straightish while binding them, I like using the thread i love your videos demonstrating your progression. I know exactly where you were going with the cooking analogy...i cook for my wife kids daily, and if something is off i can immedately tell. I hit my transitions with a few passes on the handle transitions. The thread i ise is much thinner than that artifical sinew, i use some nylon thread that is poly bonded to make my crackers. It works well and lasts a long time. I will try thay dacron (probably misspelled that) tape for binding. The thread i use is for canvas, and outdooor leather work its super strong. I hold the spool with my feet and roll my whip in my hands to bind and its been working well. I must admit when i started my whips had a lot of shot in the cores, the whips i make now are so much lighter 🤣 lmao. Love your chanbnel nick, you've taught me a lot...still working on the handle base, with turks head process of yours because i really like it.
